Home—Where Life Unfolds

Home. Just four letters, yet it holds so much meaning. It’s our sanctuary, our foundation and the place where life unfolds. Home is where we begin and end each day, where our lives take shape and where our hearts find rest. While the specifics of what “home” looks like vary for each of us, its significance is universal.

Author Wendy Wunder captured it perfectly: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” With that in mind, this month’s issue focuses on what makes home special—from the warmth of shared meals and thoughtfully designed spaces to the people who bring it all to life.

Home should be where we are most comfortable. A reflection of our lives, our loves and our dreams. For me, that’s a cozy old-world European vibe. For others, it’s minimalism and cool, soothing tones. For still others, it’s high-energy or retro-inspired pieces that bring warmth.

This month, we had the privilege of connecting with local businesses and individuals who shape this community. Troy Hanson of Hanson Audio Video carries on a long-standing tradition of creating spaces that are both perfect for entertaining and winding down. Craig and Carolynn Reis at Best Furniture Gallery specialize in creating the perfect atmosphere for any room. Nancy Chase is highly skilled at reviving family heirlooms so they can continue to tell stories for generations to come.

Their stories highlight the creativity, resilience and heart that make this area feel like home. We hope that as you turn these pages, you’ll be inspired to strengthen your connections—whether within your neighborhood, your city or your own walls.

Many of our readers tell us they hold onto this magazine long after the month on its cover, treasuring it as a piece of home—whether as coffee table art or a source of inspiration. That’s a tradition we’re proud to uphold, and we remain committed to delivering the value you expect each month.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Here’s to making this March a celebration of the spaces and people that matter most.

Happy March!

Proudly serving Indian Hill, Mariemont, Madeira, Montgomery, Terrace Park & the Kenwood/Blue Ash Business District

Why Home Matters in Wealth Management

For Thom Guidi, innovation isn’t limited to technology or financial strategy; it starts at home. Growing up surrounded by engineers, Thom was often asking how things worked and how they could work better. That curiosity became a foundation for his career, shaping a thoughtful, forward-looking approach to wealth management.

Home, however, is more than the starting point of Thom’s story. It is his constant compass. When he and his wife built their home, it was a hands-on effort shared with family and friends, creating something both functional and deeply personal. Today, that space is filled with the energy of their two sons, from backyard football games to bike courses and pickleball matches.

Thom recognizes that “home” means something different to everyone—security, flexibility, legacy, or a gathering place for future generations. By combining practical innovation with an appreciation for complexity, Thom helps families move toward what matters most, with intention and confidence.

WHERE NEIGHBORS CAN SEE AND BE SEEN

Adventure Crew and longtime partner Roads Rivers and Trails (RRT) hosted their annual Outdoor Fashion Show in December at The Barn in Mariemont. Highlights of the evening included a social hour, a runway show featuring sustainable outdoor clothing and gear from the Milfordbased outdoor store and a pop-up shop where attendees could purchase items from the show. The event raised funds to support Adventure Crew's programs, which connect city teens with nature and each other through engaging outdoor adventures. AdventureCrew.org

BEST IN THE BUSINESS

Inside the Heart & Heritage of Best Furniture Gallery

At Best Furniture Gallery, they take their name seriously. The name of this family-owned business means more than the highest quality furniture—it’s also about heritage. Charlie and Eva Best opened the business in 1941 with a dream that now blooms under the ownership of husband-and-wife team Carolynn and Craig Reis. Since 2002, the Reis’ have grown the 85-year legacy to an 18,000-square-foot showroom that lives up to its namesake and then some.

An anchor on a prominent bend in the center of Ft. Thomas, Best Furniture Gallery is a deceiving delight for shoppers. What appears to be a typical storefront opens into a sprawling surprise, with room after room of charming living room, dining room and bedroom vignettes to see and touch. Experience various styles, finishes and sizes, test for comfort and feel thousands of fabrics and leathers before you commit.

Theirs is not a rehearsed welcome or a sales strategy. It’s hospitality at its finest. There’s no hovering, no pressure, no clipboard in hand; just a warm hello and the welcoming sounds of the Reis’ pups, Quincy & Lilly, from the office. Hands-on managers Carolynn and Craig are usually right there, greeting guests, answering questions, fluffing pillows, setting up deliveries and chatting like neighbors.

