Fashionably Late to the Style Game WHEN I WAS 15, I’D RUN TO MAILBOX EVERY MONTH ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE ARRIVAL OF MY SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE. What shoes were in for fall? Does red lipstick go with my skin tone? How do I properly pluck my eyebrows? The answers to these important questions were all found in the glossy pages at my fingertips. As

I grew older, my mailbox groaned with the weight of Elle, Cosmopolitan and Vogue (their fall issue was bigger than the phone book), but my excitement never waned. I gobbled up the photo spreads and tips, feeding my fashion fever to the best of my ability (because Lord knows I could never afford anything in those magazines). Being a busy working mom, I read more Dr. Seuss than Vanity Fair these days, but our September fashion and beauty issue reignited a fire that had cooled some time ago. Maybe it was the fall fashion spread—I want that snakeskin skirt from Alley Boutique!—or perhaps it was the beauty secrets from Embody SKIN Care that struck the match. It’s quite possible it was the enviable closets from Closets by Design. Whatever the spark, my inner 15-year-old was jumping for joy

GOOD TIMES
Loveland’s Independence Day Celebration Loveland knows how to throw America a birthday bash. The Fourth of July is more than just fireworks in this town—bands, brews, food trucks, a circus stunt show, kids games and a parade were just some of the revelry patrons enjoyed. Of course, Rozzi’s fireworks lit up the night to finish the festivities off with a bang.
Mark and Jennifer went to see Mamma Mia! at the Loveland Stage Company with their friends Bob and Annette. Bob mentioned he was looking for a new financial planner—his portfolio just wasn’t delivering. Mark and Jennifer asked Bob if he’d ever looked at the style of his investments. “What does style have to do with investing?” asked Bob. They told Bob about a similar conversation they’d had with their advisor at Family Wealth Advisory Group: •Stock and equity mutual funds are often referred to by style category: Growth, Value, or Blend. •Growth funds look for companies that reinvest earnings back into themselves to grow the company—so tend to be more aggressive and higher in risk. •Value funds look for stocks where the price is low compared to the value of the company—so when the market realizes the stock is a bargain, the price goes up. •Value companies often pay a dividend providing the owner with income. •Most important, a good portfolio has a mix or blend of both, based on your personal needs. This made perfect sense to Bob—he called Family Wealth Advisory Group that week. Wondering the same? Family Wealth Advisory Group is here to answer all of your questions.

“We know our audience … it’s not just Loveland, it’s all age groups,” Ann Marie says. “We try to offer a little bit of everything … a little taste of what we saw in New York and LA—for someone who wants to look on trend but doesn’t want to break the bank.” And this season, it’s all about the print. Snakeskin and leopard in shoes, booties, purses and scarves. Powerfully patterned pieces now in unexpected shades of red, yellow and green. “Don’t be afraid of the animal print,” Ann Marie assures. “That little pop of pattern—one piece, one little accessory—can elevate your entire wardrobe.” Add one chic piece to your favorite pair of jeans and white tee (that Current Air leopard coat!) to transform your entire look. Add snakeskin booties to the same jeans and tee—you’ve raised the fashion bar again. Fall is also seasoned with vibrant, rich colors—eggplant, burnt orange and burgundy in big, bold stripes or monochromatic looks. Off-the-shoulder cuts and eye-catching angles. Graphic tees with a midi skirt and fall booties, or sneakers with a favorite dress and a jean jacket. “Really, it’s all about confidence,” Ann Marie says. “That’s what makes you look the most stylish, truly … the most fashionable. Not every trend is for everybody. If you wear anything with confidence, if you feel good in it, then that’s the most beautiful of all.” AlleyBoutique.com 201 W. Loveland Ave., Loveland | 513.254.3459

But in the Murphys’ case, we didn’t have to do that.”
Lori’s closet is white and elegant, while Erik’s is dark and masculine with art deco touches. Mekenzie’s is pink with a vintage vogue look. “I’ve wanted a pink closet since I was a little kid, and now I have it!” Mekenzie says. “Bob helped with a lot of the finishing details that made a big difference. All around, it was a great experience,” Erik says. The design process for these unique closets took about 30 days with all the customization requests. Working with the building contractor, the total build from design to finish was 45 days. However, a typical design process is one to two days with installation usually within two to four weeks. “Once they got to installation, the team from Closets by Design was always good about coming and going on schedule, within the window they promised,” Lori says. “That’s something that can be so helpful when you’re getting work done in your home.” According to Bob, 100% customer satisfaction is his motto. “Once it’s set and done, I want the customer to be 100% happy … happy with the look, happy with the functionality, happy they did business with us,” Bob says. “There’s a lot of follow-up after the sale and after you do the design. I was at the Murphys’ multiple times because I had to see that it was looking right, and to handle any problems that might arise.” Bob also supports and encourages the idea of asking about the knowledge and skill of the person who is doing your closet design, especially if it’s complex or different than the norm. Bob himself has 40-plus years of design experience, more than 11 of which have been with Closets by Design.

