New Year, New Home for Honey and Nova! When our real estate team began selling homes, we had no idea we’d one day be helping our four-legged clients find new homes, too. But when Honey and Nova’s mom urgently sold her home, we stepped in to help in every way we could. These girls are truly the sweetest, and now they’re looking for the families they deserve.

Honey

A petite lab mix with golden-brown eyes that can melt anyone’s heart. At just 35 lbs, she’s tiny — and though you’d never guess it, she’s a graceful 11 years old. Honey is exactly what her name promises: gentle, sweet, and the perfect calm companion. She’s dreaming of a soft couch, a cozy home, and someone to spoil her in her golden years. Let’s make her “couch princess” era happen!

These lovely girls are being generously housed by Penny Webster with VIP Pet Grooming in South Huntsville. To schedule a meet-and-greet, simply text Kelsey Zwack at 256-656-6098. P.S. Though they’re sisters, they do not have to be adopted together — but two really are twice the fun! A huge thank-you to April McSaveny with April Stanley Photography for capturing their precious photos.

Nova

Just under 2 years old, this pure-bred potato is equal parts loving, wiggly, and devoted. Her whole body wiggles when her tail wags, and she’ll decide you’re her best friend within seconds. Great with children and other dogs, Nova is as gentle as she is playful. She’s already been rescued once by Huntsville Animal Services and does not deserve to be homeless a second time. Let’s find her a forever home quickly so she can spend her days making memories with her family.

New Year, New Home! WHETHER YOU’RE SELLING OR STAYING, THESE ARE MY MUST-DO REFRESH TIPS FOR EVERY HOME. The holidays are over, the decorations are packed away, and most of us are craving simplicity, lighter spaces, and a true fresh start. Whether you’re preparing to list your home or just want to fall back in love with the one you’re in, these are the Top 10 Refresh Steps I recommend to every seller — and often, they love the results so much they decide not to sell at all! 1. PRESSURE WASH Clean walkways and siding instantly boost curb appeal and make your home look fresh and well cared for.

6. CLEAR PATHWAYS & WINDOWS Remove furniture that crowds walkways or blocks natural light. Open space feels bigger and brighter.

2. WASH THE WINDOWS Use a garden-hose window spray for quick, inexpensive shine. More light = happier, brighter spaces.

7. UPDATE KEY LIGHT FIXTURES Swap a few high-impact fixtures—entryway, vanity, kitchen pendants, dining chandelier—for an instant style upgrade.

3. DONATE Let go of items you’ve outgrown. A home filled only with what serves you now feels amazing. 4. TRASH THE REST Everyone hoards junk. Grab a bag and toss anything unusable, unwanted, or taking up mental space. 5. PAINT Fresh paint is transformative. Warm whites and creams open up a room, and even a single accent wall delivers huge impact. NEED HELP? YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I have the most amazing subcontractors in every one of these categories. If you’d like my preferred vendor list, call or text me anytime. And if you’re preparing to sell, my team coordinates and handles all of this for you in the weeks before listing. We’d love to help you start your new year in a new home — or fall back in love with the one you already have.

8. FIX WHAT’S BROKEN Handle the small stuff: rusty vents, chipped plates, loose handles, worn fences. Buyers notice everything. 9. DEEP CLEAN A professional top-to-bottom clean makes your home feel new and photographs beautifully. 10. LANDSCAPE Winter is ideal for yard cleanup. Pull what’s dead, trim what’s alive, and refresh mulch with a classic dark brown.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

New Year: Mind Over Matter "Tomorrow something wonderful is going to happen to me." "Today something wonderful is going to happen to me." These are affirmations that athlete Serena Williams tells herself every night before she goes to bed and every morning when she wakes up. Experts agree that they best way to retrain your brain is to focus on positive experiences. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change and strengthen pathways through repetition. Positive experiences, thoughts, and behaviors reinforce neural connection, while negative ones also create pathways which can lead to a 'negative bias'. All the negative self talk we have engaged in or others have said to us have built pathways throughout our life. By actively engaging in positive habits and affirmations we can consciously build new pathways. Celeste Bradley is a brave young woman who lost both her hands and her feet. The devastation and sadness she has felt over this past year is unimaginable. In the depths of great loss, she knew she had to change her attitude. To manage the mental hurdles, she builds structure into her days: prayer, meditation, staying busy, being intentional about redirecting negative thoughts. Her dad’s words echo in her mind: “An idle mind is the devil’s playground.” Celeste says, “Now I know it’s a mindset. It’s choosing to keep going, even when it feels like you can't.” In this issue you will find Celeste's inspiring story as well as mental health articles EMDR Healing by writer Martha Lynn Coon and Becoming More Yourself by therapist Stephanie Cashin. You will also find articles on morning routines, self care, getting in gear for the new year, and beauty must haves. Your mind will travel away from Huntsville in Manifesting Mallorca and back to the Rocket City with travel writers HoneyTrek in Trekking Through Huntsville. It's a new year and we invite you to breathe in the positive and breathe out the negative. Every issue our goal is to uplift this community and we are grateful to be a big, healthy dose of positivity in your life. Long. Live. Print.

