Progress Over Perfection

January 2026 PUBLISHER

Tera Michelson | Tera.Michelson@CityLifestyle.com

Hellllooooo, 2026! The start of a new year is often filled with excitement and a sense of renewal. For others, it’s a stark wake-up call to what you really want to focus on this year. It’s a time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of Indian Hill City Lifestyle was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional and mental health. As a mom of four, busy business owner and wannabe 40-something-year-old athlete, I know a thing or two about juggling priorities (some seasons are better than others). Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: you wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. Similarly, indulging in a rich dessert from The European Café isn’t an everyday event, but it’s a delicious treat now and then. This year, what if we resolve to focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life? Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. Let’s choose progress over perfection. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

How a Terrace Park Lymphatic Studio is Reshaping Recovery & Wellness In a wellness world buzzing with quick fixes, node & needle stands out for something rare: results that last. Tucked into its new Terrace Park boutique, the studio is an intentional space where bodies reset, scars soften and clients finally feel at home in their own skin. Before she became known for her specialized lymphatic work, founder Carrie Riley spent years in a very different, but connected, field. “I had been a mental health therapist specializing in grief and trauma,” Carrie explains. “I realized many clients needed additional ways to support their mental health. Therapists were already using breathwork and yoga, and I found myself drawn to bodywork.” That curiosity pulled her back to school to become a licensed massage therapist. There, one technique kept changing everything. “The technique that helped them the most was lymphatic drainage,” Carrie shares. “It eased inflammation and calmed their nervous system in a way traditional bodywork couldn’t always reach.” What started as an add-on soon became her calling. Carrie opened her first node & needle in Milford in July 2024 and her second in Terrace Park last November. The studios are dedicated to advanced lymphatic care, post-surgical recovery and restorative skin work. As she opened her studios, Carrie noticed many clients shared overlapping concerns. “You can almost picture a Venn Diagram,” she says. “Surgery, inflammation, scar tissue, emotional stress—it’s all connected.” Half of her clients arrive after medical or cosmetic procedures, often frustrated that they’re doing “everything right” yet still feel swollen, tight or discouraged. “When clients are months or years past surgery and still unhappy with the appearance of their scars, it weighs on them,” Carrie explains.

Learning paramedical tattooing—inkless scar revision, camouflage techniques and restorative pigmentation—expanded what healing looks like. Her restorative work now supports clients with surgical scars, stretch marks, acne scarring and post-chemo or radiation changes. “Watching someone look in the mirror and finally see progress they had given up on is deeply meaningful for me,” she says. The Terrace Park opening was prompted by her loyal eastside following. “A large number of clients were traveling from Indian Hill, Terrace Park, Madeira and Loveland,” she explains. The new boutique setting offers more room for services and for training practitioners from around the country in the Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage method. What sets node & needle apart is the way each session begins: with a conversation. “I take time to understand what someone is carrying physically and emotionally, and I adapt the session to what their body needs that day,” Carrie notes. Her signature service, NeuroSomatic Lymphatic Drainage™, exclusive to the studio, is a blend of lymphatic techniques, craniosacral therapy and vagus nerve stimulation designed to downshift the entire nervous system. For those unfamiliar with lymphatic drainage, Carrie describes it simply: “It’s a gentle technique that supports natural fluid movement, inflammation reduction, and cellular waste removal.” After surgery, when the system is stressed and sluggish, that support becomes essential. One memorable client with severe arthritis swelling experienced such dramatic improvement after a single session that her photos became a go-to example in the studio’s marketing. She now returns every six to eight weeks for what she lovingly calls her “overall overhaul.” Looking ahead, Carrie is expanding post-mastectomy and breast scar services. She and a therapist are completing a six-month immersion program to offer this work with even greater depth, and she hopes to provide more education for families and caregivers navigating recovery. Her core message remains simple: lymphatic care isn’t just for major surgeries or chronic conditions. “You don’t have to be recovering from something big to benefit,” Carrie says. “When you give your lymphatic system and nervous system a chance to reset, your whole body feels the difference.” For healing, clarity or a calmer way to step into the new year, node & needle offers a truly restorative experience. node & needle | 614 Wooster Pike, Suite 6, Terrace Park | 513.399.6060 | Hello@ nodeandneedle.com | nodeandneedle.com

Find Wellness in the Woods with Forest Bathing

Forest Therapy Guide Pam Lowe Cho ends each session with a reflective discussion around tea.

Forest bathing, or “Shinrin-yoku,” may be a concept that is new to many — but it is also one steeped in tradition, lending a natural practice to any journey of healing and wellness. Forest Therapy Guide Pam Lowe Cho, Greater Cincinnati resident and Principal of Forest Bathing & Garden Design, LLC, was happy to field questions on the subject.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE GREATER CINCINNATI COMMUNITY, AND WHY IS IT SPECIAL TO YOU?

