Thankful for Bridgewater HAPPY THANKSGIVING, BRIDGEWATER! As November rolls around, we start to look forward to the holiday season. The winding down of the year brings about a time of reflection—remembering everything we’ve done and accomplished. We reminisce about the turkey disasters of years past while curling up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie.

Thanksgiving brings the most anticipated meal of the year. Executive Chef Bob Larsen of Delicious Heights Outpost Basking Ridge provides us with an exquisite "Fall Harvest Salad" that will delight your guests’ taste buds. While gathering friends and family is good for the soul, it also comes with the stress of getting your house guest-ready. In this issue, Kevin Mullins, owner of Yankenfera Commercial and Residential Cleaning Services, gives our readers tips to help prepare their homes for the holidays. Kevin’s advice—declutter!

On a personal level, having published our first issue of Bridgewater Lifestyle just three months ago, this month, we reflect on the people, experiences and opportunities we’ve been blessed with. Developing a monthly magazine comes with its fair share of challenges, but the community support and recognition has been humbling. ROMAN JEWELERS 'SHARES THEIR HEART' When a customer purchases the exclusive "Share Your Heart" pendant ($100) at Roman Jewelers, the profit ($50) is donated to the person’s favorite charity. There is a story behind every heart sold, so when it is worn, it helps to spread awareness and strike up meaningful conversations. The "Share Your Heart" pendant is sold to individuals in the Bridgewater store and through their website, but many charities have also sold the pendant directly. In the past year, nearly $5,000 has been donated to local charities.

K ITCHEN: The kitchen is where all the action happens! This is the time of year to give a little extra attention to the appliances, especially the refrigerator. Kevin recommends checking labels and removing all expired food and condiments. Then give the shelves a good wipedown; people will be going in and out frequently, and shouldn’t see anything unsightly. Make your kitchen appear more spacious by putting away infrequently used appliances.

LI V ING ROOM: Kevin recommends you declutter the living room, the most utilized gathering area during a party. He suggests removing any throw blankets and excess pillows that guests tend to toss aside when the room gets crowded and typically end up on a well-traveled floor. When it comes to cleaning floors, Kevin recommends an easy cleaning solution. "Simply mix 20% vinegar and 80% water. It not only cleans the floors really well but it is also chemical-free, which is great if you have kids or pets." Also, be sure to dust your light fixtures and switch out any burned out light bulbs; your observant guests will notice!

Kevin pictured with his sister, Fernanda, and his mother and business partner, Yendry.

Bridgewater Lifestyle | November 2019

COAT CLOSET: The decluttering theme continues with the coat closet. "Most people forget the number of guests that will be coming through the door. It's important to remove anything you don't regularly use, to leave plenty of space for your guest's coats,” says Kevin. Preparing the closet ahead of time prevents unnecessary foot traffic to other bedrooms to store coats and bags.

Ring the Bell LIFE BEGINS AT THE END OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