EMDR Healing ARTICLE BY

MARTHA LYNN COON

The Role of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in Mental Health When the New Year arrives at our doorstep, it often brings a rush of intention and energy along with it. But for many people, this wave of good intention sometimes peters out quickly. By February, we wonder what happened to all those good intentions, and whether the Chinese New Year (celebrated February 1st) might be our second chance to get out of the gate. When Spring Break hits, and there’s still little progress to show, a tendency to throw up one’s hands and let habits hang out for just one more year can quickly settle in. But what if change weren’t all about sheer willpower? What if there was a way to work with our brain, to speed healing and transformation, and remove obstacles to growth? This is one of the many possibilities of EMDR therapy. EMDR, an abbreviation for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a well-researched and road-tested approach to helping individuals process past hurt and trauma with the assistance of a trained therapist and their own neural connections. In short, EMDR is a practice of guided re-framing and re-programming of challenging or traumatic memories from our past, the traces of which still inform not only how we feel, but at times, how we behave or react to particular stimuli. EMDR therapy proceeds through eight distinct phases, which include (among others) history taking, preparation, reprocessing, and re-sensitization. The eight phases do not always equate to eight sessions;

depending on the complexity of the issue and the client’s needs, the phases can be addressed in less or more than eight sessions. It always involves bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds, to help the client’s brain reprocess memories that it brings up intentionally or through association. If this sounds intriguing or helpful, you are in luck. A quick search via Psychology Today’s website indicates that there are over 100 practitioners available to Huntsvillians either in person or online that have training in EMDR therapy. One local practitioner, Stephanie Cashin of Huntsville Integrative Therapy, uses EMDR as a powerful and effective tool to help clients move through their healing process as efficiently and comfortably as possible. Cashin stresses that her model of successful practice is not retaining clients indefinitely but finding the most effective practices to empower clients toward more joy, freedom, and autonomy in their healing journey. If you are considering the use of EMDR as a therapeutic practice, Cashin suggests inquiring about a mental health provider’s training with EMDR while discerning how and with whom you’d like to engage. Practitioners can use an EMDR-informed approach, which might use some aspects of the EMDR method but present a more informal or hybrid approach in practice. Other practitioners are trained in aspects of EMDR but have not gone through a certification process. And some professionals are CONTINUED >

“I remember it as though it was a real memory, but it was more distant. certified in EMDR by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), a professional body that offers connectivity, education and certification through training to mental health providers around the world. Cashin also points out that as Huntsville expands, people who look to improve or fine tune their emotional health might consider approaching therapy providers in a similar fashion to medical providers when it comes to specialization. As the city grows, it’s becoming possible for a therapist to refer a client out to another practitioner who is certified or specialized in a modality that could benefit the client while working on a particular issue. Similar to the relationship between a General Practitioner and a Specialist, a client might return to their therapeutic home base once that specific course of treatment draws to a close. EMDR is just one of the many healing modalities available through the devoted and informed care available in the Tennessee Valley. Cashin is certified through EMDRIA and began offering EMDR to her clients about four years ago. Since then, she’s watched clients utilize EMDR to aid in the re-processing and healing of trauma in multiple forms, from critical incidents to negative and detrimental feedback loops at play in a client’s conscious or subconscious over years and decades. While EMDR might be most recognized as a treatment to help those struggling with PTSD, a certified EMDR therapist has access to specific protocols used to support the treatment of challenges ranging from specific phobias- Cashin says fear of flying is a referral she sees often- to addiction, OCD, eating disorders, severe stress, and anxiety. Kelli, a local writer and mother of two teenagers, sought out an EMDR therapist in the area to work on a particular and persistent issue that had not been resolved after years in traditional “talk” therapy. Kelli described her desire to get past what felt like a “block” when it came to her relationship with food, which in turn affected her experience of connection, or a lack thereof, to her own body. She hoped working

with an EMDR trained therapist could improve her emotional connection to food and eating, and support steps toward better long-term outcomes in her own wellness journey. She describes the first few EMDR sessions as “tough,” requiring her to re-visit some difficult memories of the past as she made the first series of associative memories to begin her healing journey. After these challenging first steps, Kelli described immersing herself in the process, allowing the associative memories to present as needed and working with her therapist to stay with the memory and re-program as needed. After the initial memories were integrated, she commented that it felt like a block was removed, and the rest of the process moved forward “like a waterfall.” Kelli’s experience of EMDR allowed her to release old memories and well-worn patterns in order to grow and respond differently in her relationship to triggers, obstacles, and frustrations that previously short-circuited her wellness goals. for an EMDR trained therapist when navigating challenging emotions and triggers around family relationships and transitions. Her practitioner focused heavily on the bilateral stimulation of the brain through auditory processing, in which stimulation occurs through a clicking mechanism delivered through ear buds. The Huntsvillebased therapist she worked with introduced tactile stimulation as well, administered through the palms of the hands using little devices known as tappers or pulsators. These devices vibrate or pulse in an alternating left-right pattern, stimulating both sides of the brain and inviting the person holding them to slip into a state of almost wakeful dreaming that mimics the REM phase of sleep. Laurie’s experience, similar to Kelli’s, was extremely positive. Both women pointed to a sense of empowerment through the process; the therapist’s use of EMDR taught each woman how to access past hurt or trauma and re-process these experiences from the standpoint of their competent, adult self. Laurie commented that with EMDR, you begin to understand how to allow your higher self to help heal trauma or challenges in the past, both with the therapist and beyond. Bessel van der Kolk, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and well-known author,

34

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

refers to this specific aspect among EMDR recipients in his book The Body Keeps the Score: One man reported: “I remember it as though it was a real memory, but it was more distant. Typically, I drowned in it, but this time I was floating on top. I had the feeling that I was in control.” A woman told us: “Before, I felt each and every step of it. Now it is like a whole, instead of fragments, so it is more manageable.” The trauma had lost its immediacy and become a story about something that happened a long time ago. As we ease into a New Year, it’s a wonderful time to take inventory of the tools and support available to achieve our goals and speed our own healing and wellness. EMDR is one of the treatments sanctioned by the Department of Veteran Affairs for PTSD, and many practitioners are integrating the use of EMDR into their practice to support the healing and integration of past hurt while also helping to minimize reaction to current triggers in the process. If you think you or someone you love could benefit from EMDR, reach out to one of the many available practitioners in the Tennessee Valley, some of whom offer services both in-person and on-line, to learn more and expedite bringing your best, most whole self forward this new year.

