weather and the changing of the leaves. This year has brought about many changes in not only our community but in the entire world. With a pandemic that sent us into isolation and changed the way we socialize daily. With the coming changes of yet another season...my hope is that we can settle into Fall with a sense of renewed peace and allow joy to fill our homes and businesses as we are thankful for what we have learned through all that we have walked through already this year.

Lifting Burdens to Add Color BE A STORY LISTENER

―EMILIE BARNES

Let’s unload that! A load is burdensome and bleak. Basically, absent of color. Here are several ways you can start today adding color into someone else’s life. BENDING DOWN | YUP, LITERALLY BENDING DOWN. When someone is carrying a load of burdens, it is heavy and daunting. The best thing you can do to lighten that

and concern. You actually are offering to carry even more weight by now hearing the load and showing acceptance towards the story being told. Not taking on the burden, simply being a story listener—a powerful place to be! GOING THE DISTANCE | MAKING THE COMMITMENT TO SEE IT THROUGH. Have you ever had someone hear your “stuff,” then you never hear from them again? You are left feeling pretty down and regretful for sharing. To add color into someone else’s life, we must go the distance with them. It’s an investment and commitment to see it through. We can’t take on everyone’s load or we would then be loaded down ourselves and depleted of color. Right? Prepare yourself for this commitment. If you know you can’t Bend Down, Listen and Go The Distance, then be kind enough to wait until you truly are available. A smile is the essence of watching color come back into someone else’s life. Once we have bent down, listened and gone the distance, we then see the miracle of happiness explode. It’s a beautiful picture of love and hope. I leave you with a challenge. Try adding color into someone else’s life this week. Bend down inside their pain and lift the heaviness. Offer to listen to their story. Above all, go the distance with a commitment to see them through towards a lightened load. Incredibly you will see that color has been added to your life too.

ROAD TRIP

Epic Tr a v e l T i p s ‘FAB FIVE CHICKS’ SHARE HOW TO STILL CARVE OUT FRIENDSHIPS WHILE PARENTING AMONG ACTIVE MARRIAGES

ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

24

Frisco Life | October 2020

FIVE FEMALE AMIGOS FROM THE FRISCO/PROSPER AREA, WHO’VE BEEN FRIENDS FOR 20 YEARS, ARE DOCUMENTING THEIR LIFE JOURNEYS WHILE PUBLICLY SHARING THEIR VIEWS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS AND “THE REAL STRUGGLES OF THIS THING WE CALL THE MOM LIFE!” These mommas claim to be experts on besties’ trips and friendship fun, and they pledge to keep discussing topics other than those just about the 12 children among them. Monica Pittenger, Kellie Matijasevic, Tammine Mercer, Jill McMillan and Jenny Dean know how important it is to have time away with friends. After all, they all knew each other before kids, husbands and careers, so Monica confides that it’s nice to get together and just “be.” Indeed, Tammine and Jill have been friends since eighth grade, so they’ve perfected how to “be together,” too. All of them attended college together at Texas Tech. Jenny and Jill are sisters, with Jenny being 18 months younger. “We joked for the longest time that Jenny was our mascot, but she has been around since college, and she feels like a sister to all of us now,” explains Monica. All five of these women have professions, so they are straightforward and candid about pinpointing the challenges of having competing primary concerns. “A good balance comes from having friends and making them one of your priorities,” says Jill. They admit finding time to hang out together without their individual families is challenging, and that planning once-a-month meals out is crucial, so they can accommodate the ebbs and flows of their schedules. They enlist each other as sounding boards and say it avoids ever feeling alone to face the world. How do their husbands feel about this? The women say the men are supportive, even getting sad when they aren’t invited. In fact, their spouses started their own Instagram but forgot the password to it, so have a hard time keeping up with the antics of their wives, who now have quite a social media following. And when they’re in bad moods, their husbands say: “Go call the girls.”

