Art, Craftsmanship & Love FEBRUARY IS A MONTH FOR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION — MAKING, COLLECTING, ADMIRING AND LEARNING. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. We hope you enjoy reading in this issue how Rachel Perkal of Epilogue Art in Long

Grove inspired a husband & wife team to create a one-of-a-kind ceramic art piece. We also hope you're inspired to visit an old favorite, DiPiero's Ristorante, serving up handcrafted classic Italian dishes in downtown Lake Zurich. Also in Lake Zurich, Copper Fiddle Distillery is forging a new trail in small batch spirits. Over in Barrington, old-world craftsmen at Caledonian, Inc. repair furniture and create new classics for families with discerning taste. These stories are about just a few of the local artisans sharing their craft, passion and self-expression. Perhaps by this time next year you, too, will have been inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love.

AROUND TOWN Later-stage symptoms include fits of rapid coughs followed by a high-pitched “whoop” sound, as well as vomiting and exhaustion after coughing fits. Anyone showing symptoms of pertussis should avoid going to school or work until they are evaluated by a healthcare provider and/or appropriate treatment is provided. The best way to protect against pertussis is by getting vaccinated. The Health Department offers the DTaP and Tdap vaccinations by appointment at its Community Health Centers throughout Lake Co. To make an appointment, call (847) 377-8800.

Kelley Gallt, Superintendent of District 95 Schools, said: “Based on my experiences with multiple stakeholders, including students, staff, and families, I am certainly shocked that this type of crime would take place within the boundaries of District 95, most especially during a time of holiday celebrations and joy for many cultures. While I do not believe that these messages of hate define our community, it is important for each of us to stand up against behaviors such as these. We are an inclusive, friendly and loving community and should expxect all individuals living in or visiting our district community to celebrate all that makes us unique and good. It is important to me that our district learning community understand that we will not tolerate hate messages nor actions of hate.”

COMMIT TO BETTER COMMUNICATIONS FOR A RELATIONSHIP THAT THRIVES
ARTICLE KIMBERLY BLAKER
COUPLES SPLIT UP FOR NUMEROUS DIFFERENT REASONS, RANGING FROM LACK OF COMMON INTERESTS, SIGNIFICANT LIFE CHANGES, MONEY ISSUES, CHEATING AND SEX. But one of the top reasons couples don’t survive is due to communication problems. It’s essential that couples understand the role communication styles play in marital discord. Throughout their relationship, many couples alienate each other as they try to communicate their needs. As misunderstandings escalate, even minor issues can turn into major ordeals. The reason for these serious disputes usually has more to do with the way couples communicate than what they are trying to say. Fortunately, some factors can be changed if couples put forth the effort, explain Stanley and Howard Markman, coauthors of Fighting for Your Marriage: Positive Steps for Preventing Divorce and Preserving a Lasting Love. These include improving unrealistic beliefs about marriage, low commitment levels and difficulties working as a team. Negative communication styles, poor communication skills for handling disagreements, and attitude differences regarding important issues can also be overcome. Changing old patterns isn’t easy and requires work. But learning to communicate with your partner effectively can be achieved. Many therapists teach clients communication techniques that can make arguing, yelling and avoidance a thing of the past. Not only do couples learn to communicate more effectively, but they may also develop deeper bonds and intimacy. This can have a lasting effect on a relationship. One technique sometimes referred to as Intentional Dialogue is used in Imago Relationship Therapy. Through this technique, couples learn how to talk to their partner, share feelings and really hear and understand each other. If communication problems are impairing your relationship, don’t wait for irreparable damage. Keep in mind that for some couples, therapy may be required. Finally, as most therapists point out, including the Markmans, “Good marriages take work. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not how much you love each other that can best predict the future of your relationship, but how conflicts and disagreements are handled.” Learning better communication techniques in a relationship, or before misunderstandings escalate, will dramatically increase chances for a successful, long-lasting relationship and many Happy Valentine’s Days to come. When the sale came up last year, I thought it was a good idea to keep it in the community. Andrew: As a food and beverage manager I’ve always sourced the products I want for my hotels and restaurants by flavor and demand. Now we can create our own flavors and our own demand. SWL: HOW HAS IT BEEN CLIMBING THE LEARNING CURVE? Andrew: Luckily, we had the knowledge of a Master Distiller, Rob Scaramella, available from the beginning. When the three of us met we knew quite quickly we had a Jim Iverhouse and Andrew Macker. Tastings and tours are available.
bright future together. Rob’s ideas were a big part of Copper Fiddle’s initial successes. Now with a bigger voice the sky is the limit. SWL: WHAT WILL STAY THE SAME AT COPPER FIDDLE? Jim: The name and address. (Laughs.) Andrew: I second that! There’s a whole new vibe here. The cocktails are delicious, service accommodating and friendly, and the live entertainment is fantastic. SWL: TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE CHANGES. Andrew: We have new recipes for bourbon whiskey and rum. The gin is fantastic and will stay the same but with a new mash bill. We’ve already launched a partnership with Franco’s Pescheria, who is providing us our own menu. Guests can order here at the distillery and Franco’s will deliver meals hot and fresh. To learn about new product releases just follow us on Facebook or Instagram. Jim: We’re also planning an expansion of the facility. We’re aiming for mid-to-late 2020. CONTINUED >

