SWEET PROVISIONS At Sweet Provisions, an ice cream shop, bakery, and candy shop, the ice cream is made fresh daily in small batches, using only local Arizona dairy and fresh ingredients, and with no artificial flavors or colorings. Grab a scoop, a float, a shake, a blizzard, pie a la mode, or a banana split. Flavors run the gamut. “My personal favorite is the Coconut Cream Pie ice cream,” says Christopher Collins, restaurateur and owner of Common Ground Culinary, which owns the locale. “We take freshly baked pies from our bakery and churn them with our vanilla base ice cream. In addition, we offer the Kitchen Sink, where we take broken pies, cookies, and baked goods from our bakery, and mix them into our ice cream. Each batch is just a little bit different, which keeps guests coming back.” 8120 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale. SweetProvisionsAZ.com THE BAKED BEAR Sure you could just eat the ice cream here, but at The Baked Bear, why not sandwich it between two fresh, tasty cookies or brownies? Launched by two friends in San Diego, this cult favorite destination now serves up its treats in three locations around the Valley. There are more than a dozen original-recipe cookies and ice cream flavors, and the ice cream is made using all-natural bases and rBGH-free dairy. A native Phoenician, Norris was working on lawns and yards since he was a kid. “Going from mowing lawns down the street for $10 to working on very large projects for high-end clients is really a blessing,” he says. He became infatuated with the landscaping process and maintenance, and how they merge to improve someone’s quality of life. “It’s something I really enjoy being part of,” he shares. He also enjoys the aspect of helming a true family business. His dad oversees the technical irrigation and lighting systems, repairs, installation, maintenance, and quality control. Norris’s wife Bahia handles the finances, and Norris does the design work and everything else needed to make sure all runs smoothly. “But the extended family within our team members and leaders is the real heart of the company. Having a team that has a unique passion for creating stunning outdoor environments is the most important aspect. There is something special about working on a project for sometimes months on end, looking back at it when its complete, and knowing you were part of something great,” he says. What gives him the edge is enjoyment of one facet of the process that is typically the least liked: the maintenance side of the job. This has improved his design applications. “Nobody enjoys the labor-intensive portion. But over time, I learned to appreciate the fundamentals of landscape and maintenance. Having that understanding is important to creating a sustainable, low-water setting,” Norris says. The altitude that High Desert Designs clients are accustomed to means that their expectations are also high. Norris and his team must rise to meet that and manage those expectations at that level. The fact that his business has grown exponentially in such a short time indicates he’s successful at it. When you are passionate about something that has been your life’s work, it’s no surprise that he delivers. And what is always refreshing is the feedback he receives from past clients, especially during the perfect time of year. “When the cactus are blooming and I get texts, emails, or calls from clients years after we did the install still enjoying and loving their outdoor living space, it is always gratifying,” Norris says. “Just to be part of someone’s quality of life is pretty special.” 22

HIGH HEELS AND HANDGUNS Local author Lisa Heartman spins this tale about Kate Howard, a former Army Special Forces Sergeant, whose life as a one-woman personal protection detail comes with challenges. Wearing civilian camouflage while guarding high-profile clients is a dangerous game of rock, paper, hollow point. After an explosive and deadly end to her client’s reelection fundraiser, Kate must accept help from an unwanted source: the soldier she loved and left in Afghanistan, bloody, broken, and barely alive. Special Forces Officer Paxton Banks, Kate’s former captain—now an FBI agent—is assigned to investigate the attempt on her client’s life. After 10 years, old emotions and new threats whip Kate’s world into complicated chaos. $10.99 at Amazon.com
GET REAL “Fake it till you make it.” The old adage may be a hallmark of our personal/ professional lives, but the truth is inauthenticity leads to dissatisfaction—and disaster. In this book, author Anna Crowe, founder and CEO of Crowe PR, helps you break bad habits and integrate authenticity with advice on how to infuse everything you do with authenticity, leading to a happier and more profitable life. Don’t fake it—use the genuine tools within (and what’s exclusively yours) to unlock the power of authenticity in your world. $15.99 at Amazon.com
PHOTOGRAPHS BY BARRY M. GOLDWATER: THE ARIZONA HIGHWAYS COLLECTION Although Barry M. Goldwater is best known nationally as a U.S. senator and 1964 presidential nominee, his love of politics may have been surpassed by his passion for photography. He spent a lifetime carrying around a camera, documenting the people and places of his beloved state of Arizona, and, since 1939, hundreds of his photographs have appeared on the pages of Arizona Highways. Many of those photographs appear in this coffee table book, written by Robert Stieve and Alison Goldwater Ross, along with profiles of the senator. $29.99 at Amazon.com and GoldwaterFoundation.org
