LIFESTYLE LETTER

Explore Your World I come from a long line of women who loved to travel. My great grandmother used to say, “I’m like an old dog, you just open the car door and I’ll jump in.” Being that these small town Alabama women were anything but wealthy and worked and raised families, this zest for travel was something I always admired, something that seemed to ignite a joy and curiosity within them. The earliest female travelers set off on pilgrimages to the Holy Land. One of the first records of such travel is from the 4th century, a woman named Egeria traveled to the Holy Land with the Bible as her guide, writing letters back home titled ‘dear ladies.’ Then for centuries travel was an experience simply not offered to women. It would not be until after the Industrial Revolution that women of wealth were allowed a ‘Grand Tour’ of their own with a chaperone. As decades passed travel became more and more accessible to women of various economic backgrounds. How thankful I am for travel. How thankful I am to get to do something I love. How thankful I am to feel the vastness of views. How thankful I am for each step of each hike because who knows when age and health might prevent this type exploring. How thankful I am that I can share these experiences and encourage others and my own daughter to enjoy this big beautiful earth with confidence and respect. May travel deepen your appreciation for other cultures, may it strengthen your bond with this land, and may it empower you to grow in your own experiences. I also love how travel makes me so grateful for home and family. We hope you enjoy this 'Explore' issue and that it ignites your love for adventure. “In her heart also there are springing up strange desires. She too is enamoured of heavy winds, vast panoramas, and expanses of the sea.” - E.M. Forester ‘Room With A View’

A story of adventure, hope, and healing

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY RUTH BOOKER BEAN

Heartbroken, devastated and shocked, my mother looked at me not even three hours after my dad passed away and said, “You’re going on your trip.” She wasn’t talking about just any trip. It was THE TRIP. The trip I had been dreaming of since I was a child-AFRICA! Two weeks later, I packed up my grief and sweet memories along with two 49.9-pound suitcases and boarded a plane to Kenya. And I want to tell you all about it. But I want to tell you about it as if we are old friends visiting over a cup of coffee (well, I don’t drink coffee..so a Diet Coke). I wasn’t seeking out a trip to Africa last fall. I was in the midst of grieving my firstborn leaving for college-yes, I know that sounds super dramatic, but that is the only way to describe it. My best friend, Margaret, emailed me one day and asked if I could write a letter of recommendation for a mission trip with our church. Africa? Without me? Not a chance! The deadline had passed, but God orchestrated a way for me to go-He knew what was coming and how much I would need to be there. Our church’s team of eight partnered with a team from a church in Kansas, flying halfway across the world to support our missionaries from all over Africa. We spent months preparing lessons and activities for the missionary children packing eight 50-pound suitcases with balls, paper, crayons, snacks, glue guns, popsicle sticks, and goody bags for all the families with things they miss from the states-the most wanted items being cake mix and taco seasoning! Africa! I had a lot of time to think during the daunting, 24-hour journey. In my head I kept saying “My dad died. He DIED. And, I am in AFRICA, and I won’t get to tell him about it when I get back.” Oh, but the pure vastness and wonder I was about to experience calmed those heavy thoughts. Our African adventure started with a safari in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve. From the moment we entered, all the worries and distractions melted away as we were transported to this magical place of awe and wonder. It sounds silly, but the theme song from The Lion King was on repeat in my head as we drove into the conservancy. (And maybe coming out of my mouth a little too, much annoying Margaret.) “It’s the circle of life and it moves us all through despair and hope Through faith and love ‘Til we find our place on the path unwinding in the circle of life.” CONTINUED >

We were instantly immersed into the animals’ natural habitats, visitors fortunate enough to have a front row seat to the circle of life. My deep grief was met with great hope as I saw so much new life! Babies! Babies everywhere-hippo babies, zebra babies, hyena babies, lion babies, and I even got excited and I scared our guide nearly to death squealing to look at a simple little lamb which I could totally see in Birmingham, Ala. But babies, y’all! This is a good time to pause and tell you that I am obsessed with animals and taking pictures. So imagine the great joy I had when we arrived at our safari camp, Saruni Leopard Hill, to see giraffes walking past our “glamping tent” and monkeys and baboons showing off their babies as we ate our meals. My favorite day of the safari was waking up before the sun and heading out to find the most majestic pride of lions welcoming the day. Two baby cubs were “roughhousing” as my daddy would say, and the king and his “lioness

