West Chester Lifestyle, we want to recognize the roles of other women who build our community as well. It takes a village to raise a child, and our village has women who are our children’s sisters, aunts, teachers, doctors, first responders, law enforcement officers, authors, entertainers, nurses, coaches, social workers, counselors and so much more. This month, we thank you all for everything you pour into West Chester and West Chester County! We also want to acknowledge the uncertainty we’re feeling as a community during this COVID-19 health crisis. We and our advertising partners, such as Garage Kings, send heartfelt Thank Yous to every American who’s working on the front lines to help conquer the coronavirus. As Troy Rainsberg at Garage King points out: the medical personnel, their support staff, the EMTs, family doctors and their admins have all put themselves in harm’s way to help the greater good. We appreciate every one of you. Troy also would like to thank all of the “Unsung Heroes” -- Every person who works

risk of contraction and are doing their part in helping the greater good. We appreciate every one of you, too. This pandemic has brought to light a lot of things we’ve taken for granted, reminds Troy: “The value of a face-to-face conversation. The joy of going out to breakfast. The excitement of going to see a movie. The sounds of a baseball game. The enjoyment of spending time with our family and friends. These reminders will make us stronger and prompt us to value those things the way we should.” “Even after the harshest of winters, we’re rewarded with the renewal of life that spring brings with it. Such will be with each of us,” Troy assures.

RENOVATING TIPS + Be sure to work with cabinet designers who provide 3-D renderings and walkthrough videos prior to any final decisions about new cabinetry plans. This is a great way to "try" new ideas without having to commit to them emotionally and financially. + Create key ports and drop zones for charging areas within cabinetry. Custom drawer organizers can have integrated chargers so cellphones lay in their own bay for out-of-sight, out-of-mind peace and convenience. + Turn small basement closets into insulated wine cellars. Designed correctly, a 3x4-foot space can hold 200 to 300 wine bottles. + Decide whether dedicated or reconfigurable space is most important in closet designs, in addition to how best to store belts, ties, jewelry and lingerie. 717.474.3630 or 888.365.3891 designs@mkdpa.com KitchenCabinetsMK.com

WHAT "FIRST" STANDS OUT IN YOUR LIFE, NOW AT THE STAGE OF YOUR LIFE YOU'RE IN? My most recent “first” would be the first time having kids, a real life change for us, and even more now that we added our second in September. WHAT'S YOUR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? A great pair of jeans! WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Not to react with emotion, take a breath. HOW DO YOU EXPECT THIS CATCHY 2020 DECADE-STARTER TO UNFOLD BY THE END OF THE YEAR? Hopefully introducing our store to new customers and bringing in new brands and styles our customers love. IF YOU COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND, WHAT WOULD YOU IMMEDIATELY CHANGE IN THE WORLD? Find a cure to end pediatric cancer (and the coronavirus!).

Emerald cut diamonds and vintage Cartier Jewelry, as well as celebrating with French champagne. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Treat everyone you work with as a “team” and every client with care and respect. HOW DO YOU EXPECT THIS CATCHY 2020 DECADESTARTER TO UNFOLD BY THE END OF THE YEAR? I think people are looking to set clear and decisive goals, and to keep better balance in their lives. IF YOU COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND, WHAT WOULD YOU IMMEDIATELY CHANGE IN THE WORLD? I would eliminate man-made diamonds from retail jewelry stores.

SUSAN REISER PROFESSIONAL ARTIST + DEVOTED PAINTER AND OWNER OF CLOUD NINE STUDIO GALLERY, LLC

WHAT “FIRST” STANDS OUT IN YOUR LIFE, NOW AT THE STAGE OF YOUR LIFE YOU’RE IN? Starting my own business as the owner of my studio/gallery Cloud Nine Painter, LLC. I sold my first painting in my early twenties and now sell hundreds of works annually. However, I am still catapulted onto Cloud Nine with every painting I sell and/or am commissioned to paint just like it was my first. Being an entrepreneur and running my own business as a working artist is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Painting is my calling and will always be my first love. WHAT’S YOUR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? Divine, rich oil paint. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? “Have confidence in your future” said my dad, the living legend Villanova basket ball star, Bernie Schaffer. He has told me this piece of advice ever since I was a child. HOW DO YOU EXPECT THIS CATCHY 2020 DECADE-STARTER TO UNFOLD BY THE END OF THE YEAR? I’m at the mercy of art lovers and art enthusiasts who wish to collect artwork for their home. By the end of this beautiful year, I hope to have installed over 400 works throughout the country and internationally. I have to spend long hours in my studio and painting en plein air to achieve this goal but luckily I don’t consider my career as actual work. I consider it a privilege and a joy to belong to the art world. When you were born to create, that’s what you’re going to do. You don’t have a choice. And if I don’t reach my goal by the end of 2020, I will still be content. Just spending each day at my easel is enough for me. IF YOU COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND, WHAT WOULD YOU IMMEDIATELY CHANGE IN THE WORLD? I’m a firm believer that art can change the world. Perhaps not day-to-day on a large scale, but a single piece of artwork can alter a person’s perception of the world. Therein lies its power. Art speaks to the soul and it’s a gateway for beauty and hope. My magic wand is my paintbrush, and I can only hope that I’ve made a difference in someone’s life through my work. That would be my definition of Cloud Nine. CONTINUED >