HIDDEN TREASURES IN BARRINGTON THE MOST FUN PART OF THE ADVENTURE WAS THAT IT JUST DIDN’T WANT TO STOP. Expert craftsman Niko Dilo just couldn’t keep from flipping through his iPhone, sharing photos of the many masterfully restored antiques and reproductions: so many examples of striking transformations, from decay and damage to elegance restored and ravages-of-time defied. The third-generation owner of Calendonian, Inc., Barrie Heath, chuckled. “Niko’s very proud of the work we do here,” quickly adding, “And so am I.” This family business was founded in 1941 by Heath’s maternal grandmother, Ethel Harris, as an antiques and second-hand furniture store. After WWII’s conclusion, Heath’s father and two uncles came into the business, evolving it into antiques and reproductions (copies of period antique furniture) made and imported from

England, as well as accessories, paintings, and the whole gamut of decorative objects to accent the furniture. Heath and his team continue to buy elegant, high-end English furniture that’s in good shape and restore it to pristine condition for resale. That involves closing up any cracks in the surface, replacing missing veneers, repairing/updating the insides of pieces, and

replacing drawer runners as needed. As an example, Heath showed a restored piece from the 18th century with drawers that now slide smoothly and look as good as they did 240 years ago. They work diligently to preserve the old-finish look that’s mellowed and aged on its own, particularly with English pieces. This includes restoring the hardware (handles, etc.) and even the locks many pieces include. Dilo, a 19-year employee at Caldonian, has created many a new key for centuries-old locks, showing me an example lock (vintage ca. 1780) restored with key to match.

Accurate, professional restoration requires an extensive knowledge of the construction methods of each period of furniture being restored—a knowledge set that also helps Caledonian accurately estimate when and where individual pieces were built, and ensures that they employ the same techniques during restoration that were used to build the original. They use a special brand of glue that keeps a high veneer, and which also is a “reversible glue” which allows any joints secured by this glue to be taken apart later if needed (via steaming or water injection) to enable easy future repairs. enables Caledonian to follow the established best practice for repairing antiques that anything done to a piece should be reversible. Ten years ago Caledonian relocated from its previous location on the North Shore to Heath’s hometown of Barrington, when the onset of the recession dovetailed with a decline in interest in traditional furniture and the crash of the housing market. With people staying in their homes and moving much less frequently, the impact on furniture sales was significant, requiring a refocus of Caledonian’s business to ensure its continued success in a changing market. “In our new business model, we’ve organized a very low overhead operation that allows us to offer high quality and service at a true value for our

customers,” Heath said. “Our antiques represent really good value today; they’re often less expensive than reproductions.” “It’s a fun business, because every piece is different,” Heath added. “We come into work every day not knowing what road restoring our next piece will take us down.” For online shopping convenience Caledonian maintains an internet presence, posting new offerings to its Facebook page (@CaledonianFurnitureandAntiques), as well at their website (CaledonianInc.com) including their currently available pieces with descriptions and pricing. COLLABORATING ON A NEW CHICAGO CLASSIC
IT TAKES A TEAM TO CREATE COLLECTIBLES CELEBRATING OUR KIND OF TOWN
Ferguson tops out the 9-foot ceramic sculpture.
Ferguson carefully builds Sheep Tower.
I HAVE BEEN IN THE BUSINESS OF WORKING WITH ARTISTS, ART AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FOR MY ENTIRE CAREER SO YOU MIGHT SAY I’VE “SEEN IT ALL.” There is nothing like the fun and excitement of coming across something new that I know my customers will like. Several times a year I’ll travel out-of-town to scout new talent. On one such trip to Atlanta in 2018 I met Dan Ferguson. I was instantly attracted to the bright colors and whimsical nature of his work. Dan and his wife Nisha are originally from Toronto but relocated to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico with two young sons in 2001. The artistic collaboration between Dan and Nisha is dynamic; they sign all pieces as “DaNisha.” Their works include functional figurines, bowls, sculptures and dramatic totems. Dan creates the sculptural bodies which support the colorful and painterly images and color-filled stories that are found in the bowls, vessels and characters that make up so many of their designs. He is such a gifted sculptor as one can see in the attitudes and poses of the fanciful animals he ARTICLE RACHEL PERKAL PHOTOGRAPHY TOBIN FRALEY 22

