THE LIFE OF A HOMETOWN HERO
(CON TI N UED)
1.
“When he turned to God, I think that may be where he finally found his real, authentic faith, and from there he’s been doing the daily walk. He feels that responsibility to his family and fans, and to God,” Todd says. When Albert returned to Busch Stadium in 2011 for a three-game series, it was a major event! Dozens of his former Cardinals teammates and executives were on-hand to welcome him back with open arms.
4.
“It took some time for people to understand the details of the negotiation, but I don’t think anyone would have faulted Albert,” Todd says. “And now that time has passed, when he came back, it was such a wonderful reception for him. And even though Albert now plays for another team, he was saying, ‘St Louis fans are the best fans in baseball.’” The Pujols family may reside in Irvine, California, but they still have their second home right here in the community, and they will always call St. Louis home. “Never once has it ever even been mentioned to move his office or headquarters from St Louis because this has always been the heart of where we started,” Todd says. “I mean, there’s over a thousand families that we serve here. This is where the heart beats, from the foundation.” Todd says Albert’s greatness is so much more than anything you can put into a box score. “I think greatness really has to be put in the character, in the heart of somebody that genuinely cares about people in this community and in the Dominican Republic, and I think that more than anything else defines the man.” At 39 years old, and nearing the last part of his career, Albert Pujols is still hitting milestones both on and off the field. “There is no one who is doing what he’s doing at the level that he is doing it for as long as he’s been doing it.” Todd continues. “What he does with his foundation is equally as remarkable as what he does in baseball; for some reason, it’s just not as visible. You can talk to people in the Dominican Republic that have never seen a doctor, a dentist, or an optometrist until Albert brought them to them.” “I think if asked how he’d want to be remembered a hundred years from now, Albert would say he wants to be remembered as serving others,” Todd says. The O’ Night Divine Christmas Celebration Gala at the Ritz-Carlton will be held Dec. 17. This is the 15th year for the event. Tickets are limited. PujolsFamilyFoundation.org 32

How to Read More Books
ARTICLE EMILY MARTINEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY LIZ OLSON PHOTOGRAPHY
READING MORE BOOKS IS A GOAL I SET FOR MYSELF THIS YEAR. I have a habit of playing on my phone before bed, so I decided to start reading 10 pages a night. Here are five simple tips that have helped me with this goal! READ BOOKS THAT HELP YOU IMPROVE ON SOMETHING I am currently reading Can I Have Your Attention? It focuses on how to get things done in a constantly connected society. Whether you work in an office, or for yourself this is a must-read. Next on my list is The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self Discovery. If you’re not familiar with the Enneagram, it is a personality typing system that consists of nine different types. READ FOR FUN I
haven’t
actually
read
the Crazy
Rich
Asians books yet (despite what these pictures might imply), but everyone keeps telling me they are a must-read! I haven’t seen the movie yet either, but aren’t books always better anyways? JOIN A BOOK CLUB I recently joined one with some girlfriends, and there’s a fun sense of community around what we pick each month! We are currently reading The Silent Patient, a psychological thriller. LISTEN TO BOOKS An Audible subscription is $15 a month, but you can try your first book for free! Also, if you know someone with a subscription, they can send a book to you, and you can listen to it for free if you haven’t received a book from anyone yet. BRUSH UP ON YOUR PARENTING SKILLS Choose a parenting book that helps you deal with the various phases of childhood. Raising WorryFree Girls: Helping Your Daughter Feel Braver, Stronger, Smarter in an Anxious World is the first one on my list! You can find these books and more at Smile.Amazon.com.

