“SEEK THE CHALLENGE”

This means that we don’t want our players shying away from something that may be difficult or look insurmountable. We want them to be able to blast through fears and worries and be comfortable being uncomfortable to go head on into a challenge and not be afraid to fail.

“ENJOY THE RIDE” I implemented this because I want our players to understand that hard work can be fun and to enjoy the journey of life. Enjoy each day, enjoying each practice, or each moment of getting better. Enjoy your friends, and be a positive uplifting voice in the community. Coach Novak’s core belief is that when you make a commitment to a team for a season, you’re learning how to commit to a job, or a career, or commit to a spouse. There are life lessons through all aspects of the season and dynamics within the team, and challenges that you will face that will shape you into being a great young man. “That’s what we’re teaching. We’re teaching them how important it is to be on time, to be dependable, to be trustworthy, to be strong mentally. having a senior moment SENIOR PORTRAIT TIPS FROM AWARD WINNING LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHER LINDSAY BORG ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY BORG

18

Gilbert Lifestyle | August 2020

SENIOR PHOTOGRAPHS ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF THIS AMAZING FINAL YEAR OF SCHOOL. It cements forever who they were at this critical part of their lives. Who have they become during these 12 years of school, and how will you remember this time. As parents of seniors, it is important that this time be special for you as well as your child, so we have enlisted the help of Lindsay Borg, award winning and nationally featured lifestyle photographer, to help navigate this crucial time. TIPS FOR HAVING A GREAT SENIOR PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE: CHOOSE THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER These days, digital photography is very accessible, but keep in mind that doesn’t mean everyone with a digital camera is a professional. It’s important to find someone with the portfolio, skills, style and portrait packages you are looking for. Choose an Artist that can provide exactly what you need. CHECK OUT THEIR PORTFOLIO Make sure their style matches the overall look you are wanting. It is important to find an artist who has a consistent editing style. Over processing or the use of heavy editing will lose its appeal over time. You want your images to be timeless. BE SPECIFIC Communicate what you want out of your senior portrait experience your photographer. Whether it is unlimited outfit changes, long session times, a unique location or package options TRUST! Trust your photographer’s eye. What they see might not be what you see at the time, but after all, that’s why you hired a professional! LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! You want OPTIONS! Arizona has beautiful outdoor locations that are accessible year-round...parks, lakes, the Salt River, and tons of downtown art and urban settings. A local park like the Riparian Preserve or Downtown Gilbert can be a very versatile location for a senior. MAKE IT A GET AWAY A short day trip to Sedona’s red rocks or the aspen trees in Flagstaff might be exactly what you need to set your portrait session apart from the rest. Most photographers offer a travel option for an additional fee. CONTINUED >

TREND SE T TER (CONTINUED)

WHAT TO WEAR! (MOST ASKED QUESTION) The answer is simple; you want to look like yourself. You want to be comfortable. Choose outfits that YOU would wear! Outfits that make YOU feel good! If you are uncomfortable, it will be obvious in your images. HOW TO CHOOSE OUTFITS Bring at least one everyday casual outfit, one outfit that you know mom is going to love, and one outfit that is fun and on trend. College tees and your high school cap and gowns are always encouraged. WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE Incorporate everything that makes you who YOU are like dance, sports, instruments, pets and hobbies. You really only have one shot to get this right. WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK? Booking your session and your session date are not the same thing. A huge misconception is that if you book in the summer, your session will be in the summer. That is not the case at all. Senior portrait sessions are usually booked 6 months in advance. That means you book in late summer to early fall for your senior's winter through spring semesters. FIND OUT THE YEARBOOK SUBMISSION RULES This can vary depending on yearbook and Senior ad deadlines. Find out from your school. They are all different. If it is required that you use your schools provided photographer for yearbook photos but you still want a senior session that offers an outdoor location with outfit changes, your date options are a bit more flexible. BOOK EARLY!! Booking sooner than later is always the best. Spring in Arizona is prime photography season! You don’t want to miss the chance at booking the photographer of your dreams. The most sought after photographers spots fill quickly!! DID WE MENTION BOOK EARLY!! Trying to book 30 days before graduation just isn't a good idea. You want at least 45-60 days to get your graduation announcements completed and sent out to friends and family. STAY SAFE Remember even during your photo shoots to stay safe Most photographers have the proper equipment (longer lenses) to keep a safe distance from you. Wash your hands frequently and wear a mask when needed.

social media What’s the point if you can’t share your perfect senior images with your friends and family, right? Make sure you check with your photographer (and your contract) on how they would like this done. The Puppy Process

HOW ONE LOCAL GOLDENDOODLE BREEDER TEACHES HER KIDS LIFE LESSONS THROUGH RESPONSIBLE BREEDING

THE PASSION FOR DOG BREEDING WAS INSTILLED IN ELISE COX FROM AN EARLY AGE. On a 40 acre farm in Buckeye, her father bred Great Dane puppies and Arabian horses. She grew up helping mothers prepare for birth, training and showing dogs. Cox learned about the miracle of life from staying up nights ushering litters of puppies into the world. With her father they shifted focus for a time. She began jet setting around the world focusing on breeding and showing Arabian horses. When she moved back to Arizona she decided to settle in Gilbert. She discovered Goldendoodles back in 2017, when Zuzu entered her life. “In the process of me falling in love with the Goldendoodle breed, realizing what an amazing family dog they are, especially the non shed aspect to them is incredible!” Cox said. Cox knew she had a passion for teaching the values of raising animals responsibly to her children. When she married her husband 2 years ago Cox decided to go all in on the Doodles. Her goal was to spread the love for this amazing family dog while teaching her five kids the same lessons about “the birds and the bees” that she learned growing up. CULINARY CREATIONS

