EVERY YEAR, AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON COMES AROUND, I START TO FEEL A SENSE OF EXCITEMENT AND ANTICIPATION FOR THE SPIRIT THIS SEASON BRINGS.I love December. It is a whirlwind of festivities, but there is so much nostalgia built from the traditions that I took from my childhood and have carried over to my family. For me, watching my children experience that joy is what makes this season so magical. I can remember how it felt to drive around the Plaza and Candy Cane Lane to look at holiday lights with my family crammed in the family station wagon, listening to Bing Crosby

and trying not to spill the hot chocolate that we brought in the car from home. The smell of a burnt match still brings me right back to the lighting of the advent wreath each morning in elementary school. We all loved that it gave us a good 10 minutes of time out of class. However, for me, decorating the tree was my favorite Christmas tradition. My mom let all 10 of us kids “help” her decorate, and let me tell you, that tree was quite a sight. With tinsel clumped together everywhere and several ornaments hanging within a few inches of each other, it was not the prettiest of trees to anyone outside of our family, but to me, it was breathtaking. The best part of that tree was the strands of handmade stringed popcorn that adorned it. By the

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN ART. I have always loved drawing, and a pencil and paper was my happy place. My dad was an artist in his spare time, and it really opened up a magical space in my childhood. My dad is no longer on this earth, so when I create art as an adult, I feel connected to him. WHAT MEDIA DO YOU WORK WITH AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE? I work with every medium in the realm of 2D. I haven’t tried sculpture, but that doesn’t mean it’s not in my future. I consider my abstract art “abstract landscapes.” They are inspired by the vistas that I see when I travel. I layer those memories in my mind and paint them into a single image. I have done several commissions in KC from photos that collectors supply from their own travel experiences. Currently, I’m using mixed media—acrylic/ pastel/charcoal/oil on canvas. My figurative art is created using either oil or acrylic for paintings and graphite or ink for drawings. WHAT OTHER ARTISTS DO YOU LOOK UP TO OR DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? I’m inspired by all things creative. Music, architecture, travel, design and photography are huge inspirations for me. I keep all those elements in constant rotation in my life. Take any of those away, and my heart physically aches. Of course, I love other artists, but I don’t get wrapped up in anyone’s style too much as I want to keep my mind free of a singular influence. The art I have in my home is usually a style that’s unlike mine, which is why I find it fascinating. CONTINUED >

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR ART AROUND TOWN? My website is Janeskofineart.com, but I really encourage collectors to visit my Instagram account, which is kept current daily. You can also watch my process and painting videos and see my new studio assistant, Mish Mish. My IG account is @janeskoart. ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING ON? Two years ago, I had a concept to shoot a nude model in my bathtub. Using the photos as reference, I have created a collection that will finally debut November 15 at the Crossroads Hotel. This project has been a long time coming, and I am so excited to show the collection in my home town. The images will be exhibited in a private space on the 1st floor of the hotel from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Space is limited. To RSVP, please send a message to the email below. ARTICLE LISA MOYER WARREN BUFFET SAID, “THE FIRST RULE OF INVESTING IS DON’T LOSE MONEY. The second rule of investing is don’t forget Rule No. 1.” If you run a financial services firm that has nearly doubled in size every year for the past five years, you’re probably remembering Rule No. 1. At True Peace Financial Services in Overland Park, this full-service retirement planning firm is helping Kansas City residents create financial independence, and they’re telling their friends. “I never get tired of happy tears,” says Leslie Davis, president and CEO. “Once a client realizes their hard-earned funds can truly last a lifetime, the rush of happiness and relief they show after years of worry is priceless.” 18

