LIFESTYLE LETTER

Some Days & Most Days

January 2025 PUBLISHER

Deborah Mekenese Deborah.Mekenese@CityLifestyle.com E D I TO R

Tera Michelson | Tera.Michelson@CityLifestyle.com

Following the hustle and bustle of the holidays, January can sometimes feel a bit flat. While we've just been launched into a brand-new year, the chill of winter and the allure of coziness can often lead us to kick off with less-than-stellar habits. While the new year is full of excitement, goals and horizons, it can also be filled with reminders of past attempts at good intentions gone awry... and wondering if perhaps this is finally the year we'll do what we set out to do. We approached this issue of Indian Hill City Lifestyle with the mindset of valuing sustainable, lifelong habits and tweaks that will pay dividends over the long haul. Whether they be physical, emotional or mental health focused, your overall well-being is the ultimate end goal. I've committed to a lot of varying physical endeavors over the years–from training for a half ironman to snowboarding every possible weekend or just relearning to move properly after a life-altering injury in my late 20s. What I’ve learned over the years is that in every season there is value, but also a lesson. Sometimes that lesson is perseverance, other times it’s dedication, and in others, patience. When it comes to anything in life–business, finance, food, home and personal health–it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle–it’s what you do most days. For instance, having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brulée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while is a delight. Enjoying a holiday getaway or taking a mental health day is not something we seek daily, but rather delight in selectively; and that focused selection is often what makes savoring it oh so sweet. It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym, like the brand new Alloy Personal Training studio in Montgomery AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been craving. It’s not what you do some days– it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you–we’re rooting for you! STRONGER TOGETHER: get started & get fit

What happens when you bring two strong elements together? An Alloy is created—and it’s stronger and better together. At Alloy Personal Training, this is the root concept behind the drive to help clients on their fitness journeys: stronger together. Owners Kevin and Elizabeth Fischio were the first to bring Alloy Personal Training to Greater Cincinnati when they opened their Montgomery gym last summer. As a husband-and-wife team, they each bring strengths to the business and they, too, are stronger together. Kevin is the numbers guy and Elizabeth brings years of fitness experience, having once owned her own yoga, Pilates and barre studio. Both are passionate about bringing this training experience to the community. They are invested in building relationships and know each of their clients by name. “’Stronger together’ is our motto,” says Kevin. “We really believe in this system and are excited to bring Alloy to our town. One-on-one personal training can be very expensive and even intimidating,” he explains. “Our small group approach allows for a lot of attention and accountability.” “With Alloy’s small groups, you’re not in it alone,” Elizabeth adds. “You are a part of a community.” CONTINUED >

With small group personal training sessions of no more than six at a time, Alloy’s trainers are accessible and affordable, offering customized workouts and modifications to match fitness levels. Alloy’s proven program has been cultivated over 30 years, developed by physical therapists, personal trainers and exercise scientists. “All fitness levels are welcome!” says Kevin. “You don’t have to come in here knowing what to do—we’ve got people here to show you how to do it, correctly and without injuring yourself. Focused attention is a big key to the success of our clients.” Elizabeth knows the struggles that can come with getting started from her own fitness journey. “Every day is a new day," she shares. "Even if you make just one small, positive change, it will build up to make a big difference.” No matter where you are in your fitness journey, Alloy’s door is open to help you meet your fitness goals. “I get it!” says Elizabeth. “Just walking through the door is a big step. People come in with a variety of goals,” she explains. “Some might come in to get fit for a wedding or special event, while others just want to be able to hike with their grandson or climb the stairs without getting winded.” Join forces with Alloy Personal Training to get “Stronger Together.” New clients begin with an appointment for a Starting Point Session, led by the Head Trainer to discuss special needs, set goals, sample equipment and get a personalized plan. Choose from a two- or three-times per week membership with customized workouts in small groups with experienced Personal Trainers. Monthly accountability sessions keep clients on track for successful results. “You can do this! Don’t feel intimidated to come in and get started,” Elizabeth says.

Get Started with Alloy The hardest part of the Alloy fitness journey? Getting through the door! Make an appointment and Alloy’s experts will lead you through the rest.

Taylor DeVito keeps it real. She enjoys sharing the behind-the-scenes views from the varying roles in her life. As a social media influencer, she gives followers a behind-the-scenes look into her travels. As a Realtor for Coldwell Banker and with Daley Design + Build in Madeira, she shares behind-the-scenes views of home builds and client celebrations. Here, the busy professional welcomes us behind-the-scenes to learn about one of her favorite roles—as an NFL cheerleader with the Ben-Gals. DeVito is in her third year on the Ben-Gals team, one of 30 members committed to cheering on the Bengals and entertaining their fans each football season. From auditions to rehearsals, being one of the BenGals is a year-round effort that is managed above and beyond her other roles in life. “A lot of fans don’t know the time and preparation the cheerleaders put into game days,” says DeVito, “but we get there 5-6 hours before kick off to get ready. Our appearance is important, but we also have to run through 15 routines and we're constantly learning new choreography. It’s something I actively choose to do and work at—it’s my sport.” Twenty-four-year-old DeVito takes the role seriously. She accepts the pressure of being a public figure with grace, wisely using her great-grandmother as a filter. “When I'm posting on social media, I have to be very careful of what I'm choosing to post,” she shares, “and making sure it's a good reflection of not only my own personal character but also representing the Bengals and my Ben-Gals sisters. I don’t ever post on social media without thinking, ‘What would my Great Grandma think of this?’” CONTINUED >

"I love to dance. I love to represent the city I love doing what I love to do. It is an incredible honor and a proud accomplishment."

