For many of us, the pandemic has turned our world upside down. Our homes have turned into offices and schoolrooms. We have been forced to recalibrate our lives.

However, throughout it all, we have returned to the solace of being outside with family. For a moment, I am thankful for how this pandemic has drawn us back to a lifestyle of being outside and being present in our daily lives. In this month's issue, we bring you a plateful of outdoor features to complement our new normal of social distancing. Our hope is that these stories will inspire you to make lifelong summer memories. Slow You Down! Colorado Spine Institute PLLC has taken steps to ensure its osteoporotic fracture patients receive the treatment and care they deserve through participation in The American Orthopedic Association’s Own the Bone® Quality Improvement (QI) program. Through our participation in Own the Bone and recognition as an Own the Bone Star Performer over the past 5 years, Colorado Spine Institute PLLC has demonstrated a commitment to helping our patients understand their risk for future fractures and the steps they can take to prevent them. What can people do to protect their bones? • Get adequate calcium and vitamin D, either through diet or supplements, if necessary. • Engage in regular weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercise. • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol to 2-3 drinks per day. Have you or a loved one had a broken bone over age 50? Talk to your health care provider and get a bone density screening to determine if osteoporosis might be the cause and learn additional steps you might need to take to prevent future fractures.

COMPLETION OF JOHNSTOWN COMMUNITY YMCA The Johnstown Community YMCA has been issued a Certificate of Occupancy. The build, which took 18 months from ground breaking to complete, came in on time and under budget. The pools are filled, the water slide is functional, the exercise equipment is ready to use, and the preschool is packed with toys and educational tools. Johnstown has erred on the side of caution in regards to public facilities since the COVID-19 crisis began in order to prioritize health and safety. The YMCA grand opening has been postponed indefinitely, but the town does plan to celebrate the opening when the state guidelines allow for such an event. Until then, the Johnstown Community YMCA will be available to the public for membership signups and tours. For more information, visit www.townofjohnstown.com.

bbq season at last

WITH ALL OF THE UNCERTAINTY IN THE WORLD THESE DAYS, TWO THINGS REMAIN CONSTANT. The first: we live in a beautiful place that seems like it was specifically designed to spend time outside. The second: barbecue and grilling season is upon us! With long days and mild, sunny weather, Colorado really shines in the summertime. However, many of the outlets where we typically enjoy this season, like patios, breweries, beer gardens, and public parks, are currently closed. Our solution to get your outdoor living fix

serves 4-6 + 2 lbs. flank steak (can substitute a large sirloin or small tri-tip steak) + 1-2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs (can substitute boneless pork chops) + 1-2 lbs. smoked sausage links, such as andouille or linguica + J. Brady’s Cowboy Shake (or other grill seasoning) + The Bottled Olive’s caramelized garlic olive oil (or other flavored finishing oil) DIRECTIONS Heat a gas or charcoal grill to medium high heat. You are looking for a constant, steady cooking, so be sure not to use high heat! Season the beef and chicken with J. Brady’s Cowboy Shake and place it on the grill along with the sausage. Cook the beef until it is medium (8-10 minutes per side), the chicken until it is completely done through (10 minutes per side), and the sausage until it is slightly charred and fully heated through (5 minutes per side). Attempt to only flip the meats once. Once the meats are done cooking, allow the beef and chicken to rest for 10 minutes (very important!) After resting, slice the sausage into 2-inch lengths and the chicken into 1-inch slices. Slice the beef into 1-inch slices across the grain. Arrange the meats onto a large platter and drizzle the Bottled Olive caramelized garlic olive oil over them. Serve alongside your preferred salads, vegetables, and condiments. DON’T NECESSARILY COINCIDE. After 35 years in the financial industry, he has only nominally slowed his pace of life. Throughout his career, Norm has participated in several boards and service clubs, such as the McKee Medical Center Foundation, the Rotary Club, Sertoma Club, and the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado.

n o r m r e h m e

In addition to his career and service, Norm and his

wife raised four children while residing in the downtown Loveland area. Rotary Club meetings previously took place in the basement of the old Pulliam Building, and it was in the midst of its historic beauty where Norm found his next project. Ten years later, and Norm is president of the Pulliam Community Foundation. Rising from the dust of the Great Depression and Works Progress Administration, the Pulliam Community Building was built in 1938 as a community center. “For decades, it was the social gathering place of Loveland,” Norm explains. He has hopes for renovation so the building can serve the community once again. Whether it be used for reunions, dances, fashion shows, or retreats, possibilities abound for the 4,000 square foot open stage auditorium. Norm and the entire board work on a volunteer-only basis, so 100 percent of the donations go directly to the project that is four-fifths of the way funded. “You just gather a good group of people around you and watch it happen,” Norm says. 20