A: I grew up in Terrace Park, so Cincinnati has always felt like home. One of my greatest joys is walking the trails along the Ohio River with my husband and exploring the incredible parks throughout our region. My dad still lives in our family home in Terrace Park, so we’re often walking familiar trails in that area. It’s a constant reminder of why our community is so special.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL DEFINITION OF FOREST BATHING?

A: Forest bathing is the practice of reducing stress by mindfully immersing yourself in a natural environment like a forest, park or backyard. I guide groups of 6-12 people in parks on easy trails, stopping for meditation, nature poetry, quiet reflection and a ceremonial tea.

Q: WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MOST IMPORTANT BENEFITS OF FOREST BATHING?

A: There’s been extensive research on forest bathing since it originated in Japan in the 1980s. During my training with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) in Phoenix, as well as in Japan and South Korea, I’ve seen firsthand how forest bathing can help relax our minds and CONTINUED >

bodies. Physically, forest bathing has been shown to reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure and pulse rates, boost immunity and enhance sleep. Mentally, forest bathing has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression, increase attention, creativity and cognitive clarity.

Q: WHAT LED YOU TO BEGIN SHARING FOREST BATHING WITH OTHERS?

A: I spent 15 years as a corporate executive— including time at The White House—and I’ve run my executive coaching practice, Trek Executive Coaching, for the past 16 years. During the pandemic, I began inviting clients outdoors. We’d walk on a trail or meet at a picnic table, and the impact was immediate. People opened up and conversations flowed more freely. Clients can work with me and my business partner Wimberg Landscaping to create a meditation garden in their own backyard for ongoing wellbeing practices Humans lived and worked outdoors for hundreds of thousands of years; it’s only in the last 200 years that we moved into insulated boxes— houses, offices, cars. Our bodies crave nature, and the more time we spend outdoors, the more our nervous systems relax.

Q: CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF FOREST BATHING?

A: Forest bathing originated in Japan in the 1980s as part of a public health initiative in response to an increase in chronic physical and mental health conditions as Japan became a more industrialized and urbanized country. The idea was simple: reconnect people with nature and the forest to restore balance. Join Forest Therapy Guide Pam Lowe Cho on a meditative tour through a local forest. Certified by the Association of Nature & Forest Therapy (ANFT), she leads forest bathing walks for friends, families and colleagues in Greater Cincinnati parks and nature centers. She also offers presentations including the history, science and personal stories behind the practice of Shinrin-yoku. In 2021, the American Diabetes Association ADA reported that 11.6% of Americans were living with diabetes, and 29.2% of Americans over the age of 65 were living with diabetes. Statistics like these continue to rise, and one local resident has dedicated her life to helping others seek treatment. “My goal is to develop treatment plans that are guideline-directed but truly individualized,” says Dr. Ali Johns of Precision Diabetes & Endocrinology, “so each patient receives care that fits their body, their goals and their life.” Dr. Johns provides a wide range of general endocrinology services: diabetes management, thyroid and thyroid cancer disease management, bone health care, menopause and perimenopause care, weight management and pituitary and adrenal condition management. School of Medicine. That’s where the native of Buffalo, New York, met her future husband, who was born and raised in Cincinnati. “We ‘couples matched’ to University of Alabama at Birmingham for our residencies,” she points out. Then, the couple moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Health. Dr. Johns completed her fellowship in Endocrinology & Metabolism in 2022. Then, they settled in Cincinnati. “I was drawn to medicine because it’s a field where you can use evidence-based knowledge, compassion, and problem solving… while helping patients navigate vulnerable moments,” she says. “Seeing patients’ progress and being with them along the way is extremely rewarding. Each patient brings a unique story, and understanding the underlying physiology allows me to help them make sense of what they are experiencing.” Dr. Johns explains that endocrine conditions often require ongoing care and partnership, and that she enjoys being able to walk alongside patients on their journeys, celebrating their wins, empowering them with knowledge and helping them troubleshoot challenges.

“Endocrine conditions are often invisible to others but deeply impactful to each individual patient on a day-to-day basis,” she says. “There’s something incredibly meaningful about seeing a patient regain stability, confidence and quality of life.” One common misconception about diabetes, she says, is that simply “fixing your diet” alone will “fix your diabetes.” “While nutrition is incredibly important—and often one of the most powerful tools we have—it’s only one part of a much larger metabolic picture. Diabetes, especially type 2, is not simply a ‘food problem,’” she says. “Similarly, obesity is not just a matter of willpower or eating less. Both conditions are complex endocrine and metabolic disorders influenced by genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, physical activity and natural changes in the body over time.” Healthy nutrition is certainly a cornerstone of healthy living, Dr. Johns points out, but it works best when paired with other evidence-based strategies like regular movement, restorative sleep, stress reduction and, when appropriate, medication. “Understanding that diabetes is multi-factorial helps remove guilt and empowers people to approach their care with a comprehensive, realistic plan,” she says, “one that supports long-term metabolic health.” Dr. Allison Johns, Precision Diabetes & Endocrinology | 9050 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati | 513.960.5360 | MyPrecisionEndo.com