MATTER “I WAS DEVASTATED BUT DETERMINED TO GET BACK TO THE LIFE THAT I WAS LIVING BEFORE I GOT SICK. I’VE CONTINUED TO BE HOPEFUL, EVEN ON THE HARD DAYS, THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO DO ALL OF THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO DO, INCLUDING LIVING INDEPENDENTLY AGAIN.”

Imagine waking up from a routine surgery to find out your health took a major turn for the worse. This was the reality for 24 year old Celeste Bradley when she was rushed back to the hospital shortly after a deviated septum surgery only to be diagnosed with sepsis. Celeste fought for her life, and the cost was the unthinkable. She had her whole life ahead of her but would now have to face a reality with no hands or feet. CONTINUED >

“I found out about my hands and feet about a month apart,” Celeste recalls. “The hands came first. At the time I knew it was necessary because I couldn’t move my fingers. They were extremely cold,” she continues. The memories of the nurses bringing heating pads to put on her hands are engrained in her mind, but more so the fact that nothing could touch the cold sensation. “I knew it was necessary. I was almost relieved,” says Celeste. After surgery, she even managed to joke with her brother about potential Halloween costumes. Despite the enormity of what she was facing, she found a way to laugh. The news about her feet was different. She had been reassured over and over that they could likely be revascularized, and she held onto that hope tightly. A woman of deep faith, she prayed relentlessly, leaned on her pastor’s visits, and believed wholeheartedly in the possibility of a miracle. “I’ve seen God work in the lives of my family and community,” she says. “I truly believed He could save my feet.” In the end, the miracle looked different than she had imagined. Her feet were not healing. Keeping them meant risking her life, and choosing survival meant losing all four limbs. “Living without hands was one thing,” she admits. “But living without all of my limbs felt like a nightmare. In the beginning, I couldn’t see how I could ever be independent or happy again.” But even in that moment, one of the darkest of her life, she made a decision that would shape her healing. “I knew my attitude had to change,” she says. “I was devastated but determined to get back to the life that I was living before I got sick. I’ve continued to be hopeful, even on the hard days, that I will be able to do all of the things that I want to do, including living independently again.” she explains. The road from the hospital bed to rebuilding her daily life has been anything but linear. “Slow,” she says with a laugh. “Very, very slow. And I’m not a patient person.” Insurance approvals, outside funding, fabrication of prosthetics, learning to use her body in new ways...each step required weeks or months of waiting. But the journey also opened her eyes to an entirely new world.

“I’VE SEEN GOD WORK IN THE LIVES OF MY FAMILY AND COMMUNITY.”

“Before this, I didn’t know anything about prosthetics,” she says. “Now I’m amazed. It’s incredible what these devices can do.” She uses her prosthetic legs every day, while her upper-limb devices are still in development. As she waits, she leans on others for help, which has been a humbling, vulnerable experience that has taught her that strength isn’t only physical. “Strength is asking for help,” says Celeste. “It’s grieving and still celebrating what you’ve gained. It’s moving forward even on the days that feel impossible.” CONTINUED >

Celeste is honest about the emotional toll this has taken. “It’s impossible to avoid sadness,” she says. “Every day, I remember how easy life used to be.” To manage the mental hurdles, she builds structure into her days: prayer, meditation, staying busy, being intentional about redirecting negative thoughts. Her dad’s words echo in her mind: “An idle mind is the devil’s playground.” Her favorite distraction and source of joy is her dog, Duke. She smiles, “Playing with him, training him, just being around him… it brings me so much happiness.” She also works closely with mental-health professionals, reminding herself that trauma changes the brain and that needing help is not weakness. “There is absolutely no shame in getting help,” she says. “We aren’t meant to do this alone.” Small victories have become major milestones. Walking again. Laughing again. And even picking up new hobbies, like pickleball. Her brother had played for years, and she always intended to join him but could never fit it into her packed schedule. “I regret not playing with him before I got sick,” she says. “But now I’ve played several times, and it feels incredible. I was once worried I’d never walk again. Playing a sport feels like a gift.” She’s also slowly returning to her favorite pre-illness passion: baking. Adaptive equipment has helped, but it’s still a work in progress. “I’m not fully

independent with it yet,” she says. “But one day I will be. I believe that.” If there’s one thing Celeste is adamant about, it’s that she hasn’t walked this road alone. Her support system has wrapped around her from the moment she fell ill: family, friends, coworkers, church members, hospital staff, therapists, parents of her former patients, and countless people from the community. “I am incredibly blessed,” she says. “Not everyone has what I have. My support system has carried me.” At twenty-four years old, this is not the life that Celeste saw herself living, but after what she’s been through, she remains grateful for another chance at life and the lessons she is learning from her new normal. This has been a process of waiting, and healing, and learning. But since her illness, she has discovered a strength she never knew she had. “I used to think strength was physical,” she says. “Now I know it’s a mindset. It’s choosing to keep going, even when it feels like you can’t.” The greatest lesson she wants to share with anyone facing unimaginable hardship? “Don’t compare your progress to anyone else’s. Everyone’s journey is different. The only comparison that matters is whether you’re doing better than you were yesterday, and whether you’re doing your best. That’s what counts.” @celestescourage CONTINUED >

THIS SPANISH ISLAND BOASTS OVER 300 DAYS OF SUNSHINE, WELCOMING VISITORS WITH BRIGHT BLUE SKIES, WARM AIR AND OCEAN BREEZES

