Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and children are playing outside as the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer. This month at Patchogue Lifestyle, we bring you our Eco issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Inspired by the infinite beauty of the earth—and our desire to preserve and protect it—we compiled an array of eco-conscious and eco-friendly people and places making a difference right here in Patchogue and the surrounding South Shore area.

SCCVFW TESTIMONIAL DINNER Suffolk County Council Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (SCCVFW), will hold its 2020 Testimonial Dinner on April 5th 2020. At Sunset Harbor, in Patchogue. The dinner is a chance to honor the 20192020 Commander Dave Rogers (local veteran and Commander of VFW Post 2913 in Patchogue), who works hard to ensure that the Veterans and their family members in the County are taking care of. This year in keeping with his saying “DEEDS NOT WORDS” Commander Rogers will also be honoring those veterans and members of the community that uphold the VFW Motto “NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS.” Your sponsorship will go towards recognition of those that continue to serve the veterans of Suffolk County and help to continue supporting the SCCVFW programs that provide support and assistance to the over 50,000 veterans in the community. SUMMER GARDEN TIPS
SPRING PREPARATION YIELDS A TASTY SUMMER GARDEN
ARTICLE GENEVIEVE GARRUPPO
AS SPRING APPROACHES, WE ALL HAVE OUR EYES ON THE PLOTS OF LAND IN OUR BACKYARDS WHERE OUR GARDENS WILL SOON GROW. But before the last frost, there are a few things we should bear in mind before sowing our seeds. Karl Auwaerter, the owner of the Bayport Flower Houses, has given some tips to prepare our gardens for the spring. His biggest seed of advice? Wait! Lots of gardeners come in, eager to plant around Mother’s Day, but the best time for most of the fruits and vegetables we enjoy all summer long are best planted closer to Memorial Day. And he highly recommends getting your soil tested with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. They have a horticultural lab in Riverhead which accepts samples year-round.
18
Patchogue Lifestyle | April 2020
1. 2. 3.
Get your soil’s pH tested. Send a sample; for more information on nearly all of your gardening questions, check out ccesuffolk.org Don’t rototill! Beneath the 4 to 5 inches of soil that has been tilled over the years lies a hard pan. Water can’t drain and roots cannot puncture the hard soil, which will ruin your crops. Instead, just mow the garden down, mulch, and then move on to step 3. Add limestone and fertilizer. Balancing your soil can help the nutrients be absorbed by the crops. Once you receive the results of your soil’s pH, you will get a recommendation to add limestone. Additionally, adding a natural fertilizer to the soil will make for happy plants!
4.
Plant in Phases. Peas, spinach, and radishes can go early. Most crops that grow in the ground can be planted after the frost (late April), then two weeks later do another seeding. A few weeks after that comes the peas, herbs, beans, and cucumbers. Lastlythe nightshade family (eggplants, tomatoes, peppers)- don’t like soil too cold or wet. You’ll be safe after Memorial Day.
LAWN TIP: Clover is a legume, which is a nitrogen fixing plant. It takes the nitrogen out of the atmosphere and creates little nodules on its roots and when it dies, it fertilizes the soil naturally. Farmers will actually put a cover crop of alfalfa sprouts in between crops because it’s a green manure. In your lawn you really want the clover. It’s the first up in the springtime and when it blooms, the bees can harvest the pollen which they need as well. bayportflower.com 631.472.0014 April 2020 | Patchogue Lifestyle

sustainabilitybuzz term or the new normal? SUSTAINABILITY. At the very core it means to be able to exist constantly. The scary reality is that there needs to be a shift in our mindsets and behavior for our environment to be sustainable. The PEP Committee is here to help Patchogue continue to be the model for progressive action and forward thinking. They work on projects to improve the environment in

tainable natural environment for the Village of Patchogue.” Patchogue has long been a leader in the Long Island environmental arena. The environmental enthusiasm in Patchogue can be drawn back to the revitalization of the downtown that began about a decade ago. The influx of popular restaurants and nightlife have turned the village into a hotspot attracting new residents and visitors from all over the island. Since they were formed the PEP committee has helped to ban single use plastic bags and all styrofoam containers in Patchogue Village. In partnership with Fire Island National Seashore they have organized the

