GET TO KNOW YOUR l ocal ADVISORS RYAN BARBER
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? CLASSIC, CHIC, CASUAL, BUSINESS, ARTSY, SPORTY, ETC.? I feel like others might define my style better than I can. That said, I’m a cornucopia of styles. It depends on the day, the country and the weather. Whatever environment I’m in, I like to adapt.
SANDY BEACHES, HIGH RISES, LAKES OR MOUNTAIN AIR- WHERE’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GET AWAY? Hands down, the MOUNTAINS. There’s something that’s overwhelmingly indescribable when you’re standing on top of a mountain in wonder; how they were created combined with the scenic depth. The fresh, clean air and stillness are unmatchable.
IF YOU WERE DESIGNING A NEW HOME FOR YOUR FAMILY, WHAT WOULD YOUR FLOOR PLAN BE LIKE? Since my wife is a designer, she would be designing it. That said, I’m particular. Reverse story and a half, chef’s kitchen that’s open and ready for entertaining- simple and sleek but not modern. The lot is most important- private, with a view of water and woods, and it must be in the mountains.
STACY BURTIN MILLS
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? CLASSIC, CHIC, CASUAL, BUSINESS, ARTSY, SPORTY, ETC.? I like the classic look. Clothes can be expensive, so I like the more classic looks that stay in style longer.
ACCORDING TO YOU, WHO DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST STYLISH CELEBRITY AND WHY? I like Audrey Hepburn. Her style was classy and elegant, and her classic style stands the test of time.
IF YOU WERE DESIGNING A NEW HOME FOR YOUR FAMILY, WHAT WOULD YOUR FLOOR PLAN BE LIKE? The new home would have to have a man cave for my husband and an exercise room/area for myself. I would also like a house with lots of windows for natural lighting. Outside of that, a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom open concept home. I would defer to Joanna and Chip Gaines for the design.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? CLASSIC, CHIC, CASUAL, BUSINESS, ARTSY, SPORTY, ETC.?
ANNE PEDERSEN
My personal style is determined by each client. I try to be “all things to all people.” What does this mean? It means that I listen to what they say, and how I work with each person is determined by their individual goals and styles. I try to help my clients by putting together the pieces of a puzzle...by taking their information, what they’ve accomplished, how much risk they are willing to take, how much time they have, etc... and come up with solutions geared to their needs and preferences.
ACCORDING TO YOU, WHO DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST STYLISH CELEBRITY AND WHY? I like Joanna Gaines in the show Fixer Upper. I like her family orientation and how she endeavors to problem-solve for each client, with the end result being a picture perfect home that appeals to their taste in every detail.
SANDY BEACHES, HIGH RISES, LAKES OR MOUNTAIN AIR- WHERE’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GET AWAY? My favorite place on earth is Santorini Island in Greece. The island’s town is set on the edge of the crater of an immersed volcano. To get to the town, one must take a tram, walk or ride a donkey up the steep incline. As you sit at the top in a café, sipping your coffee or wine, you look out over beautiful, crystalline, turquoise water and watch as ships move in and out of the crater. And, you are awed by this spectacular place.

FASHION. It can seem like a shallow concept at times, and to be honest, I have had a difficult time deciding what to write about in this month’s letter because although I do love to shop, look at fashion trends, and dress nice, it can seem very frivolous, too. I’ve heard about so many people in our community going through unthinkable tragedies and trials recently that writing about fashion at this particular time just seemed off-putting to me. And then I started to talk to some of the people I wanted to feature in this month’s fashion issue, and my perspective changed. Fashion and style is fun, but it can have great meaning and make an impact, too. I spoke with local stylists who told me about the why behind what they do—how one client going through breast cancer describes how having a wardrobe that makes her feel beautiful helps her in countless ways. We also talked about how often times if we feel put together on the outside, it can help build confidence to perhaps get that job or make that presentation and can make us feel better. It immediately reminded me of a family member of mine who had suffered from a stroke, and how much better she felt when we dressed her nicely and did her hair and makeup. It was a simple thing, but it made her feel refreshed and was good for her soul.

