HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

summer skin DR. DAVID S. BALLE, MD

AS WE BEGIN TO VENTURE OUT AND ENGAGE IN THE FUN ACTIVITIES OF SUMMER, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE REMEMBER TO ALWAYS TAKE THE TIME TO PRACTICE GOOD SUN PROTECTION. + Limit your sun time, especially between the hours of 12 noon and 3pm. This is when the sun's rays are at their strongest. + Wear protective clothing. Did you know that you can get clothing (not just swimwear) with built-in SPF or Sun Protection Factor? Hats, Sunglasses, even Umbrellas should also be a part of our summer gear. Men, due to having shorter hair tend to be more susceptible for having burns and skin cancer on the scalp, neck and ears. Babies wearing hats help to protect their head and keep sun out of their eyes. They should also wear sunglasses if they can. + Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily to ALL areas of exposed skin. Common zones forgotten are the top of a bald or shaved head, the ears, lips, neck and feet. Re-apply every two hours if in direct sunlight. + Do you use enough? Starting amounts are a quarter size for face and neck, and at least a shot glass full for the body. The larger the surface area, add more to get the full strength protection of the SPF rating. + What about Vitamin D? We only need moderate sun 10-30 minutes a few times a week depending on skin tone (time can increase with depth of natural skin color) and we can still have our sunscreen on! Vitamin D3 supplements are also available. + Don’t forget, if you have not been seen by a Dermatologist for your yearly total skin exam. David S. Balle, MD, Grosse Pointe Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, 16815 E. Jefferson Ave., Suite 260 Grosse Pointe, MI 48230, www.grossepointedermatology.com, 313.886.2600.

+ NAME AND CITY: DANIEL L. KLAASEN, GROSSE POINTE FARMS HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SAILING?

I’ve been sailing for about 40 years. I was one of three brothers and my dad bought a Tartan Ten, a 33 foot, one design sailboat. Initially we were a small crewed boat; with three early teenagers, my dad and

THOSE WHO INSPIRE US

one or two of his friends. As the years went by the teenagers grew both in size and number, in the end it was my dad, my brother(s) and our teenage friends. By the time I was a freshman in high school

18

Grosse Pointe Lifestyle | July 2020

we had traveled to several national regattas and other big one design regattas locally as well as through out the Great Lakes. I learned quickly that if I wanted to race sailboats competitively I needed a job that allowed for this, hence I got a job making sails for sailboats. It was an amazing experience, which I continued throughout high school and college. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RACING THE MACKINAC? My first Mackinaw Race was in 1990. I raced on the family Tartan Ten, Macho Duck. At the time there was only the long course. Since that time, I didn’t miss a race for 15 years. Over those years I raced on a multitude of different boats; T-10, NA40, Thomas 35, Tripp 33, J105, C&C 35 MKII, Olson 40,.. Due to marriage, children, and work,.. I’ve missed a few over the years. 2020 will be my 25th Mackinaw Race. DO YOU HAVE A MAC STORY THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? I feel that racing sailboats teaches you so much about life, friendship, community, and respect for the forces of nature. You must take the bad with the good, deal with bad and enjoy it when it is good. I remember a long course Mackinaw race on my family’s J105, we went 5 miles in twelve hours, it was awful on so many levels, but the next twelve hours we covered almost 100 miles. It was truly awesome, blast reach with our Asymmetrical spinnaker, surfing waves all the way into the finish at Mackinaw Island. The bad made the good, that much more sweet. + NAME AND CITY: THOMAS WHITE GROSSE POINTE FARMS HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SAILING? I have been sailing for over 54 years. Dad took us sailing when we were old enough to walk and wear those clumsy life jackets with out falling out of them. When I was a Junior sailor at Crescent Sail Yacht Club. I really enjoyed sailing against my buddies and connecting with other Junior’s from other clubs. I was also able to travel for the Sears Cup and Bemis Cup – that was a blast. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RACING THE MACKINAC? My 1st Mac was in 1977. Notre Dame Du Lac was the first boat that I raced. How many different boats have you raced in it? I have raced in approximately 7 different boats. Art Cope’s boat The Limerick was my favorite by far. DO YOU HAVE A MAC STORY THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? Sailors cannot tell just one story. Of course there is the 85 Mac where it blew 45 knots. I sailed with my high school buddies,

THE GIRL FROM WIDOW HILLS BY MEGAN MIRANDA As a young girl, Arden Maynor was safely found days after sleepwalking away from home. The infamy of the story overshadows her life until she relocates and changes her name. Now, the twentieth anniversary of her rescue is approaching and she’s sleepwalking again. One night she awakens in her yard, with a body at her feet— the corpse of a man she knew in her previous life as Arden Maynor. HOME BEFORE DARK BY RILEY SAGER Twenty-five years after her family fled Baneberry Hall in the middle of the night, Maggie Holt inherits the sprawling estate. Skeptical and too young to remember her time in the house, Maggie is determined to simply restore and sell the home. As she pursues her project, she begins to believe her father’s stories—and what she uncovers is more terrifying than any haunting. ALICE KNOTT BY BLAKE BUTLER After several pieces of artwork are stolen from Alice Knott’s vault, a video emerges of one painting’s detailed destruction. As the video goes viral and copycat artwork destructions increase, all eyes are on the formerly reclusive heiress. Atlanta author, Blake Butler uses Alice’s introspective monologues to deliver a layered novel analyzing art’s meaning, legacy, and value. THE AMERICAN ADRENALINE NARRATIVE BY KRISTIN J. JACOBSON With the Summer Olympics postponed, you can get your adrenaline rush from this collection of narratives focused on the rise of heightened-risk, “extreme” sports within a natural setting. Perfect for lovers of Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” or Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild”. STRANGER IN THE LAKE BY KIMBERLY BELLE Atlanta author Kimberly Belle is back with a riveting new domestic thriller that will have you thinking twice about what lies beneath the surface of your favorite lake. When Charlotte married wealthy widower Paul there was local gossip, but now a body has washed up under their dock—in the exact same spot where Paul’s first wife tragically drowned. What first seems like a horrific coincidence quickly becomes a matter of life and death when Charlotte discovers the woman in the lake is not a stranger. THE CHICKEN SISTERS BY KJ DELL’ANTONIA The century spanning feud between the Moores and the Pogociellos is about to be settled once and for all on the reality television restaurant competition, Food Wars. While the two teams each try to prove that they make the best fried chicken in the state, family secrets will be exposed and sibling bonds will be put to the test. Explore the power of good food while you try to figure out which restaurant (and family) will win: Chicken Mimi’s or Chicken Frannie’s?
