STICK TO YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION With the beginning of a New Year, we have a blank slate to get healthy, learn new things or stop bad habits. The problem is sticking to our new routines the further we get into the new year. Here are some tips to help you on your way. Start small and change one thing at the time. Don’t try and change everything on January 1st. Take small steps towards the goal and celebrate every step. Write down your

goal and successes on sticky notes and leave them where you can see them everyday. Share your goals with friends and family so they can cheer you on and support you when it gets tough. If you take a few steps back, don’t beat yourself up, simply dust yourself off and keep walking towards your goal. They say it takes 21 days to change a habit, so that means by January 22nd it will be much easier to stick with your resolution!

DOG FRIENDLY COLD WINTER TIPS We often talk about not leaving dogs in cars when it is warm outside, but the same goes for

pet at home. If your dog has short hair, consider buying a coat. There are models for all sizes of dogs available. It will help your pet be comfortable when outside. You might want to consider investing in doggie boots as well. Your pet might not like it, but it will prevent snow and ice from sticking to its paws and drying them out. It will also protect against irritating snow melt salts and sand. You can whip up pet-safe ice-melt at home. Add 6 cups of dish soap and 2 oz. rubbing alcohol to ½ gallon of warm water. Pour the liquid over icy patches. You can also look for ice melt salt designed to be safe for your pet at your local store.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS With the holidays over, we all tend to get busy with our own lives. January is a good month to

spread some kindness to your neighbors. Surprise a neighbor by bringing in their trash can or shoveling their driveway. You will be surprised at how little things can brighten someone’s day. Hand write a card to say thank you. Now that everything is email, a handwritten card will be cherished. Leave little sticky notes of encouragement in library books, on a restroom mirror or in someone’s locker. You never know how this will inspire others to carry forward kindness. catching up with friends is worth slowing down for. Instead of looking for negativity online, leave a positive comment and remind others of the good in the world. Remember “Be kind. Everyone’s fighting a battle you know nothing about.”

SNOW EMERGENCY PROCEDURES When it snows, Eden Prairie maintenance crews clear 233 miles of City streets plus arterial sidewalks and trails. Residents can help by shoveling around hydrants and mailboxes and by clearing the sidewalks in front of their homes. Remember that it is illegal to place snow on a public roadway. F o l low Yo u r D r e a m AS THE MARKET LEADER IN HEALTHY LIVING, THE LIFE TIME BRAND CHAMPIONS A HEALTHY WAY OF LIFE. Through its national network of Life Time Living and Life Time Work spaces, the Company is going beyond fitness to encompass the entire spectrum of daily life for individuals, couples and families. And it started with a single dream. Bahram Akradi arrived in the United States from Iran as a 17-year old immigrant. To help pay for college, he began cleaning the swimming pool at a nationally known health club. Taking on more responsibility, he quickly rose through the ranks and by the time he graduated college, Akradi became the chain’s top salesman. “I had worked in clubs,” he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune in a 2003 profile, “They were dingy, smelly places. They were like torture chambers. And they forced you into contracts. It wasn’t built from a customer perspective.” Akradi’s early dream was to create a better fitness experience. Using his personal assets, and after finding financial backing, he turned that dream into a reality and opened his first Lifetime in 1992. One of the key people who helped Bahram build his dream was Efonda Sproles, Chief Talent Scout, who says Bahram once told him “We will change the world through fitness”, as he was crystalizing his vision. Fast forward to today, and it looks like that vision has come true. Life Time is the nation’s largest fitness resort company focused on the premier end of the market. Not bad for a kid with a dream. “One of the most rewarding things about working at Life Time is knowing how much we give back to the community”, tells Sproles. He’s right, since 2013, the Life Time Foundation has donated over 44 million meals to school districts across the country and also supports local and national charities like the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This type of generosity does not go unnoticed. There have been many awards for Life Time and Akradi was recently rec-

There will likely be more awards as Life Time’s influence continues to grow beyond its walls, building lifestyle communities that intermingle destination resort-style fitness clubs with Life Time Work co-op or shared work spaces and luxury apartments through Life Time Living. 12