As a former senior financial consultant in Leawood, Davis served as an advisor to advisors—educating and building plans for more than 500 financial professionals nationwide. “This intense learning curve of planning and teaching difficult case design to other advisors helped hyper-expose me to the trials and pitfalls of planning for retirement,” she says. In 2011, Davis started True Peace Financial Solutions, LLC to create an educational environment for clients to understand financial planning options in a comfortable atmosphere to build financial independence for “the retirement of their dreams.” Davis can be heard on multiple local radio shows, including KMBZ. She also hosts financial presentations at local companies, including Black & Veatch, the City of Olathe, South Law, and others. She is a co-author of the upcoming book Mama’s Secret Recipe for Retirement with Jack Canfield, whom Davis met through mutual friends. Davis adds that with the current volatile market, the goals of principal protection and growth are in high demand. “New financial products are evolving that can protect the principal of your money while providing excellent growth potential,” Davis says. “No longer do you have to dance in traffic to make a buck! WHERE THEIR HEARTS WERE LEADING:
(CON TI N UED)
“I’m 27, and I have an 8th-grade son, so it’s an odd scenario,” she says, “plus the boys are mixed-race, so we get lots of questions. I don’t think people mean to be rude. People ask questions to make conversation or to understand. Here’s what I would ask of society in general—if I introduce him as my son, just go with it. If you don’t have a reason to know more, then just accept he’s my son.” The Cowleys hope the adoption will be final by Christmas. After which they will close their license—for now. “We have three rambunctious boys, all with different needs, and our house feels full now,” Emily says. “A few weeks ago, I watched my three boys wrestling, laughing and giggling up a storm, and it warmed my heart. Yes, it’s loud, and our house is constantly messy, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.” This Christmas will be one of celebration for both generations of families. “It’s the first Christmas that Corbin will be with us fully through all our traditions, and our first Christmas with our new grandsons,” Steve and Andrea say. “Family is everything.”
WE HOPE WE’RE SETTING OUR BOYS UP FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE, WHATEVER THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE FOR THEM. WE HOPE TO LOVE THEM WELL ENOUGH THAT THEY CAN LOVE OTHER PEOPLE. WE HOPE THEY ARE GOOD, STRONG MEN WHO TAKE CARE OF THOSE WHO DEPEND ON THEM. ONE DAY AT A TIME, ONE HUG AT A TIME, WE HOPE TO RAISE OUR SONS TO KNOW THEY ARE INFINITELY CHERISHED.”

DIY Holiday Wreath Place Cards ARTICLE AUDREY KUETHER – OHSOLOVELYBLOG.COM

I’M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR UNIQUE WAYS TO UPDATE MY HOLIDAY TABLE DECOR TO LIVEN UP HOLIDAY DINNERS. Instead of the same table settings I’ve used in the past, I wanted to try something new—enter my DIY holiday wreath place cards. I love the look of simple modern wreaths, but what I love even more are miniature versions. After some quick shopping on Amazon (as well as in my holiday decor stash at home), I had everything I needed to make my wreaths.

Steps I started with a 4-inch metal hoop and sparkled greenery, which I pulled off the stems to make into smaller pieces. I originally thought it would be easier to use my pliers and gold wire to attach the greenery to the hoops, but I quickly realized that a glue gun is much easier. After placing the greenery over the mini hoops where they looked good to me, I then hot-glued one line of glue to one side of the hoop and pressed one greenery strand to it until the glue dried. Adding a little more hot glue to the backside secured the greenery in place. Once I was happy with the placement, I moved on to the other side of the wreath. I like a slightly asymmetrical look, so I opted for a shorter section of greenery on the left side. I cut a strand of baking twine (approximately 5 to 6 inches), ran it through the punched hole and attached it to the hoop. How simple and cute is that? These DIY holiday wreath place cards will look classic and festive in any place setting from Thanksgiving through winter. If you want to keep it even more simple, you could simply fold some card stock into a small folded place card. 38

Ready for More? Let’s do another look using the same supplies with the addition of the artificial pine cone and berry picks. I followed the same steps as above but used the greenery picks instead. I hot glued one pick to the hoop until secure from the front and back side. Next, I added in another pick to my liking. It felt a bit sparse, so I glued a small pinecone and a couple of extra berries to the hoop. That’s it! These DIY holiday mini wreaths are just sooo easy! They look super cute and festive in the table setting. I love the pop of red! What do you think? Will you be making any of these DIY holiday wreath place cards for your next gathering? I highly recommend it!

She didn’t have professional baking experience and neither did her team. “None of us came from a bakery background, but none of us came from a small business background either,” she says. “So as with everything else, we’ve figured it out as we go.”
