Hallsley Birthday Brigade When Louie Correa returned in February from a trip to Disney celebrating his daughter’s birthday, he realized many children wouldn’t have celebrations because of COVID-19. So he and his wife, along with Caitlyn Doan, started Birthday Brigade parades. “People are so creative, wearing costumes and making noise with cowbells, sirens and megaphones. SPECIALLY TRAINED HORSES (AND DOGS) OFFER COMFORT AND CARE IN PHYSICAL THERAPIST’S PRACTICE

DR. ROBIN LANGERHANS OWNS SIX HORSES AND THREE DOGS. While she loves them dearly, they’re much more than pets - they’re therapy animals. Langerhans, a doctor of physical therapy, offers programs that provide adaptive riding as a recreational activity and also offers services for physical, occupational and speech therapy using equine movement. Langerhans started Making Strides of Virginia in 2017 after moving from Pennsylvania to the Richmond area. This 501(c)(3) organization offers adaptive riding and horseback riding lessons to people of all ages for recreation. At the same time, she began offering hippotherapy, or therapy involving equine movement, through Making Strides, a for-profit company she had operated for nearly 20 years in the Philadelphia area. The for-profit entity is for clients for whom hippotherapy is prescribed or recommended as part of a physical, occupational or speech therapy regimen. Hippotherapy is covered by some medical insurances. All Making Strides programs help clients and participants improve balance, increase muscle

8-week sessions. Physical distancing requirements put the hippotherapy on hold. “We have to be in close proximity – we can’t be six feet apart,” she explained. Lara Budraski praised Making Strides for its focus on safety. “All of the volunteers are great with ensuring George is safe, but also pushing him to challenge himself and making it fun.” In addition to her therapy clients, which include children with special needs and injured military personnel and veterans, Langerhans gives riding lessons to those without disabilities. Many of these are siblings of her young therapy clients; Langerhans explained that siblings sometimes feel slighted by attention devoted to a disabled brother or sister. “This gets the siblings involved,” Langerhans said. Langerhans uses her therapy dogs – Shiloh Shepherd Odin and miniature Schnauzers Remington and Jackson – in her work with senior adults in care facilities, and to offer comfort and encourage interaction through physical contact with other clients in a treatment known as Animal Assisted Therapy. She hopes to train more therapy dogs in partnership with the farm family who cares for her horses. She said good therapy animal has a gentle nature and remains calm around children. “You just know if a dog can be a therapy dog. You know that with horses, too. They’re tolerant. They really relate to kids. Horses are so in tune with our body language.” To learn more: www.MakingStridesofVirginia.org info@MakingStridesofVirginia.org 14

The staff has been known to sing songs, play "tooth music," and act silly in order to create a fun environment. With a television in each treatment room, kids can be distracted by a favorite show and cuddled in a warm blanket with their favorite stuffed animal. Staff routinely gets down to a child’s level to interact and explain procedures, and Dr. Lynn wears a black lab coat, having found that for some patients across the age spectrum, a white coat can provoke anxiety. “We help our patients understand that our goal is that they are always comfortable,” Dr. Lynn said. “We make sure they know they can talk to us at any time and we will be patient in answering any questions they might have. It is important that they know that they can trust us." Samm Jocelyn has been coming to Penterson & Booth for 14 years – 11 as a patient and three as a hygienist. “We just fell in love with this office,” said Jocelyn, who began with the practice when her family moved from Northern Virginia. “Everyone really knew who you were. It got me interested in the dental field.” Jocelyn spent a summer shadowing staff, then went to school to study hygiene. She interviewed for a hygiene position while still in school. “They held a spot for me, and I went right to work when I got my license,” Jocelyn said. “Now I’m part of the family and I help the patients feel that way too.” At Penterson & Booth, the patient’s needs always come first. “Be one who nurtures and builds,” says the quote on the office wall. “Be one who has an understanding and forgiving heart, who looks for the best. Leave people better than you found them." That, they do. To learn more: https://www.pbddssmiles.com/

M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

PIÑLLAMA

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
