Restoring Health With a Passion REACHING FREDERICK ONE SPINE AT A TIME ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA MITCHELL
PEOPLE CAN’T HELP BUT LOVE DR. ADAM SMITH AND HIS WIFE, BROOKA. Upon meeting them, you feel the joy they exude for people and the passion they have for wellness. Their journey to Frederick began at Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore. A Young Life training brought them together during the first couple of weeks of Freshman year; they have been inseparable since. It was a whirlwind for the young couple after graduation. Dr. Adam and Brooka found themselves returning from the honeymoon, packing and heading straight to Florida, where Dr. Adam began attending Palmer Chiropractic School, which requires an intensive, three and half years in a year-round program. “We do as much in-classroom training as medical doctors,” Dr. Adam says. While there, Brooka started her dream career as a kindergarten teacher in a low-income high poverty school. One year into teaching, Brooka’s plan for her teaching career was rocked when she and Dr. Adam attended a seminar about launching an independent chiropractic business. “Married couples were speaking about doing a business ministry and, sitting in that room at that moment, I understood it. When Adam said that’s what he wanted, I said, I know, and I want to do it with you! We were all in!” Brooka remembers. Dr. Adam says, “I was influenced by my dad’s experience in the care of a chiropractor. As I looked further into chiropractic and how it approached the function of the body by the nervous system. I realized that the body doesn’t need medicine to heal, it just doesn’t need interference.” He goes on to explain, “Misalignments in the spine cause nerve interference, but when you correct the cause of that, the body heals naturally. I believe God Dr. Adam and Brooka Smith at their office off of West Patrick Street.

created the body with perfect intent, and I was all about that, and, in short, off to chiropractic school, I went!”
“THERE ARE NO SILVER BULLETS TO WELLNESS. THE KEY TO HEALTHY LIVING IS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. THAT INCLUDES MAKING SURE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING WELL. THAT INCLUDES EATING WELL AND MOVING YOUR BODY. MOVING IS MEDICINE. ALL THESE THINGS ARE COMPLEMENTARY TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.” –DR. ADAM
Dr. Adam attended the well-known Palmer College of Chiropractic and is quick to add, “…because I wanted my name to be associated with that college.” He says, “Our practice uses the Torque Release Technique, and I believe in the philosophy behind it. It’s not really moving bones but adding input to the nervous system enabling the nervous system to facilitate the healing. That’s what I am doing. Just facilitating the process. I really love the very gentle and precise approach to it. It’s not the traditional method of chiropractic that people may know with popping and cracking of bones. I have found great results with this, and so I wanted to bring this to the community,” says Dr. Adam. CONTINUED >

HANGING OUT WITH PATRICK AVON, ALSO KNOWN AS SARGE, IS AN EXERCISE IN ITSELF. His enthusiasm and connection to the kids are visible from afar, which is how you will see him unless you can keep up with his high energy! Sarge is hands-on with the kids, encouraging faster and harder, and receiving high-fives and smiles from them as we try to capture a bit of his attention. It was easy to see why he and his program are so successful when we learned a little from the heart of Sarge. WERE YOU ALWAYS PASSIONATE ABOUT GOOD HEALTH? As a kid, I ate healthily. I just naturally enjoyed healthier foods like yogurt and fruit. I was really hyperactive and was crazy about being outside. Often, I was simply dressed in shorts without a shirt and earned the nickname,” Nature Boy.” I was continually running, climbing up trees, and jumping out of the tree into a lake or pond. It was the 70’s, and I think the best time to grow up. We had freedom, and our parents allowed us to hang ourselves, and we never did. It was a wonderful time to be a child. FROM WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS COME? Being active came easy for me and naturally. I was born innately muscular. And as I mentioned, my hyperactivity led me to be very physically active and also competitive. 16

She and her team member, Bernadette, ACSM-certified personal trainer and Doctor of Physical Therapy, work with clients to improve mobility, balance, strength and endurance. They create personalized plans for each client to address individual needs, working with various exercise aids, such as resistance bands, weights and balls.
“If it wasn’t for Katrina, I don’t know where I’d be. I was unable to walk three steps, and now I’ve got my life back!” Whether recovering from a setback or just needing a little help or direction, Katrina and Bernadette bring their warmth and enthusiasm to their clients as they work with them to achieve their goals. ”We have the freedom and ability to treat the whole person with total body wellness exercises.” Bernadette adds. Both Joe and Peter are seeing the benefits of working with the women of Agewell. Joe’s daughter, Sue, has observed the overall health improvement since working with Agewell Senior Fit. “My Dad has really enjoyed the time he spends with Katrina. She doesn’t push but gets my Dad to do the exercises, and I’ve seen a difference in him as well as his physical abilities and balance.” Peter says, “If it wasn’t for Katrina, I don’t know where I’d be. I was unable to walk three steps, and now I’ve got my life back! We even went on a cruise recently, and I have been on several fishing trips.” With personalized exercise training, Peter can now walk reasonable distances and enjoy being out with family and friends. Not only did Peter regain control of his life, but Kay did so as well. IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO WHEN KATHLEEN HOWE
FIRST

MARYLAND FARM. The malnourished horse was suffering from blatant neglect, having been seemingly abandoned by its owner. Not one to stand by and watch a horse suffer, Howe took action to adopt Toby, and she began to rehabilitate the horse in her 10-acre backyard. Thanks to her care, Toby underwent a complete wellness transformation – and word got out about how Howe had saved the horse’s life. Before long, calls began coming in for Howe to take in more and more horses, because, as Howe quickly learned, Toby was not a unique case. Throughout Maryland, hundreds of horses each year are seized by authorities in cases of extreme neglect or abuse – a statistic that has sadly not seen a drastic decrease since the fateful day that Howe met Toby 30 years ago. Since that day, however, things have changed for the better for many of those horses, thanks to the rescue and rehabilitation services provided by the organization that Howe founded, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2019: Days End Farm Horse Rescue. To date, the 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue, based in Woodbine, Maryland, has saved more than 2,300 horses, all brought to the rescue as a result of court cases of abuse or neglect. But improving equine health and wellness in Maryland and beyond is not DEFHR’s only mission. Days End – so named by Howe because the farm was her favorite place to be at each day’s end – is bringing together its neighbors from all walks of life in Carroll, Howard, and Frederick counties for the greater well-being of the area community as a whole, be it human or equine. As Lauren Arianna Raskin, a ninth-grade volunteer at DEFHR wise beyond her years, wrote, “Perhaps the reason DEFHR is such an impressive place is that it unifies people, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, or socioeconomic status.” It’s something that Raskin has seen firsthand as one of the more than 1,100 volunteers who give a total of over 55,000 hours of CONTINUED >