ARTICLE JAKE SLOWINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY MEERLOO PHOTOGRAPHY

22

Bridgewater Lifestyle | November 2019

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE THRILL OF LETTING A METAL HATCHET FLY OUT OF YOUR HANDS INTO A WOODEN TARGET. At Stumpy's Hatchet House Green Brook, when your hatchet hits the bullseye, you’re gifted the opportunity to ring the bell, alerting all hatchet throwers of your achievement. The exhilaration and sense of accomplishment is a rush that can’t be explained. It must be experienced. Monica and Mark Milan, owners of Stumpy’s, give us the backstory on how their business came to be and why it’s one of the fastest-growing recreational activities in the country. Two years ago, Monica and Mark were searching for a business venture. One of Mark’s friends reached out to him about a new concept, indoor hatchet throwing, and suggested he buy into the Stumpy’s franchise, which only had one location at the time. Mark told his friend, “That sounds great, but I need to make a living,” and hung up the phone. Mark’s friend was persistent, though, and let him in on a little secret. Stumpy’s had been filmed for a Shark Tank segment, and they were working through the specifics of a lucrative deal. At the time, Monica was on vacation in Spain, where Mark would soon be joining. Mark called her on her trip and asked, “What do you think about investing our life savings in hatchet throwing?” Monica’s epic response was the catalyst that brought Stumpy’s Hatchet House Green Brook into reality. “Seriously—do it! You’ve almost done dumber things.” Years earlier, Monica and Mark were both diagnosed with severe Lyme disease. For Mark, it became neurological, but Monica was given the prognosis that within 10 years she would likely be wheelchair-bound. Supporting each other, they aggressively fought the disease and now both are nearly symptom-free. This experience gave them a new lease on life, and is why Monica supported Mark and advised him to jump at the opportunity. He signed the territory agreement for the franchise the next week without ever having visited a hatchet-throwing house. Finding the right location for Stumpy’s was the couple's first hurdle. After searching for more than eight months, they were lost on their way to a birthday party and accidentally took Route 22 instead of Route 78. It was then that they stumbled upon the old Capital Lighting building, which was the perfect location for their new business. In June 2018, they opened their doors, and the customers quickly followed. Today, Stumpy’s provides countless hours of entertainment. Guests are invited to bring their own food, beer and wine. Hard liquor is not permitted. While it’s the perfect birthday party and rustic date night location, Stumpy’s really shines in their team-building events. Local businesses, CONTINUED >

corporations and charities bring in groups to bond and learn to work together better—all while hurling axes at a target. There are varying ability levels in every group, from naturals to those afraid to even pick up a hatchet. “That’s when the magic happens," Mark says. "The confident people become supportive of those who are really hesitant, and you see their encouragement turn into camaraderie and competition. People see this side of their coworkers that they might not see at work, which gets people to blossom and bond together.” At Stumpy’s, safety is paramount, and the operation is tried and true. The throwing areas are properly caged, and rules are strictly enforced. Customers follow the instructions, and there have not been any accidents. Monica and Mark took the plunge into the hatchet-throwing world to escape corporate America and to live happier, more present lives with their two children. They have hit life in the bullseye and are ringing the bell.

CULINARY CREATIONS

A FALL HARVEST SALAD for Your Thanksgiving Table BROUGHT TO YOU BY EXECUTIVE CHEF BOB LARSEN OF DELICIOUS HEIGHTS THIS MONTH, WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING, WHICH FOR MOST OF US, BRINGS THE MOST ANTICIPATED MEAL OF THE YEAR. While certain dishes on your table are staples made from recipes likely handed down from generation to generation, you may also be looking to try something new. For November’s Culinary Creation

Basking Ridge, to give us the recipe to the delicious, seasonal salad that will be found on his Thanksgiving table. This fall harvest salad will take you no time to make, and your guests will be delighted by the plate presentation. Being the oldest child and grandchild, Chef Bob was always tasked with helping in the kitchen. His interest in cooking was influenced by both of his grandmas, one of Danish and the other of Polish descent. After graduating from college, Chef Bob was accepted to law school, but ultimately the siren's call of the kitchen pulled him in a different direction, and instead, he enrolled at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. For the past 10 years, Chef Bob has been working for Delicious Heights, throughout their various locations. Chef Bob enjoys working at Delicious Heights because there are so many ingredients available at his fingertips. Between the restaurant and banquet kitchens at the Outpost Basking Ridge location, he is fully stocked at all times, giving him the autonomy to create culinary masterpieces. The restaurants have a set menu of customer favorites and a seasonally inspired

specials page that Chef Bob changes every two weeks. Last fall, Chef Bob created this fall harvest salad recipe for Delicious Heights' Pumpkin Week. “The owner walked in with a barrel of pumpkins and told me to have at it,” Chef Bob says. To try this salad and Chef Bob’s other exquisite creations, visit any Delicious Heights location (Basking Ridge, Berkeley Heights or Bedminster). The owners, brothers Ralph and Domenick Acquaviva, also recently purchased the Bridgewater Manor in February and brought their seasoned catering team to their newest location. 28
