HELLO! I am incredibly excited about taking the role as the new publisher of Green Hills Lifestyle. As a Nashville native and neighbor, I hope to bring to you a vibrant, hyper-local publication that showcases some of the best and unique things about our community. We've made just a couple changes. We'll be including many more areas of Belle Meade now. Our coverage will focus primarily on Belle Meade and Green Hills since that's where we all hang (and the magazine is distributed). Welcome to all of our new 205 families. Our first issue is all about food and drink. We welcome a new pizza joint and preview the reinvention of Curt Cole's old Firefly Grille space. Be sure and check out the cocktail created exclusively for our Green Hills/Belle Meade Lifestyle family. It's delicious. Food is not only nourishing (and appetizing) but it brings people together—whether it's a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed "pie-down" with coworkers, a friend's monthly gathering of women or even a casual weeknight meal with family.

“Life is short, make it sweet” became the business motto of Nashville native Robin Tickle Stromatt when she opened Cakepop Heaven, a cozy local bakery and coffee shop, last August in Belle Meade. “I’ve always been a baker and loved to cook,” says the former full-time legal assistant. “People asked me to make them this and that, and one of the most popular items was the cake pops I made. At the same time, I realized cake pops were becoming the new go-to cupcake. More people kept telling me I should open my own bakery.” Then, Robin says God dropped an opportunity in her lap when a mutual friend told her husband, Mark, that he’d like to be a partner in a bakery, should she decide to ever open one. “I didn’t want any regrets in life, so I stepped out in faith, quit my job, and we opened the bakery. Now I’m living my dream,” Robin says. Cakepop Heaven team members specialize in cake pops, pie pops, muffins, cookies and custom cakes. Their desserts are purchased for many types of occasions, including weddings, birthdays, showers, anniversaries, graduations, corporate functions, school events, family reunions, baby gender reveals or other special celebrations. Each cake pop is hand-rolled, dipped in decadent Ghiradelli chocolate and decorated with swirls, sprinkles or custom toppings, then hand-wrapped and tied with ribbon. The snack on a stick is available in varieties, such as Peanut Butter Passion, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Red Velvet Delight, Carrot Cake Craze, Oreo Cheesecake, Lemon Lovers, Vanilla Ice, Strawberry Swirl, Triple Chocolate and a Gluten-Free Chocolate. Their cake pops can be customized and shaped to match event themes, with stand-up or flat bottoms, and presented from inside special containers. The pie pops come in apple, peach and cherry. A popular muffin there is blueberry streusel, and Robin says she’s likely to bring back last season’s popular pumpkin spice flavor muffin with cinnamon chips and a cinnamon glaze. The shop sells gourmet cookies such as white chocolate chip cranberry. Current special treats spotlight Harper’s Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sammich or Gigi’s Nanner Puddin’. “We love helping your vision become a long-lasting memory,” explains Robin, who led by example when she named her most popular special treat after her granddaughter, Harper. It helps to be creative when approaching cake pops. “Anyone can make a cupcake, but not everyone can make a cake pop,” she says. Cakepop Heaven also serves coffee from local roaster Stay Golden, along with espresso, lattes, hot chocolate, iced tea or iced coffee, soda, milk and water. Robin says she may have underestimated the emotional benefits of seeing the joy customers get from the bakery products and unique gifts created. “People are so happy, it’s literally like they’re getting a little piece of heaven. It’s an escape for people from everyday life, and these items bring such smiles to faces.” “We’re not just a pickup bakery,” she reminds. “We’re a cozy place to sit, unwind and recharge. We also have an outside patio.” A bonus is that Robin introduced a customer rewards program in observa-

WHICH BRIXX WINS?
Pizza Picking ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY DANA TROGLEN
THERE’S A PIZZA PLACE IN TOWN WHERE YOUNG DINERS CAN TRACE AN OUTLINE AROUND ONE HAND ON A PIECE OF PAPER WHILE TRYING TO HOLD A PIECE OF DELICIOUS CHEESY PIE IN THE OTHER. It’s a perfect place to sit on the patio during autumn, catching a slight breeze, while basking in a crisp, clean fall football-type of day or evening. Pizza is an obsession many people share. In the case of Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, now operating partner Eric Horsley had the idea that the love of great pizza with good beer was universal. He shared that concept with then-future Managing Partners Jeff Van Dyke and Barbara BodfordMorgan. Together, the three conceived a restaurant approach that applied fine dining techniques and quality to casual, everyday food. So, their goal was to keep the restaurant simple and fun, but with splashes of unique style and cooking with fire. Thus, Brixx Pizza was born. They also bake focaccia bread each day for their sandwiches. The Brixx crew in Green Hills said they embrace how inventive customers can be with pizza, appealing to a wide range of palates and dietary needs. 18
Green Hills Lifestyle | October 2019
In fact, they offer vegan and vegetarian options, wholewheat crust and gluten-free menu items. By also offering local and national craft beers and microbrews with a great wine selection, Brixx provides a fresh alternative to “pizza and beer.” The first Brixx Wood Fired Pizza opened in 1998, and they’ve been operating as caring community spots since. They give back by sponsoring local and national charities or raise money for schools, churches or clubs through the Brixx Buxx program. Though Brixx offers something for everyone on their menu, Green Hills Lifestyle thought it’d be fun to have a few local secret judges to taste a few house favorites sideby-side for comparison in an attempt to answer the question of which one is a fall favorite. So, Green Hills Lifestyle recently pitted pizza against pizza at Brixx Green Hills, with the hope of choosing one as a winning combination and flavor. Among the contenders were:

