ARTHRITIS AWA R E N E S S IS YOUR DAILY LIFE AT THE MERCY OF BACK, KNEE OR JOINT PAIN? One-third of American adults suffer the chronic pain and inflammation of arthritis and related joint problems, a toll that accounts for more than 39 million physician visits and billions of dollars in pain medication each year. And yet, many of those appointments and pills could be avoided by one simple, inexpensive step: weight loss. Obesity and arthritis have both reached epidemic levels in the United States—twin trends that are no coincidence, experts report. What’s the connection? Simple: The more you weigh, the more stress on those painful joints, especially the knees, hips, back and feet. There’s a good reason doctors tell you to “keep weight off” an injured joint! Experts agree that less weight means less pain and may even preventjoint damage. “Studies show small changes can be effective in reducing the impact of arthritis,” says Arthritis Foundation president and CEO John H. Klippel, M.D. The foundation’s top recommendation for arthritis sufferers? Lose weight. Shedding as little as 11 pounds can reduce joint pain and help prevent some forms of arthritis by 50 percent. Researchers have found that weight is a major cause of degenerative arthritis of weight-bearing joints. 14

One recent study at the University of Oxford reaffirmed the connection between overweight and osteoarthritis of the knee. The study also found that being overweight at an early age greatly increased one’s later risk of osteoarthritis of the knee. “We’re not the first people to find that, and I think it is now quite clearly, the single most preventable risk factor,” says study author Ray Fitzpatrick. So it’s never too soon to get in shape. Maintaining a healthy diet and keeping active will also help protect your overall health and strengthen your joints, providing even greater relief and protection. Of course, no one should ever ignore joint pain, doctor’s note. Studies show joint damage can occur early in some forms of arthritis, often within the first two years. The Village’s Director of Admissions and Marketing, Mindy Keller, explains: “We follow the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). Fortunately, this has only been a minor hiccup. The Village is able to offer virtual tours of all three campuses. “We’ve had to be very creative on how we can help people see our campuses and buildings without actually having them come inside,” Mindy says. “It’s been important for us to be able to offer these tours because we want everyone to know that even though there is a pandemic, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad time to move into one of our independent living, assisted living or memory care facilities.”

THEIR LIVES WOULD CHANGE OVER THE TIMESPAN OF JUST A FEW MONTHS WHEN, IN MIDMARCH, EVERYONE WAS TOLD TO SHELTER IN PLACE AND STAY AT HOME DUE TO THE OUTBREAK OF COVID-19. Community members really didn’t know what to expect and the leadership at WRMC, like medical teams and scientists around the globe, were learning as they went and responding with rapid-fire decision-making. You are probably thinking, this had to be terrible and very lonely – even frightening – for the WRMC community members. But some of them will tell you differently.

CONNECTION For instance, celebrating birthdays is a cherished tradition and The Ohio Masonic Home Foundation, didn’t let that tradition fade or become any less special for anyone. They were able to put tablets in the hands of hundreds of WRMC community members so that they could celebrate with their loved ones. One community member, DeLean Dotterer, even celebrated 105 years young with her family! Like DeLean, community members were able to talk with their loved ones and could even see the excitement on their faces when they blew out their birthday candles. It’s no secret that COVID-19 has changed all of our lives forever and technology is ensuring that every moment in life can be honored with meaning. The same tablets that unite families around celebrations also help bring peace and comfort in saying a final goodbye during unprecedented times. Not only were tablets provided to our community members, they were provided to families in other facilities to make sure that connection remains strong. From that connection was born the campaign “OMH Together, Powering the Connection,” an effort to ensure all community members have access to a tablet. HAVING FUN WHILE REMAINING PROTECTED Change can be difficult for everyone, especially for the senior population. Making sure there is not a feeling of isolation becomes a part of the everyday care provided by staff. The team at WRMC is never short on ideas. Some days, community members may be celebrating National Iced Tea Day, National Donut Day or even National Strawberry Day. And let’s not forget The Great WRMC T-shirt Toss – that put a smile on everyone’s face. In the midst of all the fun, employees at WRMC remain vigilant and focused on safety, preparation and response to COVID-19. Robert Lane, Corporate Director of Procurement at The Ohio Masonic Home – the parent company of WRMC – is helping with that. Robert shared, “At The Ohio Masonic Home we are very grateful for fantastic relationships with our core suppliers. Also, because of our reputation in the industry, we were able to create many new relationships that gave us access to additional protective products. Along with great suppliers we have an internal supply chain team that is 100% focused on making sure our front-line staff have all the tools they need.” Thanks to Robert’s hard work and that of his team, no employee has to worry about whether they have the appropriate protective tools they need.

HONORING ALL LIFE’S MOMENTS (CONTINUED) SAFETY What makes WRMC community members feel safe? Is it the care that they receive, the meals that they enjoy every day or the cleanliness of their rooms? Scott Buchanan, CEO for The Ohio Masonic Home commented, “I am so proud of our team. Every member, across all three campuses has stepped up to make sure that community members’ needs are always met.” Scott continues: “To help guide resident care during these unusual times, The Ohio Masonic Home invited members to complete a national industry survey. We were honored to be rated above the national average in all 15 areas that were scored. We want to express our thanks to those community members who participated in the survey.” In the ongoing fight to protect its community members and staff, The Ohio Masonic Home is taking proactive measures and testing every employee for COVID-19 at its three campuses. Specifically at WRMC, they are waiting to hear when the Ohio National Guard will be paying a visit to the campus. They will be testing all employees for COVID-19. Jason French, Administrator says, “Our team members are the reason we were able to act as swiftly and concisely to prevent the spread of the virus on our campus. We as an organization were prepared. We had all of the equipment/PPE in place prior to having positive cases. This allowed our dedicated and heroic team members to provide care for our community members when they needed us the most, in the safest manner possible.” WRMC is prepared should a new case be identified and will follow its pandemic plan, including contact tracing, isolation and rigorous disinfecting to ensure the continued safety of community members and staff.

COME OUT TO BUNKER HILL GOLF COURSE AND EVENT CENTER’S ANNUAL CLAMBAKES, TAKING PLACE SEPT. 11 and 18 as well as Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23 (with a dinner reservation). Their signature clambake dish is $19.95, and includes clams, chicken, potatoes, corn on the cob, clam chowder and bread stick. You can even customize your clambake by substituting clams for steak, shrimp or mussels; or keep the clams and add one of these items for an extra $9.95. Bunker Bowls for Two are also available, and include clams, mussels, shrimp, sausage, potatoes, corn on the cob, two bowls of chowder and breadsticks for $29.95; this dish in particular has been a big hit for Bunker Hill guests in past years. Bunker Hill also offers the option to book large private clambake parties on their deck for 20-36 people, their patio for 40-64 people, their event center for 60-80 people and their pavilion (with bonfires) for 80-120 people. Private clambakes for a large group are perfect for class reunions, family reunions, church gatherings, neighborhood get-togethers, employee/client appreciation dinners and especially fundraisers. For these large party reservations, the clambake is $27.95 per person and include soft drinks, tax and tip. Each guest can choose from clams, steak or shrimp to be served with their chicken, potatoes, corn, and chowder so even the non-clam lovers can still enjoy their full meal! Bunker Hill has even built a website for each party’s guests to register and prepay, making the coordinator of the party an admin to the website so they can view the guest list in real time.
