Prince Edward County ARTICLE IRENE MIDDLEMAN THOMAS | PHOTOGRAPHY MARK RUSH

“SO THAT’S THE ROUTE! Eh?” Bicycle trips in English-speaking Canada involve a lot of “eh’s” (loosely, the Canadian form of ‘right’ or ‘OK’) as well as almost unbelievable friendliness. At the launch of our five-day exploration of Prince Edward County with Randonnée Tours of Vancouver, we met with the company’s Area Manager, Ed. He wanted to make sure we understood our cycling maps and was willing to take as long as it took to mention “must-do’s,” such as visiting Slickers, his favorite ice-cream shop, which, the next day, became our favorite as well. Ah, for a cone filled with Campfire Cream just now! Randonnée, now in its 25th year, specializes in self-guided, customized active cycling, hiking, walking and multi-sport tours in Canada, the U.S., and several European countries. McKinney grew up in Prince Edward County and still has numerous relatives and friends there (including a nephew who owns a perfect end-of-trip celebratory brewpub in Picton!) We decided to visit Prince Edward County after reading intriguing stories in such outlets as Travel & Leisure, which included it in its 2015 list of Best Places to Travel, describing it thusly: ‘Cross Montauk, NY, with California’s Napa Valley circa 1970, and you get Prince Edward County,

detox your skin through food

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LAURA OSWALD

Fort Collins Lifestyle | August 2020

DO YOU WANT TRULY FABULOUS SKIN? Glowing, vibrant, and, yes, younger-looking skin? Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy skin diet. Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but your outer being as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look. The less attention we pay to eating a healthy skin diet, the more problems we may see cropping up with our skin. When your diet is missing healthy skin foods, even more serious skin problems can result. You may find yourself suddenly breaking out with acne, eczema and psoriasis. These skin conditions can be directly linked to diet. Paying attention to balanced nutrition is the best way to make sure you're eating a healthy skin diet. That said, as much as we may try to resist it, our skin does naturally age. Wrinkles and age spots are the inevitable result of time, but skin ageing may be sped up by overexposure to the sun and tanning beds, strong soaps, chemicals and poor nutrition. With this in mind, a holistic approach is best. Treat your skin kindly and optimize your nutrition by eating antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, healthy fats and a varied and balanced diet. This should give optimal levels of the nutrients that are crucial for radiant skin, including beta carotene, vitamins C and E, zinc and selenium! I’m excited to share this delicious detox salad because our skin is our largest organ and we should eat with this in mind! We are what we eat and this amazing salad had ingredients jam packed with nutrients that your skin will love!

SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS

SKIN DETOX SALAD

CARROTS Did you know carrots can protect your skin from sun damage? That’s because carrots contain beta-carotene. The beta-carotene is amazing for protecting the skin from sun damage and wrinkles. RED BEETS Another detoxifying superstar! Beets can purify the blood, eliminate toxins, protect us against free radicals and they can prevent cell damage helping your skin glow. CILANTRO Cilantro is a major antioxidant, anti-fungal, and antiseptic that helps in clearing up your skin and keeping it smooth and glowing. ALMONDS Another antioxidant-rich ingredient. Almonds provide healthy fat, protect against oxidative stress, fight wrinkles and contribute to glowing skin.

INGREDIENTS + 1/4 cup red cabbage, + 1 medium carrot, + 1 small beet, + 1 handful of radishes + 1 small endive, + a handful of cilantro + a handful of chopped raw almonds

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well. For dressing: Mix lemon juice, a splash of raw apple cider vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and pepper. Pour over salad mixture. I hope you enjoy this delicious detox salad recipe! You skin will thank you!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING, IT'S TIME TO GET OUTSIDE AND THOSE PUPS WANT TO COME ALONG! Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy nature and get outside. Dr. Katie Woodley of The Natural Pet Doctor is sharing her best tips for safe exploration!

The Natural Pet Doctor's

1. BEFORE YOU GO Finding the best trail requires research ahead of time. You and your dog's hiking experience will depend on how prepared you are and the trail you choose. Remember if you are visiting a National Park, they can be very restrictive when it comes to hiking with your dogs. Check out local hiking guides to determine if where you are planning on going allows dogs. AllTrails is a great resource to look for local hikes that allow dogs. Also, make sure you know what the terrain will look like. Check the weather forecast. What time of day are you planning on hiking? Dogs do not have efficient heat exchange like we do through sweating. They rely on panting, and because of this, they can develop heat stroke which can be life-threatening. If you are noticing your dog is panting excessively, lagging behind and their tongues are bright red, stop immediately, seek shade and water and let your dog rest.