Green Hills Lifestyle | October 2019
Paducah, Kentucky IS RICH WITH AGRICULTURAL HISTORY, MAKING IT A GREAT PLACE TO GO FOR DEPENDABLY TASTY FOOD OPTIONS.
Once such Paducah-based eatery, the freight house, is led by chef/proprietor Sara Bradley, who was runner-up on season 16 of Bravo’s competitive cooking television show Top Chef. She opened the doors to freight house in 2015 under the ethos “Food is more than just eating.” She and her team put forth food that has a story—many stories, in fact. Sara was born and raised in western Kentucky, so it’s no wonder she remains loyal to local farmers and producers and why she believes foods are meant to be in enjoyed in-season. Her rotating menu is crafted from highly seasonal, local ingredients, all sourced within a day’s drive of the restaurant. A trip to the freight house makes a nice, pleasant two-hour jaunt, making it a gorgeous getaway. FreightHouseFood.com Paducah also is gaining acclaim as a destination for those who crave rich, authentic cultural experiences. It’s home to a National Quilt Museum with various exhibitions and innovative events. Art lovers can enjoy the Yeiser Art Center, Maiden Alley Cinema and Gallery, Market House Theatre, Clemens Fine Art Center and the Carson Center. History enthusiasts like the fact that Paducah’s significant American heritage can be traced to the city’s strategic location at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee rivers and that the city was founded in 1827 by William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. There’s also ample shopping. The captivating natural landscape of the Four Rivers Region makes Paducah a prime setting for a variety of active pursuits. Nearby, Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and Land Between the Lakes offer more than 3,000 miles of shoreline, birding, hiking, wildlife viewing and outdoor adventures.

COLE'S
NEW RESTAURANT SERVES CARRYOUT, CASSEROLES AND COMFORT ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY DANA TROGLEN

Green Hills Lifestyle | October 2019
EXPERIENCED RESTAURATEUR AND NASHVILLE NATIVE CURT COLE IS KNOWN FOR CREATING SOME OF THE FRIENDLIEST, FUNKIEST LITTLE NEIGHBORHOOD JOINTS FOR FIRST-RATE FOODS. And he's at it again. Reopening in September as the new Cole's restaurant in the former Firefly Grille location at 2201 Bandywood Drive gives Curt joy he wishes to share. Straightforward Southern cooking with a twist is Curt's new mantra and everyday meal promise. He's used to catering to locals, which is still his goal. Packed with a lighter fare that easily fits into a casual ambiance, Cole's serves lunch and dinner six days a week. They're closed on Sundays for regrouping. "We're keeping it clean and simple, but we brought back some of the former favorites, such as our cheddar mac and cheese and our array of desserts," says the restaurateur, whose former food ventures included Midtown Café and Music City Roadhouse in Georgetown, D.C. Curt says he's proud of the new refrigerated section of the restaurant, which allows diners to grab and go with their food choices whenever they'd like. He adds that he offers a core menu, plus lunch and dinner specials. Casseroles—plenty of comforting casseroles—are definitely a new emphasis for Curt. He says they also will focus on seafood, chicken and dumplings or chicken pot pie, and rotisserie-prepared duck, chicken, pork and lamb. Regarding Curt's favorite, he confirms he embraces and enjoys the whole menu. "If I wasn't excited about eating something, I wouldn't have the dish on the menu," he says. "We'll have solid options for pescatarians, vegans and carnivores alike." The new decor of the restaurant, both exterior and interior, also is simple and straightforward, with a clean, crisp and newly streamlined dining area. Many of the new decorations are black and white, with a less adorned look than Curt's regulars for Firefly Grille were accustomed to previously after it opened in the spring of 2001. He says more space was devoted to the new bar. "It's all about comfort, simplicity and authentic enjoyment of food, the best beverages and great company," Curt says.
