The original Artesian Hotel gained popularity for the area’s natural springs where guests could soak and relax. More than a century later, the beautiful modern-day bathhouse features a unique oversized whirlpool with six seating areas, which can accommodate four to six people each. A stone waterfall and LED lighting enhance the sensory experience.
While many hotels offer traditional day spas, Sole’renity also offers a children’s spa so that younger guests can feel pampered as well. Sole’renity was the only Oklahoma spa to be named one of America’s top 100 spas of 2018. The spa offers massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs, manicures & pedicures, oxygen treatments, as well as make-up, lash, and brow services.
Whether you want breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a snack, the dining options at The Artesian have you covered. In addition to the gourmet experience at Springs, the resort offers Bedré Cafe, a malt shop featuring sandwiches, wraps, sundaes, shakes, and malts to the tunes from the jukebox.
The Fountain Club is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail in between hands at one of the casino’s game tables, or before dinner at Springs. If you don’t have dinner plans or want a small bite while you enjoy your libations, The Fountain Club also offers appetizers and sandwiches.
To book your getaway, visit ArtesianHotel.com or call 855.455.5255 Reservations are recommended for dinner at Springs and can be made by calling 580.622.8104.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to give the gift of your time and effort to show those you love just how much they mean to you. If you prefer a romantic evening at home to a night on the town, we’ve got the perfect menu for you, plus recipes to help you turn up the date night heat in your kitchen. Roasted Rack of Lamb chocolate-raspberry wine glaze Cake & Ice Cream chocolate cake, ganache, cherry ice cream, and brandied cherries Recently, my partner in culinary crime and co-chef Joel Bein and I invited members of the Historic District Lifestyle family over for a tutorial in Valentine’s cooking, so that they may create a beautiful evening for themselves. On this particular evening, Craig Travis and his husband Joe Coffin (owner’s of Craig’s Curious Emporium) joined us to learn how to create a beautiful meal together at home. Contributing writer Marie Casimir came to pick up some new recipes to cook for her husband, Brad Cortright. Of course, our very own Administrative Director Steve Richards was front and center to learn first hand how to re-create these dishes for his husband (and our fabulous publisher) Bobby Mathis. While we don’t have room to publish the entire menu’s recipes in print, we will be sharing them on our facebook page throughout the first week of February. Roasted Rack of Lamb with Chocolate Raspberry Wine Glaze I n g r e d i e n ts + One 8-rib Rack of Lamb, Frenched + Unsweetened cocoa powder + Sea Salt or Kosher Salt + 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
D i r e ct i o n s 01 Preheat an oven to 450°F. 02 Lightly season the lamb with salt. 03 In a large roasting pan, over high heat, warm the olive oil until almost smoking. 04 Add the rack of lamb and brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a carving board. 05 Coat the seared lamb with the cocoa powder and set the rack, meat side up, in the roasting pan. 06 Roast until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the rack, away from the bone, registers 130°F for medium-rare, 15 to 20 minutes, or until done to your liking. While the lamb is roasting, prepare the sauce (below). When finished roasting, transfer the racks to a clean carving board, cover loosely with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes before carving into double chops.
Chocolate Raspberry Wine Glaze I n g r e d i e n ts + ¾ cup Seedless Raspberry Jam + 1 ½ cup dry red wine + 2 Tbsp cocoa powder + Salt, to taste + 1 Tbsp cold butter
D i r e ct i o n s 01 In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the wine. 02 Add the jam and stir to melt. 03 Add the cocoa powder and reduce the heat to low. 04 Allow to cook, occasionally stirring for 4-5 minutes. 05 Just before serving, stir in the butter just until melted into the sauce.
We very much hope that you will find inspiration and joy from our evening and that you will look for the rest of the recipes on our Facebook page. facebook.com/historicdistrictlifestyle

The award-winning collective of artists at 50 Penn Place Gallery (an OKC mainstay for the past 25 years) has benefited from working together for decades, showcasing their work at home while also exhibiting all over the US and the world. Every two months, the gallery hosts rotating shows highlighting guest artists, and gives away an original piece of art by the featured artist at the opening. In 2019, the collective began engaging the public with artist demonstrations outside of the gallery walls, directly in front of their space. “It’s a way to show the artistic process,” collective Bert Seabourn Wall at 50 Penn Place Gallery
member Connie Seabourn says, for those that may be intimidated to come into the gallery. Passersby can watch the artists work and ask them questions. The event is also an opportunity to match a face to a name of an artist they may have admired from afar. The next artist demonstration is February 8, 2020.

