PRESS COFFEE LAUNCHES NEW ALLOCATION COFFEE Local coffee purveyor Press Coffee strives to be a leader in specialty coffee. It selects the best beans from around the world, roasts them by skilled artisans at the company’s roastery, and educates staff and customers about the characteristics that make specialty coffee unique. Now, Press is rolling out a new Allocation coffee line. Specialty coffee is a term used to refer to coffee that has scored over 80 points on a 100-point scale by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. FOR 82 YEARS, FAMILY-RUN BERRIDGE NURSERIES FLOURISHES BY BRINGING LIFE TO VALLEY HOMES

nursery

stories FOR EIGHT DECADES, BERRIDGE NURSERIES HAS HELPED PHOENICIANS BEAUTIFY THEIR HOMES WITH PREMIUM PLANTS, TREES, AND THE WIDEST SELECTION OF ROSES IN THE VALLEY. But florae weren’t the only forms of life growing up at the Arcadia-area nursery. Sisters Melinda Walton and Christine Fortman now run the nursery started by their grandfather James Berridge Jr. in 1938. They spent much of their childhood in the nursery, having as much fun as kids in a, well, nursery.

“I remember running around and being pushed around on customer carts. I’m sure my mother didn’t approve of it,” Melinda says while laughing. “In high school, we worked the cash register.” Their grandfather launched Berridge when he was 20, at the onset of an emerging horticulture industry and awareness of landscaping’s role in housing values in a

residential segment that was picking up steam. At the time, competition in the landscape space was practically non-existent. “It all kind of went hand-in-hand,” Melinda says. James’ daughter Meredith Walton, Melinda and Christine’s mother, was also young when she started at Berridge, propagating seeds. The passion for plants is strong as a pedigree, propelling this family business into rare air with a third generation at the helm. Meredith continues to serve as the company’s president, and several employees have been there for at least 15 years, with one at 48 years.

“Our grandfather set the tone early on for the family environment. We continue to work to safeguard this business for our community and dedicated employees and their families, and to honor our history and grandfather and mother’s legacy,” Melinda says. Melinda and Christine have seen the business through a recession, competition, and other factors beyond their control. “It’s tremendous to have 82 years of not only good but poor economies, that prepare us for knowing that nothing is ever going to stay the same and to plan accordingly,” Melinda says. Knowing the employees and consistent inventory keeps customers coming back is what distinguishes Berridge from competitors who lack personalized service and in-depth knowledge of what thrives and does not in the desert. Customers also come to Berridge for inspiration. Pottery, statuary, fountains, indoor flowering plants, and a seasonal section filled with décor and gifts helps customers envision what could be. “Often, other nurseries and big box stores look more like growing grounds, with rows and rows of plants. Our environment is really a garden setting. You can come here and become inspired as to what your home could look like,” Melinda says. Customers hail from nearby, and as far as Sun City West and Queen Creek. Some came here as kids with their parents, and return as adults with their children. “It gives you more of a small town feel… plants enhance your life and we feel we help them do that,” Melinda says. “You’re not just a business, you are supporting a community and their needs.” BerridgeNursery.com

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED)

“When I open a hive, if someone is calm, it’s a good indication. If their eyes get really big, it may not be a good thing for you because bees can sense fear,” Arnold says. Dave Owens, also known as The Garden Guy, recently installed two hives in the lush backyard of his Paradise Valley home that sits on 2 acres and backs up to Mummy Mountain. He took a class from Arnold and connected with Perrin in preparation to indulge his interest in backyard beekeeping. “It’s going to be a bit of an adventure,” Owens says with a chuckle. Owens knows the revitalization of bee colonies is crucial to survival, especially since there’s less wind pollination in the desert southwest than in other regions. It’s why he’s decided to join the fight. “It’s our chance to add a little bit back into nature, and that’s our inspiration. It’s our way of giving back,” he says. Since taking up beekeeping, Perrin, an independent marketing consultant in the luxury residential design space, has only become exponentially more passionate about the hobby that has become so much more as she takes active roles in helping to spark that passion in others, often teaming up with Arnold. 22

