Expand Your Palate THE FOOD + DRINK ISSUE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I tend to consider myself an equal-opportunity consumer when it comes to food and drinks (except pickles...definitely no pickles). Thankfully there is no shortage of dining options in our area. In this issue, we are excited to serve you a bit of world cuisine from Venezuela and France, with a touch of community favorites and the smooth finish of a new local micro-winery.

Over the past few years we have seen many new restaurants open, bringing new flavors to the local dining scene. We sat down with Empanadas Aquí, Mio Vino, and Le Macaron to learn more about their unique and delicious offerings. We were also lucky to talk to Chef Mark Bodenstein, one of the very talented minds behind the menu of S.W Clyborne Co. Provision & Spirits. If you’re like me, you may have wondered while at a formal event, “What is that little fork for?” Event experts at the Manor House Event Center are here to share the do’s and don’ts for creating a custom table setting for your special events. Our Giving Back story spotlights local Girl Scout Troop 44405. What started as a service project has now expanded to a food pantry serving students with food insecurity at Mason Intermediate and Mason Elementary Schools. Read about their mission and how you can help support them.

WOMEN WALKING WEST “POUR FOR A PURPOSE” FUNDRAISER Women Walking West (W3) is holding a virtual “Pour for a Purpose” bourbon raffle and fundraiser to support their quest to remove educational barriers facing adult foreign-born women. The event begins online on Oct. 5th and is sponsored by Bluegrass Carryout. W3 is grateful for the continued support of their donors and are hopeful they will meet their projected revenue for 2020, despite the challenges of COVID-19. There will be seven chances to win, including the grand prize of a bottle of 15-year Paddy Van Winkle Family Reserve. There will be

The dentist has a sweet confession to make. I have a new food fascination! I’m somewhat obsessed with the Nutty Cakes at the Sleepy Bee in Blue Ash. The Nutty Cake magic formula includes generous buttermilk pancakes (there is also a gluten-free option) prepared with chocolate chips in the batter, topped with a streak of natural peanut butter, sliced banana and Ohio-made pure maple syrup. If you do it just right you can distinctly taste the chocolate, the peanut butter, the banana and the maple syrup in each and every bite. Both the flavor and taste are magical! People tend to think of flavor and taste as synonymous terms. But in actual fact taste is just one component of flavor. The tongue is dotted in specific regions with neurologic taste receptors/buds that detect sweet, sour, savory, bitter and salt. Flavor takes into account the texture, temperature, and odor of food in addition to its taste. Imagine eating soup that has gone cold, an apple that is soft, or potato chips that are damp. The taste might be fine, but the flavor would be all wrong. If you like the taste of chocolate, peanut butter, banana and maple I promise you you’ll love the flavor of Nutty Cakes at the Sleepy Bee! BRIGHTVIEW ACQUIRES HOPE CENTER NORTH BrightView, a comprehensive outpatient addiction treatment provider with 17 locations throughout Ohio, has acquired HOPE Center North (HCN) from the Lindner Center of HOPE. HCN, located at 4483 US-42 in Mason, opened in March 2015 in response to the opioid crisis in Greater Cincinnati. The goal was to lead the community in providing life-saving, medication assisted treatment (MAT) to those struggling with addiction in the region. Since that time, many patients have found hope, recovery, and compassionate care at HCN. On August 3, HOPE Center North joined BrightView’s portfolio of evidence-based, patient-focused outpatient addiction treatment centers. BrightView began seeing patients in 2016 and has expanded throughout the state of Ohio over the past four years to provide comprehensive care in the communities most affected by the opioid crisis. Partnering with HCN will allow BrightView to bring its proven care model to the Mason area. Services will continue without major changes, including accepting new patients. A World of Sweet Possibility LE MACARON OFFERS A DELIGHTFUL COFFEE BREAK AND AN ARRAY OF TREATS AT LIBERTY CENTER. WHETHER YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT IS FROZEN, BAKED OR INTRICATELY DECORATED, THAT FIRST BITE IS EXQUISITE. Whatever was on your mind can take a break, and make room for a little sweetness. Marina Amaral has been a home dessert chef and world traveler her whole life: after growing up in Brazil, she has lived in Venezuela, Switzerland, Germany, and now, locally. “I learned a lot about people around the world and what kinds of desserts they like,” says Marina Amaral, owner of Le Macaron at Liberty Center. “This helped me a lot! I understand the customers better. I also speak Spanish and understand some French, which helps as well.” When she looked into starting a business in 2018, Marina found the perfect blend of her passions for living around the world and for baked treats. The Le Macaron name is part of a small French-owned franchise which allowed her to create a wonderful shop for desserts and craft coffee alongside the main attraction: macarons. “I started the process with this franchise in January, 2018,” says Marina. “In June, I found Liberty Center, which has great foot traffic. It’s perfect.” Macarons are a unique delicacy that look simple, but require a lot of finesse to create. The simple ingredients of almond flour, egg white and sugar are combined to create the shells of a sandwich. Flavorings and color are added in to create the many different types, from Lavender White Chocolate to Lemon Cream. The filling is flavored buttercream, delicate chocolate or jam. “The idea is that it’s an adventure every time you try one,” says Marina. “First, a crunch in the shell, then the moisture inside, then the melt-in-your-mouth sensation. Our logo says ‘a mouthful of heaven,’ for a reason.” At only 80 calories per macaron, these sweets are guiltfree, in addition to being made with gluten-free ingredients. Three flavors are also dairy-free—Strawberry Key Lime,