of the hour” were hanging out side-by-side ignoring all of us gawking at them. The king was like the Great and Powerful Oz, as if he said to his pride of 30-plus lions, “Pay no attention to the stalkers in the jeeps.” As we drove up to a nearby area of thick shrubberies and trees, we heard a lion roaring and the trees shaking. As the chaos commenced in the bushes, groups of four, five, and six lions were gathered, unfazed by the commotion and by us. We waited patiently to see what was happening behind that tree. Minutes later, a huge, domineering male lion appeared with a freshly killed baby zebra. Circle of life. I thought I would feel sad at this sight, but it was eerily beautiful (and gross, of course). As we watched the lion enjoy his kill, about eight young lions surrounded him, pawing at him for just a little taste. The little lions waited patiently with mannerisms so similar to a dog waiting for a treat. The male lion would eventually share his kill with the pride, but he had first dibs and wasn’t afraid to let them know it! CONTINUED >

There were four of us in our jeep with our guide, Solomon. As we bumped along the savanna finding different animals, we would make up a dialogue of the animals’ lives. “I think those two lions are just ‘talking.’ Well, maybe they are dating because he licked her ear?” Solomon was so good to put up with us. We laughed a lot, and it was good for my soul! The vastness of this beautiful place cannot be seen through a photograph. Words fail to describe the beauty of God’s creation. The animals are magnificent. The giraffes and zebras are plentiful and seem the most gentle. The hippo families are large with so many babies with an odor that will knock you out. The elephants are so intriguing to watch as they intricately wrap their strong trunks around the grass, then use their feet to help uproot this yummy snack. The leopard is discreet and intelligent, lurking in the shadows. He made us wait over an hour to see him. He had hidden his kill in a tree and was waiting until nightfall to enjoy his dinner. Meanwhile, hyenas were circling just hoping for one little morsel to drop from the tree. Observing all of God’s creatures in their natural habitat was an awesome reminder that every living thing was created for a purpose. Human beings are no different. We were created for a purpose, and even in death, there is a purpose. Each morning of the trip, I received the sweetest surprise-mail delivered on my pillow. My dear friend Margaret knew this would be a tough trip for me, so she orchestrated mail call every single day from precious friends and family back home encouraging me, praying for me, and begging me not to pack a lion cub in my suitcase or get arrested for trying to pet one. These days we all seem skeptical of other people, but sometimes people are angels here on earth, here to lift us up and help carry our burdens when the weight of grief and pain is crushing our souls. Speaking of amazing people, we had the privilege of being invited into the village and home of a local Maasi tribe. As we arrived at their village, we were met by about 20 Maasi men and women dressed in traditional clothing dancing and singing. They even grabbed our hands, let us don their handmade jewelry and dance with them. This traditional dance was followed by a jumping contest among the single men. The one who jumps the highest should be the one who catches the eye of a Maasi woman. The Maasi people live life completely different than us-no running water or electricity. Their homes are modest, mud huts with one tiny window. They live very simply yet exude joy and gratitude for what they have. After four days of a magical safari and hospitality from the Maasi people, we packed up and headed to our next destination to support our African missionaries and their families. That day was my daddy’s birthday. Oh, I wanted to tell him about the lions and how close we were to all the animals! I wanted to tell him I thought

32

about that time we made an audition tape to be on The Amazing Race, and what it would have been like to experience Africa with him! I just wanted to say “Happy Birthday, Daddy! I love you!” just One. More. Time. God provided a sweet day of laughter and sharing funny stories about my dad as we traveled to our next destination to support our African missionaries. It was such perfect timing to experience the grandeur and excitement of the safari because my heart was so full and ready to go and serve. My first letter at our new destination was from my daughter. She wrote the following verse from Isaiah 6:8 and added my name, and tears of pure joy and peace filled my eyes: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here I am. Send Ruth Bean.’” My heart is still broken, but the incredible experiences I had in Africa helped heal my heart and realize that I can live in a world where grief and joy can coexist.