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BAILEY

MANIFESTING

MALLORCA Birthed between heaven and sea, Mallorca sits off the coast of Spain in the azure waters of the Mediterranean. Trees of cedar, aloe, orange, lemon, fig and pomegranate line the landscape as emerald mountains meet the historic pastel lined streets of Palma. Mallorca boasts over 300 days of sunshine, welcoming visitors with bright blue skies, warm air and ocean breezes. CONTINUED >

Mallorca was first inhabited in 6000BC, this Mediterranean island has been shaped by prehistoric settlers, Roman conquerors, Moorish farmers, Catalan kings, pirates, missionaries and modern tourism pioneers. Every era has left its mark, creating an island where history is never far from view — whether in the ancient stones of Alcúdia, the Gothic spires of Palma, or the traditions still alive in its villages. “The nature, the trees, the sky, the sea, the monuments surpass all my dreams: this is the promised land!”- From George Sand’s letter to Carlotta Marliani Our Mallorquin journey began at the Cap Rocat resort. A quick flight from bustling Barcelona and you find yourself on the natural shores of Mallorca where the art of doing nothing reigns. Once designed as a fortress, Cap Rocat was never used for this purpose and now stands as an architectural beauty carved in sandstone. The resort seamlessly blends into the landscape of Protected Natural Area where the biodiversity of its Posidonia meadows meet the Mediterranean. CONTINUED >

White drapes blowing in the wind drape the buildings. Each suite is a secluded haven equipped with large seating areas, marble tiled bathrooms with soaking tubs, and a terrace outdoor area with an area for eating, sunbathing, and a large outdoor bed overlooking the sea perfect for enjoying the ocean breeze or at night stargazing. We were there during the peak of the Alpha Capricornids and the Southern Delta Aquarids, witnessing 12 meteors stream across the sky one night. The Cap Rocat Beach Club sits above the Mediterranean with full service for drinks and fresh food as you lounge. A dip in the sea is a must. The clear, blue, buoyant waters of the Mediterranean beckon you in. Dive in or take the ladder and enjoy the salt of the sea. After a day spent savoring Mother Nature make plans to dine at the Sea Club. This was by far our favorite meal. Positioned overlooking Calo de la Reina (aka The Queen’s Cove), The Sea Club is the perfect place to watch sunset, dine on freshly caught fish, and sip a craft cocktail or mocktail as the sun dips below the horizon. Every dish we had was remarkable, yet simple. Breakfast can be enjoyed until noon every day in the main dining area or in your suite. Fresh juices, eggs prepared as you like, an array of meat options, and a smorgasbord of freshly baked pastries are all on the menu. During summer, Cap Rocat hosts a temporary pop-up restaurant in collaboration with Michelin-starred Saddle Madrid. Five to seven courses featuring regional fare plus a cheese course. Guests also can partake in the art of butter shaving to accompany the bread course. Perhaps the crown jewel of the resort, if one had to pick, is the spa. Carved into stone like a cave, you will find one of the most stunning views on the property, the indoor pool with an art sculpture hanging above. Try the floating massage for a uniquely therapeutic experience. The spa lounge area is even a work of art, designed as if for Moorish royalty with canopy beds lining both sides of the room.

Just a short drive from the resort is the most notable village on the island, Palma de Mallorca. Nearly half of Mallorca’s permanent population resides in the island’s capital, making it a vibrant and lively place. The impressive La Seu cathedral in Palma is one of Mallorca’s most significant heritage sites. It is a huge cathedral built on the site of a former mosque. The building of the cathedral began in 1230 and continued for 400 years. The cathedral has continued to have additional work undertaken with the renowned architect Antoni Gaudi adding to it more recently. Find a cafe and enjoy Huevos Rotos, or ‘broken eggs‘, consisting of lightly fried eggs over fried potatoes, often with chorizo or ham, which Mallorcans eat anytime of day. Other popular regional dishes include Ensaimada, a sweet spiral pastry; Tumbet, a vegetable dish with fried eggplant, peppers, and potatoes; Frito Mallorquín, a stir-fried dish with meat or fish and vegetables; and Pa amb oli, a simple dish of bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil.

Some restaurants you must try: La Boveda, a beautiful small tapas bar, which offers very cozy dining and and where the Padron has been frying pimientos ever since he was a little boy; Botanic for its ambiance, beautiful interior design, and the pleasure of plant forward food; La Cana for tapas; Sa Llotja in Porto Colom for modern Mallorquin food; S’Arenal in Porto Colom, where you can have white wine and seafood, while sitting in the shade, looking at the ocean and having your feet in the sand. Wander the streets of Palma and among the art galleries and shops you will find narrow corridors leading to lively courtyards where people are gathered eating from different cafes and listening to live music. We also discovered that Uber drivers are very accommodating in Mallorca - after catching a ride we wanted ice cream, our driver was nice enough to take us to the best ice cream place in town and wait while we ordered. Artists and writers have long been attracted to the dramatic and picturesque west coast of the island. Robert Graves, known as one of England’s greatest poets, was one of the first English to move to the island. He resided (& was buried) in the pretty mountain village of Deia, which has since become a hub for the creative crowd and celebrities. One of the most charming villages is Valldemossa, a mountain village known for its historic Carthusian Monastery where composer Chopin and author George Sand stayed. Mallorca’s stunning Serra de Tramuntana mountain range was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO for being an area of great Physical and Cultural significance. Its highest peak is the Puig Major (1445 metres & is the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands). The most famous and longest hiking trail, stretching across the Serra de Tramuntana mountains is Dry Stone (GR221). Other hikes include the Path of the Archduke, scenic and

highly-rated trail with dramatic views; Barranc de Biniaraix, a picturesque and popular hike, also a segment of the GR221; Puig de Galatzó, a classic hike up one of Mallorca’s southern peaks; and Castell d’Alaró, a hike to a historic castle perched on a mountain. CONTINUED >