Carolynn & Craig Reis, Owners of Best Furniture in Ft. Thomas, KY, with their beloved pups , Quincy & Lilly.

“We’re one store. We’re not a chain,” says Craig. “Carolynn and I are mostly always here.”

That presence is intentional. For the Reises, furniture has never been transactional, it’s personal. Relationships are of the utmost importance to this caring couple.

“We take pride in carrying on the tradition of quality, service and caring. We’re not only about the product we sell the customer, but the customer themselves,” Craig explains.

Families who furnished their first homes with Best now return with their grown kids. Grandparents bring in grandchildren who once colored at the design counter. Many customers have been walking through these doors for decades.

“In our business, you naturally develop relationships,” Carolynn says. “Over the years, we’ve enjoyed helping generations of families. That’s one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.”

Carolynn and Craig’s standards are just as personal. They've carefully curated the brands and quality you can trust.

“We would never sell a piece of furniture to someone that we wouldn’t personally have in our own home,” Craig says. “If we wouldn’t live with it, we’re not going to ask our customers to.”

Carolynn adds, “Their comfort and trust matter to us.”

That means offering handcrafted pieces that pass the Reis test and walking away from trendy items that look good but won’t last. It means focusing less on flashy sales and more on how something will feel five or ten years from now.

“Quality is always first for us,” Craig proclaims. “Everything else flows from that.”

And if something does go wrong?

“We take service seriously,” Carolynn says. “When a legitimate issue arises, we’re going to bend over backwards to make it right.”

Best Furniture Gallery offers the kind of accountability you don’t see much anymore. A real person answers the phone. Problems get handled directly and quickly. Customers are not an order number, but friends.

In a world of big-box speed and one-click convenience, Craig and Carolynn are choosing a steadier, human approach. Relax, take your time and picture the pieces in your own living room, your own kitchen, your own life. At Best Furniture Gallery, it’s never just about the furniture. It’s about creating a place you can truly call home.

RESTORING THE PAST

PHOTOGRAPHY

NANCY CHASE BRINGS ANTIQUE FURNITURE BACK TO LIFE

Before a piece of antique furniture is restored, it pauses between past and present. Nancy Chase meets it there, hands on wood, seeing not damage and age, but possibility. For her, restoration is less about fixing and more about revealing what was always there.

The Cincinnati resident traces her appreciation for antiques back to her childhood in New England, where old furniture was simply part of everyday life.

“Antiques were just part of the landscape,” she recalls. “Most people had antique furniture and accessories. We bought antiques, we inherited antiques.”

Her mother’s love of visiting historic homes paired with Nancy’s childhood chores, quietly shaped what would later become her profession.

“I believe in the beauty of the past. The fine construction of good antique furniture is worth preserving. Antiques were made well to pass along to future generations.”
- NANCY CHASE

“It was my job at home to polish the furniture,” she adds. “Something that I just loved to do.”

After graduating from Bard College in New York’s Hudson Valley, she stayed in the area and apprenticed with an antique restorer serving private clients in New York City. The experience clarified an important distinction.

“Restoring antiques and creating something new are entirely different occupations,” she explains. “I am not a woodworker. I felt drawn to restoration—seeing something come back to life.”

That philosophy continues to guide her work today. Each project begins with a conversation.

“First, I discuss with the client what their expectations are,” Nancy explains.

Some pieces require full refinishing—taken down to bare wood and rebuilt with stain, shellac and wax— while others benefit from careful touch-ups, polishing and waxing.

“I will restore whatever the client has that they want restored,” she says. “I work both by the piece of furniture and by the hour, doing in-house repair and waxing on-site in homes.”

Nancy is especially drawn to antiques with hidden character.

“I enjoy working on antiques that have secrets,” she notes, describing writing desks, davenports and dressers with secret drawers or compartments. Dining tables, side tables and gaming tables also cross her path frequently, pieces that show the most wear simply because they’ve been well used.

