“A BOOK IS A MAGICAL THING THAT LETS YOU TRAVEL TO FARAWAY PLACES WITHOUT EVER LEAVING YOUR CHAIR,” WRITES AUTHOR KATRINA MAYER. And good thing since with summer plans dashed, many homebound travelers are creating reading lists in place of itineraries this year. In the spirit of armchair travel, Cassie Clemens, owner of Roundabout Books in Bend, suggests a few titles that transport a reader’s imagination to far-flung destinations without leaving home. “When we open a book, we are transported to other worlds and new ideas,” says Cassie. “We can grow, learn, and live in a new place, experience another life, even if it’s just for a few hours at a time. Sometimes that’s all we need.” RoundaboutBooks.com

BEND’S TRADITIONAL FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

ARTICLE SUZANNE JOHNSON

SCREAMING SPIDERS, CRACKLING HORSETAILS, OR GOLDEN WEEPING WILLOWS—WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF FIREWORK? Bend fireworks fans get their fill of the pyrotechnics at the annual Fourth of July show on Pilot Butte. This year, when many community events are cancelled for the sake of social distancing, the fireworks show promises to bring the community together, even as we sit apart. And according to Matt Thomas, a driving force behind the fireworks display, this year’s effort is taking the show to a whole new level. Most years, Independence Day in Bend overflows 14

been dormant for 190,000 years. The circular drive and hiking trails to the summit offer a panoramic view of the city of Bend and the Cascade peaks, but access to the park is closed during the fireworks set-up and show, for safety reasons. Local company Sure Shot Fireworks has taken on the planning, design, and production of this year’s display. Owner Gary Mattison has worked in pyrotechnics for more than a decade. “I can guarantee a lot of oohs and ahhs at this year’s show,” he laughs. Mattison’s preferred style is to send the fireworks in waves, varying up the colors and patterns, but allowing no moments of black sky. “I like to create a false ending, when people think the show is over, before I light up the real finale,” he adds. Producing the show requires help from many. Along with the fire and police departments, the Department of Forestry and Oregon State Parks plan security and logistics. Additional local businesses provide on-site water trucks, and even the Boys Scouts pitch in by cleaning up debris on the butte after the show. The biggest fan of Bend’s fireworks show may be Fire Marshal Larry Medina, of the Bend Fire Department. “Surprisingly, it’s the quietest part of the day for the fire and police departments. We have such a great show here that fewer people want to light off illegal fireworks,” he says. In past years, illegal fireworks and careless use of legal fireworks have caused numerous injuries and property damage. “Fireworks are something to leave to the pros,” Medina emphasizes. But Medina, like the rest of the group, mostly sees the fireworks show as a gift to the community. “Fireworks are a shared experience that we all enjoy, no matter any differences we might have,” he says. Especially in a time when so much is uncertain, this long-standing tradition still brings people together to celebrate our history.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

YOUR BEST SELF BEGIN THE UPWARD SPIRAL OF HEALTH BY LOOKING (AND FEELING) CONFIDENT WITHIN YOUR SKIN

SHANNON MILLER IS A PROPONENT OF OPTIMAL HEALTH THAT RUNS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP—IT STARTS WITH THE BELIEF THAT WE CAN ALL BE THE BEST VERSION OF OURSELVES. An esthetician since 2008, and founder of Skin Firm in Bend, she upholds that philosophy by supporting the way we care for the body’s biggest organ: our skin. She grew up being fascinated by the science of the epidermis, and today her area of emphasis is on non-invasive treatments that show results. She moved to Bend because she loved what the community stands for, and for how people treat each other. Especially during challenging times, the environment offers many ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and at Skin Firm, she uses technology to reduce cellulite because she believes we should all feel confident to put on a pair of shorts as we hike, stand-up paddle and enjoy the outdoors. “It’s easier to get moving when you feel better about yourself,” says Miller, “And when people feel good about how they look, they tend to take better care of their body as a whole—it becomes an upward spiral and easier

to maintain.” She continues, “Our bodies are all unique and wonderful systems. The better you treat yourself, the healthier you will look and feel.” In the Q & A below, Miller shares what she has learned about being kind to

ourselves and on new ways to treat cellulite to look and feel our best: WE HEAR ABOUT THE VALUE OF SELF CARE. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR

Sha nn o

YOU AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

good nutrition, drinking enough water and stress reduction. Getting started is usually the hardest part, so if it can be started with a relaxing and effective treatment like massage, the other parts can fall into place. WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CELLULITE?