EXPLORE COSTA RICA ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARTHA HOELZER

Boarding the plane with only a destination in mind and no lodging confirmed for my arrival might have been one of the more adventurous things I’ve done when flying out of the country. But then, I once kicked off a six-week backpacking trip across Europe having everything stolen out of my hotel room (which had been booked in advance) upon arriving that afternoon. So, changing plans on the fly doesn’t rattle me. Besides, I’ve found there’s almost always a place to stay— unless there’s a major event happening, and even then, being open to possibility often opens unexpected doors. That experience taught me to stay flexible. In Costa Rica, that same openness led me to a hidden gem in Tamarindo—a quieter, more peaceful stretch away from the bustle of the touristy beach town on the Pacific Coast that I might never have discovered otherwise. This kind of travel isn’t for everyone, I realize, but for me serendipity became the theme of my trip. A shared shuttle ride from the airport

turned unexpectedly fortuitous when our driver, hearing that a fellow passenger was staying nearby, suggested a charming place for me as well. Within walking distance, I discovered Captáin Suizo a peaceful beachfront hotel where I enjoyed several meals. One spontaneous conversation over dinner at the bar turned into new friendships and more shared meals at neighboring beach restaurants. A few days later those shared shuttle ride companions invited me to breakfast just down the road at Sueño del Mar, a charming boutique hotel overlooking the Pacific. These moments, unplanned but deeply memorable, shaped the rhythm of my time in Tamarindo and the rest of my trip. CONTINUED >

The coastline here is ideal for peaceful walks, early morning runs, or even practicing yoga along the white sands when the tide is out and the ocean glows bright blue. The waves vary—gentle enough for beginners learning to surf to bigger breaks that challenge more experienced surfers. In the evening, sunset cruises offer a relaxing way to end the day. While Tamarindo is known for its popularity with tourists—with its array of restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping—this quieter stretch felt much more relaxing and laid-back. After several days on the coast, I ventured inland to explore the rainforest, volcano and cloud forest regions in the center of the country. Traveling around Costa Rica is relatively easy. Car rentals and private shuttles are readily available, and public transportation is straightforward to navigate. Traveling inland, Arenal Volcano rises majestically above Lake Arenal, and a boat ride across the lake offers panoramic views while making the journey toward Monteverde shorter, more scenic and enjoyable. The Arenal region is known for its lush rainforests and natural hot springs and dramatic landscapes. Nestled in this area is Rancho Margot, a carbon neutral eco resort and working regenerative farm where I stayed a few days. Embedded in the rainforest, each morning I woke to misty views from my balcony and saw how varied microclimates shifted the weather in the area. The resort offers yoga classes, farm-to-table meals, and guided tours that showcase their permaculture systems and renewable energy practices. I joined a yoga class and practiced my photography trying to capture hummingbirds drinking nectar from flowers growing on the property. CONTINUED >

As storms disrupted my travel plans home, I took it as a sign to extend the journey and travelled a couple of hours away to Monteverde. Nestled in the highlands, this rare cloud forest ecosystem offers both adventure and serenity. I joined a small guided hike that brought together travelers from around the world, each eager to learn, connect, and share the experience. As the trail unfolded, so did conversations—and by the end, new friendships had formed. These hikes are led by guides to help spot amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals—to share their educational knowledge to enrich the experience and help point out what otherwise might be missed. Others from our hiking group wanted a more dramatic experience, which the area has plenty to offer from zip lining through the canopy, bungee jumping, or exploring the area on horseback. I opted for another slower pace tour visiting local farms that produce coffee, chocolate and sugar cane, while others took hikes with suspension bridges that connect a network of trails through the treetops and overlook waterfalls. Search for the strangler fig (a type of ficus tree in this region) that strangles the tree it uses as a host and leaving behind a hollow core. It’s root system starts in the air and moves towards the ground creating an intricate woven root pattern in the process. Some of these you can actually climb inside of the tree! Inspired by the camaraderie of our group hike, a few of us extended the adventure together and travelled to the Nicoya Peninsula. We stayed in the low-key beach town of Sámara, where life slows down. We spent evenings unwinding at the Gusto Beach Club watching the sunset over the white sandy beach. The soft glow of strung lights and glowing ball globe lights on the tables created a magical ambiance. Bonfires often popped up along the shoreline, open for anyone to enjoy. As the day faded, we strolled along the beach with our toes skimming the gentle waves. Early in the morning as the sun rises, the fishermen prepare their boats to head out or cast lines from the shore. The waves in Sámara are gentle, making it an excellent spot to learn how to surf, to try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), or kayak. Horseback riding CONTINUED >

tours are available along the coast or in the surrounding countryside. While I spent my time soaking in the slow rhythm of the town and on the beach, other travelers I met recommended visits to the Werner Sauter Biological Reserve to see wildlife and learn about the tropical dry forest. Day trips to local waterfalls like Belén or kayak explorations through the mangrove forests are also popular options for those looking to explore more of the region’s natural beauty. Regardless of where you go, the natural beauty of Costa Rica’s diverse regions is unparalleled. Whether you’re drawn by the waves, the wildlife, or the warmth of the people, Costa Rica welcomes you to explore at your own pace—and maybe, just maybe, without a set itinerary.