“When I work on a piece, I believe it is temporarily mine,” Nancy says. “I restore each piece as if it were my own.”

The reward comes when it’s returned.

“Returning a piece to a client or finishing a day working in their home, it is always worth the reward of how

happy they are when they see how beautiful everything looks,” she says.

Nancy works primarily by referral. Her work can be found throughout the region and at one of Cincinnati’s most storied institutions. The Mercantile Library, a private member library on Walnut Street, recently underwent a major renovation. Interior designer Naomi Dallob of Smitten Interiors recommended Nancy when the library’s antique collection came out of storage in need of care.

“I repair antiques that have been donated to the library and take care of the upkeep to have it all be in good condition always,” Nancy explains.

Preservation matters deeply to Nancy. In a culture shaped by fast trends, antiques offer something lasting.

“I believe in the beauty of the past. The fine construction of good antique furniture is worth preserving,” she shares. “Antiques were made well to pass along to future generations. Through restoration the wood just glows with warmth.”

Nancy believes the best candidates for restoration are often the pieces people hesitate to give up—the ones that feel worn, tired or no longer quite right, but still matter. Restoration is often the best investment in preserving a piece’s longevity and value. But value isn’t always financial. Nancy dreams of opening a community-centered repair shop someday, a place for people to bring the objects they love most.

“I am looking for a business partner to help the dream come to life,” she says.

Many treasures, she notes, may not be worth much money, but they are worth everything to the people who own them, and helping restore that connection is what motivates her work.

In Nancy Chase’s hands, the past isn’t discarded—it’s carefully preserved, one piece at a time.

Lifestyle IMPROVEMENT

Hanson Audio Video offers elegant lighting for life.

Hanson Audio Video's Experience Center Showcases the Latest in Home Technology

In Greater Cincinnati, homeowners don’t have to imagine what the latest in home technology might look like— they can experience it firsthand. Hanson Audio Video’s Experience Center, located at 10800 Montgomery Road, offers immersive, hands-on demonstrations that redefine what modern home upgrades can mean for everyday living.

Hanson Audio Video offers elegant lighting for life.

“Our focus is simple: improving the lifestyle of our homeowners,” says Troy Hanson, founder and owner of Hanson Audio Video. “That can mean immersive entertainment—like media rooms, hi-fi audio systems, dedicated home theaters or even a golf simulator. It can also mean transforming outdoor living with landscape speakers, weatherproof TVs, motorized patio screens and thoughtfully designed landscape and security lighting that make relaxing and entertaining effortless.”

One of the most impactful upgrades the company offers is smart lighting. Inside the Experience Center, visitors can explore a wide range of both traditional and innovative lighting solutions designed for virtually any space.

“Thoughtfully designed lighting enhances life in profound ways,” Hanson says. “It highlights art, furnishings and food, and it creates scenes that elevate everyday activities at the touch of a button. Lighting also allows us to transition throughout the day—from bright, energizing tones in the morning to warm, calming light at night that signals it’s time to rest.”

Recognizing the importance of a truly immersive customer experience, Hanson Audio Video recently remodeled its showroom to reflect the expanded products and services the company has added since opening its doors.

“We wanted to create a space where people could see, hear and feel what’s possible,” Hanson explains. Today, the Experience Center features a dedicated lighting lab, hi-fi listening rooms, a media room, home theater displays, a golf simulator, outdoor living solutions and additional lifestyle-focused demonstrations.

Enjoy music like never before—explore the clarity of sound that comes from quality speakers in Hanson AV's listening rooms.
Find this hidden theater room in the Cincinnati Experience Center.

Motorized designer shades are another popular feature. Available in countless colors and styles, the shades can be automated based on time of day or season, or controlled on demand through remotes, keypads or touch panels.

“When shades and lighting work together, they significantly improve comfort, privacy and energy efficiency,” Hanson says.

Equally essential is the company’s enterprise-grade Wi-Fi networking. Designed to support an ever-growing number of connected devices, these systems deliver fast, reliable coverage throughout every corner of the home.