AR TIST ’ S PALE T TE (CONTINUED) Art by Connie Seabourn
CONNIE SEABOURN
Collective member Connie Seabourn is an accomplished artist who has exhibited at numerous prestigious galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, the Festival of the Arts, and for 20 years at the Red Earth Festival. Seabourn’s work is ethereal, dreamy, and narrative. She says that “dreams, studies, and explorations of love and motherhood, especially after the birth of her daughter and granddaughter, inspire her work.” Her preferred medium is watercolor, but she is also an illustrator. Connie is currently working on illustrating a children’s book in collaboration with OKC folk artist Louise Goldberg of Miss Brown To You. The artists said she was brought to tears every time she listened to “Grandmother Lookout Tree,” a song written by Goldberg, and now the two have collaborated on a new book that will be published by RoadRunner Press in May 2020. Connie is also a children’s book author, says this will be the first time she is collaborating with another writer and enjoys the process of working across mediums. Connie’s work continues to evolve, finding inspiration in the natural and spiritual world. You can see her work at the gallery ranging from dreamy birds in flight to a series of portraits of “crystal children” whose direct gaze and iconic religious hand gestures leave a lasting impression. 24

AN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM BRINGS JOY AND COMFORT TO THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AT OU MEDICINE ARTICLE KALIE FRY | PHOTOGRAPHY TRAVIS DOUSSETTE, OU MEDICINE
THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AT OU MEDICINE LAUNCHED AN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM THAT EMPOWERS CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN TO ENGAGE IN CREATIVE EXPRESSION WHILE BRINGING JOY AND COMFORT TO THEIR FAMILIES. We recently sat down with Ginna Dowling, a renowned contemporary printmaker, installation artist, and visual storyteller, to learn about the inspiration behind The Language of Hope and Courage. The power of the project is children. Each child creates a symbolic representation of themselves, ranging from character traits and emotions to aspirations, concepts, and their favorite objects. These symbols, otherwise known as “identity glyphs,” will be compiled into a pop-up installation representing the hospital community. This effort also includes sharing the meaning or significance behind each symbol. “The kids absolutely get it,” said Dowling. “They have a lot to say, but they never dwell on their illness.” In this project, children have the opportunity to play with colors, shapes, and forms of expression spontaneously without judgment. This type of creative process creates a level playing field for all ages and abilities. “It gives them a creative voice that isn’t defined by disability or impairment,” Dowling explained. This collaboration represents all walks of life. They fit, work, and play together to create a visual rendering of a cohesive community. The installation will also explore the use of symbols, visual references, and layers to convey a literal or symbolic story within the body of art. The physical layers of materials will also create a play of light and shadows, giving the static images movement and cinematic effect. While it’s heavy with meaning, the work itself will be buoyant, joyous, and visually beautiful.

The Language of Hope and Courage will take place in three phases. The first will include installations on-site for patients, families, hospital staff, and visitors to view. The second and third phases will consist of a public reception viewing of the final project as well as a touring exhibit presented at regional and national artistic venues. “It’s not just about the kids; it’s also for their support teams — their families, the doctors, the nurses, and everyone that’s working behind-the-scenes,” shared Dowling. The goal is to bring hope, inspiration and power of art to different types of people. Generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, the state arts agencies of Oklahoma, the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, and The Children’s Hospital Volunteers charity, its impact, and reach have been immense. Leaders at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medicine say the impact of the program may improve a child’s perspective on life and their ability to conquer disease. This collaboration is the first step towards a robust therapeutic arts program. The Children’s Hospital currently offers play programming through child life, music therapy, facility therapy dogs, and volunteers. But this year, the focus is on expanding arts experiences and building a program. “Art isn’t just visual — it engages the whole person and engenders hope. That’s why building a strong art program for our kids is vital,” said Sara Jacobson, director of Child Life and Volunteers. There’s healing power in this combination of creative expression, collaboration, and community. Dowling recently began working with Chan Hellman, Ph.D., the founding director of the Hope Research Center. Hellman focuses on the measurable impact of hope and how it affects those facing adversity and stress. With this partnership, The Children’s Hospital will be able to statistically measure the hope and impact of the project on children, their families, and medical teams. “It’s taken on a life of its own,” shared Dowling. “The power of creativity resonates in this program and will benefit many to come.”