A NEW TAKE ON INTERMEDIATE FASTING THAT WILL TRANSFORM THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT DIETING

eat like a bear

ARTICLE MACKENZIE BELLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Gilbert Lifestyle | August 2020

RIDICULOUSLY LARGE

SALAD

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT BEARS YOU OFTEN THINK ABOUT HOW THEY ARE FEROCIOUS HUNTERS HUNTING DEER AND CATCHING 20 POUND SALMON WITH BARE PAWS, BUT WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT REALIZE IS THAT BEARS ARE OMNIVORES. Their diets consist of grasses, roots, and berries. I learned about this diet when I wanted a way to incorporate intermediate fasting with a way to make keto food without all the work. This is a great summer diet because when it is over 100 degrees salads are the perfect way to stay cool. The two pillars of this diet are intermittent fasting and keto. Simply pick your protein, cut up your veggies, fill up a large salad bowl and top with a low carb salad dressing. Then you give yourself one hour to eat as much of your salad as you can. The execution is extremely easy. The only thing you have to worry about is what you want in your ridiculously big salad. Here is my go to salad recipe for a fresh and easy giant salad. As always check with your doctor before starting any diet. For more information, check out eatlikeabear.life

INGREDIENTS + 8oz grilled chicken + 1 avocado + 1/2 cucumber + 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese + 1/2 head of romaine lettuce + 14 sliced radishes + 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes + 1 cup peeled sunflower seeds + 1 cup of cilantro lime vinaigrette

DIRECTIONS Once you have grilled your chicken and chopped up all of your veggies. I want to make a note that by including sunflower seeds into your salad you add an excellent source of vitamin E and the salty crunch changes the taste of the salad as a whole. The sunflower seeds are by far my favorite part. Throw all of it into your large salad mixing bowl. Toss thoroughly. Set your timer for one hour. Eat as much as you can. you don’t need to finish the whole thing on your first few tries. It is a lot of food for one person. The goal is to eat once a day and fast for the rest. This is no easy task. Have no fear as a beginner you can save what you don’t finish and eat it when you are feeling hungry later that night. As you continue this diet you’ll find it is easier to fast for 12 hours at a time. All the ingredients in these salads are up to you to decide. RENOVATE & REFINE

PURR-FECT PLACES CREATING A CUTE SPACE FOR YOUR CAT AND SAVE YOUR HOUSE

ARTICLE MACKENZIE BELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I LOVE MY CATS, BUT WHAT I DON’T LOVE IS THEM TEARING UP ALL MY FURNITURE AND PLANTS. So the quandary is how can I decorate my space while also having room for my cats to do what cats do? You want to have that cute fabric couch without claws ripping it to shreds. You want to have long hanging house plants without worrying about then being scratched up and chewed on. Your nice curtains that bring the whole room together? Targets for serious scratching. Well heres a few tips that can save your home from being torn up by our favorite fluffy criminals. There are a few universal things that cats love. Heights, sunshine, bells, and chewing on plants. When you are starting out your cool cat corner try to pick a spot that gets a lot of warm, direct sunlight. These are the areas of your home your cat will be most attracted to. Once you have selected where you will create their happy zone, invest in a tall cat house. 30

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED) Preferably one with closed compartments your cat can go into hide and destress. In addition to the cat house hang some cute shelves near different levels of the cat house to give your pet more options are aerial recognizance or lounging, depending on your cat's needs. Now that you have designated your cats zen zone you can start to decorate. The more things you designate for your cat to play with the less likely they are to get into things they shouldn’t. I say less likely because as all cat owners know cats don’t always follow our best laid plans. You can hang bells and yarn from the underside of the shelves near their cat house to keep them entertained. You can even get creative and make hanging yarn art to give your corner a more cohesive and intentional look. Adding a couple of scratching posts around places in your house promotes a cat to give into their animal instinct while focusing that energy away from your lovely furniture. While most of the other tips focus on your cats corner, I suggest investing in multiple scratching posts if your cat is lazy like mine. They won’t want to walk to their post to scratch. They'll go to the nearest thing to them to get their scratchies out. Another great investment is cat grass. It's perfect for redirecting your cat's urge to chomp on all your lovely house plants. Make sure you keep the cat grass in a place close to the ground. It is not recommended to place it on shelves or on top of the cat house. Your cat will knock it off and create a mess you will have to sweep up. Not ideal. It is also a good tip to invest in hanging plants to further prevent any damage to your plants. You can create different places around your house for your cat. This will help when your cat wants to be in the same room as you. Making this dedicated section or sections of your house will help combat against any damage to the rest of your house.