If you dread working out, but love dancing, check out the Zumba classes at Eden Prairie Community Center. Zumba is a group fitness class combining high and low intensity moves for an interval style work out. The moves are simple and easy to follow which makes the class easy and fun. The music draws from Latin or Bollywood mostly with about 30% from other genres. The base steps in Zumba come from Merengue, salsa, cumbia and Reggie tone. If that sounds intimidating, don’t worry. Megan Munoz, Recreational Supervisor for Fitness, started at the community center as a Zumba instructor and advises, “No one is looking at you, they are all looking at the instructor, so don’t worry about the steps and just have fun.” In any given week at the community center, you can choose from 16 Zumba classes given by 10 different instructors for a different dance party every night. To keep it fresh, instructors get new music from Zumba every other month and will research new moves to keep it fresh. “The second time is always easier, so make Zumba or other classes a regular in your fitness schedule”, says Megan Munoz. If you are looking for friendly competition, consider joining a league sport. Not only is this a great way to get fit, it is also a wonderful way to get to know new friends. The Eden Prairie Community Center offers leagues for basketball, bocce ball, broomball, flag football, pickleball, racquet ball, soft ball, yard ball and volleyball Depending on time of year). You can sign up as a free agent and teams that need extra players will welcome you to their team. www.EdenPrairie.org/AdultAthletics. We all know that working out is good for the body, but had you considered what it can do for your mind? Exercise has been shown to increase brain activity and smiling releases endorphins, creating a feeling of wellbeing. The next time you are stressed, give your brain a break and join a group fitness class and make some new friends. Says Munoz, “Members come in to get fit but stays for the relationships they make”.

FUN WORKOUTS

Water aerobics is another fun way to get your heart pumping. The water creates resistance to work your muscles while there is no hard impact on your joints. Participants are working in shallow or deep water while performing exercises.

Barre class is a hybrid class that has elements from ballet, Yoga, Pilates and strength training. Small moves target your whole body and it is not uncommon to hear people say things like, “I feel taller” and “I didn’t know I had that muscle”, after a class. There’s no requirement to be a ballerina to take this class.

Getting your aggression out safely is easy in a Gloves and Pads class. Participants are paired up for 3 minute “rounds” where one person is holding pads and one person is hitting the pads. You might think 3 minutes is easy, but boxing involves your whole body and quickly brings your heart rate up. All moves are rehearsed for a fun and safe workout

TRX is suspension training that uses body weight to develop strength, balance, flexibility and joint stability. It is appropriate for all levels of fitness and it is easy to adjust for higher or lower intensity. TRX will work your whole body. January 2020 | Eden Prairie Lifestyle

A FEW STEPS OUTSIDE THE AIRPORT DOORS, YOU NOTICE SOMETHING IS MISSING. Under a sundrenched sky, the thought comes to mind that the chill in your bones is finally gone. With blue skies and warm sand beaches, Cancun is just what the doctor ordered to combat your winter blues. Quite a few Minnesota doctors give out the same prescription. Cancun is the top international travel destination for Minnesotan’s escaping the cold. Direct flights from the Twin Cities make Cancun easily accessible and a strong dollar make the vacation highly affordable. Once in Cancun, you will never want for things to do. Boutiques and bazaars provide world-class shopping. Dining options will please your palate, with everything from 5 star fine dining to tasty street eats. Tennis, golf and many other activities are everywhere, or relax on one of the fine, white sand beaches. All of these possibilities are right outside your door.

TRAVEL DESTINATION

(CON TI N U ED)

GETTING TO KNOW CANCUN Most travelers stay in the comfort and safety of the Hotel Zone. Shaped like the number 7, the top of the 7 is the North, with the Middle and the South making up the right-hand side of the 7. The ‘Zona Hoterlera’, as the locals call it, is a 14 mile-long island filled with shops, opportunities to explore, places to eat and – of course hotels. There’s so much to do in the Hotel Zone that most tourists never leave the area. THE NORTH Thanks to geography, The North (The “beginning”) has the softest sand and most pristine beaches. Partially protected from hurricanes by Isla Mujeres and the horn of Punta Cancun, the North is also shielded from the seaweed that tends to collect in the Middle and End Zones. This is the closest portion to Downtown’s restaurants and cultural attractions, and is only a short distance from Cancun’s nightlife. With such proximity to dining, bars, and attractions, the Beginning of the Hotel Zone is ideal for guests who opt not to stay in an all-inclusive. THE MIDDLE The Middle is where you will find the action. Uptown Cancun can be found in the Middle, with its famous nightlife. Follow the main drag south and you’ll find Cancun’s most popular family attractions close by, including Aquaworld, Museo Maya, and MUSA, the underwater museum, with a nesting spot for local sea turtles! Huge turtles come ashore every night to lay eggs from May through October. Baby turtles hatch and are released to the ocean from July through December. Guests are invited to watch the adult turtles making their nests every night, or to watch as the babies are released later in the season. THE SOUTH The South, referred to as “the End,” begins at the El Rey Ruins and ends at Punta Nizuc. Quieter than the North or Middle, it is still 22