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)

“Kids are all-consuming, but sometimes we need to recharge. That’s why we plan our trips a year in advance, so that weekend is booked and scheduled around,” says Monica. They admit they sometimes get “mom shamed” online by a few other women because they are spending time with each other rather than with their kids. But, their viewpoint is that couples should “parent” together, so it’s not “babysitting when fathers take turns” with the children. Likewise about finding time to be just married couples and having date nights. Four of The Fab Five turned 40 years old last year, so they included their husbands in all the celebrations. While they concede that striking a balance between being loving spouses, caring mothers and good friends can seem overwhelming, it’s all about determining priorities and following through with them. Girls’ trips are good for one’s health in that they release happy hormones. One study published in Behaviour found that hanging out with friends to nurture “peaceful associations” can help release oxytocin, a neurotransmitter known as the love or trust hormone. More oxytocin is released when with friends, which can make one feel more happy, trusting, generous and friendly overall.

Frisco Life | October 2020

TOP 5 TIPS

from fab five chicks for planning a fun girls’ trip

1.

DATE: Pick a date early, at least six months in advance if possible. Planning around the birthdays of our 12 children and husbands can be very difficult. If you add in anniversaries and preplanned family trips, there are not many weekends left.

2.

LOCATION: Once the date is picked, pick a location. We have a bucket list of places we want to go, and we usually pick a place from our list. We also decide on the next trip location during a girls’ trip, that way we can really talk it out and figure out what is best for our group.

3.

CREW: Keep your crew in mind when planning the trip. If someone in your group is pregnant, going to Napa is not the best destination.

4.

ACTIVITIES: Do something memorable each trip; it can be small like visiting a famous restaurant or something big like a concert, or be adventurous and go zip lining.

5.

HAVE GRACE: Remember, the most important part of the trip is to reconnect with your friends and make some memories. The little things, like where to go for dinner or what hotel to stay in are not that important. (Unless the hotel has an amazing pool or spa, of course!) Be real. Be you! Have fun. BONUS TRIP TIP: They love to take little items for each other, such as matching cups, hats, pajamas, makeup bags, or even sweatshirts for the plane rides home. CityLifestyle.com/Frisco

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

DIY (CONTINUED)

+

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

+

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.

+

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

Corners of the Heart KEEP LIVING

GLAMOROUS HIPPE, SHARES A CORNER OF HER HEART IN THIS MONTH’S FRISCO LIFE, REMINDING US TO KEEP LIVING AND MOVING FORWARD THROUGH EACH SEASON OF LIFE. “FILL A SPACE IN A BEAUTIFUL WAY” - GEORGIA O’ KEEFE The fall season is upon us, but because of the world’s changes, so much of the season seems different, but is it really? Fall is a beautiful time when the leaves turn, the kiddos are back in school, and a chill accompanies the air. It’s also when nature takes time to cleanse itself of the old in preparation for the new. We also go through seasons in life because we shed, go into ourselves, and grow new pieces. It’s normal to try and process things and make them fit into what we recognize, but we must resist the fear to hold onto what’s gone. Like some of you, I’ve lost family members during this time, and in a span of four months, three have left my side. The traditional ceremonies created to help offer closure weren’t permitted due to COVID-19; therefore, processing has taken on a new shape. My grandmother, who lived a beautiful 88 years, passed away right in my home, and just knowing that I turned the corner and she departed was tough to swallow. She was a warrior, born during the Great Depression, survived the Civil Rights era, was a wife, and mothered eight children. I’m sure you can imagine that life gave her some sunshine and rain. When I seemed hurt or surprised by life, she would say, “Keep living.” I used to think she was giving me a warning, but now I understand she meant to inspire me. She was saying that no matter what comes, I had to keep going forward. She was telling me that no matter what the seasons of my life would bring, if I opened up the corners of my heart, then there would always be love to share, dreams to dream, plans to make, and hope for better days.
