Using mainly YouTube videos as examples, he created his own gadgets, i.e., a punch activated flame thrower. Last summer, along with his mentor at Southwest Research Institute, he started building his own designs for exoskeletons to be used in practical applications. A personal project of his is a self-defense exoskeleton (see photo) and an exoskeleton designed for fire fighters to improve efficiency in the field. It has hydraulics to assist with heavy lifting. He has received some impressive feedback and will have it tested in a real-life situation when it is completed. Victor is applying to several universities including The University of Texas/Austin; MIT; Carnegie Mellon; Cornell and the California Institute of Technology. It was a pleasure getting to know Victor and his career aspirations; we wish him only the best in his future endeavors!

PAWSITIVE PAMPERING THE PURRFECT WAY TO CREATE COZY SPACES FOR YOUR PETS

ARTICLE WHITNEY GRUNDER

IT IS BARELY FOUR IN THE MORNING AND MERCEDES IS ALREADY PLAYING WITH THE BLINDS, CONVENIENTLY LOCATED ABOVE MY HEAD. Clearly a ruse to gain my attention and yet still her very sleepy human will not respond. I left her with no other option but to commence phase two of the sleep disruption process. She begins knocking down every last item from my night stand, each one landing with a clunky thud a little louder than its predecessor. She wins. Cat – 1, Owner – 0. Half asleep, I drag myself from my bed and begrudgingly find my way into the kitchen to feed her breakfast. Grace and Lucille perk up and follow Mercedes’ lead. Cat, dog, or other furry creature lovers – you may share similar experiences with your own cuddly companions. They may not be waking you before your alarm clock goes off (lucky you), but the bottom line is our fur babies want attention and sometimes even demand it. Pets were spoiled with a 14

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED) Space fit for a pampered pet

lot of quality time with their humans during the COVID-19 quarantine, so much so that even THEY grew tired of looking at us. As humans re-emerge into the world and return to some sense of normalcy, we once again leave our pets to their own devices. In order to keep our sweet pets feeling cozy, entertained, and hopefully prevent a favorite pair of shoes from becoming a new favorite chew toy, we can give our homes a little extra love and make our pets feel a little extra special. Here are a few tips: DESIGNATE SPACES ALL THEIR OWN: As our pets are members of the family, they too need their own safe haven to stretch out for a nap, play, or hide away when they need a break from their humans. Consider designating a space in the home (laundry room, a nook under a staircase, a corner of your living room, etc.) that is theirs and theirs alone. They will of course continue to take over all other spaces, but this will add a little extra comfort at home. In this designated space, keep beds, crates, or other surfaces that are cozy for your pets and easy to clean. For example, Lucille loves her tall kitty tower placed next to the guest room window so she can bathe in the afternoon sunlight, while Mercedes prefers to sleep in her doughnut-shaped bed in the living room. You may also consider keeping their toys in this same space so they can easily find them. Of course, do not be surprised to find these toys in strange places around your home. I am constantly stepping on tattered unicorns and even find the occasional sparkly mouse under my pillow. CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLAY: Dare to get creative! Spend time bonding and interacting with your pets with more playtime or find another furry companion so they can play together when you are absent. Keeping these loved ones engaged can mean creating elaborate bathing stations or dog houses/kitty condos or building teepees for them to crawl through. My cats love running through their collapsible tunnels, batting at the attached ball and string, or poking their heads through the various holes. Remember, playtime does not have to cost anything at all. Find empty boxes you are not using to create indoor jungle gyms. Outdoor pet owners - consider making an obstacle course using a plastic backyard slide, old tires, cast-off hula hoops, baby pools, or other items. Just be sure you check for sharp parts, splinters, or small pieces that could become choking hazards. Creating this playtime can be something the whole family gets involved in! PLAN IN PLACE: COVID-19 taught us to expect the unexpected. Have a family member or close family friend as a backup person who can care for your pet in case of an emergency. GIVE & RECEIVE LOVE: Lastly, do not forget to embrace the quality time you have together. Cuddling up on the couch with a movie or a good book, while snuggling up to your sweet fur babies can help ease depression and anxiety for all parties involved. 16

One of the barn cats

F u r, f e a t h e r, shell - prime ingredients for a family menagerie SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM!