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2020

How did Perrin get started? Her journey began due to a conversation about Kickstarters with her two sisters, some wine, and a persuasive video. They stumbled onto a video for Kickstarter Flow Hive, a hive and tap system that allows beekeepers to extract honey from a hive without destroying it, or traumatizing or accidentally killing its bees. What caught their attention, however, was the male Australian beekeeper in the video. “We thought it was a neat idea. But we also thought this beekeeper was pretty darn cute,” Perrin says, giggling. “The next thing you know, for my birthday, my husband and sisters bought me a Flow Hive.” Of course, the rest is history. Over the years that followed, Perrin has experienced many more benefits to her hobby-turned-passion. Finding a peaceful Zen while beekeeping and bonding with her bees are among them, and knowing she is doing what she can to stimulate the bee population and assist with the sustainability of a healthy planet brings its own special joy. “If we can get more people involved with this, it’s good for gardens, good for the environment, and good for education,” she says. Thinking about entering the world of backyard beekeeping? Arnold and Perrin have suggestions to keep in mind:

+ Each city has its own ordinance regulating beekeeping. Research what’s legal in yours before starting.

+ Consider your physical capabilities. A full hive that needs to be moved for inspection when full of honey can weigh 90 pounds. If that’s too much, get more manageable equipment.

+ A five-frame nuc gives you the best shot at first-time success. It costs about $200 and comes with everything needed, from food sources and ample growth space to a queen, eggs, pupa and larvae. Get insulation to protect it against extreme cold and heat.

+ Obtain a non-Africanized queen. Arnold’s queens are from Hawaii, where there are none, so her colonies won’t be Africanized.

+ Take at least one hands-on introductory class before starting. + Find a mentor who can help you navigate the new territory. For the first year, Perrin spent about $1,000 for the nuc, queen, bees, and two beekeeping suits—one made of canvas and another of light mesh for the summer. She also joined a beekeeping class. When inspecting your hive, do it at a time when your neighbors are less likely to be out in their backyard. If beekeeping is for you, Arnold advises, “You’ve become a steward of a hive. If you give them a good home, they’ll return the favor.” April 2020 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

KRISTIN CHENOWETH ON PERFORMING, HER FAVORITE ROLE, GIVING BACK, AND ATTENDING CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT

WHEN KRISTIN CHENOWETH WAS JUST 8 YEARS OLD, SHE KNEW SHE WANTED TO BE A PERFORMER. “I was in the Tulsa Ballet Theater’s production of The Nutcracker,” she says. “I auditioned to play one of the many mice. I didn’t get that part because I was too little, so they let me create the role of the rabbit. There I was, in The Nutcracker, by myself as the rabbit. I hopped, ate, and danced… just like a rabbit. It was then that I learned how important ‘character’ was. Every song, every role, every genre, everything I do, I look at the character.” It was a lesson that has served her well. Chenoweth, who counts both a Tony Award and Primetime Emmy Award amongst her accolades, is multitalented. As an actress, her roles have spanned Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Glinda in Wicked on Broadway; Annabeth Schott in The West Wing and Olive Snook in Pushing Daisies on television; roles in Bewitched, The Pink Panther and The Boy Next Door in movies; and so much more. She’s also released studio albums and singles, as well as written a book. As for her favorite role? “Lily Garland. It was originally created for Madeline Kahn,” she says. “It’s the most demanding female lead in a Broadway musical in my opinion thus far. It was the first revival. Twenty years ago Comden and Green (composer lyricist team) told me I had to play it one day. I’m so glad I was able to use almost all of my skill set. It requires operetta, major dancing, highbrow comedy, lots of physicality. Let’s just say, I did nothing else while doing the show. “I do love being on stage and the actual performance,” she continues. “But what really makes me inspired is the process of getting to the stage. The second I get a piece of music, it starts for me. The deconstruction of a song jazzes me. Working on musicality and making it original is why I keep at it.” Chenoweth grew up in Broken Arrow, a small town in Oklahoma, where “there was a real sense of community.

