I was lucky enough to grow up having the most supportive parents, but my father, the eternal optimist and always there to try to make you laugh, was especially remarkable. After my mom’s passing two years ago, my Dad and I made the decision for him to sell their condo in Maryland and move to be near us in Atlanta. My (college-aged) kids and I couldn’t have been happier. After a bit of skepticism, my Dad happily chose a beautiful retirement community about a mile from our home and has been here nearly a year. He is so happy where he has landed, with new friends, doing daily exercise classes and of course, keeping all the other inmates (as he likes to call them) cracking up, with his jokes and one-liners. In a few short years, he will be 90 (Dad, sorry for publishing your age, but I am so

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that as a kid growing up I hated all his joking around and kibitzing (as he liked to call it), but now that I am the age I am, I appreciate who he is and all his kidding. Turns out everyone likes him and looks forward to his jokes. Who knew? Wishing all the Dads (funny or not) out there a happy Father’s Day.

Home searches, document signing can be done online and negotiations can take place over the phone. Luckily in today's fast-moving market, properties can be sold with limited public events like open houses and alternative marketing practices for our listings, such as our continued use of video tours and virtual VIP tours. REMEMBERING DAD WE SAT DOWN (VIRTUALLY, OF COURSE) WITH TWO MEN IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO WORK TIRELESSLY TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. We think they are worth a round of applause. Join us, this month, in saluting the guys. 1. Tell us about one or two men who inspired you during your life and career. 2. How do you blow off steam and relax? 3. Giving back is very important to us at Perimeter North Lifestyle magazine. How do you give back your time and/or resources? 4. We pray that by the time this June issue hits mailboxes, we will all be out and about. Where will you go for a special dinner in our community?

M I C H A E L C O WA N + E xecutive Direc tor, Dunwoody Nature Center 1. As an avid lover of history, I’ve always drawn inspiration from historical figures and my favorites have always been George Washington and Ronald Reagan. I feel they both appealed to our best hopes and not our worst fears—very different from most political leaders today. 2. I love hiking and backpacking but don’t get to do it as much as I would like—I can get my family to hike with me sometimes, but not camp. I really like to be deep in nature where you are far enough from a road that few people every go. At home, I love to work on a jigsaw puzzle, while listening to a good audiobook and sipping some nice whiskey. 3. While I give to several causes, I spend time volunteering for ones where I can have a direct impact by interacting with others. From Scouting, where I can hopefully instill a love and respect for nature in young adults to visiting the homebound senior citizens for my church where I spend time just talking to them. 4. There are so many good places that I want to go to again! We are really lucky to have so many good restaurants is Dunwoody. We want to go back to the new Mexican place Los Hermanos—we were there the night before everything shut down. Its always a treat to go to Carbonara Trattoria or McKendricks too. 14

KEN ANDERSON, MD 1. The first influential man in my life is my father Michael Anderson (pictured above with me), who showed me how to succeed in life, and gave me the work ethic to achieve my goals. The second is Dr. Christopher Post, my mentor in medical school, who showed me how to really make a difference in medicine. His mentorship ultimately inspired me to create the American Academy of Hair Restoration Surgery, where we aim to elevate the specialty through education. 2. In the summer I enjoy boating and wake surfing on Lake Lanier. If it’s nice I’ll take my motorcycle into the north Georgia mountains or to Savannah for the weekend. In the mornings, I’m in the home gym, so I get a lot of stress out before the day even starts. When I’m feeling creative I’ll work on my decade-long photography project that focuses on American automobiles. 3. For the Curing Kids Cancer Cabaret last fall, I volunteered to be an on-stage performer, doing my best Joan Jett impression, guitar and all. I established the Michael Anderson Resident Research Fund at the University of Michigan to fund basic science research into cancer, named after my dad. I also give to 14 separate charities nearby. 4. The best Mexican is at Hacienda Bar & Grill on Windward. The next celebration will be over a brick-oven pizza at Campania on North Main. then to Rumi’s Kitchen at the Avalon.

Bill Bulpitt, right, belongs to three Sunbeam clubs – CAT (California Association of Tiger Owners ) in Los Angeles, the Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association

AFTER MEETING IN 1975, FRANK PINNER AND BILL BULPITT FORMED A FRIENDSHIP OVER ORGANIZING GATHERINGS WITH FELLOW SUNBEAM TIGER OWNERS. This tight-knit group of drivers collected the high-performance V8 version of the British Rootes Group’s Sunbeam Alpine roadster, designed in part by American car designer and racing driver Carroll Shelby and produced from 1964 until 1967. Bulpitt, of Sandy Springs attends Caffeine and Octane and we met him one sunny afternoon earlier in the year where he shared the story of his Sunbeams. A minor fender bender in 1976 resulted in Frank having his entire car rebuilt, complete with traction masters, a roll bar, and a new dashboard to include 12 instruments (as a helicopter pilot, Frank wanted to have every indication of what was going on under the hood.) His Mark II also received an updated paint job—from basic white to bright yellow. Frank headed to Tehran on assignment in 1977, but upon his return he couldn’t wait to get back behind the wheel. The following years were filled with Tigers United and Road Atlanta excursions with his young sons. Sadly, in 1997, after a fivemonth battle, Frank passed from cancer, a result of being exposed to Agent Orange during his tour in Vietnam. Over a decade later, Frank’s widow Karen reached out to Bill, offering to sell him the car that started their friendship. It was a challenge to get the car running again (it had been parked