Finding Balance in the New Year Learn How Ref lection, Self-Compassion & Therapy Support Mental Well-Being & Renewal A fresh new year offers us the opportunity to reset after the holiday season's rush. While many take this time to slow down and reflect, the pressure to set resolutions or chase a “new me” is everywhere, filling our feeds and conversations with messages about improvement and change. “So many people feel pressured to start a new year doing things differently from the past year,” shares Jaime Bishop, LPCC-S. “They set goals or resolutions that are often unrealistic and unattainable, setting themselves up to fail. This affects their emotional well-being; feeling like they don't have enough discipline to succeed and make the changes that they feel are healthier for them.” Jaime, an outpatient telehealth therapist at the Lindner Center of Hope, has more than 30 years of experience in the mental health field. She has observed that self-compassion and realistic intentions create the foundation for lasting growth. “Instead of harsh goals that may set you up to fail, focus on gratitude and small, sustainable actions,” she says. “For example, instead of saying, ‘I want to feel happier,’ try ‘I will spend 15 minutes a day outside,’ or ‘I will practice gratitude three times a week.’” Jaime encourages people to start the year with reflection rather than reinvention. “The new year is a good time to assess your emotional landscape,” she says. “What brought you stress and what brought you peace in the past year? What activities, routines or habits supported your well-being and which ones drained it?”

She recommends setting boundaries with social media, taking time to unplug and creating online spaces that inspire rather than compare. “Our body and mind are deeply linked,” Jaime explains. “Practice consistent sleep habits, limit screen time and make time for movement that feels good, like yoga or hiking.” During the winter months, Jaime notes that it’s common to feel a dip in motivation or mood. “Get outside, explore and experience winter outdoor activities such as snow hikes, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing,” Jaime encourages. “Take advantage of the sun when you can by taking a walk or visiting a local botanical garden.” Taking an inventory of stressors can also help reveal where therapy can provide additional support. Therapy offers a safe space to process patterns, gain awareness and learn practical tools to navigate life’s challenges.

Jaime Bishop, LPCC-S, outpatient telehealth therapist at the Lindner Center of Hope.

“It provides an opportunity to self-examine and explore,” Jaime notes. “You may learn new techniques to manage stress, improve communication and strengthen self-compassion.” At the Lindner Center of Hope, Jaime and her colleagues take a collaborative approach to care. The center offers inpatient and outpatient programs, group therapy, psychological testing and a range of evidence-based treatments tailored to each individual. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” explains Jaime. “Our team works together to create a plan that fits each person’s unique needs.” She notes that the work holds deep meaning for every provider involved. “Providers are compassionate and passionate about the work that we do,” enthuses Jaime. “It is a privilege to support you in healing and recovery.” Her message for the new year is one of patience, perspective and grace. “Be gentle with yourself,” Jaime says. “You’re doing the best you can. Growth and healing take time, and progress matters more than perfection.” For anyone facing a difficult season she offers a heartfelt reminder, one that exemplifies the compassion she brings to her work: “You got this! Up to this point, you are 100% effective at getting through difficult days! Come as you are, we’ll meet you there.” To learn more about the services and resources available at the Lindner Center of Hope, visit LindnerCenterofHope.org.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”

New Year. New Chapter. Unfiltered conversations for designing what’s next– in family, lifestyle, and business.

USE ONLY 1% OF YOUR DAY FOR LASTING IMPACT

Have you ever made it somewhere on time, but your head and heart took a wrong turn to someplace else? Time management only gets you there–energy management dictates how you show up once you’re there. If we use 1% of our day, just 15 minutes for the following four elements, we can make lasting change on our vitality and the impact we have on others.

Purposeful Movement–4 minutes Movement leads to weight management, mood improvement and physical endurance, among other benefits. Strive for a daily walk, standing during portions of virtual meetings and flexing your joints as the day progresses.

Slow Breathing Before Meals–1 minute Eating lunch at our desks, having meals in our cars or being otherwise engaged while eating keeps our body in fight-or-flight mode. Thirty seconds of deep breathing before lunch and dinner resets our nervous system and improves digestion.

Mid-Day Check-In–5 minutes Whether it's sitting in carpool lines, heading to sports or leaving work, we close one chapter to begin a new one every midday. Ask yourself the following questions as you turn the page: • What went well earlier today? • How can I best transition to this next chapter? • What would make the rest of the night great?

Intentional Focus–5 minutes To whom can you show unwavering attention? Having an in-person conversation with the phone put away, writing a note of thanks or playing with your child all show the other person that they are cared for and matter. These micro-moments, stacked daily, grow exponentially. You will see and feel a difference, and so will those around you. No routines to overhaul, no hours to set aside—just 1% of your day, making a remarkable difference on the other 99%.
