Biz Williamson and Cathy Mestdagh also stepped up and are now homeschooling Payton. She also receives some tutoring help from Carrie Johnson. There are too many people to list in this article, but their biggest support has come from St. Paul School and Athletic Club, the Saint Clair Shores Hockey Association, and Growing Smiles.
“So when I asked Payton what she wanted all of you to know about her, she simply said that “She feels BRAVE!” This beautiful family has an authentically inspiring attitude filled with gratitude. The main reason that Heather and Howard wanted to share their story is to showcase all of the wonderful people in our community. Howard said, “Sometimes we need to be reminded of how much we can accomplish together!” Heather shared that the best thing Payton said to her is, “I’m just over this cancer thing, I just want it done!” When Payton was asked what she wanted all of you to know about her, she simply said, “She feels BRAVE!” It was an honor getting to spend time with and getting to know this brave and inspiring young warrior—Payton Power!

recharge. The body must go through a process to find rest, and part of that is out of your control. “There are certain hormones that are released that help us fall asleep,” Tzelepis says. Melatonin induces sleep. We produce it naturally, and you can buy an overthe-counter supplement, but melatonin is not a sedative, and it’s not a magic aid. You can’t pop a pill, plop into bed with your tablet to keep you company, and wait to gingerly nod off moments later. The light from electronic devices sends signals to the brain that cancel the effects of melatonin, says Tzelepis, who works at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and has a private practice in the City of Grosse Pointe. CULINARY CREATIONS ARTICLE SUSAN STAPLETON PHOTOGRAPHY JULI SUAREZ
Skinny With a Twist CHEERS TO A HEALTHY NEW YEAR! BY JHOUSE THIS SMOOTHIE IS A SUPERCHARGED FAT BUSTER. Pineapple reduces bloat and aids in digestion, while blueberries help rev up the fat-burning genes in your body. Combined with nutrient-dense kale, spinach, and lemon peel, this is one healthy drink. Bonus: not only is Juice delicious, but is also an excellent way to get more produce in your diet. Most Americans do not eat the recommended number of servings of vegetables each day. A single JHouse juice can provide two or three servings of greens and all the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients of whole fruits and vegetables.
SKINNY WITH A TWIST INGREDIENTS
+ ½ cup frozen organic pineapple + 1 cup frozen organic blueberries + Handful of organic kale + Handful of organic spinach + 2 lemon peels + 8 ounces of organic pineapple juice INSTRUCTIONS
Combine all ingredients and blend until silky smooth. Serve immediately.
