That single organization is the Deschutes Public Library Foundation, which formed in 1993 with a mission to provide dependable and sustainable funding that supports and enhances library programs and outreach services that are not funded through tax dollars. “The Friends have played an important role in the library’s development,”

SWING FAULTS AND PAIN: A GOLFER’S CONUNDRUM Most golfers would agree, having a swing that drives balls straighter and further with consistency is critical to improving their game. However, most golfers have two to three golf swing faults. These swing faults can impact accuracy may cause overuse injuries or exacerbate preexisting conditions. Physical therapist and Titleist Performance Institute Certified Medical Professional, Marcus Ainsworth, PT, DPT, spends a lot of time helping golfers either get back to the sport or addressing the underlying cause of their swing fault. “Golf swing faults, when identified, can be targeted to certain parts of the body that have decreased range of motion,” said Marcus. As we age, we lose range of motion of the spine, shoulders, and hips. The loss of range of motion will force golf swing faults that lead to efficiency breakdowns in the kinematic sequence of the golf swing. The kinematic sequence is used to describe how a golfer can generate speed and transfer that speed through their body and into the golf club. For example, on the downswing, the hips initiate power that is transferred to the torso. The torso transfers torque and power to the shoulders and arms and finally to the club head. Each segment of the body builds on the previous segment, increasing speed up the chain. Additionally, each segment of the chain slows down as the next segment accelerates. When this chain of events falls out of sequence due to stiffness, weakness, or poor mechanics, we immediately see a loss of

power, distance, and consistency. “Often people have aches, such as low back pain, sciatica, knee pain or tendonitis,” said Marcus. “They see a doctor and are given a cortisone injection or a prescription antiinflammatory. While these may help for a little while, they do not address the cause of the pain, which eventually returns.” Physical therapists specialize in movement disorders. They are trained to observe how the body moves when performing certain activities and then can identify weaknesses or imbalances that are often the cause of pain. Golf Medical Professionals, like Marcus, observe and make recommendations based on how the body moves specific to golf. Usually, these recommendations begin with a video analysis of the golf swing. “When we identify swing faults and any areas of weakness or tightness, we can help patients improve them through flexibility exercises that emphasize rotation,” said Marcus. “Improving strength and range of motion is directly correlated to increased distance and consistency, as well as efficiency of ball striking.” Anyone who feels pain is limiting their golfing experience should pursue a golfspecific physical therapy evaluation. The correct treatment provided by a Golf Medical Professional can help golfers return to play pain-free and at a higher level than before their injury. You don’t even need to wait for an injury to be evaluated for your golf swing. Come in today and let us help you lower your golf score.

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTING ALIGNING VALUES WITH FINANCIAL GOALS

ARTICLE CHERYL PARTON

JUST AS CONSUMERS FIND HOW THEY SPEND THEIR DOLLARS CREATES THE WORLD THEY WANT TO LIVE IN, INVESTORS CAN IMPACT CHANGE WITH A PORTFOLIO THAT INCLUDES SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENTS. While Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) isn’t a new concept, the last decade of

Planner and owner of Cascade Financial Strategies, the only firm in Central Oregon that is a member of the US Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investing (US/ SIF). He explains, “In simplest terms, SRI is finding investments that don’t compromise a client’s values and the causes they care about, or actively finding investments that make a positive impact on those causes.” And today, it doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive to align a portfolio with both personal values and financial goals. In fact, when investors put capital in forward-thinking companies that adhere to Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria (see next page), returns can potentially be just as high, if not higher as actions pay off over time, according to a 2019 study by Morgan Stanley’s Institute for Sustainable Investing that examined 13,102 mutual funds and separately managed accounts. Investors have taken note. The US/SIF Foundation reported of professionally managed assets—$1 of every $4 invested in the United States were under ESG strategies in 2018. And investment flows into US Sustainable Funds more than tripled in 2019, according to Morningstar. “There is a way to invest where you can make an impact with your dollars,” says Jack. “You don’t need to give up returns to get returns.”

HERE ARE THREE TIPS TO BEGIN SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTING:

1.

CHOOSE YOUR CAUSE. When investing according to your values, reflect on the causes most important to you, whether related to race disparity, gender equity, religion, clean energy, fair-trade commerce, or even a niche area. Today, one of the biggest areas of concern is the climate, and websites like FossilFreeFunds.com allow you to see if funds invest in fossil fuels. Learn more about SRI from organizations like the US/SIF, and their website USSIF.com. Follow blogs like SRIBend.com for introductions, education and trends in this growing area.

2.

INVEST RESPONSIBLY. Learn about the additional scrutiny applied to an SRI portfolio. This includes the assessment of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria along with traditional research to make investment decisions. ESG criteria can help uncover an investment’s exposure to, and management of risks, opportunities or potential controversies. For example, does a company reduce waste with its packaging, or vet its supply chain (Environmental)? Does it take care of its employees with programs that promote health and safety (Social)? Does it have a diverse board of directors (Governance)?

3.

CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL. Find an advisor with a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation, the highest professional training to provide guidance in creating a comprehensive investment portfolio that melds a client’s values and long-term financial goals. Look for a CFP® that specializes in Socially Responsible Investing to help navigate the complex, but rewarding landscape of socially-conscious investing. nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. CONTINUED >

Here’s how to read nutrition labels so you can better keep track and know what you are eating.

You need a variety of vitamins in your day, so check the percentages and make sure you are getting lots of different nutrients. Vitamin C is great, but it is possible to have too much Vitamin C and neglect Vitamin A. Calcium and iron are important for strength and to avoid injuries, so make sure you get enough of those each day as well. An easy trick is to try eating a vegetable of every color each day.

You are the best expert of you, and you get to make all of the final decisions for your body. Do your research, get all of the info that you can and then decide how you want to divide up your nutrition each day. One of the most effective things you can do is keep a log of your moods, how your skin looks, how your hair feels, your water intake and your energy levels. While your fitness goals are important, how you feel each day is so much more important. It’s easy to lose weight by dramatically cutting calories, but that can leave you feeling irritable with low energy, and it’s ultimately not worth it. Take care of yourself and think about how the choices you make will affect your health in the long run. And never forget that you are enough, just the way you are.

The amount of moisture in a compost bin should be likened to a wet sponge, not too wet or too dry, and always with enough room for air. Turn. Turning the materials in a compost bin is one of the most important things for a healthy compost. Turning not only eliminates odor, it aerates the pile and gives it the oxygen that is necessary for rapid decompression. Because air and heat need to move through the materials, turning it at least once a week is recommended.
