HOW CAN A SMALL, COASTAL TOWN BE HOME TO THE #3 BEST AMPHITHEATRE IN THE WORLD? The secret is in its roots. June 27, 1965. It’s opening night at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and 2,300 people have come to witness the first performance of Paul Green’s play “Cross and Sword” on the Amphitheatre stage. The crowd’s energy and excitement is palpable, this is a historical moment for St. Augustine. Fast forward to September 22, 2019. The exact same energy is present as multiple Grammy award-winning Country music star Kacey Musgraves comes from stage right, says “Good evening, St. Augustine!” and 4,800 music fans respond with a minutes-long roar of cheers and applause. This is Kacey Musgraves only Florida play and people from all over the state have come to witness this historical moment in live music. Over the course of the Amphitheatre’s nearly 55 years in existence, it has hosted musical icons such as Bob Dylan,

Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett and more. Generations of high school and college students have crossed its stage during graduations. Thousands of people have shopped its Saturday Famers Market and Tuesday Night Market, attended free movie nights and dug through crates and crates of records for that elusive Rolling Stones album during its biannual Record Fair. The Amphitheatre has doubled its seating capacity, added two stages and two food trucks areas, adopted a rigorous approach to sustainability and conservation all while hosting over 50 concert events a year. All of its efforts to set the bar for what a music venue can achieve through diverse programming, community engagement and a passion for the arts resulted in the Amphitheatre securing the #3 spot for Amphitheaters Worldwide by Pollstar Magazine. Not bad for a county owned and operated performing arts venue. You see, St. Augustine Amphitheatre is a unique institution within the concert industry. While most venues are privately owned and operated, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre is owned by St. Johns County and is operated, programmed and staffed by the St. Johns County Cultural Events Division, which also oversees the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. Another unique aspect of the venue is that

it is nestled within the gorgeous, natural setting of Anastasia State Park. It is not uncommon to hear the nearby Atlantic Ocean waves crashing or to see a snowy egret flying overhead. It all adds to the magic found at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. A magic that comedian Adam Sandler to referred to as “lightning in a bottle” after his performance at the Amphitheatre in 2017. THE INTERSECTION OF SOCIAL GOOD AND ECONOMICAL DEVELOPMENT

Saint Augustine Lifestyle | January 2020
THE FESTIVITIES OF THE HOLIDAYS ARE STILL LINGERING; CONTINUE BUILDING MEMORIES WORTHY OF THIS YEAR’S SOCIAL MEDIA FEED AT ONE OF THE BEST ATTRACTIONS IN ST. AUGUSTINE. The St. Augustine Distillery offers an amazing experience for locals and tourists alike. Co-founders Philip McDaniel and Michael Diaz started the distillery with the vision to create what McDaniel calls “the intersection of social good and economic development.” These two have a lot in common: each is a family man with four children, both have lived in North Florida for decades and both are on their second careers. “We saw the distillery as an opportunity to do something really cool for the community and at the same time, if it were successful financially, we would want to reinvest those dollars back into the community,” explains McDaniel. Since opening in 2014, St. Augustine Distillery has built its reputation on sustainable business practices, Florida agriculture and historic preservation. Located in the Historic Lincolnville District in the Florida Power & Light Ice Plant, this craft distillery turns locally grown sugar cane, corn, wheat and citrus into award-winning vodka, gin, rum and bourbon. The craft quality of Florida’s first bourbon, and the other locally-made spirits, are unparalleled since most distilleries manufacture more liquor in a day than St. Augustine Distillery batches in a year. The small footprint is a philosophy that McDaniel recalls learning from his father while camping. “My dad would always say, ‘Philip, always leave your campsite a little cleaner for the next guy.’ That’s the same philosophy I run the company by.” St. Augustine Distillery collaborates with local farmers, business owners and craftspeople to create a welcoming environment that is good for the bottom line and good for the community. Instead of dumping 750 gallons of mash down the drain, they researched and found some farms in the area that could use the food for their cattle and pigs. One particular farmer has an extra 125 head of cattle that they're able to now ranch each year because of the distillery’s free contribution of cooked mash. The distillery has around 15 local partnerships where St. Augustine Distillery consciously repurposes all of the barrels or integrates some of the craft spirits into really innovative products that have never been made or done before. The barrels can be seen while on the family-friendly tour. The behind-the-scenes atmosphere showcases everything from the history of the building to actual distilling CONTINUED >