Beyond the personalized service, Closets by Design also has the largest in-house production facility in Greater Cincinnati, including more designers and modern equipment than any company serving the area. In addition, Closets by Design has the largest showroom of on-display products, from designs that are basic to those that are highly elaborate. It’s a one-stop shop for any room in your home needing more functional storage solutions. “It’s a team effort over at Closets by Design,” Bob says. “Our installation crews are not subcontractors; they’re in-house people. We’re in charge of the whole job, which means nobody is passing the buck.” In addition to closets, Closets by Design specializes in custom garages, home offices, entertainment centers, laundry rooms and more. “Anything the customer needs, we can design, manufacture and install,” Bob says. Though Ian says they didn’t have anything in mind initially other than to achieve a more high-end look to the entry of their home, together they were able to come up with the final vision. They encouraged Ada and Jeff to look through Pinterest and Houzz for front porch styles they liked—their final decision was to go with a more rustic and inviting entry. Holmes started with the Werwas’ slim porch stairway that leads to the front door. Originally constructed with a tile facade and very thin columns that were not only rotting but had gone out of style, they updated it with a high-end look. “We came up with the idea to put in stone bases to the columns, plus different columns and wrought-iron-looking railings, and then we doubled the size of their stairs, plus we installed a new front door,” Ian says. “They liked what we did so much, they are going to have their back porch and fire pit done in the same style.” To help customers such as the Werwas enact their renovation vision, the Holmes team works with each and every client to walk them down an educational path toward the best decision. “We’re not a high-pressure sales company,” Ian explains. “We’ve already spent a lot of time making the decisions on what the best materials are so people aren’t overwhelmed with multiple choices. We make suggestions on materials, and we leave the selection up to them ... but with guidance, we [typically] go for what’s popular and on-trend.” WERWAS ON HOLMES Ada’s attitude for home remodeling is simple: “Whatever you do, love it first,” she says. “Know the style that you like and feel comfortable with because it’s going to be there for a long time. If you settle, you’ll always feel that way, but if you love it from the beginning, you’ll love it in the end.” It was that love—coupled with the satisfaction in a job well done for all the projects Holmes Custom Renovations has done throughout the years—that keeps them coming back. “The work he does ... he is meticulous,” Jeff says. “You have to realize that it takes time to get things done and get them done properly. Everything he does is top-notch, all the people they work with are great, and I would definitely recommend calling them.” The Werwas’ entire project was one that was evolving, Ian says, so it took about five to six weeks from start to finish. Typically Holmes has about a four-to-six-month project lead time—that accounts for not only scheduling the labor but also keeps in mind that many of the parts and pieces customers want can take four to six weeks to order. If you’re thinking of starting a project next spring, you’ll want to schedule with them in the fall. Whether you’re looking to tackle a little or a lot, updating the HolmesOhio.com
exterior of your home is worth the effort. No matter the project,

IN THE LIMELIGHT LOVELAND STAGE COMPANY CELEBRATES FOUR DECADES OF COMMUNITY THEATER
SINCE 1979, THE LOVELAND STAGE COMPANY HAS BROUGHT WORLD-CLASS LIVE THEATER AND PERFORMING ARTS TO LOVELAND RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE. And this season, the not-forprofit organization celebrates its 40th year as a valuable Loveland institution—one that’s mere steps away from our area’s most popular restaurants and shops. “Live theater in the middle of Loveland … the community has benefited from that,” says board member Dick Dyson. “We’ve had consistently good audiences—not only from Loveland. And it’s an opportunity to perform.” But the Stage Company offers more than just stage productions. In addition to live performances, the theater hosts weekly dance classes and summer youth workshops. It’s home to occasional community meetings and event benefits—and an annual scholarship. But, as happens with theater, there have been lows to accompany the highs. In 2008, a fire destroyed all but the theater’s four walls. The group had to consider their next move. “We decided we wanted to stay right here, right in the

heart of Loveland,” says Pat Furterer, president emeritus and original founder, on the decision to rally. “Within one year, we had the theater redone, paid for and we put on Miss Saigon. It was unbelievable.” Looking back on the Stage Company’s auspicious creation in the late 1970s, Pat recalls their first gathering at her own home. “I put an article in the Loveland Herald,” she says. “I had 11 people show up. That was 40 years ago, this year.” 42
Loveland Lifestyle | September 2019
Now, the full-fledged theater they call home has seating for nearly 200 and routinely enjoys a packed house. Audiences have been treated with talent who’ve gone on to become professional comedians, Broadway performers and more. “We’ve become as professional as amateurs can be,” Pat shares, beaming with more than a bit of Loveland pride. “I think we’re pretty darn good here.”
