In this month's issue, we celebrate kids, pets and wildlife. As luck would have it, we had a brush with wildlife in our back yard last month. It started when the cat who adopted us when we moved into our house three years ago, failed to come home for dinner two nights in a row. We have grown pretty fond of our male cat Phyllis, named before the vet set us straight.

By the third day with no sign of Phyllis, we had pretty much given up hope. My wife Jennifer was in the back yard when she looked to her right and locked eyes with a panther the size of a large lion, about 30 feet away. He stood up and crouched forward. She slowly walked backward and was able to get in the house safely. She looked like she had seen a ghost. Phyllis wandered home two days later...shaken and bleeding, but fine. We assumed were she escaped the wrath of the panther but was hiding out for several days. Our backyard panther encounter piqued my interest so I researched the Florida Panther and discovered SWFL, and more specifically right here in Collier County is where the majority of Florida Panthers live! According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) only 150 still remain in the USA, making this one of the rarest and most endangered mammals in the world. You will be relieved to know that there has never been a verified panther attack on a human in the state. I had no idea there so few left and so many in our backyards. The FWC site show you where these panthers are at any moment as the majority have been tagged with a tracking

collar. The one my wife encountered was missing his collar, however, and the FWC had lost transmission, so they were interested in trying to locate the one who paid us a visit. If you see a panther, feel threatened by a panther, or have lost pets or livestock to a panther, please call the FWC Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or #FWC and *FWC on a cell phone. These amazingly beautiful animals unfortunately have the odds stacked against them to survive complete extinction. So, having one visit us at our home, standing facing my wife 30 feet away, was terrifying. But, pretty awesome as well. May your August be full of adventure! Yours truly,

sighted party. Please decide when it is necessary to make the adjustment for 6-feet between you and do it in a casual manner. When you see a guide dog team approaching, be observant and add a small amount of space between you as needed. There is no reason for exaggeration, but it’s easy to add a little physical separation to comply with safety practices. A slight movement one way or another will help a lot. We each do it every day in our people-to-people encounters. And please do this with subtlety and tact. The blind person approaching you does not want to feel awkward or to be put on the spot. Nor do they want to be given preferential treatment. Blindness in and of itself can be the cause of social isolation and often results in loneliness and distancing from life and human interaction. We are in no way suggesting that you avoid engaging with a visually impaired person—just not when that can interfere with their safety and health. ABOUT SOUTHEASTERN GUIDE DOGS Southeastern Guide Dogs transforms lives by creating and nurturing extraordinary partnerships between people and dogs. Our organization operates the most advanced training facilities of any service dog organization in the world. Our experts breed, raise, and train elite working dogs—including guide dogs, service dogs, and skilled companion dogs—and provide life-changing services for people with vision loss, veterans with disabilities, and children with significant challenges such as vision loss or the loss of a parent in the military. Pursuing our mission since 1982, Southeastern Guide Dogs now has over 1,200 dogs under our auspices. All of our services are provided at no cost to recipients. We rely 100% on private donations. C’MON ALSO IS COMMITTED TO CREATING A FAMILY EXPERIENCE BY OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AS THEY AGE. C’mon also is committed to creating a family experience by offering opportunities for children as they age. Visitors over the age of eight are able to experience Curious Kids, a special exhibit space designed just for older kids. As a “No Parents Allowed” space, they staff the area and provide age appropriate activities as a safe place to practice their independence. When taking turns in the Market, impulse and emotional control are put to the test for our youngest visitors. Their hands are ripe to play and practice learning by doing, but they are also doing the hard work of building their thought processes and connections that will be essential later in life by practicing patience and body control! As visitors grow older and practice these skills within the Museum, their play changes. The frustrations of waiting for their favorite animal in the Adopt-A-Pet clinic become the ability to redirect their play and make a choice to look at the x-rays or construct a tower in our Build It! exhibit. Many may think that their kiddos get a bit too old to come to C’mon as they enter into the upper grades, but there are opportunities for high schoolers too. As a teen volunteer or intern, many local high school and college students begin to gain professional experience and a preview into many new careers during their time at C’mon. There are virtual play and learn online activities too.
C’mon is operating at a limited capacity and reduced hours using timed online ticket entries on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Go to CMON.org 18

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