FASHION HONORS AUTISM RUNWAY OF EMPOWERMENT ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR
JOSHUA BOLEN IS A VISIONARY. He is a man using his own life’s undertakings, ever-evolving knowledge of the autism spectrum, and passion for the importance of human connection to create rich experiences of authentic collaboration. He is in constant thought of ways to reach a community that is oftentimes underserved and does so through a completely limitless lens. For Bolen, it is his own personal journey that has made his foundation and work with Fashion Honors Autism even more meaningful. Growing up school was a place where Bolen learned to develop the best coping mechanisms-ones that would mask his learning disabilities. He knew he wanted to be successful but could not understand why he could steadfastly study and still fail. Soon he was diagnosed with a speech impediment as well as learning difficulties that made it more challenging for him to grasp concepts. He was given a label that placed him in special education. It was this label that stunted his confidence which hindered his growth. During a time and within a culture where special education was shunned upon Bolen felt he needed to isolate that part of his life in order to survive. Most of my struggles were going to school. No one really knew I had a learning disability because I hid that from all my friends. I would run to the class I needed to go in and I would strategize every single day how I could get into this classroom without being

JAMI AND MARK NATO OPENED THE LOTTIE COFFEE AND CONE ON MAY 11 WITH AN INTENTION TO PROVIDE BOTH QUALITY PRODUCT AND SERVICE. “Whether you’re local, visiting, a repeat customer or a first-time customer, how can we go above and beyond in just serving you and making your experience, whatever it is—your time to study, your time to read, your time to connect with a friend or hang out with your family—be as perfect as possible?” Mark says. The couple bought a lake house on Lake Lotawana in November. They spent the winter renovating, commuting from their home in Leawood, and kept their eye on the corner at Gate 2 off Colbern Road where they saw potential. “It was the location where I was just, gosh, if we could really bring in our gifts for hospitality here, which we really love hosting and serving others, if we could bring that into this community—I think it could be a really great addition to what’s already happening here,” Jami says, “which we noticed in the winter, like these people really love this town, and they’re so invested in it. We wanted to be a part of that and add to what was already going on there, just with our particular style.” Once the space became available, they began renovating the shop to create a light, bright and clean feel. “We tend to commit,” Mark says. “We go all in. We wanted to make it amazing. I think part of it was

COFFEE AND COMMUNITY
(CON TI N U ED)
The couple wanted The Lottie to be welcoming not only to coffee-lovers but also parents with young children who want a place to comfortably hang out. Jami intentionally placed the kids’ play area, complete with wooden tea set and puzzle, in the center of the store for this reason. The menu offers kid-friendly items, like organic chocolate milk, and has options for those with food sensitivities. “We have a lot of food sensitivities in our family,” Jami says. “We have gluten-free kiddos and dairy-free kiddos and know how hard it is to find things that you can serve your family and feel good about. That’s what you’ll find in our fridge—we make our own vanilla syrups just because I want to feel good about what I serve people. If it’s not good enough for my family, then it’s not good enough for yours.” While they’re still fairly new to the Lake Lotawana community, both as members and businessowners, they’ve been received with enthusiasm. “It just feels serendipitous a little bit to have a heart to serve in a community and then have them welcome you with the same excitement,” Jami says. They’ve noticed guests are not only coming from the lake, but surrounding areas such as Independence and Blue Springs. They hope the shop will be a destination, not just something people will drive by, and that it continues to draw people in to the Lake Lotawana community. “It feels like we’re here helping plant something that we hope lasts a long time,” Jami says. “We’re in it for the long haul. It’s always about people over dollar signs and people over selling. I think with that heart, it’s going to be hard to fail when you love serving people first.” 28

Many contemplate divorce during the summer Summer is here. Kids are out of school and family vacations are underway. This may be a joyous time for many, but for others, spending more time together only highlights familial strife. Spouses can find themselves bickering over finances, personalities can clash, and differences in parenting styles can be accentuated. This is why there is often an uptick in divorces once the summer comes to an end and children return to school. In fact, a study from 2016 found that March and August see spikes in divorce rates, which can continue for months after children return to school. One of the keys to a successful divorce is thorough planning that starts months in advance. The summer can be a great time to gather information that is pertinent to marriage dissolution. Individuals should consider the extent of
marital assets and think about discussing them with a financial planner and a divorce attorney. Other records should be obtained, too, including those pertaining to debt, such as credit card statements. The summertime also provides a great opportunity for an individual to carefully consider whether divorce is right for them and, if possible, to talk it over with their spouse. Children are better off being kept out of the discussion until the decision is made and its affects on them are known. Yet, conversations about property division, child custody, child support and spousal maintenance can and should start early, whether with one’s spouse or formal and informal supports. Formal action to dissolve a marriage should only be undertaken when a solid understanding of the process
and its ramifications is obtained. Only then can an individual make legal decisions that further his or her best interests. This is why many choose to speak with an experienced family law attorney over the summer. Even if it is just to test the divorce waters, speaking with a legal professional can help provide clarity and guidance, perhaps setting an individual on a path toward a happier life. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers.