A trip to Italy may conjure up rainbow laden hillsides, bright blue Mediterranean waters, plates of homemade pasta, but a trip to the Liguria region of Italy brings with it a fairytale landscape where 5 hillside ocean villages are connected by the ancient hiking path, The Blue Trail. Each village in Cinque Terre is delightfully unique, meaning you have 5 distinct destinations to visit all in one trip. My destination is an Airbnb nestled on the mountain near Vernazza owned by two brothers who operate an organic farm and farm stand. Right before I arrive a little red fox runs across the gravel road as if to affirm that I have in fact entered a fairytale. The Airbnb sits high atop the Mediterranean and has a view straight out of a storybook. A bistro table with two chairs is where I have my morning coffee as the sun comes up against the backdrop of the vast blue sea. One of the best parts of staying here, it is on The Blue Trail, the hiking path that connects all the villages. So I wake up and begin my trek to Vernazza and plan the rest of my days around the other villages.

“A trip to Italy may conjure up rainbow laden hillsides, bright blue Mediterranean waters, plates of homemade pasta, but a trip to the Liguria region of Italy brings with it a fairytale landscape where 5 hillside ocean THE FIVE VILLAGES OF CINQUE TERRE VERNAZZA

Featuring a natural harbor and narrow, winding streets, Vernazza is often considered the most picturesque of the five villages. The enclosed nature of the village certainly makes it feel all the more quaint and charming, plus there’s a small beach and piazza to dine and people watch. The narrow corridors that wind up and down the hills create beautiful nooks among the colorful buildings. Many shops and cafes line the main corridors of Vernazza. Imagine my surprise when I stumble upon a beautiful clothing boutique named Katrina, owned by a woman from Texas. Us Southerners enjoy talking and Katrina’s story is fascinating. She not only sells Mediterranean inspired clothing, she designs them. In Vernazza, you will also find a beautiful relic from Cinque Terre’s long past: the Church of St. Margaret of Antioch, dating all the way back to the 14th century. The village’s small harbor is ideal for swimming, the water is vibrant blue. You’ll find fresh seafood at the waterfront trattorias. This village is the best spot for a charming dinner by a piazza.

RIOMAGGIORE

As the southernmost village, Riomaggiore is characterized by its steep terraces and vibrant harbor. You can explore its historic Castello di Riomaggiore, a 13th-century castle offering unbeatable panoramic views of the Ligurian Sea. This village is known especially for its romantic ambiance, particularly during sunset when the pastel-colored houses glow in the fading light. Head down to the rocks by its tiny harbor, sit side by side with your aperitvo and watch as the houses glow in the gold evening light, the waves gently break against the harbor, and the sky turns violet. It’s perfect for capturing postcard-worthy photos or setting off on a scenic boat tour. CONTINUED >

MANAROLA

Manarola is one of the most photographed spots in the region, due to the perfect placement of the walkways to and from the village. It’s particularly famous for its wine production, specifically its sweet Sciacchetrà wine. It is also home to one of the best viewpoints in Cinque Terre, especially for the sunset. Take a stroll along the cliffside path to the Punta Bonfiglio viewpoint for breathtaking vistas, where you’ll find a lovely restaurant, Nessun Dorma, built in to the cliff. There aren’t many more beautiful places to have an aperitivo. CONTINUED >

CORNIGLIA

Uniquely situated atop a 100-meter-high promontory, Corniglia is the only village not directly adjacent to the sea. Accessible via a long staircase called Lardarina, it offers a tranquil atmosphere and stunning views of the coastline. Its secluded location means fewer crowds, making it the most peaceful and quiet village. Corniglia is also known for its charming, narrow alleyways and delightful local gelato, particularly flavors featuring locally grown honey, citrus, and even basil.