FOR OLDER AUDIENCES: The Irishman Now, with everyone’s stomachs full, get ready to go out or curl up on the couch to watch one of the most anticipated films of the year, The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorsese. The Irishman is a mafia drama that tells the story of WWII veteran, Labor Union official and hitman Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), who ran with some of the most notorious gangsters to ever hit the streets, including mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and Labor Union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). It seems that Frank Sheeran may know more than he’s been letting on for quite some time, including Jimmy Hoffa’s mysterious disappearance. This film is rated R for persuasive language and violence, and with a running time of three hours and 29 minutes, get ready to nestle in for a while to catch this mobster drama. The Irishman also stars Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, Jesse Plemons and Bobby Cannavale. It hits theaters Nov. 1 and will be available on Netflix Nov. 27. FAMILY-FRIENDLY OPTION: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood If your family is filled with younger children that shouldn’t be watching our Netflix pick for the month, we suggest making plans to head to a theater near you to catch another much-anticipated film, with a kinder message and another fabulous performance by the two-time Academy Award-winner, Tom Hanks. Based on the real-life story of Fred Rogers, this film captures the essence of what Fred brought to our world, through the eyes of magazine writer and cynic Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), as he too learns to embrace Mr. Rogers' views on empathy, kindness and acceptance, as a way of life. This film is not rated and has a running time of one hour and 48 minutes. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood also stars Christine Lahti and Chris Cooper, and it hits in theatres Nov. 22.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT BAKING— IT'S ABOUT TRADITION CATHY MCREYNOLDS SHARES A FAMILY RECIPE THAT CONTAINS SUGAR, ORANGES AND A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE
ARTICLE CINDY O'HARA
THE END OF THE YEAR IS ALL ABOUT FAMILY AND TRADITION. For Cathy McReynolds, CEO and owner of Lacefield Music, making her orange cut-out cookies takes her back to her childhood and baking with her mother and sisters during the holidays. “My two sisters and I would make cookies every single year with our mother,” Cathy says. “I did this with my four children every single year too. This is a tradition I continue throughout today. I set a date, and my daughters and wonderful daughters-in-law bring my 17 grandchildren over, and we make those very same cookies. It’s a zoo, and they all take turns making their cookies. We have a blast, and it’s so loud you can hardly hear one another throughout the

Jim says Mathew's home is expected to be complete by June 2020. He says this foundation was the first and still is the only group to build homes for injured police officers. Mathew learned he'd been selected by the foundation when he got a personal phone call from Gary Sinise on Sept. 2. The rental home Mathew has been living in for the past eight years isn’t equipped for his injury and mobility limitations; getting from one room to another even can be challenging. “The doorways are all small, and some, I can’t even get through,” he says. Ryan, a former Arnold police officer, suffered severe brain damage after being shot on duty in 2017 and will also be getting a smart home through the foundation. Ryan received multiple awards for his admirable service with the Arnold Missouri Police Department. But, on Dec. 5, 2017, he was transporting a burglary suspect when the suspect pulled out a hidden firearm and opened fire inside of his police SUV, shooting him in the head. He was rushed to emergency surgery where a large portion of his skull was removed. Ryan spent months rehabilitating and overcame a series of infections and other setbacks. Just two months after the shooting, Ryan was able to speak his first full sentence. “I just gotta' get my badge,” he said, showing that his will remained intact. Ryan’s injuries have left him with severe brain damage causing his right arm to be paralyzed. On March 30, 2018, he began to practice walking with assistance, and he is making great progress. Ryan, his wife, Barbara, and their four sons currently live in a small home that presents major challenges for Ryan’s everyday life. The foundation is providing this courageous officer and his deserving family a specially adapted smart home that will enhance his rehabilitation process. “These are homes eight and nine that we’ve built in the 75-mile St. Louis region since 2012,” says Jim, who adds that it's the largest concentration of Gary Sinise Foundation homes in the United States. Donations can be made at GarySiniseFoundation. org/Donate, or checks can be made payable to the Gary Sinise Foundation with a note or memo citing Mathew Crosby or Ryan O’Connor as the donation recipient. Checks should be sent to the Gary Sinise Foundation, P.O. Box 50008, Studio City, California 91614. 44

