JULY 2021 PUBLISHER
Hello friends, THIS MONTH, WE CELEBRATE FREEDOM, AND THIS YEAR, WE CAN REVEL IN IT MORE THAN EVER. Free from (mostly) masking and distancing and worry. We salute all those who made this recent freedom possible and remember those lost in its pursuit. This month, my family is gathering for a reunion at Lake Michigan, vaccinated and ready, more than ever for bear hugs. I don’t want to say we compete to see who gives the longest, strongest hugs, but if you’re the first to release, well, it’s your loss. My brother Bob is the reigning king of the embrace. This summer there will be early morning paddles on the glassy bay, mid-afternoon sailing when the wind picks up and singing. Lots of singing. My parents were both musicians and we grew up practicing piano, singing in the church choir, and harmonizing (likely annoying all the non-Sparlings) at every turn. Being with my three brothers and sister and their wonderful husbands and wives and families is an elixir. We share family memories and find they differ from perspective and experience. We’ll carve out time this summer to work on our late brother Dan’s

A BETTER JULY 4TH FOR DOGS AND THEIR OWNERS July 4th is a holiday dreaded by most dogs and their owners! Independence Day festivities are always fun this time of year, but try to remember that dogs usually don't feel comfortable around fireworks. Dogs have hearing that is four times more sensitive than humans, and loud noises in general can create fear and anxiety in your pooch. Whenever possible, try to keep your pet indoors and make sure you treat them with plenty of Pet Wants natural calming balm to curb anxiety. PetWants.com/ JohnsCreek 678-369-7987

WINING, DINING AND THE ARTS IN WEST TEXAS
YOU DON’T JUST “HAPPEN BY” LUBBOCK. The city has an international airport, so it’s a snap to get there, but it’s roughly a five-hour drive to any of the other large cities in the region (El Paso, Albuquerque, Dallas-Fort Worth). Tourists flock cool and eclectic offerings, but Lubbock seems to have flown under the radar for many years. With the ongoing revitalization of its historic down-
vineyards, with long, hot summer days and cool

Doc’s son, Kim, continued on in the business, making wine at other local wineries for several years before opening McPhearson Cellars in a 1930s Coca Cola bottling plant in downtown Lubbock. Kim McPhearson is a twice-nominated James Beard semifinalist. His Estate Sangiovese is divine and the Les Copains Rosé is perfect for summer porch sipping. English Newsom Cellars co-founder Steve Newsom was a 30-year cotton farmer before transitioning to winemaking. He got into the wine business initially as a grape grower. He looked at the future of what Texans wanted and his prediction: wine. More and more, Texans were developing a palate for fine wine and West Texas has just the climate to produce those grapes. English Newsom’s first harvest was in 2019. Steve got just a little emotional talking about the first time he opened one of his own wines. “There’s a sense of pride that comes with CONTINUED >

creating something with your own hands from start to finish,” Steve says. “You don’t go up to one of your friends with a pair of jeans and say – hey, I grew these on my farm. There are so many steps between the cotton crop and the finished product that your hands don’t touch… but with wine, you absolutely want to say, ‘I grew that’.” Downtown Lubbock is brimming with early 1900s architecture. Many historic structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. One of those properties is the Kress Building at 1109 Broadway. The Spanish-Revival/Mission style building opened as a department store in 1933. Local winemakers Chase and Elizabeth Hill purchased the Kress Building and opened Burklee Hill Bistro & Tasting Room in March of 2020. The space is open and light and full of original architectural features. The menu is curated specifically for wine pairings.

SK: Color World Housepainting differentiates itself from other painting companies by offering a “one-stop” experience for the homeowner looking to paint their house, either interior or exterior. We offer gutter replacement services, wood repair and drywall repair. Many times the homeowner may not notice issues with water drainage from inadequate gutters which causes wood damage or in very serious causes, basement issues. We will manage the entire job, gutters, wood repair, and finally the painting. As far as trends... for the exterior, we are seeing homeowners change the look of their 1990s red brick homes by painting or whitewashing the brick. This gives an instant updated and modern look to the home! Also for the exterior, homeowners are beginning to contrast dark gutters against the lighter, brighter grays and whites for the trim and siding.

Light and bright is also the trend for the interiors. As homeowners are selling their homes, new home buyers are looking for neutral tones throughout the house. The days of the dark maroon or navy dining room are long gone! Grays, in cool tones and warmer tones, have become the standard in