DENISE MAGGIT TI COLLINS MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER + CHAPMAN WINDOWS, DOORS & SIDING

WHAT “FIRST” STANDS OUT IN YOUR LIFE, NOW AT THE STAGE OF YOUR LIFE YOU’RE IN? The births of my two children, and that overwhelming feeling of absolute love. My son and daughter are now 20 and 17, and bring such a feeling of peace and joy to my life. Parenting is the toughest job in the world by far, the pay can’t be measured in dollars…it is measured in an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the gift. WHAT’S YOUR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? Blue Claw Crabs. I started eating them by the bushel at my grandparents’ hotel in Atlantic City. Once a week, we would have a crab feast with all of the guests. Kids all sat together, and we would spend hours eating crabs and just having fun conversations. I believe you could solve the world’s problems with a bushel of crabs and a six pack of beer. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? At the age of 20, my first real job at Scott Paper, with 401(k) benefits, my mentor and still good friend Jack Travis told me to save money every pay period. It didn’t need to be a lot, just something. I have been saving ever since. HOW DO YOU EXPECT THIS CATCHY 2020 DECADE-STARTER TO UNFOLD BY THE END OF THE YEAR? Hindsight is 2020. I think the start of this decade should lead us to think of the mistakes of the past…personal and global, and to learn from them, not be too stubborn to change, and to move forward personally and as a world nation to advance peace and goodwill. All lives matter, the elderly can teach us so much with their wisdom, those in their middle path of life should realize that the future belongs to the young, and we should give them more guidance in their lives. And the unborn are just waiting to make their mark on humanity, let’s let them. IF YOU COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND, WHAT WOULD YOU IMMEDIATELY CHANGE IN THE WORLD? World peace. No more wars for land, power, oil, religious domination or greed. One simple solution: We treat others the way we want to be treated. And I believe a fundamental return to religious values; wherever you are in your walk with God, keep going!

WHAT “FIRST” STANDS OUT IN YOUR LIFE, NOW AT THE STAGE OF YOUR LIFE YOU’RE IN? The “first” firsts that stands out in my life are the births of my incredible two children. They are such a blessing. What stands out now in my business is the way this program helps, supports and changes the lives of the people that come through my doors. It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever done. WHAT’S YOUR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? Hmmm, my most favorite thing to indulge in is time with my family away from phones and computers. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? To be kind and realize that everyone is going through tough stuff. HOW DO YOU EXPECT THIS CATCHY 2020 DECADE-STARTER TO UNFOLD BY THE END OF THE YEAR? Regarding my business, I see it blossoming and branching out to touch more and more people and make their lives better. IF YOU COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND, WHAT WOULD YOU IMMEDIATELY CHANGE IN THE WORLD? Judgment, it will serve no good purpose.

AS A FAMILY-OPERATED AND DAUGHTER/ FATHER BUSINESS, PENNS WOODS WINERY PRODUCES

INTERNATIONALLY

RECOG-

NIZED, AWARD-WINNING WINES FROM 100% PENNSYLVANIA-GROWN GRAPES. The winery’s tasting room in Chadds Ford provides an all-around vineyard experience from its convenient location off of US Route 202. There, they host live music, food and wine pairings, classes and events each weekend. However, while composing this article during the COVID-19 shutdown, Penns Woods co-owner Carley Razzi Mack, says their Wine Club Members helped them keep operating by purchasing cheese and lunch trays for pickup, and by promoting the winery to their friends. Additionally, Penns Woods ultra-premium wines are found in restaurants throughout Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs. Carley says women have gotten more involved in winemaking in recent years. “Women have more in-depth palettes, so we can taste deeper,” she adds. “And our customer base is 79-80% females, so we’ve devoted a lot of effort to creating various experiences and comfortable environments on our 30-acre property, regardless of whether someone wants an adult-only, family, picnic or pet-friendly spot.”

West Chester Lifestyle | May 2020

Penns Woods Winery is the result of Gino Razzi’s lifetime of experience in the world of wine. A respected importer and distributor of wine, Gino is an Italian immigrant from Abruzzo, in southern Italy. He settled in the Delaware County area in 1962, where he was fostered by the area’s Italian-American community. Gino served four years in the US Marines, then attended college in California. After graduation, he returned to Pennsylvania to rejoin family and friends. With three decades of success as a wine importer, in 1995, Gino turned his experience toward the craft of winemaking. He finished his first wine in 1997. Symposium, a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, was Gino’s first commercially released wine, and was awarded 95 points by Wine Spectator Magazine. Gino’s pursuit of perfection led him to his own back yard. In 2002, he began crafting wines from Pennsylvania–grown grapes. To his surprise, he found superb wines can be made in Pennsylvania. After a 2-year search for an ideal vineyard site, Gino decided to purchase the Smithbridge Winery, in 2004, to take advantage of its 25-year-old vines. In 2010, Gino’s daughter, Carley, joined him to manage the family’s tasting room and marketing aspects of the company. Also in 2010, Andrea Creato joined the Penns Woods Team. Together, the two work to provide wonderful experiences at the tasting room, hosting interactive wine tastings, unique wine and food pairings, and exclusive member-only events. In 2011, Davide Creato began working at Penns Woods, aiding in the advancement of the winery’s production and wine quality. In honor of the local contributions benefiting the winery, $1 from the proceeds of each bottle of Penns Woods wines is used to further wine and grape research in Pennsylvania. Due to the intimate size of the Penns Woods facility, reservations are required on Saturdays and Sundays. Buses and limos are not permitted without approval from Penns Woods Winery.

DIY

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY WANT SOME GREENERY TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space.

+

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.
