Learning to Listen GIVEN ALL THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN OUR COUNTRY SINCE THE CALENDAR ROLLED OVER TO 2020, IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT WE ARE JUST NOW AT THE HALFWAY POINT OF THE YEAR. Just as COVID-19 exploded on the scene at the deadline for our April issue, the tragic death of George Floyd, and all the fallout from this travesty, took place around the deadline for our July issue. We will be addressing this topic in more breadth in our August issue, but the tragic murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd created an awakening in a lot of us. Instead of simply resting on the notion of “not being racist”, I am realizing the responsibilities that white people have, in regards to playing a more active role in asking tough questions, listening, and standing arm and arm with the black community. Boulder Lifestyle | July 2020

BRINGS OUT THE “ ART SPIRIT OF HUMANITY AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE ALIVE,” SAYS ANN KLEIN.

The mural on the outside of her and her husband Nathan’s family-owned gallery on Pearl St., SmithKlein Gallery (SmithKlein.com) celebrates this message. The art came as a response to the pandemic when the Kleins asked themselves: how is art essential? Their answer became: Art is Life. Art is Beauty. Art is Hope. “People relate to art because of life experiences, and the artists create based on their life or their dreams. Art brings beauty to the world and embraces what the world really is, whether it’s our sorrow, grief, or happiness. Art is hope, as it reflects human history and within that a bigger message that art asks you to open your eyes to,” says Klein. To promote this message, the Kleins connected to the owner of Streetwise Boulder, Leah Brenner Clack whose non-profit promotes public art murals, to find an artist for the project. Inspired by the bird graphics on Clack’s own fence, Klein enlisted artist Patrick Maxcy (PatrickMaxcyArt.com), whose career has been on pause due to the virus. He completed the project in just a day and a half; a vibrant series of birds and butterflies on a twisting branch against an azure-blue background. Walking by the gallery, you will see these brightly-hued and flight-bound birds that Klein says represent freedom and the first signs of spring. “Even though this virus is separating us, we need to find that deeper connection with ourselves, we need to rise up; flying high and getting a different perspective of life itself.” Klein discussed the power of art in terms of loss, referencing many artists in her gallery whose work has a shared theme: bereavement. The Kleins were recently confronted with loss themselves when their family’s Goldendoodle and “gallery dog” Lola, passed unexpectedly from cancer. That same day, a client purchased two pieces of art as a pledge to ensure their business would last long-after the epidemic was over—a validation that art is essential. Klein says, “these experiences remind me that we need to be open, just come in and enjoy art, come in and heal.” CityLifestyle.com/Boulder

HIDDEN AMONG INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS OFF BOULDER’S DIAGONAL HIGHWAY IS A MUSEUM HOUSING HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN IRREPLACEABLE RACECARS. The 501c3 nonprofit, the Shelby American Collection, rivals the most dazzling automotive museums in the world, from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, to Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse, France, and Petersen Automotive in LA. The Shelby American Collection is arguably finer, preserving the iconoclast of Shelby racecars; the first American cars not only to compete with European powerhouses like Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Porsche, but to beat them.

In 1965, Shelby’s Cobra Roadster and Coupe won the World Manufacturers' GT Championship race car series— the most important and prestigious sportscar competition in Europe and North America. The Cobra became the only American vehicle to win, and that remains true to this day. What made the Cobra so enigmatic was its combination of speed and maneuverability. Even more astounding, the car was created by a group of California hot-rodders on a shoestring budget and attracted the world’s finest drivers.

Established in 1996 with the legend Carroll Shelby himself, the museum was formed by a group of Boulderites with a shared passion for vintage Shelbys. Among them are Bill and Dave Murray from Loveland who raced Cobras semi-professionally in the ‘80s, Tom and Karen Benjamin, and Larry H. Miller and his family. At the helm is Steve Volk— a tech entrepreneur with an ignitable passion for racing. “I’ve been involved with cars my whole life,” Volk says, “As soon as I was able, I started collecting — Jaguars, Ferraris— but the Cobra and Ford GT 40 have always been my favorites.”

