AS A MOM OF FOUR (THREE HUMANS AND ONE DOG), THIS “KIDS AND PETS” ISSUE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ISSUES OF NORTHWEST BERGEN LIFESTYLE. I’ve always been a dog lover and was excited to do a story on the Caring Eyes Puppy Raising Club. This dedicated group of local volunteers raises puppies for The Seeing Eye in Morristown; the organization that trains and provides Seeing Eye® dogs for visually-impaired individuals. I hope you’ll enjoy their inspirational stories and perhaps you’ll consider getting involved as well!

We also spoke to Stacey Antine of HealthBarn USA in Ridgewood and discovered how their farm-to-table nutritional curriculum teaches kids about healthy eating. Stacey has the magic touch of getting picky 4-year-olds to try new vegetables and fruits, and she engages kids in learning about planting, growing, and even cooking dinner throughout her programs. Crystal Rose of Unity Bank advises us on teaching kids about another kind of “green” that doesn’t grow on trees. Money! Read up on her tips for helping your children appreciate the value of money, learn about saving, and some great ideas for earning a little cash this summer!

travel environments so they can accompany their future owners anywhere. The group has also gone bowling, played mini-golf, and attended hayrides, collegiate sporting events, and dance performances—all with their canine companions. These lucky pups also accompany their families on special outings. “For my daughter’s birthday, Dobbs went with us to see “Frozen” on Broadway followed by dinner at Sardi’s, where he was a very welcome guest,” says Karen. The group makes a point of creating awareness for The Seeing Eye organization. “We find that every time we take the dogs out, we become ambassadors for The Seeing Eye,” says Carol. “People want to pet the dogs and ask questions. We always explain that you can pet the puppies (ask first) but when the dog is working in-harness, you should not distract or touch it. COVID-19 has brought about many changes to the group’s meetings as well as the Morristown training program. Typically, the dogs are returned to The Seeing Eye at about 16 months of age for their intensive training as guide dogs. However, due to the pandemic, training took a hiatus and the dogs were transferred back into foster care until reopening. Upon completing their training, “graduating” dogs will participate in a Town Walk to demonstrate their skills while their proud raisers observe--usually with tears in their eyes. The club helps to share the life-changing benefits that a guide dog can provide its owner, and puppy-raisers understand that the dogs move on to be well cared for and enjoy a meaningful life. This makes it a little easier to return the dog when it’s time to part ways. “It’s tough to give the dog back,” says Karen. “We like to overlap a new puppy with an older dog so that we still have one when the other leaves us. Raising puppies is a great way to pay it forward.” 16

WITH A BACKGROUND IN PUBLIC RELATIONS WITHIN THE FOOD INDUSTRY, STACEY ANTINE, MS, RDN, HAD A PROFESSIONAL CAREER PROMOTING THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MAINSTREAM CONSUMER FOODS. Then, one day while working on her Master’s degree at NYU, she came across some startling data on obesity in children. “There was a quote presented in my class stating that this is the first generation of children who will not outlive their parents based on lifestyle,” says Stacey. It struck her that perhaps going back to corporate life was no longer the right move, and HealthBarn USA sprung to life. “My mission is to use education to empower kids and adults on how to live a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to create an experience for kids to grow their own food and learn to love foods straight from the garden. I wanted to provide an opportunity for them to cook garden-fresh produce and understand why it is so nutritious.” HealthBarn USA is an educational program that teaches nutrition, cooking, and gardening in a

Keeping it Green
This year, HealthBarn USA will also be offering virtual summer camps that are perfect for kids too young to manage social distancing and mask policies. Recent virtual classes have had participants from Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, and Ohio as well as New Jersey. Many times, children introduce their pets on the call--who love the leftovers, by the way! (Check out our website to see a video). “One of the few benefits we have seen during quarantine is that families now have the time to sit down and enjoy a nutritious meal together,” says Stacey. “Hopefully, we are all developing healthier eating habits. With coronavirus, everyone hit the pause button, and we’ve realized that healthy behaviors are more important than ever. During COVID, vulnerable populations had lost their lives; some due to compromised immune systems. Their bodies couldn’t fight back. I feel even more passionate about this than ever before. Good nutrition is so important for our children. It’s a bigger mission now,” says Stacey. healthbarnusa.com @healthbarnusa 22

Director of Unity Bank says, “We spend so much time preparing kids for college but we often neglect to prepare them for handling their finances as adults. Kids who learn how to save and manage their finances now will be better equipped moving on into adulthood.” It’s important to begin by keeping the concepts simple, especially for pre-school children. Refer to budgeting as “saving,” and focus on having your child divide their money into categories of “spend, save, and share.” An allowance can also help instill foundational habits that will have lasting financial benefits,” says Crystal. “It should be tied to specific chores or jobs with different amounts associated with each task. At the end of the week, have a quick meeting to review their efforts and pay them for their work. This will also help to instill a good work ethic.” Financial education should be a collaborative effort and parents should be active

DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE AN INTEREST IN MEDICINE? I was always drawn to the sciences. When I was younger, I thought I may want to be a veterinarian, but I am going to take the pre-med track. I really enjoy biology and psychology. At 17 years old, it’s a little overwhelming to think about med school, specializations, and residencies. I am looking forward to exploring different fields and learning about different areas of medicine while I am in college. HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU BEGAN TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19? It was worrying when I first heard about it. There was so much that people didn’t know. On one side, it didn’t sound as bad as some other diseases I had learned about. For example, Ebola’s mortality rate is much higher. Initially, I was hopeful that it wasn’t going to be that harmful. Unfortunately, it is so contagious that it overwhelmed the hospital systems and we lost so many people. This doesn’t usually happen in the US, but I learned that this can be endemic in developing countries with diseases like cholera. These countries don’t have the resources to manage health emergencies and most are lacking proper sanitation. We’re very fortunate to have the means in this country to deal with infectious diseases when they arise. IS THERE ANY GOOD NEWS? A lot of scientific research can be done in order to discover how to best treat these diseases. I believe we’ve come so far with COVID-19 already. I’m confident that researchers will find amazing breakthroughs and treatments in the near future.
“I’M CONFIDENT THAT RESEARCHERS WILL FIND AMAZING BREAKTHROUGHS AND TREATMENTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.”

INCREASINGLY POPULAR AS A WAY FOR OWNERS TO SHOWCASE THEIR BELOVED ANIMALS. #BergenCountyPets has hundreds of posts, from those of perfectly posed pitbulls to fluffy Persians. @Specstreks chronicles the life of Specs, a miniature pinscher chihuahua from Saddle River that can always be found in the comfiest spot in his house. Specs’ owner started the account as a way to avoid flooding their friends’ feeds with his photos on their personal accounts, but now has regular users commenting on Specs’ posts and messaging for advice on dog training. @PixienPudge follows the adventures of Pixie and her little brother Pudge, both golden retrievers living in Ridgewood, and their owner uses the page to show off the pair. Pet businesses like Groomington Coat Factory in Midland Park use Instagram to show off their adorable clients and advertise their services. Their page, @Groomington, showcases dogs of all breeds, before and after their haircuts!
