Pocket Photog ARTICLE KAREN KWONG PHOTOGRAPHY BY MUSEN, LLC

DOES ANYONE EVEN CARRY A CAMERA WITH THEM ANYMORE? Nowadays, most photos are taken on the lightweight cellphones that we already keep in our pockets. This provides an amazing convenience when documenting our everyday memories. Being a professional photographer, a lot of my friends turn to me for advice on how to take better photos with their phones. One common misconception is that the more advanced your phone model is and the more picture taking features your phone has, the better your photos will turn out. The quality of the lens, as well as the firmware inside the phone does contribute; however, as technologies advance, many phones are capable of taking higher resolution photos under various conditions. Truthfully, the phone doesn’t matter all that much. The fundamentals of how to take better photos remain the same regardless of what equipment you are using. A famous quote from photographer Dario Endara summarizes it best, “The most important element of a good photo is the ability of the photograph to communicate with the viewer. It should be able to tell a story through its composition, lighting, and most importantly its subject matter.” Therefore, when taking photos with your phone, think subject matter, lighting and composition first. The subject matter is what you want to focus on in your photo — people, food, scenery, etc. Before taking the photo ask yourself, “What story do I want to tell my audience and what mood do I want to communicate?” Composition refers to organizing the elements in your photo. The understanding of lighting will dramatically improve the quality of your photos. Here are four easy tips that anyone can master that will instantly transform your phone photos. DISTANCE LEARNING SUPERHEROES THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION OF BRIDGEWATER-RARITAN PAYS TRIBUTE TO OUR DEDICATED TEACHERS & STAFF

ARTICLE KRISTY SHURINA PHOTOGRAPHY TIER ONE VENTURES LLC

Bridgewater Lifestyle | September 2020

“MRS. RICHARDSON WAS A CHAMPION OF CONTINUED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND DISPLAYED A HIGH LEVEL OF CARE, CONCERN, AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DURING DISTANCE-LE ARNING.” — ANNE HIGGINS THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR WAS UNLIKE ANY WE’VE SEEN BEFORE. In June the Education Foundation of BridgewaterRaritan reached out to the community and facilitated a teacher tribute to celebrate the teachers and educational support professionals who went above and beyond to make distance learning a positive experience. Educators were nominated by parents, students and other staff members for their extraordinary work. The Education Foundation is a non-profit organization run by trustees who live or work in the area and are dedicated to raising funds to pay for innovative projects and programs for the Bridgewater-Raritan School District. Since their inception they have funded over $600K in classroom grants and scholarships for students across the district. Mrs. Carolyn Richardson, a first grade teacher at Van Holten Primary School, was nominated by four separate families for her seamless transition to distance learning! An educator in the district since 1998, Bridgewater is in her blood. Mrs. Richardson’s husband, Paul Richardson, is a graduate of the class of 1977, and their children Jamie (class of 2005) and John (class of 2008) are also alumni. According to parent Anne Higgins, “At one point our son felt especially sad and overwhelmed that he couldn’t be with his friends and teachers. We shared those concerns with Mrs. Richardson and she immediately made arrangements to connect with him one on one. Listening to their Google Meet from the other room just filled our hearts with joy. She filled him up with confidence and was somehow able to provide

cares about her students with her whole heart, regarding both their academic success, and their emotional wellbeing. She worked so hard to deliver a comprehensive distance learning curriculum, and even took the time to write positive feedback on every assignment. As a former teacher myself, I consider Mrs. Richardson an excellent educator.” When asked how she kept her students engaged, Mrs. Richardson explains, “Engament from a distance presents a unique challenge, as our students are now separated by a screen and distracted by the comforts of their own home. One important aspect of our distance learning was making space for students to share about themselves, whether it was their pet or sibling. Similar to our physical classroom, our students needed to connect to their digital classroom. This was new and exciting for the students, and time for connecting in their new space was vital for instruction to occur. All of our lessons always included time for social connection, so that we retained the classroom community we had built since September. “ The Education Foundation would like to thank all of the educators in our district who worked tirelessly to help our students and their families through this historically challenging school year. Congratulations to all of our educators who did amazing things in their virtual classrooms and were nominated for this recognition: Gretchen Alvarez — Eisenhower Intermediate School Allison Bausback — BRHS Megan Bianchini — Crim Primary School Kathy Bonjione — Van Holten Primary School Colleen Buzby — BRHS Pat Cahill — BRHS Barron Caromano — Eisenhower Intermediate School Antonina Caruso — Bradley Gardens Primary School James Challandes — BRHS Palma Challandes — Hamilton Primary School Samantha Cichon — BRHS Rosemary Coelho — JFK Primary School Heather Colbert — BRHS Beth Colucci — BRMS 26

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER DIVORCE? The decision to end your marriage can be agonizing. I recommend consulting with a counselor first to see if divorce is something you really want. Ask yourself hard questions. Do you live separate lives? When you make decisions for the future, do you consider what your spouse wants? Are you disrespecting each other? Are there long periods of silence, and have you even given up on arguing? Do you feel emotionally drained and dread going home? If you answered “yes” to these and similar questions, you need to consult an attorney and start preparing. CHOOSING THE RIGHT ATTORNEY You should choose an attorney with a focused practice in family law, with a solid knowledge in the divorce laws of the state and who is familiar with the county court where your divorce will be filed. If you have anything significant at stake in your marriage — children, major assets or debts or an alimony issue — you should consider hiring a certified matrimonial law attorney. Come to the consultation with questions, including budgetary concerns and your thoughts on how you would like your divorce handled. GET PREPARED You need to understand how divorce will affect you financially, how custody and child support will be handled, if you will receive or have to pay alimony, and what your future holds. As soon as you decide to divorce, it’s essential to gather documents, do budgets and understand your current financial situation. Your attorney will need detailed financial documentation on assets, debts and monthly expenses. You will also need to provide historical information so the attorney can understand your lifestyle and earning potential if you are not working. This will allow the attorney to give an educated opinion on what your financial future looks like. This information will also help you decide, for example, if you should return to school to increase your earning ability. BE RESOURCEFUL IN GATHERING INFORMATION It’s more difficult — but not impossible — for spouses who do not handle the money to get the financial background the attorney needs. Most of this information is on tax returns. If you have joint accounts, you can ask the bank for paper statements. If you truly have no access to financial records but have your spouse’s social security number, you can hire a private investigator to do an asset search. CONSIDER CHILDREN If you have children, they are the priority. Determine if parents will live close by or if one will move out of the area. Does your child have special needs that should be considered? What expenses — extracurricular activities, cars, college — should be addressed? BUILD A SUPPORT NETWORK Your attorney is not your best friend, your spiritual advisor or your therapist. Identify friends and family or make appointments with a professional who can help you work through the emotions of divorcing. Now is also a good time to focus on self-care: exercise, meditate, join a club or start volunteering. danddfamilylaw.com 32