Color & style add to the whimsy of DaNisha's Chicago.
In addition to our exclusive Chicago sculpture, we also have DaNisha’s amazing collection of bowls that also celebrate Chicago. Our customers and visitors love the miniature figures of animals that are a staple of their work. One is of a rhinoceros with a bird buddy hitching a ride on his back. Another is of a hippopotamus balancing a globe that opens into a vessel for little treasures. These are just two examples of the whimsy they craft. Thinking more grandly? We have on display a nine-foot tower of sheep by the Fergusons that always evokes a smile. A real balancing act, this tower of silly sheep is perfect for a four-season room or entry way. It needs to be seen to be believed. About the Author: Rachel Perkal is the owner of Epilogue Arts, 130 Old McHenry Road in downtown Long Grove; EpilogueArt.com. CRAFTING A LAKE ZURICH TRADITION OPERATED BY THE NARCISI FAMILY FOR 36 YEARS, DIPIERO’S FEATURES FINE ITALIAN CUISINE IN A CLASSIC SETTING.
I HAD A FANTASTIC DINNER AT DIPIERO’S RISTORANTE RECENTLY, BUT THE DELICIOUS FOOD AND WINE DON’T BEGIN TO DESCRIBE MY EXPERIENCE. I met a woodcrafter who handcarves smoking pipes for friends and family; a former insurance salesman with 15 years in the industry; a partner in The Bear (a pioneering Chicago music club) where artists like Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul & Mary performed in the early Sixties; and a local restaurateur with a loyal clientele. As it turns out all those folks are just one very interesting fellow named Bob Narcisi. Bob purchased DiPiero’s a decade after its opening; the building in downtown Lake Zurich dates back to the 1930s. He kept the restaurant’s name and made upgrades to the bar and dining areas. The menu went from mostly pizza to full, upscale Italian. As success came Narcisi was able to buy the old telephone building just to the south, which now handles their carryout, delivery, and off-premise catering business, as well as two adjoining proper-

As long as you’re at DiPiero’s, you’ve got to watch your language.’ Some of them didn’t understand that, but we wanted to establish a different kind of business. I’ve got to say, I think we have the best clientele in the area now, and many who say they think of us as their favorite restaurant.” CONTINUED >

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED)
Bob Narcisi (left) with Howard Seedorf and Cheryl Marchese of N-Jet.
It wasn’t difficult to see why. On this January weekday evening as tables began to fill, many guests dropped by to say hello and chat with Bob all while he kept a watchful eye on everything. “We’re pretty traditional in what we do. We have a few signature dishes: Our baked clams, we do them the best of anywhere. Our onepound pork chops, double-boned, are definitely a signature item, as well as our pizzas, and our Chicken Vesuvio and veal dishes.” Bob made it clear that every dish on the menu is treated with DiPiero’s legendary commitment to quality: “I don’t think you should ever be able to go into a restaurant and order the ‘wrong thing’.” His son Bobby serves as expediter, quality control, and helps design many DiPiero’s dishes. As if on cue, Jimmy Narcisi (Bob’s younger son, who manages the front-of-the-house) served up two dishes proving the point: their Caesar Salad, beautifully crafted from artisan romaine with anchovy, house-made croutons and dressing, followed by the Pork Chop Costoletto, a double-boned pork chop pounded out thin to the size of a small-to-medium pizza, first breaded and pan-fried, then oven-baked with marinara sauce and provolone cheese on top. 30

“My chef’s been with me for 32 years,” Bob shared, followed by a list of several others with tenures of a decade or more. “Our employees have a lot of say in the company. They know our customers and know the right thing to do for them. We have customers still with us from the first day we opened, and servers who’ve taken care of them for 20 years.” Bob credits his family’s hospitality business skills to his father, who emigrated from Italy at the age of 10, graduated first in his class at Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, and went into business with his father at the family-owned grocery in Chicago. Over the next two decades he would go on to purchase the liquor store across the street, a 30-lane bowling alley (the first in Illinois to install automatic pinsetters), and (eventually) the entire block. Bob’s early connection to Lake Zurich was the family’s summer home on Route 12 (the future location of Fritzl’s Restaurant). “I never spent a The daily specials menu board.
summer in the city until I was 16. We spent each summer here until Labor Day.” After selling his real estate agency, while searching for a business opportunity in the area, he stopped for lunch at DiPiero’s, learned the owner was interested in selling, and the rest is Lake Zurich culinary history. DiPiero’s Ristorante, 17 E. Main Street, Lake Zurich, 847.438.3253. Open Monday - Sunday, 4 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.; DiPierosRestaurant.com.