SETTING THE STAGE (CONTINUED)

“I grew up in a great church and in a school system that put as much emphasis on the arts as they did football. We had a great community theater and everybody knew everybody else’s business. It was a great place to grow up.” Today, she not only juggles her career, but philanthropic efforts, as well. She launched the Kristin Chenoweth Arts and Education Fund (OfficialKristinChenoweth.com/4good),

which

accepts donations; formed a charity partnership with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center (BAPAC) Foundation in Oklahoma; and launched an annual Broadway Bootcamp, providing young Broadway hopefuls with the opportunity to take classes, hold performances and learn from top mentors in the entertainment industry. And this October, she will once again be in the Valley for a good cause—to attend Celebrity Fight Night, known as one of the nation’s elite charity events. “It’s pretty cool to be standing in a room where at any given moment, Reba [McEntire] is going to get up and sing, or Melissa Peterman will pick you up and throw you over her shoulder,” she says. 28

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2020

Celebrity Fight Night is the star-studded event that is back in the Valley for its 26th year, held on Oct. 3 at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. This will be Chenoweth’s fourth year attending. “I love what they stand for,” she explains. “It’s a true honor to work with Celebrity Fight Night. I’m very grateful. I’m so proud of the work they do,” she says, noting that she continues to be involved “because I see good people doing good things.” This year’s event features Reba McEntire back for her 16th year as the emcee, and Flo Rida as the featured entertainer. Other celebrities performing or attending include Jimmy Kimmel, David Foster, The Tenors, and Reggie Jackson (tickets are available at CelebrityFightNight.org). Started in 1994 by Jimmy Walker, the Celebrity Fight Night Foundation has gifted more than $90 million over the past 25 years benefitting the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, as well as other charities. Chenoweth always enjoys visiting the Valley, and is glad to be back. “I’m a big Arizona Cardinals fan,” she says. “I’m also a really big fan of the weather, no matter how hot it gets, I love it.”

“IT’S A TRUE HONOR TO WORK WITH CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT. I’M VERY GRATEFUL. I’M SO PROUD OF THE WORK THEY DO.” April 2020 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

Cupid Has Heart By Kristine M. Burnett

GATEWAY FOR CANCER RESEARCH/ PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL $1.5M GRANT BRINGS ‘CUPID’ PEDIATRIC BRAIN CANCER TRIAL TO LIFE. The only thing constant is change. Unless, however, you’re talking about treatments for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare and fatal brain cancer that develops in the brainstem of children ages 3 - 13. With funding from Gateway for Cancer Research to launch an innovative clinical trial at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, that’s about to change. For nearly three decades, Gateway for Cancer Research has been funding promising, early phase clinical cancer trials at some of the world’s most renowned institutions. Coincidentally, it’s been more than three decades since any new treatments have been introduced for DIPG, which was recently renamed diffuse midline glioma. This incurable and devastating condition accounts for 75% of all pediatric brainstem tumors, and it claims the lives of most victims within just 12 months of diagnosis. If there has ever been a time for change, it’s now!

Following last year’s Vino con Stelle gala, Gateway’s signature fundraising affair in Arizona, the organization awarded a $1.5 million grant to study a new immunotherapy approach for the treatment of DIPG. Nicknamed the CUPID study, the Phase I trial is investigating efficacy of a customized peptide vaccine combined with a checkpoint inhibitor for newly diagnosed and recurrent Diffuse midline glioma. The trial is being led by Cynthia J. Wetmore, MD, PhD. A renowned physician-scientist and neuro-oncologist, Dr. Wetmore serves as division chief of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Having dedicated her more than 20-year career to treating DIPG and caring for children battling brain tumors, she is giving new hope to families of children like 9-year-old Luke Carusillo. While Luke isn’t battling DIPG specifically, he has been living with an inoperable brain tumor since he was diagnosed in March 2015 at age 4. Doctors attribute his health and success to medication being administered as part of another Gateway-funded early phase clinical

cancer trial based at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Wetmore, her colleagues at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and experts at Gateway are hopeful that the CUPID study will be the breakthrough that gives children diagnosed with DIPG similar success. Of course, none of this would be possible without support from a global philanthropic community that recognizes the value of investing in clinical cancer research. Help Gateway for Cancer Research bring to fruition clinical trials that have the potential to shape the future of cancer care and end cancer as we know it. Join like-minded philanthropists, physicians and grateful patients at the 4th Annual Vino con Stelle in Fall 2020. You can give hope to those facing cancer. TREND SETTER

a global powerhouse CHRISSY SAYARE HELPS CHANGE AN INDUSTRY

DUBAI. Paris. Athens. New York. London. Oklahoma. Singapore. Hong Kong. Phoenix. Chrissy Sayare has been all over the world to pick up unique high-end fashions from her clients, which she then offers for sale in the luxury resale store, To Be Continued (TBC), which she co-owns with her husband, Mitch. “We focus on providing our clients with a luxury experience from the moment they contact us and throughout the entire process,” she explains. “We started this business believing in resale and believing that beautiful things have a lot of life in them. We wanted to become the reseller who the discerning consumer trusts and knows they can turn to, to both buy and sell.” In fact, walking into TBC, which has four locations—two in Scottsdale, one in Dallas, and one in Los Angeles—is a luxury experience. “We created a very lavish environment, so you’re a little bit confused that you’re in a resale shop,” Sayare says. The store features items from designers such as Burberry, Chanel, Nanette Lepore, Hermès, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Zang Toi, and hundreds of others.

