We featured a few families deciding on RV-ing as the vacation of choice and motorcycle groups who love to explore the open roads and have a great time doing it. We believe in and promote our local restaurants and are lucky to have so many options. When cooking at home, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and find yourself eating the same things each day. We get it; we’re all busy and we have the go-to meals that we know will feed the family for the whole week, but we return to our favorite restaurants and order our favorite dish every time because we know it is always amazing. But, this month, we decided to look in—and outside—the box. We wanted to share how others enjoy food preparation almost as much as eating. After all, food is nourishing (and delicious), but it also brings people together.

With current conditions in flux, be aware that reservations are a must, so be sure to visit parks.ca.gov online for updated information on the RV camping sites that are open, and to make a reservation for your RV. RV’s come in many lengths and sizes, but, of course, someone needs to drive it. If at first it seems intimidating to drive a 20-36’ house-on-wheels, rest assured that just about anyone who can drive can learn to drive an RV and have fun doing it. Once you gauge how much space you’ll need, it’s good to know that all of the essential and many of the luxury amenities of a full-sized RV are available in a van-sized motorhome, just in a pint-sized package. You can expect standard RV’s to have convertible seating and sleeping areas, a bathroom and sink, kitchen with mini-fridge, eating area, and storage. The best way to find out if RVing is a right fit for your family, and what size, shape, and amenities are available is to actually walk through them. Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!

Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

Grilled Quail with Bean Puree and Chili Garlic Oil + 4 whole quails + 2 quart poultry brine + 1 cup garlic + 1/4 cup roasted pistachios + 1/4 cup dried chili japones + 2 cup rice oil + 1 quart cannellini beans + 1 quart lard + 1 cup cold water + Salt Submerge quail in a container with brine. Cover and refrigerate for 12 hours. Chili garlic oil: Heat 1/4 cup rice oil and fry ½ cup garlic until golden. Remove garlic and let oil cool. In a food processor, pulse pistachios, chilis, rice oil, and golden garlic. Bean puree: melt lard, add ½ cup garlic, cook until lightly golden. Add beans and cook on low heat until tender. Remove beans and garlic and blend while hot until smooth, using cold water (adding 1oz at time) to loosen and adjust texture to a puree. Season with salt. Remove quail from brine and fully dry. Brush rice oil on the quail and grill on medium-high heat until slightly pink. Plate the puree in a pool. Place the quail onto