wet, with fuel in the tanks and water in the engine,) but in 2012, Bill proudly gave Karen her first ride in the car in 20 years. You can catch Bill chatting about his Tigers any chance he gets because “as time has gone on they have become more and more rare, and many younger people really have never heard of them, so it is fun to tell the story of how they came about. My red one was actually signed by Carroll Shelby (at Road Atlanta) so that is always fun to point out.” He has been attending Caffeine and Octane since it was held in East Cobb at the Avenues and is also “Frank was a good friend and we had a lot of fun with these cars. I think about him every time I drive it and hope to be a worthy custodian.” CityLifestyle.com/PerimeterNorth

Like The Living Room or his earlier independent musical adventure, The Sweet Tea Project, Ed Roland is always up for reinventing himself through his music. Different than Collective Soul, The Sweet Tea Project is a more American sounding band that includes a banjo and trumpet. One of the greatest keys to success is to love what you do. “This is going to sound weird,” says Roland, “but, we love each other. Every night, before we go on, we are high fiving each other, and it is just the joy, it is just that moment, to be with those guys, and to know that people will appreciate what we do. BEING AT HOME “When I come home from traveling I really do not want to go that far from home. I have everything I need within three miles of my house. After renting in Sandy Springs for a year, Ed and his wife Michaeline found their current house and began the process of personalizing their new home. “You know (living in Sandy Springs) puts me at ease and I can actually enjoy my home.” Home and family are incredibly important. “ A lot of our dear friends all live here and we are all neighbors. And, my wife Michaeline created this for me, it is amazing.” “My wife called me a creature of habit, and I have found my spots! When I am home very rarely will I venture outside of Sandy Springs.

“If I want my pie, I go to Hearths Pizza Tavern- I love Breadwinner. There is Brooklyn Café and Clay’s Sports Café for wings,” says Roland. But, if there is something to celebrate, Kaiser’s Chophouse is at top of his list, a classic American chophouse. “When I am home I take my boys to Kaiser’s. YOU TAKEN ON TO HELP YOUR FAMILY? A: My Dad says I’ve been a big help, I’ve just tried to help out whenever they ask me like laying down mulch, helping with the laundry, and whatever chores need to be done. Q: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED THE PAST FEW MONTHS? A: My mom helped me make my own small tennis court with a net on our driveway, so I’ve gotten better at tennis and I play basketball for a couple hours every day, even by myself. I also built a fire-pit in our back yard. Q: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED THE PAST FEW MONTHS? A: I Facetime with my grandparents every day, because it makes them happy and they have to stay inside. Learning about my grandparents and family history has been cool. My Granny Janette taught me what it was like to live as a kid through WW2 in Scotland and all about the war. And my Grandpa in Michigan reads huge 500 page books with me over video. My Granma taught me music and I can play the ukulele! GIVING BACK

FAT H E R S I N C O R P O R AT E D MEET THE FOUNDER

DUNWOODY-BASED FATHERS INCORPORATED’S FOUNDER, KENNETH BRASWELL BRINGS 30 YEARS OF COLLECTIVE WORK EXPERIENCE MANAGING AND LEADING FATHERHOOD AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS ADVOCATING FOR FATHER RIGHTS AND STRENGTHENING THE BOND BETWEEN FATHERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. TELL US ABOUT ONE OR TWO MEN WHO INSPIRED YOU DURING YOUR LIFE AND CAREER. I was inspired by two men who help develop both my awareness of my gifts and responsibility to serve. Dr. Jack Conway was my boss in my early professional years and a cultural anthropologist. He helped me understand the importance of being aware of my history and worth in society. He also inspired my love for writing. Art Mitchell was a jack of all trades. He pushed me in my early years to exceed in excellence and pushing all of my gifts to the limits. HOW DO YOU BLOW OFF STEAM AND RELAX? During this time most of my relaxation is engaging in my creativity of writing. I just completed a children’s graphic novel and beginning to prepare it in the hopes of finding a publisher. It would be my fifth children’s book. Outside of that, binge-watching Cheers, Seinfeld and The Office for the hundredth time. GIVING BACK IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US AT PERIMETER LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK YOUR TIME AND/OR RESOURCES? My entire life is consumed by trying to engage in ways to give back, not only to communities in need but lately on mentoring young people of color in building their organizations and business. My wife and I just completed a certification in becoming Master Life Coaches and plan to use that in helping individuals in the areas of fatherhood, family, finances and legacy building through entrepreneurship. WE PRAY THAT BY THE TIME THIS JUNE ISSUE HITS MAILBOXES, WE WILL ALL BE OUT AND ABOUT. WHERE WILL YOU GO FOR A SPECIAL DINNER IN SANDY SPRINGS/DUNWOODY AREA? I and my family are looking forward to having a nice, big juicy steak. It will be hard to choose from because we all have different favorites. My children love Outback, my wife enjoys McKendrick and while I like them both, I’m looking forward to finally trying both Fogo de Chao and The Capital Grille. 34