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | January 2020

highly accessible to all that Cancun has to offer. Here travelers find the most relaxed beaches with fewer vendors interrupting their tranquil moments. Beach quality is similar to the Middle, with moderate surf, soft white sand (though slightly coarser than that of the North), and lots of sea turtle activity. There is generally better snorkeling in the South Hotel Zone. Most resorts in this area are all-inclusive, as the immediate area only has a handful of restaurants. This is an ideal spot for travelers who want a true getaway. WHERE TO STAY IN THE NORTH

SNOWY DAYS, WHAT BETTER WAY TO GET THE MOST OUT OF WINTER THAN GET OUTSIDE AND HAVE AN ADVENTURE? Luckily, Minnesotans don’t have to go far to find fun in the snow. Here are a few places close by that offer exciting thrills for adults and families. CROSS COUNTRY AT HYLAND LAKE PARK RESERVE Stretch your legs and head out to Hyland Lake Park Reserve for night cross-country skiing. Feel the crisp, cold snow under your feet and breeze through the cool air as you explore the various trails under the stars. Whether you are learning to ski or looking to get outside and enjoy winter, skiing at night is for all ages and skill levels. Hyland Park offers nine and a half miles of groomed trails and fivepoint three miles of lighted trails to explore. “Skiing under the stars can provide a true sense of peace, tranquility, and perspective” says Tyler Thompson, Three Rivers Parks Outdoor Recreation

SNOWSHOE AT MURPHY-HANRAHAN PARK RESERVE Although it’s cold outside, just bundle up to visit the Murphy-Hanrahan Park Reserve, which has just what you need to enjoy the scenes of Minnesota winter. Click your boots into a pair of snowshoes and trek through fluffy, snow covered glacial ridges, hilly terrains and lush forest.

“Skiing under the stars can provide a true sense of peace, tranquility, and perspective.” Murphy is truly a natural and often undiscovered gem in Three Rivers Park District and the metro region. The terrain is vast, diverse and remote. The park is designated by the National Audubon Society as an important bird area, a popular place for avid birdwatchers. If you prefer some help, on January 26, Three Rivers Parks will host a snowshoeing program. They will teach the snowshoeing basics and allow the public to explore the various trails. “With nearly 6 miles of trails to explore by snowshoe, one can cover a wide range of terrain in the park while encountering wildlife with the possibility of never seeing another park user. One may explore the prairie, hardwood forest, and glacial ridges over the hilly terrain,” states Thompson. Registration is required and cost is $5. The program runs from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm. Three Rivers Parks offers a wide variety of public snowshoeing trails, which can be found on their website http://www.ThreeRiversParks.org or you can call 763-559-6700 for more information. Fun winter adventures await you and are closer than you think! So, go outside and have some fun!

NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever your mood is this time of year, there’s still an activity you can do that’s worthwhile—and will give you a boost! Here’s how to choose the right one.

YO G A A regular yoga practice can help to ease anxiety by increasing body awareness, reducing muscle tension, relieving stress

and sharpening attention + concentration.

01 R AG D O L L Ragdoll pose is great for relaxation and to release tension. Stand tall + reach your arms up, then allow them to fall gently toward the floor as you bend down.

02 C H I L D ’ S P O S E This calming and restorative pose is a common beginner’s position. Starting from your knees, sit back on your heels then walk your arms forward, bringing your torso down until you can rest your forehead on the floor.

03 S AVA S A N A Relax one body part at a time, one muscle at a time + one thought at a time through a daily Savasana practice.

FEELING BORED

CLIMBING When you feel like you’re in a rut with your workouts and just don’t feel motivated anymore, try something new and exciting! Rock climbing is a great way to introduce something different without it feeling like a workout.

01 C L I M B I N G GYM S Climbing gyms have been popping up everywhere as the sport becomes more mainstream + are a great option for those who prefer to be adventurous indoors.

02 B O U L D E R I N G Bouldering, great for developing power, is a type of rock climbing where the climber doesn’t use ropes or harnesses, generally done on a much smaller scale.

03 S H A P E U P Since climbing can use different muscles from traditional workouts, it’s important to keep up with strengthening those. Key areas to pay attention to include upper body, lower body, core, fingers and wrists.

RUNNING There’s a reason people who are active runners describe something called a “runner’s high.” Studies show that aerobic exercises release

mood-boosting endorphins.

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.
