All Are Welcome IT HAS BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT 2020. If you had asked me to predict what our community would experience this year, I would not have come close. But, Minnesotans have pivoted and rallied. We have taken precautions to reduce COVID-19, adapted to less in-person socialization, incorporated working at home, implemented more virtual interaction and events, and have even home schooled our children. We are embracing steps towards positive change; working towards ending racism in our communities

and rebuilding on a new foundation after the injustice and death of George Floyd. It is a forever memorable year. The words stay healthy and safe still ring true as we continue to face challenges and the unknown of what lies ahead. Many times these publications are planned and printed before major events have occurred. But, I would like our readers to know that ALL are welcome with the Minneapolis Lakes publication, and I hope we are a bright spot in your mailbox. August is our kids and pets issue with an aim to make you smile. This month, the Minneapolis Lakes team connected with the equine therapy program, We Can Ride, and learned how their support brings relief to men, women and children with disabilities and

EAL (EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING) works with a group of individuals that all have the same goals. This program focuses on lessons off the horse and is very beneficial for all ages. For example, this program might benefit adolescents with a disability who may be graduating high school and needing to learn skills for the workforce

“WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT THAT OUR COMMUNIT Y GIVES US, WE REALLY COULDN’ T DO IT WITHOUT THEM.”

such as communication, teamwork, taking direction and asking for help when needed. Simply grooming a horse improves order and memorization of a sequence while working with others to get the task done. Learning how to approach and lead a horse works on communication and problem-solving skills, especially learning to read the body language of the horse to figure out what works and what doesn’t to achieve the goal. EQUINE CONNECTION is a new program that is currently offered to adult community members who are experiencing stress in their life. This therapy can be very beneficial to front line workers such as doctors, nurses and EMT’s. This connection work is done off the horse and gives them an hour and a half to step away from the stress of their jobs, learn new skills, and work as a team. “We have seen big drops in blood pressure, which makes a huge impact on people,” says Mitten. “This also gives them something to draw on a later date when they are feeling stressed. Just being around the horses brings enjoyment.” As a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization, We Can Ride depends on the generosity of the community to keep the programs going and offers scholarships for children and individuals who may not be able to afford it. Donations extend the program to reach those who have never participated and could potentially benefit from equine assisted activities and therapy. It also provides additional equipment, shelter and care for the horses. Each donation small or large makes a difference. To learn more about We Can Ride programs,

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK

RIDE IN STYLE KID EDITION

ARTICLE KASSI MIRANOWSKI 16

Minneapolis Lakes | August 2020

AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN EVERYONE’S LIFE IS TURNING SIXTEEN, HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO START DRIVER’S EDUCATION, AND FINALLY RECEIVING YOUR LICENSE. The sense of freedom that this accomplishment brings is such an exciting time! Electric cars for your kids will give them an early preview of this as well as offer a thrilling, yet safe way for the whole family to have fun. Electric cars for children are a smart investment as they teach children good hand-eye coordination along with the basics of road and vehicle safety practices. Another benefit is the sense of imagination that children will develop while driving their very own car. Need gas? Fill ‘er up! Friend is in need of a ride? Pick ‘em up! Engine broke down? Fix ‘er up! The possibilities are endless and will bring your child hours of fun. Another added feature is that these electric cars are made for a wide range of ages. For the early stage toddlers, they offer cars that are remote controlled so parents can be in charge of driving the vehicle. Some even have the ability to be switched over to manual mode at a later state, which allows the child to grow into the vehicle and drive it themselves when they are ready. Most vehicles come with different power settings to ensure that beginner drivers can start off slow and bump up their speed when they become more skilled at navigating their car. Pick your car carefully - there are so many options available! Some feature working radios, headlights, double seats, trunks, fancy wheels and more. At the end of the day, your kiddo can drive their ride into the garage and plug it in for another fun filled day tomorrow!

From estate planning to investments, Julie says the team can “be proactive in how we approach the planning and allows us to break it down so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.” Julie wants clients to understand that Bremer advice is regulated and fiduciary. She stresses, there is a duty “to always act in the best interest of the client.” As far as ensuring strong financial stability, Julie says it is “Prudent to make sure you have what we call a strong balance sheet. Always be looking at what you are saving and investing, and make sure the debt you are taking on makes sense.” It is also smart to have 3-6 months of liquidity in savings for unforeseen circumstances. Julie recommends making sure you trust your advisor, communicate about the plan regularly, and try to avoid making rash or emotion-based decisions. “Stay focused on the long-term goals that you have. DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

