MARK AND CINDA SALAZAR: This was a special project for us because we were able to create and build a beautiful outdoor living space for our neighbors and personal friends, Chuck and Tegal Patel. The deck they had was tile and in such bad shape that they really never used their backyard. Now, they have a space to spend hours with family and friends. JCL: TELL US ABOUT THE MATERIALS YOU USED ON THIS DECK. M/CS: The Patels wanted to make sure that this deck would be maintenance-free and last for years to come.

MEET CARRIE CLAIBORNE, RDN, LDN, OUTPATIENT CLINICAL DIETITIAN EMORY JOHNS CREEK HOSPITAL

TELL US ABOUT ONE OR TWO INFLUENTIAL WOMEN IN YOUR LIFE. The two most influential people in my life are my mentor and fellow dietitian Anna Albritton and my daughter Chloe Claiborne. I first met Anna in 2015 when I was still in my undergrad for dietetics. I was looking for a summer camp with a nutrition component to earn volunteering hours and experience. She was just finishing up her internship at the time and working contract as the Dietary Coordinator at Camp Kudzu. It’s a non-profit organization for kids living with type one diabetes. I worked with her during the summers of 2015 and 2017 on dietary staff and complete a five-week rotation with her as my preceptor while in an internship. She, like I, do not have a personal connection to type one but have built a connection through the camp community. I have learned so much about diabetes management and how to help my patients with diabetes. Though my daughter Chloe is only 10 years old I look up to her in many ways. She is somewhat of an old soul. Chloe is 16

We plan and plan until we feel like the plan is fail-proof but the reality is, nothing is fail-proof. There is no such thing as perfection and failing is part of life. So last year, mentally and physically exhausted my husband and I decided to pack it up and meet some friends in Los Cabos, Mexico for the New Year. (Christmas trees can stay up one more week..) We have never been to Los Cabos. The direct flight from ATL clocks in at only 3 1/2 hours, perfect for a nap, light lunch, and a movie. For our stay we booked a room in the Griffin Club at the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort and Spa seeking an attentive, but laid-back atmosphere where we could relax and recoup. Before we took off, Laura Castillo who is one of the hosts on property sent us an introduction to the resort, with weather forecasts and even packing suggestions. She booked us an airport transport, so we grabbed a margarita as they loaded our bags and were off in no time. A short 20 minutes later we arrive at the private development of Puerto Los Cabos not far from San José del Cabos. The JW does not disappoint, overlooking the Sea of Cortez the visually beautiful and stunning property, awash in gorgeous ocean views. The breeze has us feeling more relaxed already (ok may have had a little to do with those delicious margaritas too). A week is not enough time here, I know

out the migrating season because this is a magical thing to see). Then after breakfast we head to the gym for a workout (a little more holiday stress/pounds melt away). Around 10:00 we are ready to relax a bit at the infinity pool overlooking the sea. There are several pools on premises but our favorite is the Griffin Pool where even in high-season it’s not crowded. There are plenty of upscale and fine dining options in the area including Flora Farms, a farm to table dining experience at its finest, right around the corner from the JW, but our favorite was Café Des Artiste on property. Café Des Artiste creates culinary delights inspired by Mexican flavors prepared in the gourmet french techniques that they describe as French-Mexican fusion. It may seem like an odd pair, but the food and cocktails are truly delicious! After a few days unwinding by the pool and hanging with our friends, we are ready to fully relax and let go of the remaining holiday tension—so we head to the spa. Two hours later, after a dip in the cold and hot baths (you must try the cold pool at least once, your legs will thank you) a steam and sauna followed by heavenly deep tissue massages, we weren’t even bothered by the thoughts of all the Christmas decor we had yet to put away. We felt AMAZING! The JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa was the perfect getaway, giving us just what we needed this winter and when things return to normal we can’t wait to return!

Won the first state playoff tournament game in school history by defeating TriCities, 60-51 Qualified for the Elite 8 of the state tournament by defeating Houston County, 65-55 Seniors won 71 games over their 4 years in school (the school had only won 39 games in the previous 8 years) and they set 12 program school records during their time at Johns Creek. Carson Tanguilig, a junior who is committed to play tennis for University of North Carolina also was the first player in our program who has been elected All-State. She led us in scoring, rebounding, assists & steals this season.

IN FEBRUARY, FOUR JOHNS CREEK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HELD THE SECOND ANNUAL “IGNITE THE LIGHT” DANCE FOR SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS. MJ Tredway, Lucy Clarke, Liz Cheung, and Megan Cosgrove, in partnership with the Johns Creek High School PALS Program (Practical Application Life Skills) along with about 50 volunteers and children with special needs danced the night away with a roaring twenties theme. PALS is designed to serve students who have documented significant cognitive or physical disabilities which prevent them from making meaningful progress in a general education curriculum and who require instruction in daily living skills. Two years ago, these high school girls were together one morning before school and tossed around the idea of hosting a special needs homecoming, laughed and agreed that was a crazy idea- too hard to do. But they believed in the project and ultimately decided to open it up to other local high schools and middle schools to help provide encouragement and a fun place to go for a night out. The girls worked together to fund the event with the sale of t-shirts and with their own money. The Falls of Autry Mill HOA donated the neighborhood clubhouse for the dance and the lead singer of The Moxie Band donated his time with Gigi’s Cupcakes at the Forum donating festive cupcakes. This year’s event was a Roaring Twenties theme. Dancing is a form of expression, and many of the kids were able to open up and find tremendous joy by gathering in a small enough group where they felt “safe.” Each guest was assigned student volunteers as “escorts” to make sure they had someone to dance with, eat a snack with and just share a laugh or two. 34