MONTEROSSO AL MARE

The largest of the five villages, Monterosso al Mare boasts a proper sandy beach for you to get your seaside fix, plus a charming old town bustling with shops, restaurants and gelaterias. Out of the five villages, this is the go-to destination for beach-lovers, complete with classic Italian umbrellas and sunbeds. It’s also known for its lemon groves, producing lemons famous around the world as well as delicious locally-made limoncino, a Ligurian variation of the Southern Italian drink and a must-try for visitors. A trip to Cinque Terre is a must, a bucket list destination that everyone should see. The beauty of this region is unlike anywhere else in the world, and to be able to trek five villages in one destination is quite the experience.

“Walking through its historic streets felt like stepping into a living museum, with wooden townhouses, hidden gardens, and centuriesold temples at every turn.” Travel has a way of connecting strangers in unexpected ways. When I signed up for a small, seven-person group trip to Japan with Traverse Journeys, I never imagined I’d meet two fellow Huntsville natives— Jennifer Lapidus and her daughter, Madison Doss—on the other side of the world. Before this trip, we didn’t know each other. By the time we returned home, we shared a bond forged through temples, matcha tea, and the intricate beauty of Japanese culture.

KYOTO: THE HEART OF TRADITION

Our journey began in Kyoto, the cultural soul of Japan. Walking through its historic streets felt like stepping into a living museum, with wooden townhouses, hidden gardens,

and centuries-old temples at every turn. Ashley Blake, the owner of Traverse Journeys, and I arrived a day early to catch up and give her time to prepare for the group’s arrival. One of our first group experiences was a traditional matcha experience in a 500year old tea house. Seated on tatami mats, we sipped cherry blossom and matcha tea while enjoying freshly made sakura mochi - not the ice cream kind but rather cherry blossom infused sticky rice wrapped in a cherry blossom leaf . With the help of our Japanese-native guide, Sumi, we met the 15th-generation matcha master and saw her rustic kitchen, where she prepared the tea and mochi over a traditional wood-burning fire. Jennifer, Madison, and I quickly discovered a shared appreciation for Japan’s balance of tranquility and vibrancy. Whether wandering through the vermillion torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine or admiring the gilded details of the UNESCO-listed Nijo-jo Castle, we were constantly in awe. Kyoto encouraged us to slow down and absorb the details—the way moss covered ancient stone lanterns, the scent of incense drifting from temple courtyards, the wind rustling through a bamboo grove. The serenity of Kyoto’s hidden, sacred spaces will stay with me forever. On our last morning in Kyoto, Ashley and I laced up our running shoes for an early jog, hoping to find a tucked-away shrine I’d seen online. Mist hung in the air, blurring the edges of the narrow streets, and we found ourselves weaving through quiet neighborhoods, a little unsure of our path. It wasn’t the picturesque Instagram moment I had envisioned, but it was something better—a genuine, unexpected adventure that felt like a throwback to the old days when we ran together in Austin. That misty, meandering run was a perfect farewell to a city that constantly invites exploration.

NARA: A DAY WITH DEER AND DIVINE STATUES

A short train ride brought us to Nara, home to the famous bowing deer of Nara Park—regal creatures that have learned to bow in exchange for rice crackers. Beyond the deer, Nara is home to Todai-ji, a Buddhist temple housing one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world. Standing before the 49-foot Daibutsu, one can’t help but feel a deep sense of reverence.

As we left, Madison reflected on the peace she felt there, drawn to Buddhist teachings. Jennifer captured hilarious photos of her daughter feeding the slightly overeager deer—one of whom may have given us a playful nip. Our little Huntsville trio was settling into the rhythm of Japan, finding comfort in the contrast between ancient tradition and lighthearted moments. That evening, we boarded an overnight ferry to Beppu, a less touristed city on the island of Kyushu. The small but pristine cabins and a buffet-style restaurant serving hearty Japanese meals made for a surprisingly restful night.