This underground world is filled with an array of giant stalactites, stalagmites and shimmering underground lakes. The route is approximately 1,200 meters long and takes about an hour to traverse. It’s a tourist attraction rather than a wilderness hike, but it’s still a stunning underground experience. Another beautiful cave hike is Cova des Coloms, a popular

BECOMING MORE YOURSELF Psychologists have studied New Year’s resolutions, and the results are… mixed. Some research shows most resolutions fade within weeks, while newer studies suggest success rises dramatically when goals align with identity and realistic capacity. But here’s the deeper truth: Resolutions don’t fail because people aren’t motivated. They fail because they look good on paper but don’t line up with who we are, how we operate, or what our nervous system can realistically hold. The resolutions that last aren’t the ones that make you more. They’re the ones that make you more yourself. Because meaningful change flows from identity, capacity, and authenticity.

IDENTITY-BASED GOALS OUTPERFORM OUTCOME GOALS James Clear explains that transformation happens on three layers: Outcomes- what you get, Processes- what you do, and Identitywhat you believe about yourself. Most resolutions sit in the outermost layer, ‘lose weight, wake up earlier, get organized’. These sound productive, but they’re built on outcomes, not identity. Identity-based change works differently. Instead of asking, “What do I want to achieve?” you ask, “Who am I becoming?” Instead of “I want to exercise,” it becomes, “I’m someone who moves my body.” Instead of “I need more discipline,” it becomes, “I’m a person who keeps promises to myself.” Behavior follows your beliefs about yourself. When identity shifts, habits follow naturally. Even transformational leaps like the ones we admire in history are rooted in identity. When Michelangelo set out to create the statue of David, he wasn’t just refining a skill set; he was reshaping his commitment, convictions, and identity to meet the level of excellence he envisioned. Transformation at that level requires becoming a different kind of person, not just doing different things. This is why identity-based goals feel different in your body. They’re not about performing; they’re about aligning. Identity-driven goals create lives that feel good from the inside out. CONTINUED >

UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH IS A MYTH A few Januarys ago, a client sat in my office holding a color-coded habit trackerTwelve habits. Seven routines. Five rituals. “If I can just stick to this,” she said, “I’ll finally feel like myself again.” She had crafted the perfect “new me”: • Gym five days a week • Journaling • Meditation • Meal prep • Hydration, vitamins, dry brushing…the whole internet But as she talked, her shoulders tightened. Her voice thinned. Her eyes held that unmistakable cocktail of hope and dread. “What’s your plan for rest?” I asked. She laughed, “Rest? There’s no time for that…” Three weeks later, the spreadsheet was abandoned not because she lacked discipline, but because she built resolutions for a woman with infinite bandwidth… a woman who didn’t exist. She wasn’t failing. She was ignoring her nervous system capacity. Rigidity is the near enemy of discipline… and my client was trying to out-discipline her own exhaustion. CONTINUED >

She was trying to move toward her goals from a place of emotional pressure instead of emotional reality. And when we ignore our internal reality, our nervous system eventually forces us to pay attention. In psychology, there’s a concept called psychological flexibility, which is the ability to move toward chosen goals even when emotions are hard or circumstances aren’t ideal. It’s not about suppressing discomfort; it’s about acknowledging your feelings without letting them control you. And a core part of psychological flexibility is seeing yourself as a context, not content. In other words: You’re not your emotions. You’re not your overwhelm. You are the space that holds those emotions and as the space expands, the content changes. But you can’t expand that space when you’re emotionally flooded, exhausted, or carrying a chronic stress load. That’s why pushing through January with an idyllic, hyper-optimized plan collapses so quickly. You can’t build a ‘more’ life on a nervous system running in survival mode. Capacity is not a character flaw. It’s physiology. CONTINUED >

“You can paint every wall in the house, but if you don’t replace these single pane windows the inside will never feel the way you want it to.”

MOST PEOPLE CHASE “BETTER” INSTEAD OF “TRUER” In March of 2020, I bought my first home and instantly made it my “COVID project.” Goodbye popcorn ceilings, hello fresh paint and new hardware. I was convinced that one more cosmetic improvement would finally make it feel right. But no matter how much I painted and styled, the house never held temperature. The rooms were drafty, the energy bills were ridiculous, and everything looked “updated” but never truly felt comfortable. Eventually, a contractor explained the obvious: “You can paint every wall in the house, but if you don’t replace these single pane windows the inside will never feel the way you want it to.” It wasn’t the throw pillows or accent walls that mattered. It was the structure holding everything together. Most people approach January with paintbrush energy: New planners. New productivity tools. New pressures. Surface upgrades that photograph well but don’t hold up in real life. But if your foundation, your nervous system, your stress load, your hormones, your identity is strained, no cosmetic upgrade will matter. Because true change isn’t about what you add. It’s about what you remove. Just like my house didn’t need more décor..it needed the old windows gone-real transformation

64

happens by clearing away what doesn’t belong. That’s exactly what Michelangelo meant when he said: “I removed everything that wasn’t David.” That’s what sustainable change truly is. Not adding more. Not stacking habits like a Jenga tower. Not becoming a shinier, more optimized version of yourself. But stripping away everything that isn’t you. Better is performative. Truer is sustainable. A life that only looks good will never last. YOUR JANUARY INVITATION January whispers seductively, “Become better.” But what if you stopped trying to become better…and started becoming truer? What if your resolutions honored your identity instead of your insecurities? What if they matched your capacity instead of your fantasy bandwidth? What if they worked with your nervous system instead of against it? This year, choose goals that feel like home. Choose habits you can hold even on your hardest days. Choose changes that come from alignment, not pressure. Because the life you want is created from truth. And the truest version of you? She’s more than enough to build a year you’ll be proud of.