DeVito fell in love with competitive dancing and tumbling at the young age of three, progressing through the ranks at her local dance studio, Midwest Elite Dance Center on the east side of Cincinnati. Her high school cheer coach was a former Ben-Gal who prepared DeVito to follow in her footsteps. In 2015, DeVito participated in the Junior Ben-Gals program, dancing at a Bengals game alongside other women who would someday become her teammates. College commitments at the University of Cincinnati took her away from dance for a while, but she really missed it. When Ben-Gals auditions came around, she chased her dream and made it come true. “No regrets!” DeVito exclaims. “I love to dance. I love to represent the city I love doing what I love to do. It is an incredible honor and a proud accomplishment,” she says. The behind-the-scenes look at the Ben-Gals reveals a supportive sisterhood of driven, hard-working and intelligent, professional women.

“We have nurses, educators, engineers, women at the corporate level in marketing and finance and we have me in real estate. Everybody on our team is either a full-time student or has a fulltime career,” DeVito explains. The Ben-Gals share a love for their jobs, the city of Cincinnati and the Bengals. “The Ben-Gals have truly shaped my 20s to be full of health and fitness which I will carry with me the rest of my life,” she says. “I hope to inspire people to not be afraid of the unknown— of what could be next,” DeVito says. “I had no idea if I would make the team three years ago, but I went for it. It’s never too late to chase your dreams. Take a chance, because you never know what's on the other side.” For more behind-the-scenes adventures with Taylor DeVito, follow her on Instagram: @tdevito00.

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2/3 cup raisins • Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Dr. John Zook & Dr. Leslie Zook at their Glendale clinic.

The idea of chiropractic care for pets might be a new concept to some—but for Leslie Zook, D.C. and John Zook, D.C., it’s all in a day’s work. “Veterinarians do an excellent job providing healthcare for animals who need immunizations, prescriptions and general surgeries,” Dr. John explains. “But at Cincinnati Animal Chiropractic, we specialize in mobility. Our focus is to provide an all-natural approach, helping animals out of pain and discomfort without the use of drugs or surgery.” According to Dr. John, there are only about 7,000 certified animal chiropractors in the world. It just so happens, Dr. Leslie and her husband Dr. John live and practice right here in Greater Cincinnati. The couple first launched Glendale Family Chiropractic in 2014 and, over the years, have assisted thousands of neighbors with wellness and maintenance care. Then, in 2022, Atlas, their German Shepard, lost sensation and muscle strength in his hind legs and couldn't walk. Two veterinarians advised the family to prepare for euthanization—but Dr. Leslie and Dr. John thought a chiropractic care approach might help. It was a game-changing realization. After receiving chiropractic treatment, Atlas enjoys life today with no issues whatsoever. That experience inspired the Zooks to enroll in an animal chiropractic school themselves. After enrolling in Options for Animals in 2023, completing over 210 hours and passing the required board exam they’re both now certified by the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association. Some of the more common conditions that Cincinnati Animal Chiropractic treats include those of elderly animals struggling to complete everyday tasks, and animals who appear stiff or rigid when walking. Additionally, the practice provides care for foster animals in the care of some local organizations, such as the Stray Animal Adoptions Program. “Providing care to assist an animal in finding their forever home brings us an immense feeling of joy,” Dr. Leslie says with pride. Pets who are limping or dragging of a limb, have issues related to spinal disc injury, or are coping with degenerative disc disease, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), arthritis and hip dysplasia have also received treatment from the practice, as have working animals unable to perform routine tasks. "We specialize in mobility. Our focus is to provide an all-natural approach, helping animals out of pain and discomfort without the use of drugs or surgery." The Zooks treat any animals with a spine: they’ve treated dogs, cats, bearded dragons and horses. “Barn calls” are sometimes necessary. “A division of our practice includes ‘barn calls’ to treat local horses,” Dr. John says, explaining that many of the horses they see are utilized for various levels of competition. “Our main focus is addressCincinnati Animal Chiropractic on a ing any mobility issues a horse may "barn call" to treat both horse & rider. have, along with providing care to promote long-term wellness.” It is a win-win scenario: As board-certified human chiropractors, the practice is often able to treat both riders and animals in the same onsite visit. But no matter the patient, Dr. John says, “Our goal from day one was simple: treat each patient how we would like to be treated. That means little to no wait times, proper diagnostics, ensuring the best overall outcomes for each patient we see and providing continued wellness care to prevent conditions from returning. Dr. Leslie doesn’t hesitate to share her favorite part of the job—how it can change lives. “Seeing the look on an owner's face, smiling with joy and tears of excitement,” she says, “when a beloved pet who arrived into our care unable to even walk is able to leave, happy and easily able to live life once again to its fullest. It can be a life-changing moment for the pet,” she says. It can also have a significant influence on the pet’s owners as well. “The impact of providing animal chiropractic extends much further than helping an animal,” Dr. John says. “When an animal’s quality of life benefits, it affects the entire family.” CincinnatiAnimalChiropractic.com | 1125 Congress Avenue, Cincinnati | 513.805.2040