that if you're fortunate enough to have the gift of health and the gift of time and a little bit of money. in 1994. Then, the population hovered around 80,000 people and current estimates put the number well above 300,000 and growing. “We strive hard to reinvest in the community,” McDaniel says. St. Augustine Distillery also contributes financially to the local community. They have helped finance and build two Habitat for Humanity homes in St. Augustine, and are working on a third. “We make world-class spirits while improving our community wherever possible. RENOVATE & REFINE
THE MODERN HOME OFFICE
6 TIPS FOR ELEVATING FORM AND FUNCTION ARTICLE JOANNE ESCH 24
Saint Augustine Lifestyle | January 2020
THERE ARE SMALL STEPS YOU CAN TO CREATE A MORE PEACEFUL AND PRODUCTIVE WORK SPACE. More families have one or both parents working from home and the home office has really come a long way. No longer is it the makeshift space for paying bills or the latest craft project. The space has become more and more sophisticated as business owners and busy professionals are working from home. It’s become the nerve center of the entire house. But you’re not going to get much done if it’s a disorganized mess and you’re buried in a pile of files, papers, mail, accessories, and general clutter. Let’s face it—it’s hard to keep a home office organized. Critical to any home office is the need for working space. Keeping the desk top free and clear of papers can be monumental. Look for ways to sneak in storage. Using a monitor riser helps to organize smaller items. And don’t forget about a place to stash pens,

paper clips, and other essentials in a chic way. But are you holding on to pens that no longer work? Old magazines and newspapers? Unused or broken office equipment? Toss them. Productivity is great, but don’t forget aesthetics. We want our space to be pleasing to the eye. A metal wall grid offers the best of both worlds: it looks like art and works as a space to hang to-do lists, work-related inspiration, or your child’s latest art work. Creating a zone for mail and other paperwork is essential. Every home office needs a good paper organizer. A file holder comes in handy to hold current projects - keep them front and center. If it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind. The key to creating an efficient workspace is to position your most important tools and those items used most often handy and close by. Valuable time is wasted by searching out regularly used supplies. Keep a shelf nearby to hold your most important tools and those items used most often. Curbing cable clutter is also a necessity for any home office. Tripping over a snaking mass of wires and cables is not only a hazard, but creates visual clutter. And if you can, use a freestanding light rather than a desk light and move computer equipment to the floor or position on another stand close by. Banish the clutter and chaos for good and create a working space that’s productive, peaceful, and inspirational.

SETTING YOUR SIGHTS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Saint Augustine Lifestyle | January 2020
DID YOU MAKE ANY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS?
Have you kept them?
Although it’s estimated that more than 80% of people in the U.S. make New Year’s resolutions, by the end of January half of them have failed to keep their commitments to themselves. Along with resolutions, most goals and intentions are forgotten long before summer. Start this New Year off right by creating a vision for yourself, rather than a “to do” list. What do you aspire to in the coming year? What do you want to be, to do, to have by the end of 2020? One method of finding answers to these questions is the One-Word process as proposed in the book “One Word That Will Change Your Life” published in 2014 by authors Jon Gordon, Jimmy Page and Dan Britton. To understand this process, it helps to think about what it’s not. I think about this way: “In the beginning was the word” … NOT the New Year’s resolution, NOT the list of goals, NOT the intentions,

To find materials for your vision board page through several magazines. Cut out words, phrases, and pictures that catch your attention and fit with your theme. Don’t think too hard about this; let your intuition be your guide. The results may surprise you as you discover lots of material relevant to your 2020 vision. Paste or glue your findings, and any other decorations or photos you want, onto your board. You won’t know how it’s going to look until it’s done, but rest assured, it will be perfect for you; and if you do this with a group, everyone’s will be different!
When resolutions … are long forgotten, one word will stick! It’s easy to remember … your theme for the year. Your vision board will inspire you to live out your word of the year and achieve the results you desire. To get the most out of the process, display your vision board in a prominent place where you will see it every day. Spend some time daily reflecting on your vision for your life. Allow yourself to feel as if your vision has already been achieved. The emotional component is key, so stay with that feeling as long as you can. Then take inspired action. It’s not magic, but it can feel that way when you really live it out! Track your progress in a journal or on a chart.
