As we continue to move forward and adjust to our new normal, we want you to know that we are here for you as well. We want to know and share the wonderful ways those in our community are stepping up to help others or are forging paths to create something new. Despite our different situations, we are all in this together and we are stronger with one another than we are alone.

We truly have some talented gentlemen in our midst, and we’ve taken this issue to highlight a few of them, getting to know who they are and how they make philanthropy a priority. The Great Outdoors A MAN'S PLACE IS IN THE (OUTDOOR) KITCHEN

10

Naples Lifestyle | June 2020

NAPLES WEATHER ALLOWS RESIDENTS TO ENJOY THEIR BACKYARDS YEAR ROUND. That means an outdoor kitchen is a must. Ruth Schuster has been creating beautiful homes in the greater Naples area for more than 28 years. “I’d have to say nearly every client I meet with asks for an outdoor kitchen design. It’s ideal for entertaining and creates a space for all to gather. When I ask men what they are looking for, it isn’t necessarily an area where they want to be able to show off their culinary skills. It’s more of a place to hang out with their buddies and sharing a few beers.” Schuster was going for the ‘wow’ factor when designing this Naples open air kitchen. The lighting sconces and backsplash really make a statement. The backsplash, ten feet in height, is made of concrete hexagon tile, giving the area a vintage look that almost appears new again and you can see it from every part of the house. The appliances, including the 36” gas grill, are stainless steel. The countertops are granite. The stucco on the hood vent matches the house, giving it a clean look. The client wanted the exterior of their home to follow the interior. And they wanted teak furniture. Schuster says natural teak is durable and naturally water resistant, making it a good choice. It doesn’t need to be sealed or stained. It weathers beautifully, aging to a silvery grey tone. Schuster selected Cypress Tongue and Groove solid wood paneling for the overhead ceiling. Once it ages, it will mirror the dining table in color. “The outdoor kitchen is the new ‘man-cave.’ There is really no limit to what you can do.” www.ruthschusterinteriors.com

OUR EDITOR SAT DOWN (REMOTELY) WITH FOUR MEN WHO CALL NAPLES HOME AND

WORK TO MAKE OUR COMMUNITY EVEN MORE VIBRANT. Whether they are giving back in their “spare” time or spending their days engaging with residents, we admire their spirit and positivity. We asked them each four questions.

01 Tell us about one or two men who inspired you during your life and career.

02 How do you blow off steam and relax?

03 Giving back is very important to us at Naples Lifestyle magazine. How do you share your gifts? 04 We pray that by the time this June issue hits mailboxes, we will all be out and about. Where will you go for a special dinner in Naples?

We would sit at the bar with a Tito’s on the rocks for me and a glass of red wine for Chris, and a NY strip steak cooked Pittsburgh medium rare with an Andre’s salad which we will share. 01 I worked for General Mills in sales and management for 39 years and had many men who were mentors, both in business and in my personal life. A person that’s inspired me in the Naples community is Norman Wedderburn, the president & CEO of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida. He’s very understanding of and dedicated to fulfilling the non-

profit’s mission to grant life-changing wishes for critically-ill children and is actively involved in the fundraising events I’ve been part of. He’s upbeat, positive, a good listener, and someone who left a successful law practice to lead a charitable organization he’s passionate about.

b o b d e s j a r d i n s

The entire Southern Florida chapter that Norm leads is very professional and dedicated. This group, along with my fellow volunteers, are the ones that make things happen for wish kids. 02 I enjoy music (the big band era specifically) and have played the drums for more than 70 years. I put myself through Alfred University in upstate New York with money earned as a drummer and still play in bands. The late Buddy Rich is one of my favorites and I like watching local jazz groups perform. 03 I’m honored to have had a variety of volunteer roles at Make-A-Wish, including wish granter, public speaker, and assisting with fundraising events like the “Wishmaker’s Ball” and “Walk for Wishes.” Wish granters are the volunteers who meet with families to help determine the sick child’s wish and then coordinate with Make-A-Wish staff to deliver the best possible experience. I’ve helped grant 65 wishes, none more memorable than the last one we completed before the coronavirus quarantine. Fourteenyear-old Renel wished for a drum set and we hatched an elaborate plan to surprise him at halftime of a Florida Gulf Coast University basketball game. We wheeled the kit out to him on the court, but only a few of us knew that the drums came to us unassembled and it was a race to get it set up in time for the big reveal. We made it with only a few moments to spare. 04 The Capital Grille. They were part of the restaurant group when I worked at General Mills.

It’s a great program that recognizes these kids with special award ceremonies with the Mayor and City Council. It makes you realize how important it is to teach children strong values and despite their young ages, they can make an impact on their community. 04 It’s very hard for me to choose just one place, 5th Avenue South has some of the best restaurants in the world. clay miller 01 The person who has inspired me during my life and career is my late father Walter Miller. My dad was an incredible man who was determined at an early age to make a difference in people’s lives. From his 10 year devotion to the Catholic priesthood to his 30 plus year career as a public school administrator, my dad stood tall in his community. The one quality, among many, that stood out to me was his humbleness. It was never about my dad and his accomplishments. It was about the people who benefitted from his successes. I’m forever grateful for my dad and I’ve always tried to echo that humble nature in my family life and career as a TV news anchor. 02 Family time and exercise is my way to blow off steam. I love watching my teen children in anything they do. My daughter is a cheerleader and my son plays high school baseball and soccer. I’m at peace sitting in the stands with my wife seeing our children succeed in what they love. I also try and get outside for long walks on local trails when I can. The combination of good music and sunshine does a lot to clear the head. Especially during the trying times we’ve been dealing with as a nation. 03 I have been blessed to be in a position that allows me to host charitable events throughout Southwest Florida. TB: I have been associated with the guys I work with now for about seven years since barber school. They really have become like family to me. We bicker like family (usually about what we are going to order for lunch) but I think we all feel a real close bond. Same goes for our clients. We opened 5th Avenue Barber back in 2015 and most of the same guys come in every few weeks and it’s always good to see them and hear their stories. Mike Milewski, Johnny Vee and I hope everyone has been safe and stayed healthy. NL: WHAT MAKES NAPLES A SPECIAL PLACE TO DO BUSINESS? TB: I have lived in Naples and Bonita Springs for about 20 years and it really has become home. I am originally from New York - so quite a difference (especially when I first moved here). I have always been a beach guy so that, and the

The city administrators have done a good job keeping out the urban sprawl and have kept it clean and beautiful with good roads. Finally, we have the greatest mix of clients from the very top of the business world, healthcare, city workers ...I can honestly say our barbers love our clients. I hope everyone has been safe and stayed healthy. I keep in touch with the Barbers and Esthetician, Kobie almost every day and they are all healthy,” says Tony.

NL: THIS IS JUNE AND WE’RE CELEBRATING FATHER’S DAY. TELL US ABOUT YOUR INFLUENCES. TB: Father’s Day has always been a little sad for me since my dad died of cancer when I was 18. He definitely influenced me though. He was a trumpet player in the big band era and played with some of those big bands in New York. He also was a hairdresser and owned a beauty parlor (that’s what they called them in those days). I followed in his footsteps. I was in a rock band in the 1960s called the TuneFul Trolley and we were pretty good, with an album on Capitol Records. I never thought I wanted to do hair when I was young and now it is my love. It all really started when I received my first hot towel shave in Sicily when I was in my 50’s ...that’s another story!