And Missouri companies, such as Enterprise Holdings, Stifel, Hallmark, Cerner, Emerson and H&R Block are actively invest-

ing in the UK and creating jobs there. On the military side, British officers are embedded across Missouri in places such as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in St. Louis, or Whiteman Air Force Base near Warrensburg. So, three days of meetings, events and incredible aviation displays raised the visibility of Missouri’s importance to the United Kingdom in ways that will grow the plethora of connections going forward. The Royal Air Force Red Arrows led the arrival of the British vanguard with a historic flight by the St. Louis Arch. Joined at Spirit of St. Louis Airport by British Consul General John Saville and myself, the team immediately began their outreach to Missouri. Red Arrow team members met with more than 750 students at the air show’s STEM Expo (exciting future generations toward careers in science, technology, engineering and math); met with the consul general and myself in an amazing Jaguar from Plaza Jaguar Land Rover; and met members of the British Government who had travelled in from the Chicago Consulate, the British Embassy in Washington DC, and 46

ings with industry leaders. Following these important discussions, the UK Government team headed to technology partners in Chesterfield for a business leader roundtable, at which we were joined by the Red Arrows, Air Vice-Marshal Simon Ellard and other representatives from the UK’s Ministry of Defence. Focused on crafting a future path for the Missouri/UK economic relationship, the conversation was robust and is helping craft significant next

steps throughout the coming year. The day culminated in an event of around 300 people, including the Red Arrows, with key air show volunteers, kids who had entered a contest to fly with the Aeroshell team and many others. Saturday kicked off with a breakfast event in partnership with STL Motorcars, attended by elected officials, business leaders, the Red Arrows, AVM Ellard, Consul General Saville, the St. Louis County Police and Fire Bagpipe Band and more. To be discussing the importance of the UK/Missouri business relationship while surrounded by the best of British innovation in the form of Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Lotus was rather fitting. And then, we all headed to the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo for two days of amazing and beautiful performances by the RAF Red Arrows, alongside the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, a fully restored Spitfire, Skip Stewart, the Aeroshells and numerous other skilled flyers. Combined with team members spending time with students throughout both days in the STEM Expo, the effect of the team will be known for years to come. It was three valuable days in September. The Missouri/UK relationship is strong. It will get stronger thanks to the forward-looking partnerships being forged that transcend the Atlantic. And, thanks to the hospitality of 50,000-plus air show attendees, both the Red Arrows and Her Majesty’s Government know quite well that Missouri is a great place to visit, a great place to invest and the home of some of the finest people in all of North America.

confessions WHAT TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS HAVE WE LIVED THROUGH?
NAME: Cory Lawson BUSINESS: Stone Soup Galleries CONFESSION:
One year, my sweet potato casserole caught fire in the oven and came out charred black. That's when I learned putting marshmallows on sweet potatoes was like putting fuel on your casserole!
NAME: Shannon Smith Cancila BUSINESS: Special School District of St. Louis County teacher and Marquette High School CONFESSION:
My worst memory of Thanksgiving Day was on a drive to Colorado for the first time with my family. We stopped at the only open place to eat: Walmart. All that was left was six chicken tenders and dried macaroni. We were all so hungry and disappointed! NAME: Phil Graves BUSINESS: Dierbergs Markets CONFESSION:
I do eat a little bit of turkey, but I always eat so much more of certain side dishes—I’m talking stacks of stuffing and mashed potatoes with gravy. (Not just a little drizzle of gravy, but to the point where the stuffing and potatoes are almost drowning!) NAME: Deb Abbott BUSINESS: St. Louis Oasis CONFESSION:
Every Thanksgiving Day is magical because it takes me back to two times I participated in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, once with the Bullwinkle (J. Moose) balloon. We had to get there at 3 or 4 a.m., and it was a whole other world going on, surrounded by clowns whizzing around on rollerskates, for example. I got to control Bullwinkle's left hand, which is the one that waves! All the helium from all the balloons is let out altogether after the parade and goes into the air. The Clydesdale horses were participating, and we got to hear them whinny in a high-pitch due to the helium's effect. ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON 54