It's always important to be aware of where your dog is on the trail, especially when in the backcountry. There have been numerous cases of dogs that are led away by a coyote that appears to be playing but is really bringing your dog to the rest of the pack to be attacked. By keeping your dog on a leash, you can ensure that this will not happen. When hiking in the forest or backcountry, we are in wild animals', like bears and mountain lions, natural environments. You and your dog could come into contact with these animals at any time. Another huge risk to your dog's health are rattlesnakes. If your dog is off-leash, there is a much higher chance of them being bit by a rattlesnake. By keeping them on a 6 foot length or less leash (not retractable), you can bring them back in if you come across a snake. Slowly back away until the snake stops rattling and then remember that if there is a snake, there are more than likely more of them around. CONTINUED >

4. RISKS

04.

There are many risks when out on the trail

with your dog, ranging from heat stroke, to cactus, to rattlesnakes, and other wildlife, depending on where you live and hike. If your dog gets bit, carry them to the car if possible or if you can't, walk (do not run) back to the car. You want to limit exercise to keep the blood from pumping the venom throughout their body, and then go to a veterinarian immediately. Many emergency clinics will carry anti-venom which can help limit the severity of the bite to your dog. Other risks to your dog on the trail, especially if you are in Colorado, include cactus. If your dog runs through an area with cactus, they can get the spines (needles) of cacti stuck in their mouth, feet, coat, eyes, and ears. While not life-threatening, cactus spines can cause your dog a lot of discomfort and pain. A large amount of cactus spines may require immediate veterinary intervention, because your dog may need sedation to remove all of the spines. If the mouth and eyes are involved, you will want to take your dog to the veterinarian immediately. Treat a cactus spine as a puncture wound and use the right tools while removing the spines from your dog's skin. You can start with a relatively coarse comb to get rid of the needles, but you need to be careful in case the needles are near blood vessels. Therefore, it is always good to keep a styptic stick and gauze close to you, which are tools in your first aid kit you have with you (see above). After using the coarse comb to remove some of the needles, remove the remaining individual needles with a pair of forceps or tweezers by pulling each one of them in the direction of fur growth. Clean the area with Betadine and apply triple antibiotic ointment to the wound areas. Remember dogs are natural explorers and love going on adventures with us. Make sure you are prepared to keep them safe and healthy while on the trail. 24

workout from home tips

Fort Collins Lifestyle | August 2020

I'VE NEVER BEEN THE TYPE TO WORKOUT AT HOME. I thrive on the social aspect of a group fitness class and excitement of the other fitness enthusiasts. Truth be told, I also feel like I work out harder when I'm in front of others. As someone who finds her motivation from being around other people at the gym or fitness class, I never considered myself a work out at home type of person. While we all figure out our new pandemic related routines, it's becoming more and more apparent that working out at home is here to stay. The hardest part for me has been to actually stick to a schedule. Without the fear of being late to a busy class- motivation expectations are at an all time low. I've scoured the web and researched ways to stay motivated at home so I'm going to share those findings with you so that we can all become more accustomed to working out alone at home, together. ARTICLE JAHNA EICHEL

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

TIP #1 Schedule Your Workouts & Stick To It Add your workout to your calendar and commit. Preferably in the morning before you've started your day. The more we can set a new standard for our routine, the easier it will become.

JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE AT HOME DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD THROW OUT ALL OF YOUR RITUALS AND ROUTINES.PUT ON YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT OUTFIT AND HAVE YOUR PRE-WORKOUT SNACK.

TIP #2 Be Nice To Yourself Don't set a crazy goal that may be unattainable. If every day feels out of reach, try a small goal first like three days per week. TIP #3 Get Creative With Your Workout Space We love the gym because it feels like a gym. If sprucing up your space to give it a more athletic aesthetic will help you get motivated- go for it! Shopping for home decor is fun anyway. TIP #4 Splurge on sticking to your pre and post workout routines, even at home. Just because you're at home doesn't mean you should throw out all of your rituals and routines. Put on your favorite workout outfit and have your pre-workout snack. Afterwards, take time to stretch, mellow out and enjoy a shower. You don't feel like you have to get up right away—you're at home so you're probably not in a rush, so take your time. Breathe, relax and recover.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

Glue the your rectangular pieces to one side of your rocket ship, then glue the back on. You should have an open spot at the top where your pencils will go. 3. Glue the rest of your pieces to the front of your rocket and add embellishments as desired.

CRINKLE CUTIES

M AT E R I A L S + Construction paper + Scissors + Glue

DIRECTIONS 1. Prep the pieces you’ll need for each piece of your garland—you’ll need a combination of large half circles, slightly smaller half circles and any other decorative shapes you want to add. 2. Take the largest half circles and fold multiple times to make small creases, creating the crinkle effect. Glue the smaller half circles on top and then add any additional decorative shapes. 3. Punch holes in both ends of the completed product to place string through, then hang on a wall or in a doorway.
