Happy September! BACK IN THE DAY, THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL WAS AFTER LABOR DAY. We could swim all day, play capture the flag after dark, and wait to go school shopping for sweaters until the temperature finally drops below 90. Now, our kids turn the corner into August and boom, back to school. I remember going school shopping with my mom and sister, lining up new wool skirts, corduroy pants and turtlenecks on my bed, searching for the combination that wouldn’t cause me to break out in a sweat on the bus (where opening the windows was our best hope to cut through the heat). We put away the white pants and open-toed shoes and checked that last year’s boots still fit (they never did). I would clean out my closet and pass hand-me-downs

to my little sister. I was the first girl after four boys so didn’t get hand-me-downs. Plus, I think my mother probably enjoyed buying girls clothes after years of pants, shirts and loafers. Though, I was never a girly girl so probably shopped for my share of pants, shirts and loafers (and still do!). This fall, I’m looking forward to getting back into my cashmere sweaters (though I wear them on cool summer nights in northern Michigan where I spend July) and Cole Haan loafers (ditto). In Atlanta, we ease into fall fashion. We duck into the boutiques and department shops to get cool as much as to check out what’s new this season. Luckily, we have plenty of time and oodles of options for shopping. Good luck with

ALLIANCE (GOCA) BEGAN ITS ANNUAL FUNDRAISING WALK IN 2002 AND OVER THE YEARS IT HAS BEEN HELD AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS METRO ATLANTA. In its inaugural year, the GOCA Walk was held at Centennial Park and has had many celebrated walk routes since then. Regardless of its location, the GOCA Walk, rebranded as the “Teal Trot” in 2014, has always been a hallmark fundraising, advocacy, and community empowerment event for GOCA and the ovarian cancer community. This year’s Teal Trot is being held at Chastain Park on September 18. Teal is the color associated with the ovarian cancer community, and Chastain Park will be a sea of teal on September 18. There will be teal t-shirts sporting team names and walkers adorned with feather boas, sashes, banners, balloons, streamers and tiaras. “As a former competitive sprinter and coming from a family of world class runners, my mom Sharon was an Olympic athlete, so the Teal Trot is a no brainer,” says Neil Danville. “It provides us with an opportunity to support an amazing cause, with amazing participants, and to push ourselves through sport while simultaneously raising money and supporting GOCA. It is imperative to come together as a community – there’s much strength to be had in numbers.” Team Danville’s “love me back to life attitude” is reflected in their deep faith and their combined ability to make their faith and family the most important aspect of their lives. OPENING A BRICK-AND-MORTAR STORE RIGHT WHEN COVID-19 HIT WAS NOT WHAT CRISTI HOLCOMBE, OWNER AND DESIGNER OF CH HOME, HAD IN MIND…BUT IT WORKED. The Johns Creek resident, former HGTV personality, wife, and mother of two decided to push forward with her dream store and the response has been amazing. CH HOME opened in Johns Creek in the summer of 2020 featuring home décor, furniture, accessories, gifts, vintage rugs, pillows, and candles, all hand-selected and carefully curated by Holcombe. The furnishings and the vibe of the shop are designed to be fresh, casual, and comfortable, just like Holcombe’s personal design style. “My goal for the shop is to carry pieces that are really livable and attainable that can work in anyone’s home,” said owner and designer, Holcombe. “We try and keep a constant rotation of items that are unique, approachable, and fun.”

Cristi’s successful career in interior design didn’t just happen overnight. Prior to founding her full-service interior design firm in 2009, Cristi planned and executed design concepts for several award-winning communities at one of the country’s largest home builders, Beazer Homes. She also spent a couple of years managing multi-million dollar design projects for a large hotel company and its 40 plus hotels across the nation. Her big break came in 2012 when she won a role on HGTV’s Emmy Award winning show, Elbow Room, as production designer. During her three seasons on Elbow Room, she helped design and execute 39 renovations that were featured on national television. “I could have never dreamed that I would have the opportunity that I had on Elbow Room,” says Holcombe. “Even though reality TV is much different than the real world, I was able to learn so much about the construction process and working quickly on a tight budget, which still helps my clients today.” In the years since the show, her interior design firm, Cristi Holcombe Interiors, has grown into one of the top full-service design firms in the North Atlanta community, offering turn-key design services for residential homes and light commercial projects. After moving to Johns Creek in 2014 with her husband Billy and two children, Cristi dreamed of one day opening a home decor store in the area to serve her interior design clients and the community. Her dream became a reality seven years later when the couple found the perfect space beside Fresh Market, at the corner of Old Alabama Rd and Haynes Bridge Rd, and decided to open CH HOME together as a family business.

Holcombe said, “CH HOME has been great for my clients because we can bring them in to actually see, touch, and feel many of the pieces that we’re selecting.” The two businesses naturally complement each other. CH HOME recently celebrated its one-year anniversary with a fun customer appreciation event featuring live music, raffle prizes, complimentary food & beverages, and more. A portion of the proceeds benefitted the Georgia Chapter of the MS Society. “We have been blown away by the feedback and support from the community,” says Billy Holcombe. “It’s a lot of fun getting to know our customers that live in the area and hope to be the go-to place for home furnishings and gifts for many years to come.” So, what’s next for CH HOME?