“I am surrounded by beautiful fashion every single day and I still get excited when product comes in the door,” she says. “And, I still get excited when something beautiful finds a new home with someone who loves it.” Sayare’s journey with fashion began at a young age. She loved top brands and high fashion, but was on a very limited budget when growing up. This led to her becoming a “very smart shopper and a good bargain hunter.” When she and Mitch moved to Paradise Valley six years Photo by Carl Schultz

ago, opening TBC was a way for her to combine her business background, entrepreneurial spirit, and love of fashion—and to meet her goal of making high fashion accessible to more fashion lovers. “My belief is that luxury fashion should be accessible to more people than it has been in the past,” she explains. The items she takes on consignment are highly edited, creating an inventory of merchandise that shoppers can count on. Giving fashion a second life also has another purpose Sayare is proud of—it’s eco-friendly. “TBC operates on a model that promotes this message to fashion lovers everywhere: Go ahead and buy what’s in season but be sure to bring it to us so we can resell it, sometimes over and over again, to other fashion lovers,”

she explains. “We never discourage people from buying current collections, and there’s real virtue in that—it’s what makes the fashion economy go. Then when the first owner is done with that merchandise, they’re part of the circular economy of fashion because they’re putting what they’re no longer using back into the marketplace. Then, the people who buy from us are participating in sustainability because what they’re buying was already made. We’re recycling in a glamorous way.” A big part of the TBC concept is also mixing emerging designers with these classics from the past, so TBC holds trunk shows throughout the year. When

(TBCConsignment.com), Sayare spends her time making an impact in other ways. Locally, she and TBC annually sponsor the Arizona Costume Institute lunch, and she’s also involved with Phoenix Heart Ball, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and more. Globally, she’s involved with the French Heritage Society; on the global advisory board of her alma mater, Babson College; and was recently named to Vogue100, a highly coveted international group of people identified by Vogue magazine as having strong voices in the world of fashion and entertainment. She’s truly a global powerhouse. Photo by Carl Schultz April 2020 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

AQUAMAN POOLS’ UNIQUE SYSTEM HELPS SAVE WATER ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Chad Nikkel. Photo by David Blakeman

SINCE 2009, CHAD NIKKEL HAS BEEN HELPING HOMEOWNERS KEEP THEIR POOLS SPARKING CLEAN AND DIVE-IN READY. “I love the fact that we are selling fun,” says the owner of Aquaman Pools, LLC and Aqua Touch Pool Purification. “What we do is provide enjoyment for families and memories in their backyard by taking out the drudgery of the maintenance.” Aquaman Pools offers multiple services—from weekly pool maintenance for residential and commercial properties, to pool repair and remodeling. But then, seeing people needing to drain their pools every two years or so and the amount of water that was wasted—as well as the fact that Arizona is running out of water—compelled Nikkel to begin researching eco-friendly ways to preserve water. That’s when he came across reverse osmosis pool purification. “This is an option to make a significant impact with an amazing technology, and save water at a large rate,” Nikkel explains. “Every time you drain your pool, that wastes approximately 15,000-plus gallons down the drain of a precious resource in our desert. Additionally, the water that comes out of the tap in the Valley is very hard and has a lot of minerals already in it. Our mobile reverse osmosis process turns the water in your pool to bottled water quality. Your pool will run better and require less chemicals afterwards. It will also be better for your skin, hair and nails, and for your pets if they swim or drink out of your pool.” Nikkel worked with a company in Lake Havasu that specializes in water conservation techniques to build a custom mobile trailer that is adapted with the reverse osmosis technology. He then launched the Aqua Touch Pool Purification side of the company, where the trailer is brought to homes. The entire purification process wastes barely 5%-10% of water. At the end of the day, water is saved, and homeowners are left with clean, clear pool water that’s ready for fun. SuperCleanPools.com 50