Passion Mango and Raspberry—making a visit to Le Macaron accessible for all dessert lovers. Beyond macarons, the shop has chef-crafted gelato, a frozen treat different from the average ice cream. “Ice cream is made using cream, while gelato is created using milk, so it’s not as heavy,” says Marina. “The flavors we have are made by a French chef, so we have slightly different flavors: macaron gelato, an almond based flavor with pieces of macaron, and we have violet flower and pistachio. They aren’t common. It’s a piece of Europe here.” Marina enjoys having the opportunity to work with a close friend as well as her employees who receive training each month in order to continue to provide an outstanding customer service experience. As a former teacher, she provides training about the products, but also helps employees be successful in life outside the shop. “I was an educator working with students with learning disabilities, so this is another way to use what I learned, to teach them how to be the best they can be,” she says. “We are always innovating here, with new training every month on how to be successful in the shop and beyond.” After nearly two years in business, she continues to find new joys within the coffee bar, pastry case and trays of macarons. “I love the new craft iced lattes. It’s iced coffee, plus gelato and syrup. For macarons, I love the Orange Grand Marnier macaron with the chocolate inside,” says Marina with a twinkle in her eye. “Every day, you want to try something different: eclair, napoleon or something else. I thought I’d be tired of desserts after six months, but there’s always something new!” Macarons have become popular as a compact, beautiful gift. Boxes can feature a single macaron as a favor or they can create ornate towers of macarons that make excellent party or wedding centerpieces that turn into delightful desserts at the end of the meal. If you’re looking for a high-quality gift, Le Macaron is happy to help—just keep in mind that macarons are best fresh, so pick them up less than three days before they’ll be consumed. Whether you work with Le Macaron to craft delicious corporate business gifts for the winter holidays or use it as a perfect place to drink a latte and nibble on a pastry, this shop offers a tasty way to transport yourself to France and beyond. UNCORK & UNWIND Love, togetherness and laughter—three things that wine is a catalyst for. And for Mio Vino Manager, Christy Hoskins, three things that the new downtown neighbor to Empanadas Aquí is all about. “Mio Vino is like a family,” Christy says. “You just pick up the phone and one of us will be there to help.” Whether you’d like to try a dry cabernet or the new South African blend, you’ll discover your very own “mio vino” thanks to Christy and her team. Teaching others about the craft is perhaps what sets the micro winery and wine bar apart from typical wine stores. Twenty wines are fermented on site and available for tasting—as well as creating. The “try-before-youbuy” mentality is at the crux of Mio Vino’s philosophy. “We offer a wine making experience,” she says. “You can come in and make your very own batch of wine from beginning to end. I enjoy helping customers define their wine palate.” With access to more than 100 wines from 13 countries, grapes come from only the finest vineyards and will satisfy any enthusiast. Choose a house bottle or craft your own personalized wine. Regardless of which you choose, Christy simply wants Mason neighbors to come in and feel comfortable having a glass or bottle of wine. “Surviving the pandemic has been tough,” she says. “The support of our communities and our amazing customers has not only gotten us through this, but we were also able to open this second location in Mason.” As a fill-in bartender at the Deer Park location several years ago, Christy and her husband now manage both locations—everything from the winemaking and bottling to keeping both wine bars stocked and ready for pouring. And despite only being open in Mason for a short time, Christy is looking forward to getting involved in the community. Mio Vino is planning to host a customer appreciation day to show how grateful they are to the community for their support. “We couldn’t do this without them,” she says. As vino lovers say, it’s the perfect pairing. MIO VINO 312 Reading Rd., Mason | Mio-Vino.com

Everything In Its Place LEARN THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF A PERFECT FORMAL PLACE SETTING FROM THE EXPERTS AT MANOR HOUSE EVENT CENTER.

4

WHETHER YOU’RE PREPARING FOR HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING OR A FAMILY CELEBRATION, DON’T FORGET PLACE SETTINGS! While formal place settings can take a little extra time, they are the perfect way to make a meal feel special and memorable. For insight into creating elegant, on-trend place settings, we worked with the experts at Manor House. They know a thing or two about creating an impression at the table and beyond, hosting around 500 events per year, from fundraisers to weddings and corporate gatherings.

8

At Manor House, the typical elements for a formal place setting are a plate charger, plates, napkin, three forks, one knife, one spoon and two goblets (for water and wine). They work closely with their clients and Primetime Event Rentals to create the perfect look for the overall table. “We want our clients to know all the options available to them,” says Shannon Wullenweber, sales manager at Manor House. “It starts with colored table linens and napkins, and then overlays or runners. Next, the options for plate chargers, specialty stemware and fine china, if they wish to explore looks beyond our (provided) beauti-

ful white china and gold/silver utensils and napkin rings.”

Do’s and Don’ts DO: Infuse your personality in the tablescape. More is better when it comes to the extras you add to the table. “Candles everywhere and of course flowers! Lots of flowers,” says Shannon.

DON’T: Leave the table bare if it’s a dinner party. Even if you keep it simple, the table should be set before guests arrive.

DO: Mix and match China and stemware, but understand there has to be harmony and rhythm to the overall look.

DON’T: Neglect the importance of planned seating. “Unique place cards are always a nice touch,” adds Shannon.

DO: Utilize each of the elements on the table to add interest. Plate chargers and napkins are a great way to add a pop of color

By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

H E A LT H Y SKIN Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.