PIÑLLAMA

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

Dog Days of Summer HOW DOWNTOWN DOGS AND DOG'S DAY OUT CATER TO THE CANINES

DOWNTOWN DOGS IS RUN WITH HEART AND SOUL, AND YOU FEEL IT FROM THE MOMENT YOU WALK THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR. From the enthusiastic greetings by the staff to the joyful demeanors of the dogs, it is a happy environment. Ralph Bernstein, owner of Downtown Dogs and his new DIY dog wash and grooming facility, Dog’s Day Out, had a unique start in the business. After moving to the Twin Cities with his wife and children twenty- five years ago, Ralph was on the corporate path and working long hours while traveling and raising a family. All of that abruptly changed in 2011 when his wife suffered a stroke and died unexpectedly. Left to cover a lot of bases, Ralph knew he had to make adjustments to his life. In addition to juggling his children’s needs; another was finding a safe dog daycare center. He remembers seeing ads in the skyway for Downtown Dogs and decided to give them a try. Soon, he realized that dropping off and picking up his dog at Downtown Dogs was a huge bright spot in his day. Fast forward to 2014 when

They want every owner to know and see that “every dog is special to them.” Ralph explains that they run several tailored schedules each day. Tailored scheduling allows them to accommodate the unique needs of each dog. For example, some dogs may have more energy in the morn-

Dog’s Day Out also offers full- serve bath and grooming appointments. Training classes and retail are planned for the near horizon. Ralph aspires to offer his customers products from locally owned companies who make dog treats and gear. Ralph has a personal interest in his business as well. He and his wife of one year, Abbe, are the proud owners of three dogs that include Frannie, the 9 year-old Pug who accompanies Ralph to work each day along with Lyle, the Wire Hair Fox Terrier. Helen, a 70 lb. hound-mix rescue, who was born completely blind, prefers to roam the yard at home. Personally and through Downtown Dogs, Ralph helps to support many charities including Pet Haven, Underdog, Warrior Dogs, Secondhand Hounds, Spot’s Last Stop, Mission Animal Hospital and Home for Life. When asked what he imagines what dogs would say if they could speak, Ralph answers without hesitation, “I can’t wait to go to Downtown Dogs. It’s so much fun and I get to be myself.” (In light of these times, and to increase customer confidence and convenience, Downtown Dogs and Dog’s Day Out offer curbside service. The staff will fetch and retrieve your dog to and from your car on request. The high ceilings and large, open plan design of both businesses allow for plenty of air circulation and social distancing.) Visit www.dtdogs.com or www.dogsdaympls.com for more information. 30

PARTING THOUGHTS

INSTAPETS OF MINNESOTA GET TO KNOW SOME OF THE HOMETOWN FAVORITES

ARTICLE KASSI MIRANOWSKI

MEET DORIS, FRANK, AND NORMAN @threelittlefrenchies Doris is 9 years old and is one of the original @threelittlefrenchies. Her favorite activities are bird watching and napping on a fluffy blanket. She’s never been into toys but does enjoy chewing on a bone. Five year old Frank is a happy go lucky guy with a big smile and an even bigger underbite. He enjoys eating sticks, toy parts, and anything he can get out of the garbage! He is very attached to his people and howls when they leave. He loves chasing and wrestling with his younger brother Norman. Norman is two. He is very loving and always wants to be on someone’s lap. He is very vocal - crying and whining until he gets picked up. Needless to say he is a very spoiled pup! In addition to playing and wrestling with Frank, they also are double trouble. They have destroyed more dog beds than their dog mom, Angela, can count. Doris just sits on the couch watching the mayhem with a look that says, "boys, that is not a good idea!" All three enjoy baths, warm ovens, fireplaces, and walks.

MEET ROSE @rosethegoldenr Rose is a Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest (RAGOM) rescue and is three years old. She was given up twice because of a condition which made her leak urine, but with medication, she is leak free and a completely healthy dog! She is an extremely gentle dog who rarely barks, but is super expressive nonetheless! She can only greet someone if she has something in her mouth (a towel, socks, a toy, etc). On walks, the bigger the stick, the better. Rose is afraid of the dark and hates carrots but loves cucumbers. She hates the rain, but loves to swim. Rose’s favorite activities include swimming, chomping on sticks, laying on brewery patios in the Cities, belly rubs, and playing with her kitten brother.

MEET SECONDHAND HOUNDS @secondhandhounds Secondhand Hounds is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue in Minnesota. Founded in July of 2009, their many volunteers have made a positive impact on the lives of many dogs and cats in the Minneapolis community, with over 20,000 animals rescued. Secondhand Hounds provides safe shelter, proper veterinary care and daily necessities for animals at risk, while working hard to find each a permanent, loving home! Many of the animals they rescue are those that are out of time at kill shelters. They also rescue animals that may have severe injuries which other shelters cannot foot the bill for in terms of necessary surgery or medication that the animal may require. Beyond adopting a pet, Secondhand Hounds is always looking for volunteers. If you would like to help foster a pet in need, or if you would like to help with events they host,

visit

www.secondhandhounds.org

and get connected with a team member. If you are able and willing to donate to their cause, you can access donation options online at the same web address listed above. Be a part of helping to save a life not only will it change the pet’s life, it will also change yours!
