FINDING FINANCIAL FREEDOM ONE-ON-ONE WITH FINANCIAL ADVISER PHILLIP HAMMETT

ARTICLE ABBY STRICKLAND AND PHILLIP HAMMETT PHOTOGRAPHY AL TORRES PHOTOGRAPHY 16

Memorial Lifestyle | October 2019

PHILLIP HAMMETT IS A FINANCIAL ADVISER WORKING AT THE FITZPATRICK GROUP. He’s making big waves within the Houston financial scene through his passion and determination to think outside the box. I had the pleasure of sitting down with him and getting to know all about his journey and how he helps his clients embark on the path to financial freedom. 1. CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I was born in Louisiana and moved to Houston when I was 5. I’m a proud University of Houston alumnus and enjoy helping the community stay connected. I enjoy athletics and have been passionate about sports cars as far back as I can remember—which is to 1994 when my dad hung a Porsche poster on my wall. 2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A FINANCIAL ADVISER? Growing up, it wasn’t in the plan, but an unexpected opportunity fell into my lap at just the right moment in 2015. The interview process emphasized my values and beliefs rather than just my experience and education. I’ve never conformed to labels and believe it’s important to stand out from the crowd, so I began to see this career as a natural fit. 3. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR THE FITZPATRICK GROUP, AND HOW HAS IT AFFECTED YOUR CAREER? Well, at a golf event three years later, my recruitment began, and before I knew it, I had an interview with the president lined up. I was shocked at how much he taught me within 20 minutes, and I began to realize this was a move I had to make—both for myself and my clients. It’s been a year now, and I haven’t looked back or slowed down! The Fitzpatrick Group is fairly young at about 4 years old, and I’ve been a part of the team for the past year. As I began, I relished the chance to be challenged and pushed to grow out of my comfort zone, but I have to say that expectations of me were so high that it was tough to wrap my head around. 4. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? I want to continue to improve myself every single day, and I expect that to translate into a leadership role that will eventually see me leading the company’s top team. True leaders inspire others to take up leadership! 5. WHAT IS THE BEST FINANCIAL ADVICE YOU GIVE YOUR CLIENTS? I encourage all of my clients to think about their goals in chronological order. Yes, retirement planning is critical, but is that the closest objective? If not, they also need to plan for the more immediate future such as purchasing a home or having children. By envisioning short, medium and then long term goals, progress flows smoothly along without the need to ever backtrack. 6. HOW DO YOU EARN THE TRUST OF YOUR CLIENTS? You have to be relatable! I’m an open book, and I share some of my personal experiences (good and bad), which lets my clients know that I understand where they are coming from. I tell them right off the bat that they are the boss of their income, while I’m a teammate who can teach them how to keep more of it. I also make it a point to provide multiple options. I show them side-by-side comparisons covering pros and cons and answer them honestly about which option I would choose and why. This allows them to feel in control of their decision and that I have their best interests in mind.

“I WANT TO CONTINUE TO IMPROVE MYSELF EVERY SINGLE DAY, AND I EXPECT THAT TO TRANSLATE INTO A LEADERSHIP ROLE THAT WILL EVENTUALLY SEE ME LEADING THE COMPANY’S TOP TEAM.” October 2019 | Memorial Lifestyle

WORK ON YOUR PART. THE INEXPENSIVE HOME WINE TASTING MENU First, if you set up a tasting

menu of small bites in which everything is easily available to the guests, then virtually no knives, forks or plates will have to be used—or cleaned! Here’s a generic example of a very inexpensive event for anywhere from 2-30 people at your home. FIRST, THE FOOD: 1. Have a large plate or two with assorted cheeses and crackers for those who might need more food. Goat cheese goes with sparkling wine, creamy Danish havarti goes with chardonnay, and Brie goes with most red wines. 2. For the food and wine, match sparkling wine with almost any hors d’ oeuvres—honey goat cheese on crackers, assorted nuts, hummus and veggies, etc. Next, pair a white wine such as a chardonnay with any type of seafood, like boiled shrimp. Don’t use spicy red sauce—it will kill the

THE MODERATELY EXPENSIVE WINE TASTING MENU Here, it gets more specific. Continue with the plate or two of cheese and crackers for those with big appetites. Stick with the same program of passing, bite-size, etc. The recommendedwines are all in the $20-$40 retail range. 1. Pair Roederer Estate Sparkling Wine (California) or Santa Margherita Brut Rosé (Italy) with smoked salmon with crème fraiche, capers and lemon juice on little toasts and truffle mousse topped with gherkins on little toasts. 2. Pair Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay or Jordan Chardonnay with your favorite seafood with tartar or remoulade sauce. 3. Pair J. Lohr Pinot Noir Fog’s Reach, J.