BEPPU: A LAND OF STEAM AND SPIRITS

Beppu breathes. Steam rises from its countless hot springs, curling through alleyways and hovering over rooftops like a scene from a Studio Ghibli film. We explored two of Beppu’s famed “hells”— hot springs too hot for bathing—before cooking lunch at Kannawa Onsen, where we steamed fresh vegetables, seafood, and eggs over natural geothermal vents. Lightly salted and mineral-infused, the meal was simple yet unforgettable. That evening, we opted for a “sunayu,” or sand bath, at Takegawara Onsen—an experience that had Madison giddy, as the bathhouse was said to have inspired Spirited Away. Buried in warm, mineral-rich sand, it felt like a mix of a steam room, a weighted blanket, and deep compression therapy—uniquely Japanese and deeply relaxing. One of the most touching moments came from “Grandma,” the wife of a farmer CONTINUED >

we visited on the Kunisaki Peninsula. She welcomed us with a homemade meal, then led us on a tour of her land, where we wandered through bamboo groves and admired blooming plum trees. Later, we visited a green tea farm, sipping tea while taking in breathtaking countryside views. That evening, we attended a private geisha performance—far from the refined, distant perception of geisha culture you’ll find in Kyoto’s touristy Gion corner. This one was intimate and playful, with dances telling stories of love and history and traditional games that had us all laughing.

A TEMPLE STAY AND OSAKA’S GRAND FAREWELL

Leaving Beppu, we visited Himeji Castle, nicknamed “White Heron Castle” for its pristine, wing-like walls. From there, we traveled to Mount Shigi for a Buddhist temple stay—tatami mat floors, shared baths, and a shojin ryori meal designed to nourish both body and spirit. A highlight for Jennifer and Madison was the sunrise fire ritual with the monks, a profound and grounding experience. Our final day as an official group took us to Osaka, where we explored Osaka Castle before gathering for an unforgettable farm-to-table farewell dinner featuring seasonal specialties like CONTINUED >

sea bream and spring flowers, Japanese wine (I didn’t even know Japan grew grapes!) and of course matcha worked into our dessert. The meal felt like a celebration—not just of the places we’d been but of the friendships formed along the way.

TOKYO: THE CITY OF CONTRASTS

Our trio, along with the rest of the group, chose an add-on trip to Tokyo, a city of exhilarating contrasts. Here, centuries-old shrines sit beside neon-lit skyscrapers. Vending machines dispense everything from hot coffee to yogurt parfaits, while quiet, cherry blossom-adorned gardens offer respite from the rush of Shibuya Crossing. Midway through our time in Tokyo, we took a day trip out of the city to see the iconic Mount Fuji. We were lucky to have a clear, sunny day—the kind of weather that offers a rare, unobstructed view of the revered mountain in all its majesty. Though Mt. Fuji is heavily over-touristed, the Traverse Journeys approach was different. Our adventure took us not just to viewpoints but also to an ancient shrine with 2,000 year old cedar trees followed by shinrin-yoku or forest bathing as we explored nearby lava caves. The outing was a serene escape before returning to the fast-paced energy of Tokyo.

One of my favorite parts of Tokyo? The ramen and udon. The Japanese approach ramen with deep reverence, with specialists dedicated to perfecting each component—broth, noodles, toppings. Many ramen shops have limited seating, encouraging diners to focus on the food, eat efficiently, and move on. That precision and respect for tradition felt like a perfect reflection of Japanese culture itself. It’s not every day that you find yourself halfway across the world, discovering new places alongside people who, until that moment, were strangers. Yet, thanks to this journey, I returned to Huntsville with new friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deeper appreciation for both Japan and the connections we make when we step outside our comfort zones.

SOAK IN THE DUNCAN FAMILY’S CURATED, ROMAN-STYLE OUTDOOR SPACE

ARTICLE BY CASEY CREQUE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOE DAVIS AND TRESA PEPPERS

The sun beaming down, the chirping of cicadas, the sweet sound of children playing and splashing in the pool... there’s something special about an Alabama summer that, although often sweltering, we long for throughout the rest of the year. Summer is a time for family and relaxation, and if you’re savvy, you may have created your own haven to have a place of your own to soak in the sun. Upon moving into their Huntsville home, Kaitlin Duncan knew she wanted to create a timeless space for her family and friends to enjoy, not only in summer, but in every season. We sat down with her to find out exactly how she brought her backyard oasis to fruition from concept to functional beauty.

WHAT WAS YOUR VISION WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED DESIGNING YOUR BACKYARD OASIS?

