LIFESTYLE LETTER

For Auld Lang Syne AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Asheville Lifestyle in 2019! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again.

already fast-forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over, and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold closely in your hearts and keep the new ones you create in the present for as long as you can. We’ll take your lead, and we can’t wait to see you next year!

WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE

10

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2019

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

FORSYTHIA Named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist, Forsythia is an early spring flowering shrub often found in gardens and parks. Forsythia are well-known for their resilience and tenacity as much as the bright, cheery yellow of the branches’ blooms.

12

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2019

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2019

FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE CELEBRATION OF THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of

the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-the-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

THE DRI NK S

Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

THE DECO R There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

THE SNACKS

Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation. WHAT YOU NEED + Cheese board or serving plate + Assortment of cheeses (We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere) PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!

Modern Wreath Alternatives CUSTOMIZED WREATHS TO MATCH YOUR STYLE

ARTICLE MELONY BARBER

24

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2019

FOR CENTURIES, WREATHS HAVE BEEN USED AS SYMBOLS OF FASHION, DÉCOR AND VICTORY. Today they serve as a decorative hanging greeter, a beautiful table scape or tiny bit of whimsy crowned on a child’s head. The tradition of the wreath also has a spiritual meaning. Since they have no beginning or end, they symbolize God’s eternity and mercy. Their green color represents hope and a new life. Regardless of how you see fit to utilize your wreath, a wreath can be used year-round to reflect your style.

Gold Ring Wreaths This holiday season, gold ring wreaths are an excellent way to be creative and show off your personality. Exposing the gold ring adds a modern twist on a traditional holiday decoration. First, choose your foliage. For classic holiday arrangements, we recommend eucalyptus or pine. Pine symbolizes everlasting life and love, and euca-

lyptus has a purifying effect eradicating negative energy. For color and texture, add berries, flowers or pinecones. Customize your wreath by adding final touches that fit your unique styles, such as ornaments, toys and ribbons. The sky is the limit. Let your imagination go wild. You can find supplies at your local craft store. There are three gold ring sizes to choose from— five, eight and ten inches; floral wire; scissors; foliage; texture; color; personal décor; ribbon; twine; fishing wire and hot glue. Layer your foliage of choice on the bottom of your gold ring, tying it down with floral wire. Add your texture with hot glue, securely fasten your adornments and tie a bow around the top.

The Elegant Olive Wreath Another wreath we are crazy about is simple yet sophisticated. It is the olive leaf wreath. Historically, the olive branch is a symbol of peace, which is perfect for the holidays. You will need olive tree foliage, floral clippers, wreath form, ribbon, twine or floral wire. Wrap the olive foliage around the wreath form and fasten it securely with the floral wire. Keep the foliage loose against the form for a more whimsical look. Make sure to attach the foliage securely once you have wrapped the form. Tie a bow at the top of your wreath with a festive ribbon, and adorn your wreath with bells or your favorite holiday ornament. Make sure to spray your wreath with a spray mister to prevent it from drying out during the holiday season. Sit back and enjoy your self-made living art with the help of Mother Nature. 26

“IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU DO OR WHERE YOU DO IT, AS LONG AS YOU CONSISTENTLY PUT IN THE WORK AND PROGRESSIVELY GET BETTER OVER TIME.” PEOPLE OFTEN OVERTHINK THEIR WORKOUT PROGRAM, ASSUMING THEY NEED HIGH-END EQUIPMENT AND HEAVY WEIGHTS TO ACHIEVE LASTING RESULTS. Not the case. In fact, there are only two things you need to see success with training: consistency and progression. It doesn’t matter what you do or where you do it, as long as you consistently put in the work and progressively get better over time. These four workouts will have your heart pumping and muscles working with little to no equipment. And the best part is you can do them in the comfort of your home! When performing with light weight or body weight, I reply on compound movements, which allow multiple muscles to work at the same time. This maximizes energy output, makes your body work harder and helps you see results faster. If you’re new to training, I recommend breaking these exercises down into single movements. Once you’ve mastered a movement, begin adding them together. The four exercises are one circuit. Complete the first exercise then rest for 20 to 30 seconds before moving to the next one. Do this until you’ve completed all four exercises. That’s one round! Start with three rounds, and as you get stronger, add more rounds. Document what you do so the next time you attempt it, you know how to improve. To progress, you have to get better over time, so try to push a little more each time you work out. WITH ITS ICONIC SILHOUETTE, TIMELESS DESIGN AND PEDIGREE OF PERFORMANCE, THE NEW 2020 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA MAINTAINS POLE POSITION AS IT ROLLS BOLDLY INTO A FUTURE HERE NOW. The interior brims with intuitive technology—the position of every button, grip and control carefully considered—and maintains the 911’s traditional strengths while exploring new possibilities, this model emphasizing the horizontal for operational comfort and enhanced concentration on the road. The new 911’s exterior innovations are also remarkable, particularly from behind. The rear window appears visually extended, merging almost by magic into the black tailgate grille. The new 911 also appears particularly athletic due to the differently sized wheels at the front and rear, a design that unites traditional and modern and ensures more dynamism on the road. Viewed from the front, the new 911 still speaks of its storied past. The fenders highlight the powerful geometry and design DNA. The newly designed front lid with its characteristic dynamic recess profiles—and its straight slope to the front fascia—is a nod to the 911 models of the first generation.