interior painting. For those that are wanting a little extra updated look, we have painted window trim or an accent wall with darker, warmer colors. We also will repaint kitchen or master bath cabinets. If the homeowner just can’t afford new cabinets (which many of us cannot), a quick and much less expensive option is painting. Homeowners are looking to change to whites and grays for the cabinets, with a darker island for accent. We are seeing blues, cocoa, and even dark green tones for the accent color for islands. AL: YOU HAVE SUCH A STRONG TEAM. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT EACH BRINGS TO THE PROCESS. SK: My husband Harvey and I are the owners and operators of the business. I had been in manufacturing, operations and supply chain for large companies for many years and bring the financial and operational expertise to the business. Harvey has been in construction for over 30 years and brings the high expectations of quality craftsmanship. AL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR HOME. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE COLORS AND WHAT WAS THE PROCESS? with a great view and a great outdoor space. The only issues was that it was a little outdated and needed some TLC on the exterior. We first tackled the windows by replacing them with vinyl windows. We wanted to change the exterior trim from white to a color that completed the red brick a bit more. So we changed the color of the windows and matched that color for the trim. We use Sherwin Williams paint, who have the color formulation for the Marvin Window color that we chose. It was a very easy process. Next, we tackled the exterior space, starting with our covered exterior patio. After some repairs on the structure and updating the flooring to a tile, we chose a beautiful blue/gray color (Sherwin Williams Krypton) for the patio ceiling. I have always wanted a blue porch ceiling! We wanted the space to feel like an extension of the interior. We spend most mornings and evenings enjoying the view! We also carried the same colors into the outdoor kitchen space to tie it all together. For the interior, the entire interior was a gold color with a flat sheen on the walls. We lightened it all up with a much lighter, warmer tone. We used Sherwin Williams Shitake for the kitchen and family room. We used a cooler tone in the in the living room, going with Sherwin Williams Modern Grey for that room. Again, much lighter and brighter and updated the look of the entire home! AL: WHY IS SUMMER A GOOD TIME TO JUMP INTO A HOME PROJECT? SK: Obviously, summer is a great time for exterior projects because of the weather. We have been extremely busy this spring and summer as more and more people are staying at home during the pandemic and are wanting to create a more comfortable living experience. Also, now that we are moving through the pandemic, homeowners and wanting to entertain and enjoy their space! Also, with the crazy housing market, many homeowners are investing in their homes and doing projects that have been put off for years to get their home ready for sale. AL: YOU’RE THE EXPERTS. YOU HAVE OUR ATTENTION. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT COLOR WORLD HOUSEPAINTING? SK: Color World Housepainting is a national franchise that has been in business for over 25 years. We have a great reputation, great support from our corporate offices and a great business model that supports us as franchise owners and our customers. ColorWorldHousepainting.com/Atlanta-North 28

Your Safer Summer EMORY HEALTHCARE DOC SHARES ADVICE FOR WEEKEND WARRIORS AND FAMILIES ON THE GO
DR. SARA RAISER IS A SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIAN AT EMORY HEALTHCARE. HER PRIMARY INTERESTS INCLUDE RUNNING MEDICINE, GAIT BIOMECHANICS, AND THE FEMALE ATHLETE. She is Co-Director of Emory’s Running Medicine Program, Associate Medical Director for the Atlanta Track Club Elite Development Team, and team physician for Emory College athletics. We asked Dr. Raiser to help us plan a safer summer. WHAT ARE THREE MUST-HAVE ITEMS FOR THE FAMILY TRAVEL FIRST AID KIT? First aid kits can be wildly comprehensive or they can include just a few essentials, depending on how light you’re traveling and the duration of your trip. Be sure that you plan ahead and prepare for the weather, travel delays, and any medical conditions that your family members may have. 1. Carry a few items to effectively care for wounds. Clean wounds with hydrogen peroxide or a sterile saline solution. Cover wounds with simple bandages or gauze and tape. Antibiotic ointment is not a bad idea either. 2. Don’t forget important medicines, such as EpiPens, for anyone in the family who may have an anaphylactic allergy (in which the tongue and throat might swell, causing difficulty breathing), as well as any other prescription medications for family members. These medicines may be needed urgently and could be hard to obtain while away from home, especially through holiday weekends when your doctor’s office is likely closed. 30

During the summer, tweezers will come in handy when it comes to removing ticks while out hiking. Use bug spray and wear long sleeves and long pants to help prevent these bites in the first place! Tweezers can also help remove that pesky splinter that you get from walking barefoot on the dock at the lake. WITH WEEKEND WARRIORS ON THE LOOSE OVER THE SUMMER, HOW CAN OTHERWISE RATHER SEDENTARY PEOPLE AVOID INJURIES WHILE PLAYING DURING THE SUMMER? Make sure you take a few minutes to warm up before jumping into a game of tag or racing your friends across the lake. Some quick calisthenics to wake up your muscles and improve flexibility may help to prevent muscle and joint injuries. Of course, staying active on a regular basis with a combination of cardiovascular and strength training, as well as time spent on flexibility, are the best ways to prevent injury. Wear proper attire - especially supportive shoes that are meant for the activity you are engaging in (i.e., don’t play soccer barefoot in the rain!). You should also get enough sleep and allow yourself to recover sufficiently after vigorous activity. The more fatigued you are, the greater the likelihood that you may pull a muscle or twist an ankle. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON VISITS YOUR OFFICE SEES DURING THE SUMMER? Many injuries over the summer consist of “weekend warrior” injuries such as knee and ankle sprains, when folks are doing activities that are not part of their normal routine. My running medicine clinic also tends to see overuse injuries, like stress fractures, as many runners put in a lot of foundational miles over the warmer summer months in preparation for the fall race season. 32
