Prior to COVID, we all thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Hanukkah with my Maryland cousins and all their little grandkids. My Dad’s closest cousin loves to throw dinner parties and decorate a special table, so going there for her fun annual Hanukkah dinner party was always a treat. Literally a treat, with a smorgasbord of dishes and desserts, always spoiling guests with very full tummies. She also always had a special present for each guest at their place setting, which usually contained a clever gadget or two. One year I recall receiving that purse hanging thingy that you carry with you to a bar or restaurant. Seeing the young cousins light the candles and say the prayers in their adorable little voices is so fun. One day, I am sure they will be hosting holiday dinner parties of their own just like their Bubbie. This was also a dinner party that my late Mom loved to attend each year, especially because she adored seeing the little ones, always lighting up her face.

Furkids Animal Rescue Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters raised over $90,000 to benefit their homeless animals in need at their annual Paws for Cocktails fundraiser. HAS DRIVEN THE CHRISTMAS MENU FOR AS LONG AS SHE CAN REMEMBER. The long holiday table was filled with antipasto, salami, and prosciutto that her grandmother would bring with her from New York. Next up was spinach ricotta ravioli that the family all made together in the morning after enjoying a gift exchange and brunch casserole. Keeping the family traditions alive is very important for Denise and, just as in years past, her ravioli are served on a huge oval platter swimming in melted butter. Denise is CEO at AMI Group based in Alpharetta, providing food and beverage solutions for the travel industry and helping relief agencies in the battle against food insecurity. She is a proud member of the Les Dames d’Escoffier International – Atlanta Chapter. The holidays speak to tradition and generations of tried and true family recipes. For the grown-ups, there was always a pitcher of Manhattans on the table and for dessert, her aunt’s pineapple cheesecake, date nut bars, zuppa anglaise made from her grandmother’s recipe and a square bakery box of Italian cookies from her grandmother’s local bakery. Denise’s Date Nut Bars BEAT UNTIL LIGHT: 3 eggs GRADUALLY ADD: 1 cup sugar, continue beating until very light ADD: 2 cups chopped dates, 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, 1 tsp vanilla SIFT TOGETHER: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/8th tsp salt. ¼ tsp cloves, 1/4 tsp cinnamon Add the sifted ingredients to the egg mixture. Beat until well blended, pour into a greased 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool and cut bars and roll in confectioners’ sugar.

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

T E D DY ’ S MOM’S SUGAR COOKIES INGREDIENTS + 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour + 1 teaspoon baking powder + 1 teaspoon kosher salt + 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature + 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar + 2 large eggs + 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract + 1 tablespoon orange or lemon zest

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, using an electric or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar on medium-high until the mixture is light, fluffy and pale, 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down sides of the bowl, and add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla, and beat until everything is well combined, stopping to scrape down the bowl as needed. Scrape dough out of bowl and divide it in half. Wrap each

piece in plastic wrap, patting into a 1-inch-thick disk. Chill at least 2 hours and up to 5 days. Heat oven to 325 degrees. Roll out dough, one disk at a time, on lightly floured parchment paper or work surface until it's about ⅛ inch thick. Create shapes, using a lightly floured cookie cutter. If at any point the dough becomes too soft to cut and cleanly remove from parchment paper, slide it onto a cookie sheet and chill for a few minutes in the freezer or refrigerator. Gather any dough scraps and combine them into a disk. Roll and repeat the cookie-cutting process, chilling as necessary. Place shapes onto parchment-lined baking sheets 1 inch apart and bake until cookie edges are lightly browned with sandy, pale centers, 12 to 15 minutes. Cool and decorate.