Eighty-90 percent of women have some degree of cellulite, usually on

thighs and buttocks. Cellulite is made of mostly fat, but is not a smooth fatty tissue. Cellulite is a combination of fat, water and toxins trapped in a net of connective tissue. When the body has circulatory and elimination problems, the connective tissue loses its strength and unmetabolized fats and waste become trapped beneath the skin, causing a dimpled appearance. Lifestyle choices that contribute to the formation of cellulite are processed foods

containing additives, dehydration, lack of exercise, stress and exposure to free rad-

regular cardiovascular exercise, and reduce stress.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW VACUUM MASSAGE THERAPY WORKS ON THE BODY?

Synergie Vacuum Massage physically manipulates collagen

fibers and connective tissue to increase metabolism to an area by increasing local blood circulation. Positive pressure causes the blood vessels to constrict (tighten) and suction causes them to dilate (open). This FDA-approved technology stimulates subcutaneous tissues which can change the fat content of cells; eliminating excess fat and toxins through the lymphatic system. Synergie cellulite treatments dramatically tone and tight skin, resulting in smoother texture and reduction in appearance of cellulite. There are many health benefits to lymphatic drainage massage including stress reduction, edema relief, strengthened immunity and enhanced skin health.

WHAT LIFESTYLE ADAPTATIONS DO YOU RECOMMEND TO OPTIMIZE BODY-AND SELF-CONFIDENCE?

“Our bodies are all unique and wonderful systems. The

healthier

you will look and feel.” —Shannon Miller

Stop comparing yourself and your body to the images we all see on TV and in beauty magazines, they are unrealistic and most likely are unhealthy. We are all beautifully flawed. Find ways to focus on what you do love about your body, even if in the moment it is just that your limbs are intact. When you hear negative self talk, stand up for yourself like you would a close friend. Start small: If you know you are going to have cake for dessert, try to order a healthy dinner. If you want that second glass of wine, have a full glass of water first. Be kind to yourself and remember that your body is home for your soul. CityLifestyle.com/Bend

OUR TOWN

KIDS Center: H e a r i n g, H e l p i n g, Healing

EVERY CHILD, YOUTH, AND NON-OFFENDING ADULT WHO WALKS THROUGH THE DOOR OF KIDS CENTER IS EMBRACED WITH WARMTH AND POSITIVITY. The medical model child abuse intervention center, the only one of its kind in Central Oregon, provides head-to-toe medical exams, forensic interviews, and family support services for children who are suspected to have suffered abuse, all in a child-friendly environment that encourages people to seek the organization’s services rather than shy away from the difficult conversations surrounding child abuse. KIDS Center’s Medical Director, Nancy Heavilin, describes the inviting nature of the organization, located in Bend, as one that jives

tion and treatment of child abuse. “Throughout its 26 and processes to support healing,” says Heavilin. “Our choices are deliberate, from paint hue on the wall to snacks offered. Children’s health, safety, and resilience are at the heart of our mission. This is reflected in the warmth of our front desk receptionist’s smile, the way our family advocates light up when greeting families and the tunes our medical director inadvertently sings throughout exams,” she says. Cork & Barrel, Central Oregon’s largest wine event and a fundraiser for KIDS Center, mirrors the uplifting spirit of the organization and brings the reality of child abuse in the area to light in a way that is digestable to guests. Held every July at Broken Top Club, Cork & Barrel is a three-day wine and food event series: mission moments are threaded throughout the tent; winemakers from the guest region—different every year—are wellversed in how KIDS Center helps the community; silent and live wine auction KIDS Center provides family support.

packages entice guests to give back to KIDS Center, a privately-funded nonprofit. Cork & Barrel raises upwards from

20 percent of the net revenue of KIDS Center every year. This year Cork & Barrel has pivoted to a series of virtual wine and food events, culminating in an evening of philanthropy by way of a virtual, live auction and paddle raise on Saturday, July 18.
