photo inspiration, and all-around glamour can be found everywhere in our great city. It was such a treat to have this month’s cover shoot at HUESTONE in River Oaks District. Artist James Glassman created the art installation consisting of 32 colored panels, each named after a distinct part of Houston’s heritage and subculture (on display until September 20). Of course, what made it even more fabulous was this month’s ebullient cover model – Dominique Sachse, styled by Houston’s reigning fashionista, Chloe Dao. Spending a morning with these two and a photographer will add a little sparkle to anyone’s day, even while wearing a face mask (see photo above). It was no easy feat narrowing down the hottest trends for this fall season, but we are bringing you the absolute best. Although this September is not like any we have ever experienced, it is nice to take a break from the heaviness and peek at new trends, style tips, and even where to get a great meal.

ARTIST’S PALETTE
ART SCENE AMIDST HOUSTON’S BURGEONING COMMUNITY OF ARTISTS AND FASHION DESIGNERS, WE’VE CHOSEN THREE HOUSTON ARTISTS WHOSE WORK YOU NEED TO KNOW. ASK ANYONE WHAT HOUSTON IS KNOWN FOR AND SOME VARIATION OF OIL AND GAS, ENERGY, MEDICINE, AND FOOD WILL COME TO MIND. While all of those are true, Houston is also home to countless galleries, graffiti parks, street art murals, as well as a host of small businesses selling handmade jewelry or fashion, and Sawyer Yards, one of the largest working artist communities in the country. In order to better highlight this growing community, we have chosen three Houston artists whose work you need to know.
Jewelry designer, Rebecca Lankford
GEMS rebecca lankford
Rebecca Lankford’s career as a jewelry designer started out as a hobby
while working as a paralegal over two decades ago. After taking classes at Glassell School of Art, her hobby turned into a career, and custom jewelry design became Lankford’s passion. “When I started making jewelry, I was designing expansive collections and selling to boutiques across the country,” said the jewelry designer. “After I opened my retail store in 2015, my relationships with my clients grew, and I am now working on more specialized and one-of-a-kind pieces.” Lankford draws her inspiration from small things outdoors, as well as colors in the natural world that she can source in gemstones. She combines unexpected materials and reimagines pieces of jewelry that have been passed down or forgotten. “Everyone has pieces that have been tucked away in a drawer. Reimagining a piece of jewelry allows you to give them another life,” said Lankford. rebeccalankforddesigns.com

They started Hera Concept as a way to combine their Peruvian heritage with women empowerment. “Inner goddess in you” is the slogan of the brand, and it reinforces the concept that all women should feel powerful and gorgeous despite life’s chal-

lenges. The idea is to obtain a positive collective thinking to spread and recognize the inner strength that everybody has. Co-founder Alexandra says, “We have created the Inner Goddess Community to encourage people to share their testimonies of inner power towards challenging situations to inspire others.” With this idea of empowerment, the label constructs its patterns based on real women’s body types instead of using mannequins. This allows each piece to obtain the best possible silhouette for the different types of women’s bodies. Alexandra says, “We want our clients to feel gorgeous and want our clothing to enhance their natural silhouettes.” After one of the sisters underwent fertility problems, they became supporters of research into women’s infertility issues. The brand funds research into ovarian cryo-preservation at MD Anderson Cancer Center and is a member of The National Infertility Association. Hera Concept is also very involved with Peruvian women artisans by not only giving them sustainable jobs, but also by teaching them business strategies and how to grow their businesses. hera-concept.com

Artist Genie Mack
Native Houstonian Genie Mack’s pet portraits make even the prickliest person smile. Beautifully painted on square canvas, the portraits seem to capture the playfulness and personality of each animal. Mack graduated with a degree from TCU and began teaching at a private elementary school while working on her paintings at night. After realizing she was burnt out from working two full-time jobs, Mack decided to open her own business and become a full-time artist. Now with a studio in Sawyer Yards, Sabine Street Studios, she spends her time creating art and has cultivated quite a following - her pet portrait waiting list is booked into 2021. “Each animal has an imaginative personality, and it makes me so happy to interpret that individuality from brush to canvas,” said the artist. “I also love painting other animals and illustrating my travels and love for nature. I recently have been working in abstracts, as well. I think my use of color and brushwork is unique to me.” Mack primarily works from photos and realism isn’t something she strives for, instead choosing bright colors and trying to capture what pet owners love about their animals. “My favorite part of the whole process is seeing the reactions to my paintings.” geniemack.com

