riding on our garden this year! Our April issue is always fun as we explore the beautiful things that our community is doing to support our earth. This year we have a community garden, a service that will garden for you, and Abbey-Jo Eans' delicious kale caesar salad recipe to inspire you. If that's not enough to get you outside, nothing is! I know that there is a lot of anxiety about COVID-19 right now and rightfully so. But as a magazine that centers around the community, I will focus on the ways that we can come together even when circumstances seem scary. So dig in the dirt and create something new. PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A Year of Growth DEAR FRIENDS, It's April--one year since I left corporate America and stepped into a completely new role for me, that of the publisher of Northland Lifestyle. When I took this job on, I hoped to find a community of inspiring, innovative people making their home the best that it can be. I have found just that and I haven't looked back since! When reflecting on the past year, several great moments come to mind. I loved being a part of the May Women's issue and showing women that empower women. Our August kid's issue hit close to home, literally, as we did several fun activities in my backyard for the photoshoot! And then there was one of my favorite topics, our Food issue, which was filled with several mouth-watering dishes! I really can't pick a favorite. Every story that appears in Northland Lifestyle is special. This goes for both the editorial and our advertising partners. We truly care about making Northland Lifestyle inspiring and hyper-local content that you're proud to place on your coffee table. Our issues seem to always come together perfectly--many thanks to our amazing editor, Rachel. I'd like to thank our partners, both the ones that have been a part of the Northland Lifestyle family for years or that have just joined us in 2019. We truly have a partnership and I care about each one of their successes. I've created several great relationships that I consider more friendships now. It warms my heart when I receive emails from local businesses that are thriving because of the connection to the community that we are able to provide. The Northland is a hidden gem and I am so thankful to have a platform that can showcase its growth, charm, and potential. After all, we are just getting started! As a mom and a business owner, I'm proud to nurture the area where I want to raise my kids. Thank you for allowing our magazine to be the voice of our neighborhoods. I'm so proud to say I live in the Northland - we are thriving! Best,

Jeron Traphagan, Publisher

Community Garden WHEN AJA HARTMAN MOVED TO THE MEADOWBROOK NORTH NEIGHBORHOOD ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO, SHE WAS EXCITED. There was a rumor about a pool in the neighborhood, a welcome perk in Gladstone. But as time passed, the pool never opened. Little did Hartman know, the pool that

After some time, the city of Gladstone erected a fence around the Meadowbrook Swimming Club, a defunct private

long dead and the city unwilling to develop the land. In 2015, Hartman started hatching an idea. “I thought it would be great to put in a garden. I started

asking around, and they informed me that there was a neighborhood board that I needed to talk to about it. I didn’t even know that there was a board,” says Hartman. Undeterred, she continued digging, figuratively. After going to the neighborhood meetings, she found the support of her neighbors, as long as she was willing to lead the efforts. With pluck and determination, she took on the task of fundraising and directing the efforts to turn an empty lot into a growing community gathering place.

Fundraising was the first hurdle. After starting a GoFundMe page, Hartman raised around $1500 to buy supplies to build the raised garden beds, of which there are eight. There are also trellises intended for training up climbing bushes such as raspberries and blackberries. Once she had funding, Hartman tapped into the human resources that she found amongst the neighborhood, capitalizing on her friends and neighbors’ strengths. “Some of the older men in the neighborhood really like to build so they designed and built the beds. They got really excited to do it,” says Hartman. The garden opened in May of 2016 with eight garden boxes, all occupied with gardeners. A few years later, after a fundraiser at The Hide Out Bar, they put in several fruit trees in conjunction with The Giving Grove. They also applied for and received their 501(c)3. What was an inkling has turned into reality. Hartman says that she reserves the highest boxes for older gardeners so that they don’t have to bend down as far. As the years have passed, some beds have opened up as people have moved away so now Hartman is looking for new blood to come and tend the garden. Two ladies are doing their part to keep the garden growing. Debbie Reynolds and Karlyn Miller have been gardening in their backyards for several years but this will be their first year tending a garden box. Both ladies focus on creating gardens that nurture pollinators, specifically monarch butterflies. Their boxes will be full of flowers and milkweed, which is the sole food source for monarch butterflies.

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, TRAVELING MEANS A PRETTY DRASTIC CHANGE IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY ROUTINE. It affects everything from your diet and exercise regiment to what time you go to bed and wake up. Although the trade off of traveling to a new and exciting city or your favorite beach destination is typically worth the change in routine, traveling doesn’t mean all of your healthy daily habits must be abandoned. I get it – vacation for most of us is all about relaxation. Relaxing on the beaches of Hawaii with an ice cold piña colada in my hand is much more enticing than hitting the gym for a workout. And let’s face it – healthy options like gym accessibility and nutrient-rich menu items aren’t always available. But traveling doesn’t necessarily have to be unhealthy. It also doesn’t have to be as intense as making a commitment to hitting the gym for three hours everyday and eating steamed broccoli for dinner each night. If you make a conscious effort, you can always find ways to stay active and eat nutritiously on vacation. However, it certainly helps to stay somewhere that promotes your wellbeing by offering active programs, CONTINUED >

Another option is to have the hotel’s front desk staff call you a local taxi, which will cost you a bit more. Renting a car in Madeira is also an option, but the roads are extremely steep and windy, making driving quite a challenge if you’re not a local. Funchal is a cosmopolitan city well known for its natural beauty, cable cars and upscale restaurants. The city overlooks the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is backdropped by the island’s luscious green mountains. The best views of the city can be experienced from the Madeira Cable Car, also known as the Teleférico do Funchal. It starts in Funchal’s Old Town and travels over 10,000 feet to Monte, one of the most historical areas of Funchal. Funchal is also home to the Funchal Ecological Park. The park offers multiple hiking trails, trails for mountain biking and all-terrain biking, bird watching experiences, canyoning and more. UNDERSTAND WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD FOR MINDFUL EATING

nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil.

FOOD & WINE (CONTINUED) While nutritionists can recommend average nutrient intake percentages for a population, those might not be entirely accurate for your body and what you need. If you don’t enjoy calculating and counting

every single gram you eat, you can just start with the recommended guidelines and make adjustments based on how you feel each day. If you are groggy and sluggish mid-day, look at how many carbohydrates you had in your lunch and see if you want to change anything about your lunch tomorrow. Here’s how to read nutrition labels so you can better keep track and know what you are eating.

Serving sizes can be confusing if you don’t know what an ounce of that food looks like. Look at “Servings Per

food. If you are eating a package of nuts as a snack, and you are not eating anything else with it, you may need a couple of packages to eat as many calories as you want for that snack. It’s not wrong to eat multiple servings! Focus on what your body needs.

You need a variety of vitamins in your day, so check the percentages and make sure you are getting lots of different nutrients. Vitamin C is great, but it is possible to have too much Vitamin C and neglect Vitamin A. Calcium and iron are important for strength and to avoid injuries, so make sure you get enough of those each day as well. An easy trick is to try eating a vegetable of every color each day.

Carbohydrates are broken down by dietary fiber and sugar. To feel fuller longer and to have a clear mind and avoid getting foggy, choose carbohydrates, such as wild rice, that have more dietary fiber and less sugar.
