7 YEARS OFF YOUR LIFE Periodontal diseases are often referred to as “The Other Silent Killer” because most people don’t even realize they have it, and don’t know how dangerous it is. Half of adults over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease, and over 70% of adults 65 and older have gum disease. Most people don’t know they have gum disease because it typically doesn’t cause any pain. So, chances are you too, could be infected with parasites. Conditions linked to Gum Disease: Alzheimer’s Disease / Diabetes / Rheumatoid Arthritis / Hypertension / Lung Cancer / Premature Birth

THE NEMETH & KATRANJI APPROACH We are the only office in Michigan using a microscope to diagnose gum disease. If we do find that you have gum disease, our laser gum treatment not only sterilizes the pockets in the gum, but also helps re-attach the gum to the tooth to close the pocket and eliminate your infection.

continues to do. This month brings with it bright blue skies, colorful flowers and, of course, the celebration of mothers. In this issue, we not only celebrate mothers, but we also highlight a few of the wonderful women in our community: CEOs, entrepreneurs and savvy business women, just to name a few. I know this has been a rollercoaster couple months for the whole world. We have been thrust into a challenging situation that we were not expecting, but we are all in this together. We know you are going through your own personal struggles, but we will fight through and come out better on the other side. It is in times of struggle and peril that our true resolve comes out, and we realize how much we can accomplish. I believe that all of us will be stronger at the end of this short period of time.

us as they have new needs,” JFS Chief Program Officer Yuliya Gaydayenko said in March.

Gaydayenko’s fellow Chief Program Officer Dini Peterson said that when something like this happens, JFS is there to make sure its services are accessible to all people in the community, even those who never knew JFS existed. For example, local mothers could benefit from reaching out as the staff is trained to help them navigate this change. “We have social workers who are great with young children and can talk to mothers about giving themselves grace and being patient with themselves,” Peterson said. “There are so many resources out there, and our staff is able to help comb through those resources and, for those who need financial assistance, connect them with a case manager.” Peterson also mentioned that the team is making sure that women who are in homes with an abuser are getting the extra emotional support and care they need, as well as assisting with seeking out shelter in some cases. “What we do at our core has not really changed,” Senior Director of Marketing and Communications at JFS Lindsay Leder explained. “We’ve adapted our services, in light of the current situation, so we can continue taking care of the most vulnerable in our community. That has still stayed central in the midst of all of this.” JFS has more than 30 programs that serve thousands of people each year, including those for older adults, mental health and wellness and safety net concerns, as well as those for the Russian speaking and Orthodox communities: + Older Adult programs include Assistive Technology, Chronic Care Management, ElderCare Solutions of Michigan, Friendly Visitors, Geriatric Care Management, Holocaust Survivor Assistance, Home Care, Kosher Meals on Wheels, Mind University and Transportation. + Mental Health and Wellness programs offered are A Single Soul Suicide Prevention, Behavioral Health Navigation, Cancer Thrivers Network for Jewish Women, Community Education and Counseling. + Safety Net programs consist of Domestic Abuse Intervention, Family Support Services, Health Care Navigation and Legal Referral Service. + Russian Speaking Community services encompass both Mental Health and Translation and Interpretation. + Orthodox Community services include, among others, Passover Assistance, Safety Kid Training and School-Based Social Workers. “Every day we’re continuing conversations on how we can help both clients and non-clients meet their basic needs and connect them with help as everyone’s lives have been turned upside down,” Peterson said. “JFS doesn’t only have to be here for a crisis though. We’re happy to be that safety net but can certainly also be there for life changes in general.” If you’re looking for help, want to contribute as a volunteer or are seeking to support JFS’ work as a donor, call (248)-592-2313 or visit jfsdetroit.org. E N WOM FIVE LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS SHARE SOME OF THEIR SECRETS TO SUCCESS.

H E AT H E R D A R W I S H VICE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF RAYDIANCE FOR WOMEN

HOW DO YOU RECHARGE AFTER A BUSY DAY? I religiously walk my two English Bulldogs as soon as I get home from work every day. It allows me to be grounded, breathe in the fresh air and laugh at the silly things they do. WHAT HOBBIES HELP PULL YOUR MIND AWAY FROM BUSINESS WHEN YOU NEED THAT DOWN TIME? Motorcycle rides and food! My husband and I have a Harley, and we love to ride. We love watching the local news or seeing an ad somewhere of a new restaurant to try! If it sounds delicious, we hop on the bike and make it a destination to ride to. Also, weekend getaways are the best. We love to travel to Grand Rapids, Grand Haven or anywhere in Michigan; we truly live in a beautiful state. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? I’m highly motivated by seeing our happy clients, clients that appreciate our hair replacement process as much as the actual purchase. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into making one of our Exact Duplication Custom hair pieces. We take a lot of pride in what we do and hearing the success stories, and how thrilled they are, definitely keeps me going!

S TA C I E Z O T K O V I C H FOUNDER AND CEO OF THE POSITIVE SHIFT AND STACIE RENE

WHAT HOBBIES HELP PULL YOUR MIND AWAY FROM BUSINESS WHEN YOU NEED THAT DOWN TIME? I always have to set personal goals for myself. They’ve ranged from running marathons and races to starting my “Real Talk with Stacie René” interview segments to simply challenging myself to go outside my comfort zone and try new things. I am intricately involved with the community and committed to perpetuating random acts of kindness. We live on the lake and enjoy lake-life activities like boating, kayaking and paddle boarding. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? My family, specifically my husband of 16 years, Craig, and not letting my own value diminish. I make sure I never settle, become complacent or give up. It’s important to show my two children, Samantha and Zachary, that no matter how old I am, life will throw curves, and I have to take them head-on. I love showing the importance of life skills that they don’t learn in school while also motivating them. WHAT ARE SOME POSITIVE THOUGHTS THAT YOU KEEP IN MIND DURING THE TOUGH TIMES? I know life is about ups and downs but also know how to handle those situations, i.e. getting a grip on negativity, insecurities and a depressive state before it starts to affect me. I understand that I have to stop the negative thoughts, self-doubt and destructive behavior before it becomes my new personality and habit. I stress the importance of knowing who you are, and at the end of the day, knowing who you want to be.

It reminds me to contribute rather than complain. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR MOTHER’S DAY THIS YEAR? Hopefully going to get brunch with my family to celebrate with my wonderful mother.