My first thought was to transform this backyard into my own personal escape. Having lived the last decade on a working farm with little to no privacy, I developed a constant urge to travel. That lack of seclusion pushed me to seek out dreamy villas and peaceful escapes. I wanted to bring this experience home and the columns supporting the pergola reminded me of Roman architecture and instantly sparked my vision for clean lines, marble-like textures, and a minimalist yet lavish aesthetic.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE ELEMENTS THAT BROUGHT YOUR VISION TO LIFE?

I began by embracing what was already part of the space. The pergola, with its stunning white columns, immediately set the tone and felt too iconic to change. The pool area, however, was overgrown and lacked purpose, so I cleared it to create a more open, functional layout for lounging and entertaining. I chose white and earthy tones, and I knew both bronze and teak would be perfect finishing touches, bringing a sense of modern sophistication that feels elevated, but timeless. CONTINUED >

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE DURING THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between form and function. I wanted the space to feel luxurious, but it also needed to be practical and livable day to day. Clearing the overgrown vegetation was a major undertaking, and Alabama’s unpredictable weather made timing everything a constant challenge. It took a lot of determination and creative problem-solving, but I stayed focused on the vision and made thoughtful decisions one step at a time. That mindset kept the process moving forward, even when things got tough.

WHICH FEATURES DO YOUR FAMILY AND GUESTS ENJOY THE MOST WHEN SPENDING TIME IN YOUR BACKYARD?

The sense of peace is what everyone seems to love most. After leaving the farm, I worried that I’d lose my connection to nature, but the opposite happened. The backyard feels incredibly tranquil, almost like stepping into a private retreat. Sharing meals under the pergola, lounging by the pool, or simply soaking in the stillness makes the space feel like an escape. It’s become a favorite gathering spot for family and friends where we can relax, connect, and truly unwind.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THE BEAUTY AND FUNCTIONALITY OF YOUR SPACE THROUGHOUT THE ALABAMA SEASONS?

It’s definitely a labor of love. Being surrounded by trees means every season brings its own mess like fall leaves, spring pollen, and twigs from rainy storms. It requires regular maintenance, but it’s absolutely worth it to keep the space looking and feeling beautiful all year round.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MOMENTS OR MEMORIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN YOUR BACKYARD?

Hosting my best friend Hollie’s birthday was truly unforgettable. It was one of those perfect nights. An incredible group of women, warm laughter, and Hollie’s only request: that we all get in the water. And we did! We floated, laughed, and soaked in the night under a blanket of stars.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE DREAMING OF TURNING THEIR OWN BACKYARD INTO A PERSONAL PARADISE?

Do it before you move in ;) Seriously...start with a clear vision, embrace what you already have, and don’t be afraid to make bold choices that reflect you. A backyard oasis is more than a design—it’s a lifestyle. CONTINUED >

M UST SE E | L I FE + C ULTU RE

Guntersville, Alabama is a small peninsula town where scenic beauty and charming adventures await, and I have the fortunate pleasure of calling it my home. Guntersville is just thirty-seven miles from Huntsville, a short trip that our family makes daily, along with many Huntsvillians. If you have not spent much time in Guntersville, it’s time to join in on one of the best kept secrets in our state. Come along for a day-trip filled with natural beauty, history and leisure activities that promise a memorable day trip for visitors of all ages. As you drive on Hwy 431 from Huntsville to Guntersville, you can catch glimpses of the sparkling waters before you cross the River Bridge to our quaint downtown. You may want to grab a coffee at Moody Brews Coffee & Lounge before heading up to Lake Guntersville State Park, where sunrise is a spectacular way to start your day! Spanning 6,000 acres, the Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. A leisurely hike on one of the trails, such as the Tom Bevill Trail, promises a tranquil atmosphere, where the early morning light filters through towering trees. Don’t miss the chance to spot some of the local wildlife; the area is renowned for its bald eagle sightings, especially during the cooler months. CONTINUED >

After working up an appetite, head to one of Guntersville’s cozy brunch spots like The Rock House Eatery or Homecoming Cafe. Both options offer charming ambiance and delicious food that will fuel you up for your day’s adventures. With your energy replenished, it’s time to explore Guntersville’s rich history and culture. The Guntersville Museum, set in a historic rock Armory, offers fascinating insights into the area’s past. Exhibits range from Native American artifacts to detailed accounts of the town’s development throughout the years. Next, immerse yourself in the downtown scene while strolling the flower-lined streets filled with quaint, locally owned shops and boutiques. Downtown offers something for everyone with several stores for women, men and children; gift shops, antiques and interiors, specialty food and wine and art. The ladies will definitely want to check out Blossom Boutique for boutique clothing and Generations for shoes. Bubbas for the menfolk. Corbitt & Co. and Venture Out have something for everyone and Ana Banana is an adorable baby boutique.. We have several interior shops including Victoria’s, owned by a Huntsville native. Bakers on Main, Stach & Co. and Pure & Simple offer something for everyone and all occasions! Downtown is captivating, reflecting the vibrant community spirit of Guntersville. If you are lucky, you may catch a local musician performing at Errol Allen Park.