GIVING HOPE TO VETERAN LEGACIES ARTICLE BY ERIN COGGINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS BATTE

Those entering the doors of Hope Church on the first Tuesday of every month can hear the harmonious camaraderie spilling from the church’s recreation room. The chatter, mixed with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and sweet treats, comes from the gathering of veterans from around North Alabama. Honoring Veteran Legacies, a local nonprofit, serves elderly veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War or during the Cold War era. The organization, founded in 2015, offers support through social events, outreach initiatives, and recognition programs. Their mission is to honor our senior veterans in their communities and beyond, and to guard and preserve their legacies for future generations.

The Miller Brothers all fought in Vietnam.

The organization is rooted in family. Founders Chris Batté and Elaine Oakes became involved with another nonprofit in Tennessee through Elaine’s grandfather, local legend and World War II veteran, Sherwin Callander. After experiencing being with senior veterans Batté and Oakes started Honoring Veteran Legacies in January 2020, right before the world shut down. Callander, also known as Chick Magnet passed away in July 2022 at 102-years-old. He was a staple at all Honoring Veteran Legacies’ events. Oakes says the time she spent with him at these events as his “plus one, chauffeur and personal secretary” were priceless. “I didn’t even know he was a World War II veteran until he moved here in 2014. That’s when he opened up about Pearl Harbor, being a plank holder at the Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia and D-Day,” Oakes said. “I learned so much about the war in general, and on a very personal basis, and by him getting involved in veteran activities, it got me involved in veteran activities. And man did we have fun. I miss him.” The group accomplishes the first part of their mission primarily through the monthly meetings at Hope Church in Madison. These meetings begin with coffee, sweet treats and fellowship for 45 minutes before relocating to the church’s sanctuary where veterans are treated to a speaker from the community that shares information, history and activities that the group can enjoy together. And a meeting is not complete without the playing of the Armed Forces Medley, giving veterans the opportunity to stand and represent their branch of service. “Some of our veterans love our group and our activities. They make coming to the meeting a priority, and get there very early for the fellowship that happens before the meeting,” Oakes said. “We celebrate their birthdays and anniversaries. We award jackets with patches that help give them a sense of belonging.” The meetings have grown to about 80-100 people at each one. This is a mixture of veterans, perhaps, friends or caregivers. Like the volunteers and Oakes, veterans see the value in being a part of Honoring Veteran Legacies. Duane Hoffman, a Korean War veteran who served as a photographer on aircraft carriers did not feel his service was the same as those who went into battle. A television interview of a high-ranking officer who served on an aircraft carrier changed his mind, and joining HVL made him feel like even more of a veteran.

“We celebrate their birthdays and anniversaries. We award jackets with patches that help give them a sense of belonging.”

WWII Veteran Harold McMurran on Utah Beach, France. He landed there on D-Day.

“It is an honor to honor. And that goes both ways,” Hoffman said.”When the organization took us to the dedication of the Korean Memorial in Washington, D.C., it was heartwarming. It was something I’ll never forget. In our free time walking around, Korean women and children came up to me to tell me that they were there because of men like me. That’s something you will never forget. Those are the opportunities Honoring Veteran Legacies gives to veterans.” The group also offers support through a volunteer-to-veteran adoption process, allowing the development of personal relationships that aid in offering assistance in various areas that people encounter later in life. Cards are a vital piece of that adoption system. Also, in the past, the group took trips, including trips to the D-Day Anniversary activities in Normandy and Washington D.C. “Some of our veterans have been on the bigger trips, but many say they don’t want to travel “that far” for be gone for “that long”. Some of our veterans who may be more home-bound really enjoy the cards they receive from HVL for birthdays or when they fall ill. We have a great volunteer in charge of that,” Oakes said. “I’ve heard folks say that they enjoy being able to talk to someone ‘who understands.’” After a discussion with World War II veteran Harold McMurran, a few years ago, the organization decided to add an educational component, hence preserving legacies for future generations. In that discussion, McMurran revealed that he did not expect thanks for his service. In fact, he said that he did what all the guys did during the war—served their country. He did, however, disclose that having his story, along with the stories of other veterans, told to younger generations would be a gesture of honor. Honoring Veteran Legacies, Eternal Salute is dedicated to fulfilling McMurran’s wish. The program features a gallery of online cross-curricular lesson plans that include a professionally filmed video interview with a veteran to establish the lesson plan’s objective. Currently, the website contains approximately 50 lesson plans covering subjects such as social studies, math, science, and family and consumer science.

“This enables our veterans’ stories to be inserted into various classes, where they are an interruptor of sorts—and through that veteran’s story and lesson plan, the students can gain an appreciation for the service and sacrifice of the veteran, as well as have a more ‘real world’ example of the concept being taught,” Oakes said. “Imagine being in English class and your teacher showing a veteran’s story of D-Day, and being asked to write a letter home and send it through V-mail. What would you be feeling? What would you say to the family back home? This is just one example. We hope to fill it with lesson plans created by our wonderful teachers, many of whom have experience with a military veteran in their family. In contrast, fewer and fewer of our students have that experience anymore, as a way to honor those who fought for the freedoms we still enjoy today.” Volunteer, Marcia Crouch, knows firsthand the impact the organization can have on veterans. Her father, Pat Patterson, served in the Navy during World War II and was a faithful member of Honoring Veteran Legacies, joining the group when he moved from Memphis to Huntsville a few years ago. “I always enjoyed seeing him interact with the other veterans in the group. Daddy would always say that he did nothing special during the time of war. It was just doing one’s duty for their country,” Crouch said. “He did not go anywhere without wearing his WWII hat, and he never tired of people coming up to him to shake his hand. He was just proud that people cared all those many years after the war.” In 2023, Crouch, her father and her sister attended the anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France. The trip was organized through Honoring Veteran Legacies, which took two other World War II veterans on the journey. “He enjoyed every minute of that trip,” Crouch said. “He would turn to us and say that he didn’t serve in Europe, that he served in the Pacific. We just reminded him that he was being recognized for being a veteran and that the work he did in the Pacific helped others win the war.” CONTINUED >