AFTER MEETING IN BRECKENRIDGE IN 2007, KARLY (A COLORADO NATIVE) AND CHRISTIAN (BORN AND RAISED IN BUENOS AIRES), HAVE SETTLED IN BOULDER, GROWN THEIR FAMILY TO FIVE (THREE BOYS!) and opened their own “Little Argentine Corner.” The restaurant (RinconArgentinoBoulder.com), has had a line out the door ever since opening in 2012. “My life’s dream was to open a restaurant. I enjoy more the concept of Rincon, that every single person that walks in here feels comfortable; it is a place for everyone.” Nicknamed “club social” by locals, the space incites community centered around traditional Argentine food connecting them to their Latin American neighbors. The famous empanadas are a blend of Christian’s mother’s recipes emboldened by his culinary education from the Instituto Gato Dumas. They are made with chopped and sautéed meat and vegan ingredients, range from mild to spicy, and are meant to be savored with a hot cup of imported maté tea. This multi-cultural family runs the restaurant together, and their sons never miss a beat. Noa, age 10, says, “I like stuffing the empanadas and working the cash register, because it’s the easiest job and because I get to see my friends when they come in.” You’ll probably find Felipe, age 7, speaking Spanish to customers while washing tables and eating his favorite gaucho empanadas made with ground beef, caramelized onions, red peppers and raisins.

58

Boulder Lifestyle | July 2020

Bright-eyed Nico, only one-years-old, will most likely by indulging in a freshly-baked empanada the size of his face. “The boys grew up around the culture. Every weekend they are learning the art of asado. They are around the fire, and they love to eat the Argentine food,” says Christian. On any given day in Buenos Aires, “you can tell who is barbecuing, who is making empanadas, chorizo, and you can smell the onions and red peppers all through the neighborhood,” says Christian. And on every Sunday the asado, a traditional South American barbecue, takes center stage while spiraling smoke wafting from lawns and rooftops signals the family event has begun. The Rosen’s own backyard near Boulder hosts weekly asados that take place around the traditional parilla, an open-fire barbecue and manned by the asador, who is responsible for slow-cooking and perfectly charring the juicy lamb and savory sausages. This seven-to-eight hour event invites a stiff drink (or two), and features flowing cups of maté, bilingual conversations and kids bouncing across the yard—bringing the Latin sabor stateside. During Covid-19, Rincon Argentino has stayed open for takeout, selling empanadas as either frozen, par-baked or ready-to-eat. “It’s been really cool to see people taking our empanadas rock-climbing or boating; those rich experiences shared as a family that doesn’t necessarily have to be in the four walls of a restaurant,” says Karly. Buenprovecho!

¡QUE RICO! Empanadas are made differently across Latin America using a variety of dough, fillings, and cooking methods. The Argentine empanada is a staple on the dining table and ranges from lowcost ingredients to gourmet fillings. At Rincon Argentino, they craft a happy blend of both, “made with quality and love,” says Christian. VISIT: 2525 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, CO 80302 CALL: (303) 442-4133

Who's In Your Cocktail Squad? ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JIMENA ZAMORA TODAY MORE THAN EVER WE FIND OURSELVES RELYING ON OUR COMMUNITY THE MOST. We are relying on our friends, family, coworkers, health workers, or any circle you find yourself part of to keep moving forward each day. Lauren and John, founders of Cocktail Squad, like all of us, have adjusted their lives and small business in a blink of an eye. They’ve had to find ways to keep the hustle going and keep their business growing in a changed environment. Something that definitely hasn’t changed is their commitment to the “squad life.” Cocktail Squad goes beyond crafted canned cocktails; the name says it all. It’s about bringing people together and sharing experiences, adventures, and maybe even some new activities with physical distance in mind. The portability of their products allows for “to-go experiences” and the idea that your squad can be with you wherever you go. But who is your Squad? Or what do you do now to find those special moments? Since concerts and music festivals have been cancelled for the summer, Lauren and John, who have great passion for connectivity with music in Colorado, have started “Squad Sessions.” This is an online Concert Cocktail Hour every Thursday which releases a music set from an artist recording from their home. As they like to say, this is the “fabric of their brand”—to support a community they believe in (encouraging visitors to donate to frontline causes) and provide some lightheartedness and a fun space for anyone who is missing social connections or who maybe just need to dance it off. So, who is your Cocktail Squad? Well, anyone. Anyone who reminisces on having a cold drink outside, daydreams of sandy beaches and backpacking adventures with family, someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously and enjoys collaborations, great stories, and “cheersing” with friends or family. The Cocktail Squad name says it all. Different animals with no particular faces, with alternate goals and ways of life, but with the certainty that they are here in this world, sharing spaces, experiences, and coexisting together.