FOR THE RUST AND VOULGARIS FAMILIES, THEIR HOMES ARE A TRUE EXPRESSION OF THEIR LOVE FOR ANIMALS. Rhonda and Micah Voulgaris and their daughters, Marley and Reese, along with Rhonda’s parents, Randall and Marzi Rust, have turned their property into their own private animal sanctuary. At first glance, the beautiful ranch located on Rust Lane between Boerne and Bergheim is just that, a gorgeous and quintessential Hill Country landscape. Take a closer glance, though, and you will find a menagerie of pets adding quirky and fun character to this sprawling family home. Rhonda says her kids play a huge role in caring for the animals. Twelve-year-old Reese already has big plans to be a wild game keeper. Reese and her 14-year-old sister Marley actively participate in the 4H Club and take part in the Kendall County Jr. Livestock show. They raise show pigs which requires the sale of their animal to build their college savings. Sale day tends to be the most difficult day of the entire year for the girls and the only thing that seems to ease the pain is the

cat, prefers to stay indoors with his humans and is the only cat the five dogs accept as their family. Another factor that makes this ranch so unique is that it includes an outdoor enclosure which spans 4,000 square feet – the perfect environment for reptiles. Sissy the “tiny one” is a 4-inch Russian tortoise, Torty “the big boy” is a six-inch Russian tortoise, and Jersey the “big one” is a ten-inch Sulcata tortoise. Torty was adopted from the Central Texas Tortoise Rescue. The family is currently waiting to adopt Titus, another Desert tortoise from a friend who can no longer care for him. They grow all their tortoise food including lettuce, vegetables, and grasses in the garden. They receive lots of attention, though one of these beloved reptiles is quite the escape artist. Sissy was gone for ten days in May, but then found her way home with the help of a friend who saw her walking down the road. Finally, the ducks, Milo and Otis both females, conveniently share the tortoise area. These ducks do not try to fly out or escape as they are quite content hanging with their hard-shelled neighbors and take care of all the insects trying to move in. The Rust and Voulgaris families hope to continue to expand their collection of pets. Multiple generations live on this land and truly love caring for it. Every member of the family is invested in looking after their animals and continue to grow their knowledge about them. What better way to bond as a family than to spend time outdoors with a diverse troupe of wildlife? While at times chaotic, their moments as a family are never boring. After all, with each new addition to the family, there is a new adventure and a new story to tell. 20

YOUR

ENGINES – THAT IS, IF YOU CAN REACH YOUR FOOT TO THE ACCELERATOR. You look left and then right. No other vehicle matches your style or your elegance. Hot pink, electric body. Sleek, clean lines. Pure Italian luxury, customized to fit you. Big wheels meant for even bigger roads ahead. You trace the steering wheel carefully, preparing your mind for the challenge ahead. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. You recall your overwhelming excitement when your parents gifted you with your very own set of wheels on your birthday. It was finally time to put some miles on these wheels. Wheels that were designed for performance. You were born to race. To win. You feel your heart accelerate, and your adrenaline pumping. Your mom begins the count down, “Three…Two…One, GO!!” It’s time for this baby to move. You fire on all cylinders, and without hesitation, you take off. You can hardly hear your brother crying in the distance. Should you slow down, give the others a chance to catch up? After a fleeting moment of consideration, you decide to speed ahead. You would rather take her as far as she can go, so you push the gas pedal once more. The engine roars and the sound is music to your ears. You feel so free on the open road, not a cul-de-sac in sight. You notice you are moving at your highest speed yet, 5 mph. Your hair whips behind you, blowing in the wind you’ve created. You smile. The others never stood a chance. You check your rear view mirror briefly. There they are, tiny specs, like ants trailing in your dust. You feel light, fearless, euphoric, frenetic. You feel young again. The need for speed is yours alone.

IN ORDER TO CONTROL YOUR MONEY, HERE ARE ACTIONS YOU MUST TAKE TO STAY ON TRACK. Save receipts from transactions using an ATM card, debit card, or check and record the information in your checking account register. Use your transaction register to add deposits, subtract withdrawals, and track your current balance. Some transactions may not have been processed by your bank yet. DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