t o m c a r r i g a n FEEDING A NEED LOVELAND/BERTHOUD TOM CARRIGAN IS DRIVEN BY A SINGLEMINDED FOCUS: TO FEED HUNGRY KIDS. In a country as wealthy as America and a region as generous as northern Colorado, he sees no reason that any child should ever find themselves without a meal. After his retirement from the sales and manufacturing industry, Tom took on the role as chairman of the Loveland Rotary Club’s KidsPak. He and his wife Corinne oversee the delivery of approximately 550 backpacks filled with five meals every Friday to children in need throughout the Thompson School District. Each one is designed to meet children’s nutritional needs over the course of a weekend-- a time when they otherwise might not get enough food. Tom and KidsPak take their goal of “feeding the future” to heart and constantly seek out innovative ways to get free food into the hands of children in need. Current closures have reduced the number of drop-off sites, so Tom has begun delivering packs to the Loveland Public Library to ensure hungry children are fed. Another important piece of the hunger puzzle is equipping adults with the knowledge to identify signs of hunger. Corinne has created and shared with the Thompson School District a checklist titled “17 Signs it’s Hunger” so that teachers, counselors, and other school employees can tell the difference between behavioral issues and a potential lack of food at home. In 2019, KidsPak delivered around 20,000 backpacks

filled

across

the

Thompson School District. That’s a total of 100,000 meals! Tom is motivated to see that number increase in the years to come. “Each year we look at the core question: how can we feed more kids?”

IF YOU STEP ONTO TOM AND EMMA KENNEDY’S THREE ACRES, YOU WILL ALMOST DEFINITELY BE GREETED WITH LOTS OF LOVE AND SLOBBER FROM THEIR EIGHT RESCUE DOGS! These hyper pups are just some of the benefits that come from owning and operating their nonprofit, the Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue. It began about a decade ago when the couple decided to save a dog from being euthanized at a high-kill shelter in Trinidad, Colorado. They chose their dog online and took a vacation to adopt her. They never expected to come back with nine additional canine friends! They were moved to action after seeing the ceiling-high stacks of kennels filled with dogs doomed to be put down. Since they had some experience fostering dogs, Tom and Emma decided they could do the most good by opening their own rescue. Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue was created. “We rescue dogs from places where they’re tied to a tree 24-hours a day. That’s not a life,” Tom says. “We rescue them from hoarding situations, where there are sometimes as many as 50 little dogs they’re allowing to breed.” The mission of their Rescue is two-fold: save dogs from high-kill shelters and reduce the number of unwanted puppies by providing low-cost spay and neuter clinics in the most poverty-stricken areas of New Mexico. Tom and Emma rescue the dogs from high-kill shelters across Colorado and then place them with one of their 50 foster families.

MICROBREWERIES

AND LONG-STANDING BREWING TRADITION, HOW DOES ONE STAND OUT? Better yet, what does it even mean to stand out? Is it the quality and variety of unique products? Is it the location? According to co-owner Whitney Way, what really separates Berthoud’s City Star Brewing is a sense of community. While many brewing outfits push to innovate and make a name for themselves, above anything else City Star Brewing is focused on community. “I think what differentiates us is our approachability. We are definitely a taproom oriented brewery,” Whitney says. The brewery just hit their 8th anniversary, but their facility has much older beginnings. According to Whitney, their location has deep roots in the community due to its location in the 100-year-old City Star barn livery stable in Berthoud. Much of their branding imagery is based on Berthoud’s history as the “old west” and the free spirit of Colorado’s earlier days. Product names like Bandit Brown, Outlaw, Deadwood, and Cowboy’s Golden Lager tie the theme together. If you close your eyes while taking a sip, you can almost imagine whetting your whistle at the livery all those years ago. Whitney says that they have a strong passion for upholding the Colorado lifestyle. They’re all about easy-drinking brews, spending time outdoors, and living the good life. Just like most businesses, City Star has adjusted their business for “to-go” orders during the COVID-19 crisis. All of

their products are currently available through online or call-in orders that are available for pick-up on site. As for their favorite “to-go” items, Whitney recommends Crowlers large canned beers filled directly from the tap. Due to their size and convenience, these are the perfect companion for a cookout or time outdoors.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) When it comes to their beers, City Star aims to focus on accessible, enjoyable products. They are a great companion for your choice of any Colorado summer activity. When it comes to cookouts, Sim’s Red-American Ale and Cowboy’s Golden Lager are excellent choices. Both products are refreshing while embodying a complex flavor palette that can hold up to the heartiest of barbecue fare. Beers like Bandit Brown, a smooth, English style brown, and Night Watchman, an American stout, are the perfect campfire sipper for a cool evening camping out in the mountains. Above all, what really separates City Star Brewing is actually what connects it. City Star brings together community, Colorado, history, and an opportunity to enjoy the simple things in life— which are often the best things.