Patchogue River cleanup from 2015-present. This happens every September in conjunction with “National Public Lands Day.” Through a cooperative effort with St. Joseph’s college, PEP has been working with Brookhaven Town on purchasing aerators to help oxygenate the Patchogue Lake, which has deteriorated with algae over the years. They have received a grant for an electric car charger to be installed at village hall as well as a grant to place blue recycling barrels in our parks. In addition, they are involved with environmental research; currently undergoing a microplastic study funded by an EPA grant. Plastic is everywhere; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains, a lot of it ends up in the ocean. Most plastics in the ocean break up into very small particles. These small plastic bits are called “microplastics.” Other plastics are intentionally designed to be small. They’re called microbeads and are used in many health and beauty products and even toothpaste. These tiny particles easily pass through water filtration systems and end up in the ocean and Great Lakes, posing a potential threat to aquatic life. One of their biggest initiatives is the Village of Patchogue Green Business program. It is a voluntary program for all businesses within the village. The program is designed to showcase our environmentally friendly businesses for becoming sustainable leaders. Applications can easily be found at patchoguevillage.org/ patchogue-green-business-program and the committee is happy to help answer and questions and facilitate the process for any businesses looking to take on this action.

Lighting design can greatly improve the aesthetic appeal of your home, and upgrading it will save electricity and help lower your energy costs. nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.
PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.
C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.
F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. CONTINUED >

HE ALTH Y LIFEST Y LE (CONTINUED) While nutritionists can recommend average nutrient intake percentages for a population, those might not be entirely accurate for your body and what you need. If you don’t enjoy calculating and counting

every single gram you eat, you can just start with the recommended guidelines and make adjustments based on how you feel each day. If you are groggy and sluggish mid-day, look at how many carbohydrates you had in your lunch and see if you want to change anything about your lunch tomorrow. Here’s how to read nutrition labels so you can better keep track and know what you are eating.
Serving sizes can be confusing if you don’t know what an ounce of that food looks like. Look at “Servings Per

food. If you are eating a package of nuts as a snack, and you are not eating anything else with it, you may need a couple of packages to eat as many calories as you want for that snack. It’s not wrong to eat multiple servings! Focus on what your body needs.
You need a variety of vitamins in your day, so check the percentages and make sure you are getting lots of different nutrients. Vitamin C is great, but it is possible to have too much Vitamin C and neglect Vitamin A. Calcium and iron are important for strength and to avoid injuries, so make sure you get enough of those each day as well. An easy trick is to try eating a vegetable of every color each day.

Carbohydrates are broken down by dietary fiber and sugar. To feel fuller longer and to have a clear mind and avoid getting foggy, choose carbohydrates, such as wild rice, that have more dietary fiber and less sugar.
YOU CAN SEARCH FOR A NUTRIE N T C A L C U L AT O R O N L I N E T O FIND OUT HOW MUCH PROTEIN, C A R B O H Y D R AT E S A N D F AT S Y O U S H O U L D B E E AT I N G I N A D AY FOR YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS.
You are the best expert of you, and you get to make all of the final decisions for your body. Do your research, get all of the info that you can and then decide how you want to divide up your nutrition each day. One of the most effective things you can do is keep a log of your moods, how your skin looks, how your hair feels, your water intake and your energy levels. While your fitness goals are important, how you feel each day is so much more important. It’s easy to lose weight by dramatically cutting calories, but that can leave you feeling irritable with low energy, and it’s ultimately not worth it. Take care of yourself and think about how the choices you make will affect your health in the long run. And never forget that you are enough, just the way you are.