CHOE DAO FILLS US IN ON FACE MASKS, LEVELED UP LEISURE WEAR, AND WHAT KEEPS HER GOING. HOUSTON’S VETERAN FASHION DESIGNER, CHLOE DAO, HAS BEEN DOING MUCH MORE THAN SURVIVING THE PANDEMIC, SHE HAS BEEN THRIVING. Although many know her as the winner of Project Runway Season 2, Dao has been in the fashion world for nearly 30 years. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, she settled back into Houston to run her boutique Dao Chloe Dao (formerly known as Lot 8). The Houston fashion darling has kept her successful boutique going in the same Rice Village building for 20 years - a feat many national chains haven’t accomplished. Before the shutdown began or there was a surge in Houston, Dao saw the path ahead was going to be face masks. After witnessing the spike in cases Photo Credit: Charles Lin 14

in the northeast and worries about PPE shortages during the early days of the pandemic, she quickly emerged as one of the first designers to see face masks as both a necessity and a colorful accessory. “We have been fortunate because we started giving masks away really early in the pandemic. At first, I was just giving them away, but then I realized that I couldn’t give masks away forever, with payroll and trying to keep my employees on the schedule,” said the business owner. “So, I began selling the masks and since then, we have been doing ok.” The self-proclaimed problem solver scours the internet at night, looking for different ways to improve face masks. One of her early iterations was the antibacterial mask that is quick-drying, has UV protection, and is waterproof. “I had to search all over the country for that material because no one had it,” she says. “I have experimented with every shape and size there is. I only sell things that function well and that people will use.” Next up in Dao’s face mask designs was the best-selling Safely Sip mask with an unexposed slot that keeps its wearers protected while drinking from a straw. “For the past few months, I have turned into a mask designer versus a clothing designer,” laughs Dao. However, clothing design is never far from her mind and she is looking forward to creating a line of matching clothing and masks. Dao has also spent a lot of time thinking about her next collection of leisurewear. It will be in the same vein as Juicy Couture, but “much more updated,” stresses Dao. She is attracted to the simplicity of dressing well with fewer pieces and effortlessly combining fashion and comfort. Her goal is to focus on three pieces that will work together in the office and a night out on the town. When asked how she stays inspired season after season, Dao credits being her own boss and not answering to shareholders or a corporation. She has turned her boutique into a creative studio where she designs everything from the chandeliers to the decorative flowers when she is not working on a collection. “I take inspiration from everything,” said Dao. “For example, during Christmas, we built a 10-foot-high Santa Claus dressing room that people could step into.” It is so endearing to see someone who loves their job entirely, and as Houstonians, we are lucky not only to be able to wear what inspires her, but also to be on the front lines of what comes next for Chloe Dao.

ST YLE S O P H I S T I C AT E DOMINIQUE SACHSE TALKS ABOUT AUTHENTIC STYLE AND THE POWER OF A FRUGAL FASHION FIND.
AS A HOUSTONIAN, IT IS DIFFICULT TO REMEMBER WHEN LOCAL NEWS DIDN’T INCLUDE DOMINIQUE SACHSE. A committed member of the Houston news scene, Sachse has been a frequent guest in our living rooms and increasingly on our phones for nearly three decades. The news anchor, who has lived in Houston since the mid 1970’s, started as a traffic reporter in 1993. Within a year she made her way to the anchor desk and has been there ever since. Social media, specifically YouTube, has had an increasing role in Sachse’s appeal. Over 1.2 million followers tune in weekly for the hair, makeup, and wardrobe tips that she doles out on her channel. Like all of us, Sachse’s style has transformed over the years, and she has made her seemingly 18
River Oaks Lifestyle | September 2020
ARTICLE GABI DE LA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS SPICKS natural and sophisticated approach accessible to everyone. “My style is less trend and more underpinnings of class and sophistication. It’s not to say that I don’t like trends or try them, but I don’t do it as often as I did when I was younger,” says Sachse. “If I do incorporate a trend, I always make sure that the overall look is classy and sophisticated.” Sachse, a mother to one and a “bonus mom” to five children through her marriage to Nick Florescu, strives to be an authentic voice both on-air and through her social media channels. She is not afraid to talk about her favorite drug-store finds, the fact she shops resale, or her love of Rent the Runway. Her viewers have come to expect honest reviews and advice that cover a whole gamut of price points. “It is in my nature to find a good deal,” she says. “There are some nice higher-end products that I like, but there are also good drug store finds, and I think it is important to share that. If I can find something at the drug store that does the same thing as a higher-end product, then that is what I’m buying.” Very simple and easy “L.A. casual” is what Sachse labels her off-air style. She gravitates to jeans, cool sneakers, printed t-shirts and isn’t afraid to be seen out and about or on social media with little or no makeup. She credits the self-confidence of being over 50 for not caring what people think and says, “even when you think you’ve nailed it, someone will have an opinion.” Although Sachse has an endgame in mind for her time at the news desk, we don’t have to worry about missing her effervescent style. She is looking forward to expanding her voice and reach on YouTube and will continue to use her platform as a source of inspiration for other women. “There is value in taking care of yourself to be better for others in your life. There are many channels and avenues in that message, and I look forward to exploring that.”