“We can talk about advanced technology and premium brands, but what matters most is that everything simply works,” Hanson emphasizes. “We offer good, better, best and ultimate solutions—tailored to each homeowner’s goals and budget. As the leading home technology

solutions provider in Southwest Ohio, our team includes system designers, project managers, technicians, electricians and a full-service support department.”

Founded in 1999, Hanson Audio Video has earned numerous industry certifications and national recognition.  In addition, Hanson has achieved top-tier status and numerous awards with all their major product partners.

SWEETGUM MANOR OFFERS A PLACE TO REST, RECONNECT & CREATE

REIMAGINING HOME

BY

From the moment you ascend the winding driveway to Sweetgum Manor (SWTGM) and take in the idyllic surroundings, your shoulders begin to relax. A thoughtfully restored urban oasis with sweeping panoramic views, the 4.5-acre property is perched above the bustling streets of Avondale. The Manor is the home of founder Abby Allen and an offering to the community. It’s a social sanctuary steeped in nature and historical significance where visitors can get off their screens, explore hands-on creativity and simply exhale.

“I WANTED TO REIMAGINE WHAT HOME MEANS AND CREATE A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE FEELS A SENSE OF EASE AND BELONGING."

Allen, who is also the mastermind behind branding agency Neon Butterfly, felt a strong calling when she noticed the home on the market. A decades-long student of yoga, Buddhism and wellness, she desired to create a retreat that made it easy for people to get away, even for an afternoon.

“I wanted to reimagine what home means and create a place where everyone feels a sense of ease and belonging. How can we live differently so we can take care of each other and thrive together?” she explains.

Visitors to SWTGM are greeted in the entryway by a swirling staircase, anchored by black-and-white imported Italian tiles and illuminated by a sculptural chandelier. This chandelier is a vestige of the previous owner, the late Dr. Odell Owens, former President of Cincinnati State and Hamilton County coroner. The residence was both a family home and host to luminaries, including Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou.

The original chandelier was transformed into cascading art for SWTGM by local visual artist Celene Hawkins, in collaboration

with the home’s interior designer, Latondra Newton, a former senior executive at Disney.

“It’s a great example of how we took what was already here and reimagined what it could be,” Allen says. “We were able to stay true to the core of the home, while highlighting the architectural details and beautiful views. It feels upscale, while staying cozy and approachable.”

SWTGM is deeply rooted in Cincinnati with a conscious effort to celebrate local artists, creators and small business owners. This is exemplified by their signature "Dewy Ground" scented candles, created with Columbia-Tusculum’s Manitou Candle Co.

The local connections extend to experiential workshops and dinners with Cincinnati culinary favorites, Juniper Seed’s Alecia Patroze and Nolia Kitchen’s James Beard-nominated Chef Jeff Harris. Even the Sweetgum Manor name, inspired by the native tree with spiky seed pods, is a nod to the surrounding landscape and region.

“Everything we do here is infused with a high level of intention, care and detail,” Allen notes.

The main floor of SWTGM, featuring a spacious, light-filled yoga studio, living room, dining room and gourmet kitchen, offers a serene, nature-infused backdrop for a variety of events. These

include their ongoing Present Day Digital Detox series, bi-weekly Restorative Yoga, Sound & Savor sound baths and Joy of the Table sessions with epicurean masters such as Top Chef’s Carla Hall. The home's lower level “speakeasy” offers more space to unwind, with a separate entrance, full bar, pool table and lounge-style seating.

Additionally, the SWTGM team curates unique experiences and off-sites for corporate teams and provides well-appointed options for creating your own. They offer personal and executive workspace memberships (a distinctive alternative to conventional coworking) and venue rentals for private events and productions.

“People actually look differently when they leave here,” Allen shares.“They can let their hair down, connect and be vulnerable. We provide a safe space for them to just be, which allows for transformation even in a short time.”

This month, the SWTGM team is giving back, launching neighborhood improvement and youth outreach programs, funded by the City of Cincinnati Safe and Clean Neighborhood

Fund, administered by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful. Looking ahead, they plan to convert the pool house into a wellness haven with a sauna, steam room and outdoor bar.

“We hope to bring people back together in a way that reminds us all of our shared humanity,” Allen imparts.