For lunch, stop in one of the restaurants downtown like Cafe 336 or Pizza Ed. You can also walk a few blocks to the City Harbor and dine al fresco at La Esquina or Nash’s. All items served with a side of stunning views! In the afternoon, take to the waters for a different perspective of Guntersville’s beauty. Rent a pontoon from All Seasons Boat Rental or Islands Boat Rental who also rents kayaks and offers guided tours. What an adventurous way to enjoy the natural surroundings! Alternatively, visit the Guntersville Dam or Sunset Park for a leisurely walk and picnic. Both offer spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. You can grab to go food items for your outdoor charcuterie from Stach & Co., Pure & Simple or Bakers on Main. As the day winds down, cap it off with dinner at one of the downtown restaurants. The Old Town Stock House combines local flavors with modern culinary techniques, offering a dining experience that is both authentic and innovative. Finally, no visit to Guntersville would be complete without watching sunset over the lake. Find a cozy spot along the shoreline, aboard a sunset cruise, on a kayak to the Hambrick Bat Cave or with a sundowner at Levi’s On the Lake to witness the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors, reflecting over the water.

Rock City boasts stunning views of the scenic landscape with a swing-a-long bridge offering a sense of excitement and adventure as you navigate pathways in the foothills of the Appalacians. Enjoy lunch at Big Rock Grill before heading over to Ruby Falls where you’ll take a glass-front elevator 260 feet down into the cave that holds the tallest waterfall in the United States available for public viewing. If you care to extend your trip, head down into the city for a leisurely stroll along the river walk or a visit to the Tennessee Aquarium, and end the night with dinner at Feed Co. Table and Tavern. @visitchatt

Birmingham

6th Street Baptist Church

As a hub for civil rights and the industrial revolution, “The Magic City” is home to sobering historical sites that will leave you feeling grateful for how far Alabama has come. Start your day with a tour of the Civil Rights Institute to catch a first-hand glimpse of what segregation looked like in the 1950’s and see a replica of the famous Freedom Riders busses that were key to driving us to equality. Here you’ll also get to see the actual jail cell door that Dr. Martin Luther King sat behind as he wrote his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Don’t skip out on visiting the 16th Street Baptist Church where tragedy lead to the initializing of Civil Rights legislation by the federal government in 1963. End your day by experiencing one of Birmingham’s many award-winning restaurants. Chefs like Frank Stitt, Adam Evans, Chris Hastings, Rob McDaniel and others have put the Magic City on the map as one of the country’s top foodie destinations. @inbirmingham CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Florence

W.C Handy Home and Museum photo credit Michaela Shumacher

Travel west to the shoals for a vibrant historical experience and a culinary treat. Home to FAME Recording Studios, the W.C. Handy Museum, Helen Keller’s birthplace, and the only Frank Lloyd-Wright designed home in Alabama, there is no shortage of interesting sites to see in Florence and Muscle Shoals. Depending on your interests, we recommend choosing one or two tours to attend and stop in downtown Florence for shopping and ice cream at Alabama’s oldest ice cream shop, Trowbridge’s. Finish the day with dinner at Odette, or make it a weekend trip by booking a reservation at the Rennasiance Resort & Spa, where you can dine at the prestigious 360 Grille for circulating views of the Shoals and beyond. @florence_alabama

Dismals Canyon Nature lovers will be enamored with Dismals Canyon in Phil Campbell, Alabama. Take a hike through the winding natural trails of the west Alabama woods and be prepared to stumble upon streams and waterfalls, providing a perfect opportunity to cool off in the summer heat. As beautiful as the sunken forrest is during the day, the real magic happens after sunset as tiny bioluminescent “glow worms” light up the canyon. This trip is an exciting outdoor adventure and science lesson all in one! @dismalscanyon