Patterson’s video and an accompanying lesson plan on how the Navy used signal flags to communicate from ship to ship in the war were recently added to the Eternal Salute online lesson plan gallery. “I escorted him to his interview, and I was impressed by how he told his story. He was a salesman for a career and always enjoyed being the center of attention,” Crouch said. “It makes my heart proud that his story will be taught in schools. For kids to have a living tale to learn from is a credit to Honoring Veteran Legacies.” Patterson passed away in May 2025, but Crouch remains committed to the organization that she says made her father happy. She serves as the hospitality lead, greeting every veteran as they enter Hope Church for their monthly meetings. She also sends cards, makes phone calls, and works with veterans and their spouses during times of need. “It’s interesting to me as I get to know these veterans that, although they have done these incredible things, they do not think they are better. They are devoted to their country, and I love being around them and learning from them. They inspire me,” Crouch said. “It’s like I am helping my Daddy. The little things I do may make their life a little easier, a little happier.” Although a co-founder, Oakes has recently taken on the role of serving as the organization’s president. She coordinates meetings, volunteers,

fundraising and works with the education portion, but she says the best part of it all is getting to know the veterans on a personal level, and finding out what brings them honor. For some, they love the public recognition—especially our WWII veterans and some of our Vietnam veterans who did not get the “welcome home” that they deserved. They love being in parades, going to military dinners and ceremonies, and being recognized at various sporting events,” Oakes said. “For others, it’s about a more private experience—like getting them to a meaningful event or perhaps having a student get to know them and learn about their story. I also enjoy helping them get their veteran benefits— whether through taking them to the VA office early in the morning and getting in line to get them seen or by connecting them with others in our community who help with benefits. We have a lot of great resources in this area and we like to collaborate.” One thing is for certain, Oakes always pays tribute to the one who got her involved in the organization that brings honor and relevance to veterans-her grandfather. “My grandfather always kicked off the meetings with a joke. His goal was to make one person laugh every day. He loved telling jokes,” Oakes said. “We made it a part of our meetings, and when he passed, I figured I could continue as a tribute to him.”

WWII veteran Charles Henry received his paratrooper wings. Charles was denied being a paratrooper in WWII due to his race.

Trekking Through

Huntsville ‘Honeytrek’ Influencers Mike and Anne Howard’s favorite Huntsville spots

O UR TOWN | ARTS + C ULT U RE

Traveling full-time for the last 14 years through 91 countries across all 7 continents, Mike & Anne Howard are on The World’s Longest Honeymoon. Using Anne’s background as a magazine editor and Mike’s as a digital media strategist and photographer, the Howards launched HoneyTrek.com in 2011 to chronicle their travels, and have since written and photographed National Geographic’s bestselling book on couples adventure travel, Ultimate Journeys for Two, as well as the Lowell Thomas award-winning glamping guidebook, Comfortably Wild: The Best Glamping Destinations in North America. Their storytelling has gained a following of 400,000 across HoneyTrek’s social media channels. The Howards love sharing off-the-track destinations, unique accommodations, big adventures, sustainability successes, and the human stories that make each place so special. Where did their travel bug recently lead them? Why to none-other-than the Rocket City, of course. The Howards fell in love with Huntsville - it’s small town feel, yet big city offerings. From a painting class at Lowe Mill to exploring downtown and the mansions of Twickenham to dining at Domaine South, they savored their time in our city and made a list of their favorite things. We asked HoneyTrek to share their favorite adventures. These must dos are not to be missed, by both residents and visitors. When asked if they would return - resounding ‘yes’. CONTINUED >

1. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STORY AND HOW YOU BEGAN TRAVELING AND CONTENT CREATION. We had a dream to take a one-year honeymoon around the world and start our life together with unforgettable experiences. We created our blog HoneyTrek.com to share our travels with family and friends. Within a few months, HoneyTrek started gaining a following, then by 500 days, big publications started calling our journey “The World’s Longest Honeymoon.” This boost of confidence, plus the realization that long-term travel was far more affordable and fulfilling than we ever imagined, inspired us to keep going for another year, then another. 5,048 days later, we are still traveling full-time without a home base and storytelling for a living. 2. WHAT DO YOU MOST LOVE ABOUT TRAVEL? The people we meet! We are constantly amazed by the kindness of strangers and how much there is to learn from other cultures. In addition to connecting with locals, everywhere from Himalayan villages to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. We’ve also made friends with travelers from around the world creating a truly global community of friends. 3. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE IN HUNTSVILLE AND WHY? It’s impossible to pick just one, but we really adored Lowe Mill. 150+ artist studios, weekly workshops, concerts, and so many cool cultural events in one historic space offers such an incredible resource and a fountain of inspiration for Huntsville and its visitors. We love that the building retains its gritty charm and that artists are using the spaces in so many unique ways. For the full experience, we signed up for a painting class and even though we’re pretty terrible at fine art, our teacher Yuri Ozaki helped us make a watercolor we are actually proud of! When class was over, Concerts on The Dock was in full swing and we were dancing with the best of them. When the fun seemed like it was over, Chef Will the Palette (of vegetarian food truck fame) waved us over for a little dinner after-party. We chatted with some new local friends about vegan life for over an hour. We loved the serendipity and inclusivity of this place. What a treasure to Huntsville Lowe Mill is.

4. WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT HUNTSVILLE? We’ve never seen so many creative reuse projects in a city of this size. Stovehouse, Lowe Mill, Campus 805, and other once-defunct spaces have been turned into fun hang-spots. And even better, the city takes such pride in this that they have centered the Arts & Entertainment Districts around them. Letting people move from brewery to speakeasy with their magical purple cups makes exploring the city all the more fun. 5. IF YOU HAD TO NARROW DOWN YOUR TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN HUNTSVILLE, WHAT ARE THEY? • Catch a concert at The Orion • Take an Art Class at Lowe Mill • Wander the Mansions of Twickenham • Stay at Monte Sano’s Historic Cabins • Eat at Domaine South • See the real-time discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope at the US Space & Rocket Center’s Intuitive Planetarium CONTINUED >

Fit at 50 B O D Y R O K O W N E R M A R I A F A U L K N E R ' S D A I LY R O U T I N E Maria Faulkner, owner of BODYROK Pilates Studio, at 50 years old is a picture of health. She believes that a consistent routine is key to her success, and with a daughter and granddaughter, it is important for her to have the energy to enjoy life with them. She has given us an inside look at what her day consists of to keep her mind, body, and spirit strong and nourished.

Maria’s Daily Routine 1. I start my day by setting a goal to do 3 things- 1) learn something 2) move my body 3) do something to connect to another person. If I can say I have done all 3, even my toughest days are a win. 2. I think fueling your body properly is an important component that cannot be overlooked. I found that reducing my sugar intake and keeping my protein levels high, which takes some planning and forethought when I travel, helps me avoid big energy swings. I eat almost the exact same breakfast every morning- Greek yogurt with organic berries and Purely Elizabeth nut granola. 3. Pilates is my love, which i what lead me to open BODYROK, but I believe it is important to mix up my exercise routine. My routine consists of: • 3-5 days of Pilates/reformer training • 2-3 days of strength training • Walking 10,000 steps per day. I don’t obsess over my steps but I know I feel better on days I move more. 4. I journal at night to reflect on lessons learned or goals met that day, and then meditate right before bed to let go of stress and give my mind the rest it needs. I prioritize sleep and usually get 7-9 hours depending upon my work schedule. madison@bodyrok.com

Planning can help model out these decisions by illustrating how spending and saving today will impact your ability to achieve your goals. We live in a YOLO world today and unfortunately, what I see is many people walking down a path that will lead them to disappointment later in life. As a whole people need to moderate expectations of what they can have whether it be the house we in live, the car we drive, the college we send our kids to, or the vacations we take.

CHRIS ALLEN- STORY FINANCIAL PARTNERS (256) 503-5013

Pay yourself first - When you get that direct deposit in your account. Make sure that you set some funds aside for your future self. Doing this can be done automatically via online banking transfer or auto debit so you won’t be tempted to skip a month or two. Review Automated Subscriptions - After signing up for a free trial, it can be easy to forget to cancel once it’s over and the monthly charges begin. Take time to review your bank statement and make sure you aren’t wasting your hard-earned money on unused services. Set up Online Banking Alerts - Some banks offer an exceptional digital banking platform that allows you to add spending alerts and monitor your daily transactions with the click of a button. Ways to breathe new life into your home in 2026 With the new year comes a fresh start, and what better place to begin than your home? Small changes can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of your home, and Design Theory Interiors has all the tips on a home refresh that will give you a newfound place of serenity as you head into the new year. From the addition of new bedding to statement art that speaks to your soul and your home, find ways to update your space without breaking the bank. Refresh with soft textures by introducing new throw pillows and blankets; add color with a rich paint hue on cabinets or an accent wall; or change a space with a gorgeous rug that brings in new colors and textures.

Upgrade Soft Furnishings Upgrading your pillows and bedding is one of the easiest ways to make a bedroom feel brand-new. Fresh textures, fuller inserts, and updated colors instantly lift the whole space, adding comfort and polish without a big renovation. Even a simple swap to crisp sheets or a new duvet can make the room feel cleaner, calmer, and more intentionally styled. Even simple additions like throw pillows and blankets can breathe new life into a room.

Statement Art

Add a Pop of Color

New Rugs

Adding statement art refreshes your home by instantly creating a new focal point and setting the tone for the entire room. A bold piece introduces color, personality, and scale in a way that can make existing furniture feel re-styled, not replaced. It’s an easy, high-impact update that tells a fresh story about your space with zero remodeling while giving new personality to your room. Find local artists you love and your sense of home becomes even more meaningful.

Incorporating a pop of color on your kitchen cabinets refreshes your home by giving the most-used room an instant shot of energy and personality. Even a single color moment—like a painted island or lower cabinets—can modernize the space and make neutral countertops and finishes feel newly curated. It’s a high-impact change that transforms the kitchen’s mood. Colors like Transformative Teal, Hidden Gem (a smoky jade), Warm Eucalyptus (a muted sage), and Universal Khaki are all on trend for 2026.

Whether you like colors or neutrals, an accent rug can instantly change the look and feel of your room by adding in texture and dimension. Rugs can add color to a neutral room or give a soft texture to a previously hard floor. A small rug in an entryway gives personality to your home when guests enter while a large area rug can bring the whole room together. Our design experts can help you pick one that is perfect for your space.

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

2 OFF BROADWAY ST. SUITE 102

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to To hear the extended conversation with Dr. Kyle Gillett, scan the QR code for an exclusive continuously raise the podcast episode. standard of care.”

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
