gorgeous ginger tabby who catches varmints and brings them in for appreciation. Tanque (short for Tanqueray) was on our porch when we moved in. After we chased down his owner via the cat’s implanted chip, we knew he was here to stay when the owner reported, “Oh, that cat died.” Tanque is, perhaps, a ghost. But, no matter how many times I vacuum the cat hair off the furniture for the last time, get up in the middle of the night to let in a meowing brat or Google, “how to get rid of cat urine stench,” I can’t seem to live without cats. They bring joy to my husband and kids. They provide hours of Instagram footage. They complete our family. For this issue, we are all about kids and pets.

THANKS TO THE EFFORTS AND SUPPORT OF THE JOHNS CREEK VETERANS ASSOCIATION, LOCAL RESIDENTS HAVE A PLACE TO GO TO CONTEMPLATE AND HONOR THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED AND CURRENTLY SERVE IN THE UNITED STATES ARMED SERVICES. And the opportunity for remembrance is about to expand. Since 2014, Newtown Park has been home to the 4-acre Veterans Memorial Walk. Last year, “The Wall That Heals,” a 250-ft. replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, visited Johns Creek, welcoming more than 8,500 visitors during its five-day stop. Now, the Veterans Memorial Walk has been selected as the permanent home for the wall, which has been retired after having toured the country for more than a decade. Situated behind Park Place at Newtown School and the Community Garden inside the Park, the Veterans Memorial Walk welcomes guests with a grand brick entrance plaza flanked by eight soaring flagpoles. The plaza, like the coming of “The Wall That Heals,” was made possible in large part by a donation from former City Councilwoman Cori Davenport and her husband John. Visitors enter the hardscape path through a decorative metal archway and can meander through the site, which includes 10 black granite monuments, each memorializing a different conflict or special group. At the foot of the monuments, dedicated pavers feature names of those who served. Like the monuments, the sponsored bricks raised funds to construct the Veterans Memorial Walk so that no public money was used to create the space, which sits on City of Johns Creek property. 16

Beginning with World War I and ending with Afghanistan, seven monuments identify American conflicts. Special monuments recognize those who have been awarded a Purple Heart, as well as POWs and MIAs. One monument is dedicated to Women in Service, funds for which were raised through the efforts of Girl Scout Sabrina Yvellez as her Silver Award project. In addition to the monuments, where brick surrounds offer a place for repose, granite benches throughout the Walk provide more seating, and a spacious wooden gazebo gives shade during warm afternoons. In the center of the Walk sits a stone encircled fountain. With the coming of “The Wall That Heals,” visitors will have another way to honor those who served. A smaller-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the traveling wall bears the names of the more than 58,000 men

Caroline’s mother even received a phone call from her neurosurgeon, Dr. Andrew Reisner, asking if he could nominate Caroline as his miracle of the year story and she was featured in a Children’s Miracle Network video, “2018 Miracle Child.” A week after her video was filmed, Caroline went for her six-month follow-up MRI. The scan showed the tumor was back, this time as a High Grade Glioma. Caught

early, Caroline was set to have another brain surgery. Once again, Children’s surgeons were able to remove the entire tumor. At this point, there are currently no official guidelines to treating this aggressive cancer. Caroline was accepted into a clinical trial through the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She completed another 30 rounds of radiation and is currently on immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Her last scan was stable. Now, if you didn’t see Caroline’s missing patch of hair, you would never realize what a tough battle she is fighting. Life can change instantly, and it definitely did for the Brewer family. Jamie’s company suddenly announced they were laying off her entire sales force. Kendra Scott offered to have a fundraising party for the family and at that event, Tina Fowler of Polo in the Pines introduced herself to Jamie Brewer.

She told Jamie about the Polo in the Pines mission and shared that her own mother fought cancer for more than 20 years. She explained that 100% of Polo in the Pines fundraising benefits brain cancer research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Jamie was inspired and wanted to be involved with the event. Polo in the Pines is a two-day charity event on October 13 and 14 full of polo matches, food, beverages and philanthropy, and this year Caroline is the honoree. “If Caroline’s story compels even one person to donate, that's important. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WILL AND TRUST PLANNING NOW 1. THERE HAS BEEN A SIMPLIFICATION OF ESTATE PLANNING DOCUMENTS FOR MARRIED COUPLES. Bottom line: The 2012 and 2017 Tax Acts enabled estate planning simplification. For married couples, passing assets to the surviving spouse at the first spouse's death is now possible without losing significant tax benefits. 2. NEW POWER OF ATTORNEY (POA) FORMS ARE NOW AVAILABLE. Bottom line: The GA POA Act which went into law on July 1, 2017, gives Georgians the ability to force a third party, such as a financial institution, to accept the Power of Attorney and follow the agent’s directions. Morgan advices clients to update POW and Advance Directive for Healthcare every three years, so these documents are more likely to be accepted when needed. 3. YOU CAN PROTECT YOUR ASSETS NOW FOR GENERATIONS. Bottom line: Since July 1, 2018, Georgians now can use long-term trust planning to protect assets passed to children or other loved ones from unwanted outsiders, such as spouses in divorce, creditors and bankruptcy. It can be extended to eventually provide full benefits to grandchildren and lower generation family members. The term limit on trusts has been increased to 360 years, so multiple generations can benefit from the same tremendous third-party asset protection benefit. 4. CHANGES TO AN EXISTING IRREVOCABLE TRUST ARE MUCH EASIER. Bottom line: For those involved with an existing irrevocable trust, either as a Settlor (creator), Trustee or Beneficiary, it is now easier to modify these trusts. While it has traditionally been difficult to change an otherwise irrevocable trust, as of July 1, 2018 those days may be over in Georgia. The possible changes are almost endless. 5. NEW TAX PLANNING OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN CREATED. Bottom line: The combination of 2017 Tax Act and the July 1, 2017 changes under GA law open up more options to reduce both income taxes and wealth transfer taxes.