CAROLINE HARPER KNAPP IS KNOWN FOR HER EFFORTLESS STYLE. Fashion, home décor, or mom-life – the category doesn’t seem to matter, she has mastered the art of styling a good photo. Knapp began her life as a street style blogger in 2011 while working in the fashion industry in New York. Her blog was comprised of stylish images taken by her, her husband, or local photographers. When her oldest child, Knox, was born, Knapp moved her family to Houston where the content on House of Harper took a more casual turn. “My fashion has become more casual and mom-friendly,” says the mom of three. “Compared to what I wore in New York City, there is more color in my wardrobe. I also have a lot more tablescapes, construction, and decorating ideas on my blog. My blog and Instagram content have always represented my lifestyle.” Coming off a three-month maternity leave after her daughter Millie’s birth, Knapp is eager to get back to creating. She recently met with a local photographer to talk about editorial and photography ideas. “I always try to be a resource of information,” she said. “There are two different series on my blog, Mom Crush and Talk Shop, where I interview other women who inspire me. I am working on content and trying to think about what people want or need for this time we are in.” Knapp is always eager to share what she knows, so we sat down to talk about four essential tips for a stylish wardrobe.

When space for their store, Clorinda Antinori, opened up in River Oaks Shopping Center, they took it and never looked back. All of the shoes at Clorinda Antinori are made in Tuscany by artisans at small family-owned factories. The brand's focus is on fit, style, and design; their business model strives to provide the best Italian product at an accessible price. "We are very devoted to how our shoes fit our customers. We spend endless hours working on the design and adjusting molds to have different widths so that customers can find the right fit for their foot," says Aransanez. "We don't believe in one size fits all, so we put a lot of energy into developing shoes that will accommodate our customers' needs. Our work is a labor of love and we are excited for Houston to get to know our brand." Â CityLifestyle.com/RiverOaks

Rooms Made Better by I n c r e d i b l e R u g s DAVID’S ORIENTAL RUGS HAS BEEN ONE OF HOUSTON’S PREMIERE RUG DEALERS FOR OVER FOUR DECADES. AS ONE OF THE LARGEST DIRECT IMPORTERS OF FINE RUGS IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA, DAVID ORIENTAL RUGS OFFERS KNOWLEDGEABLE SERVICE, IMPECCABLE VALUE, AND A VAST PRODUCT SELECTION DESIGNED TO FIT ANY CLIENT’S TASTE AND BUDGET. From decorative modern area rugs and designer-quality Oushak rugs to circular Tabriz rugs and handmade Persian Hamedan runners, the possibilities are endless. The independently owned and operated business also offers same day delivery and shipping within the contiguous United States. “Honesty and integrity is our only policy,” said owner David Shahab, who established the company in the early 1980s as a supplier for a local antique gallery and auction house. After nearly four decades of success, David decided to move his showroom to a much larger space, where he expanded not only his rug business but also his real estate business. He purchased the well-known shopping center located on Fondren near the Houston Galleria, named the David Oriental Rugs Center. Since, David Oriental Rugs has become the highest-rated rug company in the city, boasting multiple Gold Star Awards and a Certificate of Excellence Award for the last 19 consecutive years from the Better Business Bureau. David also decided to expand his team with the addition of his youngest nephew, Mahan Azar, who now has a more substantial role in carrying on the responsibilities of this well-established Houston business. Together they hope to continue their success and further expand their business in the wholesale, retail, import/export, and real estate industries. Alongside the wholesaler’s ever-changing inventory, the store also offers professional cleaning, appraisal services for insurance and estate purposes, as well as restoration due to tearing, moth damage, fraying, and unraveled fringes.
